Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.
The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source.
The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.
The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks. His best years may be behind him. I'm not saying he's done, but his days as an elite 2 way TE are getting fewer. And the Giants have done pretty darn well without him.
Now let's go play some friggin' football!
What I do know, is that college players that were at the Playboy Mansion for the annual All-American photo shoot a few months ago were all kidding that they actually all are "Seniors", since every one of them (Seniors, Juniors, and 3rd year Sophomores) plan on applying for the 2009 draft.
The dollars that rookies will be paid in 2010 was the major topic of discussion amongst the Pre-season All-American players at the Playboy Mansion. These young players are looking for a big payday, and the consensus amongst them was that the 2009 draft will be the last gravy train.
I think we did very well if both picks for Shockey are in the 2009 draft.
I'm guessing completely, but if shockey needed to pass the physical for the trade to go through, then that seems the most likely reason why they had to wait. He couldn't pass it then, but can pass it now.
On another note, somebody needs to tell giants.com that they have to write another position battle article for starting tight end.
Shockey was done here. Good luck to him. I suspect he really won't be missed
Whatever happens Reese did not handle this correctly. Reese takes no crap and I guess he took a calculated risk back in April. It didn't work out.
Shockey will do great things for the Saints. We will be lucky to find another Shockey but Boss has upside and we have depth at WR. Still, I will miss Shockey. HE was fun to watch.
Imagine if Shockey was a 6 year old car. Wouldn't you be happy to get 50% back on your initial investment, especially for a car that broke down every year and dropped a hubcap at key moments (not to mention honking at police of it's own volition...)
Some of you are acting like GM's were crawling over each other, to get him.
Who cares if he plays for an NFC team!

Now he had a disgruntled player, a malcontent coming into camp, stirring up shit when coming off a Super Bowl is difficult enough. Looking at his agent, renegotiations would have been brutal.
He accomplished:
1.) Got rid of a malcontent
2.) Picked up 2 picks next year
3.) Caught the attention of every player on the Giants (if he'll get rid of Shockey, he'll get rid of me)
4.) Probably made the team healthier for the year
In Boss I trust.
If the trade had to happen, I'm glad we got the picks in the 2009 draft instead of the 2008. Along with the comp picks we get for losing Wilson, Mitchell and Torbor. Reese will have a field day and have the flexibility to move up or down at will next draft.
If so, we gave him away.
We'll miss his presence on the field. It's one thing to sneak through the playoffs without him, it's another to play the upcoming season and make another round of playoffs without his blocking and pass catching skills.
It's nitpicking but looking back, Reese should have taken the picks back in April. That said, I can't blame Reese for taking a chance that things could have been worked out between Shockey and NY but in the end things fell apart.
Sometimes this stuff writes itself....
Reese I am sure will take advantage of an extra 2 and 5. This guy is like King Midas. Hopefully this draft class turns out like last year and the Saints go 0-16.
I hope Coughlin bitchslaps that punkass bitch on his way out!!!!!!

I will miss him, though
Shockey didn't want to be here and we got rid of him for two picks.

Plaxico Burress unhappy with timing of Jeremy Shockey trade - ( New Window )
Evidently not. We've been trying to get this thing done and it doesn't seem like it's really important to them. But it's not the first time this has happened to a player, even a guy like myself who wants to be around and wants to retire a Giant. It never should have gotten to this point. I'm not saying I don't want to be around. I don't want to leave. That's the most encouraging thing is I don't want to leave. But there's apparently more to it.
Remember his moaning over supposed leaks from his camp saying he was unhappy (along with his refusal to actually deny them on top of it)?
