What State should have an NFL team that doesn't have one?

BigBlueDownTheShore : 7/10/2008 10:01 am
So after reading the post about the Jags maybe moving to LA it got me thinking about what states don't have an NFL team. I always felt like Alabama is a great football state. They have great college football programs, but that doesn't mean that a team located in their state would fail. I also understand that the market there probably isn't as big as in LA, but I really feel if they had a team to root for it would be successful, and as stated before the California market is already saturated with fans with deep roots to the Raiders, San Diego, and the Niners. What state do you think deserves an NFL team?

I agree with Virgina

there are a lot of people in that Va Beach area.

Vegas would be cool.

DC isn't Virginia, it might as well be Maryland

Tidewater is the largest area per capita, without a professional sports Franchise

a team in those southern states is that they care FAR more about college football...

in Vagas, I'm sure there would be hell to pay. Pacman, and Tank Johnson would definitely get in trouble there.

has a lot of transplants too. in all seriousness, a state in the deep south such as alabama might be the best bet. portland oregon isnt a bad idea in theory but seahawk fans have made inroads down through oregon and even the inland northwest as far east as idaho. they own that whole region.
How about Utah?

Could be apples and oranges, but they have always been enthusiastic in their support of the Jazz...

Relocate one team to LA (Jax, Chargers, or Rams)

32 teams is perfect.

Michigan sure as hell could use a pro team.

I like the Utah idea: how about "The Salt Lake City Strippers?"

I think it's reasonably obvious that I'm just throwing out that they clearly have interests in other North American countries and that's the only logical city. Sorry, should I have said Ontario?
They should move the Cowboys

The Lions

the league should contract. Never happen of course, but it'd help the quality of play.

As things are now, I agree with those who say the Jags should just move to LA and have that be the end of the moves.
Oklahoma

South Carolina and Michigan... Yes, Michigan... Don't even try to say the Lions are an actual NFL team!

Doubt Oklahoma would work
AcesUp : 7/10/2008 12:03 pm : link
The Cowboys are too rooted there for them to build a viable fanbase. If anything, Austin would probably be the better option since they are the fastest growing city in the country. The Deep South wouldn't work because they don't have much money and the money they do have goes to the SEC.

Toronto and Vegas would probably be the most profitable options, with obvious hurdles associated with both locations (Canada and Gambling).
South?
Gene Too : 7/10/2008 12:05 pm : link
Really?
Jax, Tenn, Atlanta cant pay people to attend NFL games.

Like CiP said earlier....College football is way more popular in the south.

Las Vegas might be able to support a team. A lot of transplants though, just like Los Angeles.

Buffalo really needs a football team
What about El Paso, Texas?
turtlepower : 7/10/2008 1:25 pm : link
The population in El Paso is about 600,000, which is more than Seattle or Boston. Las Cruces, NM has 86,000 plus and that isn't too far away, and Carlsbad, NM adds another 25,000 plus. The county that Las Cruces is in I think has another 100,000 people in it. Odessa, TX, is a little further way but has another 95,000. I think it is far enough away in the huge state of Texas from Dallas that the Cowboy fan effect is minimal. Brings football closer to Mexico...
CONNECTICUT: HARTFORD WHALER"S
beatrixkiddo : 7/10/2008 1:26 pm : link
bring them back as a football team. CT really needs a pro. sports team because it's the only thing that will unify everyone in this state. People are split 50/50 between N.Y and Boston Fans, with football its either GIANTS, JETS or PATS. baseball its YANKEES, REDSOX. basketball its KNICKS, CELTICS. Hockey Bruins, Rangers. When we had the HARTFORD WHALERS we were the happiest people in the world. I do love the mix of support for diff. teams for arguement's sake, but to have a state team like we did back in the 90's would just kick ass.
My pick

or Nebraska. They've both had pro teams for so long, it's about time they get a legal one.
You've got to look at the cities.
mudbear : 7/11/2008 1:59 am : link
Most of the States mentioned, while terrific football States, just don't have a big enough city to support an NFL franchise.

My guess offhand as to which city is the biggest that doesn't have a franchise, I'd have to say "Toronto." Ontario deserves a team. So what if it's a Province?

Other States that would qualify, off the top of my head -- other States that don't have a team, but have a Metropolitan area or series of Metropolitans areas big enough -- would be Virginia, Oregon, Iowa, Alabama, and Connecticut.

But the ultimate state on this list is our very own New Jersey. Until I see an "NJ" on the Giants' or Jets' helmets, I'm not seeing a New Jersey team. Of course, as big as New Jersey is, and as deserving of a franchise; just the fact that it's crammed between the Giants, Jets, Eagles, Ravens, Bills, Redskins, and Patriots would make it tough to give itself the space an NFL franchise would need. You know what though? New Jersey is tough. It could handle a franchise piece of cake. Maybe the Jets should move back to NY, the Giants should stay where they are, and they DO put that "NJ" on the helmet. I wouldn't mind. Or if the Giants and Jets both go back to NY, then maybe the New Jersey Jaguars just might have a ring to it!
Scratch Oregon.
mudbear : 7/11/2008 2:00 am : link
Too small. Vegas could pull off an NFL team. But it would ruin the NFL.
What about New Mexico?
mudbear : 7/11/2008 2:07 am : link
It's small, but growing. And the word "Albuquerque" just absolutely has to have more of a role in the American lexicon. Having an NFL team would do it. The Albuquerque Dragons.
Agree with Phil

Look at the plates in Giants stadium
sflasteve : 7/20/2008 5:21 pm : link
70% are from NJ even when they played at Yankee stadium 53% of season ticket holders were not from NY. Thats why Wellington Mara wanted to go to NJ and people could park and tailgate without having to take their lives in their hands in the freakin Bronz
