A new group of shows in the series -- America’s Game: The Missing Rings –- also debuts on NFL Network in September. Missing Rings chronicles some of the greatest teams which did not win the Super Bowl.
was from that article posted a while back about the old traveling nfl championship trophy that got lost after they came out with the Lombardi award. Ar first i thought thats what they meant by Missing Rings. Its amazing that something like that can get lost
I watched the '86 America's Game before the Tampa playoff game just for good karma. Once they won that game, I watched it before the next three playoff games out of superstition. Hopefully this show matches that one. Coughlin, Strahan and Eli would be great - certainly is a lot of great material there.
My only regret is that they won't have the benefit of time. Time to reflect and appreciate. The 1986 "America's Game" was so good because you could see how much it meant to Simms, Taylor, and Parcells given all the time that has passed.
I have seen a lot of NFL Films material whey the Sabols will interview particular players 10 or more years later and eventually cut that in with the original footage. But who knows where the Sabols will be in 10 years - that's a really sad thought. Man what a great family and brilliant body of work.
On who it's going to be. I'd be stunned if it's not Eli, Strahan, and Coughlin. But going on the premise that it's supposed to be someone who meant a lot to that season somehow sneaking Jerry Reese in there wouldn't be a bad idea. But it won't happen.
Can't wait!!!! If ever there was a team that should have one of these it is these Giants. I was nervous with all the NFL budget cuts that they wouldn't do it, SO SO SO HAPPY! It is so well done!
I had read earlier this offseason, when the stuff about the NFL phasing out NFL films started to make news, that the NFL had rebuffed NFL films when they approached them about a new americas game project. Glad to see it will happen
For the 2007 Giants, the subjects will be Coughlin, Manning and Strahan. Sabol said they'd already had all three of them in the studio and conducted three hour interviews with each, and he said Coughlin was great. Sabol also added that the Giants video crew records all of Coughlin's night befor ethe game speeches, and said the Giants made that footage available to NFL Films and will be included.
Sabol also spoke a little about the Missing Ring series. It will be focused on franchises that have never won a Super Bowl (so no 2007 Pats). He said the first ones will likely be the 90's Bills, '87 Bengals and '69 Vikings. I think that is a good idea for a series and will probably be more interesting than a lot of the one's they did on the winners.
I can't wait to hear those "before the game" speeches. Should be very entertaining. Coughlin doesn't look like a "fun" guy - frankly, he always looked to me like he should be commanding a Panzer division in the Ardennes, circa 1944 - but looks can be deceiving, as evidenced by his comments to the officials prior to the SuperBowl, "This year everybody's worried about my face, last year it was my ass."
Thats funny... I love the series and usually watch anytime its on the NFL network, but I haven't seen any of the Giants yet!!!! Thursday night I have the DVR primed!
Great news about the 2007 Giants America's Game. Â
As for the Missing Rings series, I think it will be better to focus on the teams that didn't win a Superbowl. The 2007 Patriots would be a crappy show, mostly because most of their core players can reflect on their past SB championships. Same with the 2001 Rams and the 1997 Packers.
In my opinion the best lot of the Missing Rings would be focused on.....
Jim Kelly's Buffalo Bills teams to lost 4 straight SBs, that should definitly be one of the teams selected.
Dan Marino's 80's Dolphins teams, especially following Dan's unsuccessful quest for a SB.
Dan Fout's late 70's/early 80's Chargers teams that some call the best teams not to make a Superbowl.
Frank Tarkenton's 70's Vikings team with that great defense of the "Purple People Eaters" losing 4 Superbowls.
It would be nice to hear him speak from the heart a bit and not give us the usual, "trying to play good football, get the ball to my playmakers" routine. Between this and the 5-cd box set of playoff games that's coming out in June, I don't even want next season to get here. I'll just watch these dvds on Sundays next fall.
The Giants superbowl victories may all be featured in the rings series. Broncos and Bills were three-peat losers. Pats may have been the best team in league history.
In each case, I'll look forward to celebrating their misery.
but you could add Pierce in there as a possibility. You have to keep in mind two things:
1) Strahan is on vacation and pondering retirement...I doubt he's been in the studio or will be any time soon. And given that once camp starts and what not, they either have, or will be shooting tape soon.
2) Pierce is great for sound bytes and he would represent the defensive side very well.
Long shots: Plax, Osi, Jacobs.
I posted this before I read truebluelarry's post Â
pillar of American sports. That the NFL Network doesn't utilize more of their material offends me as a fan. Less Jamie Dukes and Rich Eisen, more John Facenda and Steve Sabol.
My buddy works in Mt. Laurel for NFL Films...he helped put together a lot of the stuff on the Super Bowl DVD. There are entire buildings just full of the stuff the Sabols have accrued. With that much material there is no reason the NFL Network should be reairing the same studio show 4 times a day.
One is left with the disturbing sense that the NFL Network is pushing away from the excellence of NFL Films, and more towards the ESPN-style shittization of broadcasting.
Booyah.
I don't think I've ever agreed with Go Terps before Â
But he's absolutely right on this one. The NFLN would be much better if they featured more of the classic NFL Films programs. Who the hell watches "Put Up Your Dukes"??
90 Bills should be on there. They were heavily favored to win the Superbowl and absolutely tore through the playoffs to get there. But you know what Bills stands for ...B.oy I. L.ove L.osing S.uperbowls.
CAN'T WAIT!!
One sleeper I'd love to see on the program would be Corey Webster. If ever a guy has an interesting story to tell it'd be him.
My only regret is that they won't have the benefit of time. Time to reflect and appreciate. The 1986 "America's Game" was so good because you could see how much it meant to Simms, Taylor, and Parcells given all the time that has passed.
Those are so well done and i can't wait to see it
Why wait until September to show a film most fans want to see? Show that biotch now during the off season.
Pats
Vikings
Packers
Rams
Bills
thats just recent memory.

Sorry I had a Jim Rome flashback...........

Even watching other teams episodes are great, the format of the show is tremendous.
Thanks for the info truebluelarry, that sounds like a show that will attain "save until manually deleted" on my DVR.
As I've insisted all along, it has to be Coughlin, Strahan, and Manning.
Parcells, Simms and LT. This is a great series, very well done.
I've only seen the two about the Giants; couldn't care less about the other teams.
Can't wait for the latest one.

Ok so the Today Show girls do a cameo, like they did in Tampa.

I just watched the big Jets Monday night comeback against the Dolphins the other night. The whole game. It was great.
I would agree, though, that more NFL Films productions and fewer programming replays are in order on the channel.
