My Giants - Eagles Breakdown (it is long, but has diagrams)

AnishPatel : 12/13/2007 3:52 pm
Here is my Giants- Eagles Breakdown. It took me a while creating this. Hope you guys enjoy this. It took me from after the game sunday to last night to complete this.

Link to the PDF version for easier reading or printing it out. 5.19 MB

http://savefile.com/projects/808578341

1. Formation Page - The formation page lists the different formations by our offense during the game. The number in the box given is also listed in the film breakdown sheet. So if you see for offensive formation 2, refer to the formation page for that formation.

2. Film Breakdown Sheets - Show a log of information of Down-distance, hash, offensive formation, and other key info.

3. Runs Vs the Eagles - I took some run plays I liked or saw from the game and diagramed them out

- I wrote descriptions for each of the run plays as well. Few of them were just descriptions and there are no diagrams for them

4. Pass plays Vs the Eagles - I took some of the pass plays and basically used it to study the blitzes our offense had to deal with.

5. Play by Play Sheets - This includes every play penalty or not, and has them diagramed out. 8 pages of that, for 64 plays, INCLUDING penalties.

6. Front Composite - This sheet gives us what techniques, were being played throughout the game. I divided this into hashes, zones, and down and distances to help us examine trends. Also listed what they were in, nickel, even front, odd front and so on. I also included stunts and who was stunting

7. Blitz Composite - This helps us understand where the blitzes were coming, and where they were being called on the field. Left Hash, Middle Hash, and so on. Also, I indicated who was coming on the particular play.

can see we attacked their right side alot, running 38 lead center and 38 lead power. I am guessing we thought we can attack their LE and LDT. So we pulled our BSG, which would be #69, and lead up with Madison H. That's our bread and butter play in my humble opinion.

Imagine playing on Friday night. Trying to scout an opponent live on Saturday, then spending Saturday night and Sunday breaking down as many as three films in the manner that Anish did this one, then analyzing the data and putting it all together into a game play by Monday.

Such is the life of a coach during the season.

on page 2 of the pass plays vs eagles you have Moss running a 10 yard dig, Toomer a 7 yard cross and Buress a 15 yard option route. When in fact it's Buress with the 10 yard dig, toomer with the I'm just messing with you route.

I loved the Giants, and loved the game, so basically keep an open mind, and learn as much as you can from people. Also, helps being the youngest on my staff, so just learned alot from my other position coaches. Pretty soon you see the game as Xs and Os and not as a fan or media type. That's the biggest step, in my opinion, in learning this great game.

I am sure teams know this, but the issue becomes what formation do we run the play out of, and how we draw it up against their defense. For instance we double teamed the 3 technique this time, but who knows against the bills, we can do something else. So they can try their best to scout us, but that's the fun part of the chess game. We give them different formations and then run the same stuff out of it.
Anish, would you mind telling BBI.....
Crispino : 12/13/2007 4:52 pm : link

Most DIII, DII and high school coaches work for less than minimum wage.

You guys are real impressed with this but it's just a single game break down. Anish probably does two to three of these a week. If he doesn't there is someone on staff who does.

I usually do three games a week during the season, but there are times I break down 4.
After a few years you can do them much quicker than when you start out, but it's still very time consuming.

Once you've broken the game down, the work has just begun.
Compiling and analyzing the data from two or three games is next.

Then you have to decide what your path will be for the week, then devise the specific game plan for each side of the ball.
Considering you have until Monday's practice to do all of this, weekend evenings are at a premium.
There is very little time to celebrate a win or mourn a loss.
dorgan
AnishPatel : 12/13/2007 5:27 pm : link
Yeah this is just front and blitz, normally coverage composite is added to it, but we don't have access to the film coaches use so I had to leave that out. Either way it's fun to do to break down NFL games because you see the different Xs and Os that take place.
Thanks very much Amish, great work

Yeah breaking down the games is a painstaking process, and towards the end of the game, I am praying for a 3 and out so I can be done with that series! lol. This game went quickly though, so I didn't mind it as much. The Lions and Vikings games seemed to drag on and on.

Dorgan:
don't forget calling in the game stats on Friday night to the papers after the game...before midnight, of course,

then doing all what you said and having the game film from the last game ready to watch with the players on Monday all broken down play by play .. they never sleep

then sitting in all the new stuff for next week

the actual game goes by in a blur

Coaches, good coaches, are worth their weight in good

Very impressive .....

thsnk you. If you are still here could you discuss the shotgun spread formatio? - people seem to be warming to the run from the spread (first question) idea -

and what would you think of toomer (boss in the slot) (shocky right slot) buress...the thinking being that eli has connected with these guys well, they can block well for the formentioned run from spread and the average heights prsent a match up situation on certain routes especially. Another question is which run plays might be more to the advantage of a bradshaw with his additional shiftyness. saw bj head for the pile a few times there.

I would imagine this next one is the game to pull out all the stops play calling wise.
Is this it?

So double slot, and have Toomer, Shockey, Boss and Plax right? Jacobs in the backfield next to Eli? Does that sound right?

yes and eli will adjust at the line run or pass...one of those four is almost guaranteed to deliver on a short route of some kind...recommend this time of year that the wrs best moves be made available as early and often as possib;e...I dunno how bjacobs is doing health wise but if he gets outside either boss or shocky can run the pick for him on the lbs. conversly any of the four can go long ..play action from this set?

..."Big" Run & Shoot?
So basically you're talking
AnishPatel : 12/13/2007 10:29 pm : link
about a run and shoot type scenerio. 4 wrs and 1 back, and go from there. It's tough to sell that offense now a days. An offense like that can get you're qb killed at this level. It may work now and then, but at this level, you take out the franchise qb, and your left with a backup. Then what? On some plays it won't be bad, but blitz a LB or safety and you're going to get your qb killed. I love that offense for college, but in the pros, it's a tough sell because you're investing so much in a qb at this level. To leave him open for big hits is not smart.

Not to mention Gilbride runs a strong pro style offense, based on I formations, and a lot of variations of it. I am convinced if he had his way, we'd stick with I pro right, left, Big I, strong and weak I, and not leave it.
to help sell the playaction
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 10:29 pm : link
boss blocks his dback, the lbs slide to go after jacobs, the safety bites, toomer is alone on a cb

....or boss runs a short crossing route )fast) to cause a pile up in the flat (the pick) and jacobs takes the ball sharply the other direction.

question; how often are the more complex bocking schemes used during shotgun sets...if not why not....?
its like run and shoot but
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 10:35 pm : link
there are still two TEs on the field and the RB (if he still can at this point in the season) can A) ge outside and B) block like hell...its mainly used for short yardage running gains counterinuitavely ...with bj being a threat to do more and for C) quick passing patterns to the big TEs...if the D steps back on its heels due to the above..then we have a nice long play scenario...some poster mentioned that the spreads actaully had longer average running stats this year the the nfl.
we discussed this in the preseason and
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 10:44 pm : link
my two cents was that the power formations force a power D aka a stacked line...which is great if one gets around it and terrible if one rams into it

the spread forces the D to disperse and some were hoping this would get jacobs isolated on single lbs or better yet cbs...now BJ might be slowing a bit for now late in the season with the hammy but

..but the classic run blocking schemes as slated seemed a better fit for Ward - a quick guy to the hole type runner...bradshaw might be able to do BOTH styles but can he pick up the blitz is the question.
Run and shoot
AnishPatel : 12/13/2007 10:48 pm : link
offenses tend to thrive on smaller shiftier backs, that don't need a lead blocker, and yet strong enough to handle a blitz. In the pros that's pretty damn specifc, and we don't have the back for that. So that alone put's us at a disadvantage.
so the idea was that
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 10:50 pm : link
the spread as a running formation (mostly) would been seen a few more times per game with Jacobs than it was with Ward....my favorite sample however was a touchdown by QB Collins where we ran the spread near the goal line....at the last second Tiki split to the slot leaving an empty backfield and forcing a lb out...and Collins ran three yards up the middle for the TD.

Game before last Eli ran about 9 yards for a 1st down from the spread I think.

...Duncan, Jeffries, Hill & Givins.

oh yea, and Warren Moon.

btw, no TE on that team if I remember correctly.
It's good for
AnishPatel : 12/13/2007 10:56 pm : link
couple good times but teams will watch tape and catch on, especially at the pro level. They will rep the hell out if it. Plus if we did that against philly they would have 6 down linemen and 5 covering our 4 guys, with 6 guys rushing. It would be a mess to see.
we were hoping that with
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 10:58 pm : link
Jacobs having a few extra steps from the shotgun to gain speed and going more or less in a straight line...being very fast for his size..he could bust these right out...I think last year he had some big gains this way...

he has been a stellar blocker early in the season picking up blitzes and just hammering them....

eli seems to love having lots or recievers and really made some decisive short throws in preseason I think from formations like this...I am fairly sure we saw some really nice first downs near the red zone in preseason this way as well.
That's the thing though
AnishPatel : 12/13/2007 11:01 pm : link
you want a small back, not a big back.. You have two DTs on O'hara and 6 down linemen total. By the time Jacobs thinks of getting speed, he would be hammered. If we run playaction, Eli would need to be scrapped off the turf.
Thanks Anish!

come to think of it those were
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 11:06 pm : link
fairly short gains...like 10 yards or so on those preseason passes..

yes it is a VERY scary high risk formation...

but it would seem to force alot of decisions onto a D that the power formations just don't.

...it is utterly less predictable...

and for that play would be putting the things really in the hands of Eli and (probably toomer or burress)the more one gets away with it the greater the chance it opens things up

It's a recipe for disaster if it's used on a regular basis.

Brown Hornet : 12/13/2007 11:08 pm : link
...that didn't come out right.
if I am counting right would that then mean:
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 11:20 pm : link
6 guys on the line, four 'man on' (covering our two tes and two wrs wide)

would that leave zero lbs back and only one safety?

I would then in that case split the TEs all the way out wide taking those two defenders out of the running and blitzing scenarios

so if they put 6 on the line plus the 4 'man on' near the line that is almost a totally empty backfield for burress to juke or an isolation scenario for shocky to bull through as examples...when have we seen shocky not be pulled down by five guys this year?

scary for them as well
it is sort of nuclear both ways
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 11:30 pm : link
because we could get our rb and or qb creamed...

but they certainly dont want 3 out of the 4 of

shocky, boss, burress and toomer

being in a one on one with no linebackers around and no safety...they are all out wide so pick your poison

I.m thinking the safety has to go for burress if he goes long..

so I could easily see one of them, maybe Boss taking a short pass such as a quick semi-underneath crossing route to the house on this one with the other guys blocking if need be

in a mix up from last weeks td
holy shit
ITaLiRiCaN : 12/13/2007 11:34 pm : link
...
so it would be burress and boss left
freebluelove : 12/13/2007 11:34 pm : link
and shock toomer right...the same pass as the one to burress last week but this time to boss...a very fast and short route...plex is going long and toomer shock the out or short hook or whatever obscures the boss route and takes the dbacks away from the play..if one of those lbs gets smart and drops back eli will have to put touch on it but more likely boss has the moves and just torches him

Awesome stuff.

Just curious (for Anish, dorgan and other coaches), does this stuff go into a database at all? It seems to me that it could be useful to put into a database to find patterns with visualization software. I know it won't replace regular analysis, but it may come up with a pattern that isn't easily visible.
What, no color coding?

Great stuff Anish:)

Yeah it does. This is all long hand stuff, but then you put the information in the system. ODK, it's called it and from there you generate reports.

I hadn't been on line for a while and just saw this - unbelievable - I won't be able to look at it closely until later - but I appreciate all your effort here and I know I'm going to enjoy going through this!!!
Kudos

...I'm guessing that Anish will have his hands full doing this for his team during the season.
Yeah BH,
AnishPatel : 12/14/2007 3:57 pm : link
but it's easier if because I have access to a wide shot and tight shot of the game. So it should go alot faster than using Fox's coverage which sucks in my opinion.
So Anish

Watching the game as a coach, wahst your take on Eli?
I think he is a good qb,
AnishPatel : 12/14/2007 4:19 pm : link
don't know if I like our system when it comes to passing. One great philosophy that Coach Davis, the OC for Texas, said is if your offense has more than 5 or so breakdowns, you ask yourself as a coaching staff. Are we asking them to do too much mentally? Or are we asking them to do too much physically? I would say mentally, because not only is Eli and his skill guys on the wrong page, but we seem to drop a lot of balls, which indicates lack of focus because something else could be on their mind.

That thing needs to be fixed. It's hard to know exactly without sitting in on their meetings and watching their practices. But Eli will be fine, it's the system I worry about more. If Eli fails it would be because this franchise didn't surround himself with the proper coaches on the offensive side of the ball. Ben had Whisenhunt, Rivers and Brees had Cam C. Who did we have? Huffy, who is now in Cananda. And our qb coach was Gilbride who last held that position when he was with the Oilers in '89. In my opinion we failed to surround him with good coaches.

Gilbride is a step above Huffy, but overall I am not really a fan of him. I love his running plays, but still I think when you invest in a pick and a qb like Eli, you better be damn prepared by giving him everything so he can have a chance to succeed. Surpisingly even through all this, we still make the playoffs, which shows me he has a lot of potential.

what is up with Sean Peyton?

...what did he do to get our guys open when here an what has he been doing now?

Have not followed really but remember some nice open long routes when he was here. Think I remember someone saying they let Collins go for first read only towards the end of that year (vikings game?)...eli seems much smarter than collins..that must play into things
