Foxsports-Giants/Saints reach a deal for Shockey?

yankees78 : 7/21/2008 2:13 pm
Please don't kill me..if discussed already..I'll delete.

Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.

The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

I should've said last 4 years. The Giants are 7-2 in games without him the last 4 years. You're right that he's missed 4 reg. season games the last 3 years. He's missed a total of 5 reg. season games the last 4 years and those games were all at the ends of seasons. Add the 4 playoff games last year and you could say that he's missed many of the most important games the Giants have played the last few years.

His best years may be behind him. I'm not saying he's done, but his days as an elite 2 way TE are getting fewer. And the Giants have done pretty darn well without him.
Adios, amigo.

Shockey made some memorable plays for the Giants, plays that fired me up big time. But he talked and pouted his way out the door, and that's no one's fault but his. It's dumb to blame Reese for not trading him sooner so as to get more value or picks in this year's draft. Reese was hoping and believing what I and everyone else who loves the Giants was hoping and believing back in April: that this guy was eventually going to come to his senses and buy into the team concept again, in the interest of being a big-time piece on a winning team full of his friends. Shockey let us down, not Reese. Shockey used the power he had to hurt the team. If Reese had acted in April to prevent that from happening, he would have gotten killed for giving up on Shockey, and I'd have been the first one to kill him for it. So I'm certainly not going to bitch about it now. I'm confident that Reese and company will turn that 2 and a 5 into enough value to make us say "Jeremy who?" in a couple years.
Now let's go play some friggin' football!

Everything is speculative and no one can be certain about the quality of any draft.

What I do know, is that college players that were at the Playboy Mansion for the annual All-American photo shoot a few months ago were all kidding that they actually all are "Seniors", since every one of them (Seniors, Juniors, and 3rd year Sophomores) plan on applying for the 2009 draft.

The dollars that rookies will be paid in 2010 was the major topic of discussion amongst the Pre-season All-American players at the Playboy Mansion. These young players are looking for a big payday, and the consensus amongst them was that the 2009 draft will be the last gravy train.

I think we did very well if both picks for Shockey are in the 2009 draft.

On draft day I wanted
BigBlueBuff : 7/21/2008 4:41 pm : link
Shockey gone, over the summer I wanted Shockey to stay. Today I have mixed emotions, but one thing is for sure in my mind (because I'm a fan and I support the shirt not the player) and that is if Shockey doesn't want to be a New York Giant and all that it means then F-off to New Orleans and enjoy being an 'Aint!!
Torrag and anybody else claiming this should have been done
TheArmyOfCoughlin : 7/21/2008 4:41 pm : link
before the draft...

I'm guessing completely, but if shockey needed to pass the physical for the trade to go through, then that seems the most likely reason why they had to wait. He couldn't pass it then, but can pass it now.

On another note, somebody needs to tell giants.com that they have to write another position battle article for starting tight end.

He didnt want to be here
Blue Blood : 7/21/2008 4:43 pm : link
and now he is gone... Its that simple. He would have been a total distraction all camp.
bad trade
Simms : 7/21/2008 4:44 pm : link
I just am not in favor of trading a talent within the NFC for only draft picks. Mind is numb but we were jumping up and down over getting him on the draft - where did we gain?
Yankee27 - well done

You are always adding insights that aren't available anywhere else. Thanks.

Shockey was done here. Good luck to him. I suspect he really won't be missed
TAOC - good point
Torrag : 7/21/2008 4:53 pm : link
if Shockey couldn't pass a physical in April that would explain a lot. Reese doesn't normally miss a trick that I have seen.
I guess things were really bad
djm : 7/21/2008 4:54 pm : link
but I can't help but think that Reese didn't handle this the right way. We could have gotten a 08 2nd and 5th...

Whatever happens Reese did not handle this correctly. Reese takes no crap and I guess he took a calculated risk back in April. It didn't work out.

Shockey will do great things for the Saints. We will be lucky to find another Shockey but Boss has upside and we have depth at WR. Still, I will miss Shockey. HE was fun to watch.

BigBlueBuff : 7/21/2008 4:54 pm : link
We got more than the value of the pick during his contribution during the player and now he doesn't want to be a New York Giant anymore.

Imagine if Shockey was a 6 year old car. Wouldn't you be happy to get 50% back on your initial investment, especially for a car that broke down every year and dropped a hubcap at key moments (not to mention honking at police of it's own volition...)
Maybe
Gene Too : 7/21/2008 4:57 pm : link
the Saints were the only team who wanted him?

Some of you are acting like GM's were crawling over each other, to get him.

Who cares if he plays for an NFC team!

djm how did Reese not handle this correctly?
section125 : 7/21/2008 5:09 pm : link
I think Reese wanted Shockey here and starting in 2008. If he could have stolen a #2 and maybe a #3 on draft day, he makes the trade. He didn't, so the value wasn't there.
Now he had a disgruntled player, a malcontent coming into camp, stirring up shit when coming off a Super Bowl is difficult enough. Looking at his agent, renegotiations would have been brutal.

He accomplished:
1.) Got rid of a malcontent
2.) Picked up 2 picks next year
3.) Caught the attention of every player on the Giants (if he'll get rid of Shockey, he'll get rid of me)
4.) Probably made the team healthier for the year
Adios #80
SanFranGiantsFan : 7/21/2008 5:27 pm : link
Wish ya well. It had to be done. He was going to be a major distreaction.

In Boss I trust.
Love Shockey as a player
NYG27 : 7/21/2008 5:31 pm : link
but if he didn't want to be here anymore, more then happy with a 2nd and 5th round picks.

If the trade had to happen, I'm glad we got the picks in the 2009 draft instead of the 2008. Along with the comp picks we get for losing Wilson, Mitchell and Torbor. Reese will have a field day and have the flexibility to move up or down at will next draft.
See Ya
Harry53 : 7/21/2008 5:32 pm : link
as I said after he missed the ring ceremony Shockey would never play another down again for the Giants. Do you morons realize we won the superbowl with out him and he is a me first player that is a cancer to the team? Our team is filled with 1st and second year players that can get up the field. How good do you think Steve Smith is going to be this year? We will be fine and our team will be better than it was last year.
What's the deal?
Pete in Marietta : 7/21/2008 5:49 pm : link
I didn't read every post in the thread. Is the thread starter correct, Shockey for a #2 and a #5?
If so, we gave him away.

We'll miss his presence on the field. It's one thing to sneak through the playoffs without him, it's another to play the upcoming season and make another round of playoffs without his blocking and pass catching skills.
If Boss

I am not killing Resse but he could have gotten 2nd and 5th rounders (or the saftey) in this past draft. Today's picks have more value than next year's picks. This is assuming that the rumors were true of course.

It's nitpicking but looking back, Reese should have taken the picks back in April. That said, I can't blame Reese for taking a chance that things could have been worked out between Shockey and NY but in the end things fell apart.

If shockey can stay healthy
crick78 : 7/21/2008 6:29 pm : link
and run the right routes he'll be a very good weapon for the saints. However, reggie bush and the Duece got some added blocking. Just because shockey went to the saints doesn't mean they are getting the shockey from 2002. That guy is long gone.
all I know is...
djm : 7/21/2008 6:30 pm : link
It's never a good thing when you trade an established vet who is under 30 for a 2nd round pick. Let's hope we don't live to regret this move. I don't care how often Shockey is hurt, the guy can play with the best of em. We lost a player who commanded consistent double teams. Shockey was a fan favorite who had a chance to finish his career with some insane numbers for a TE. Today sucks. .
"It's one thing to sneak through the playoffs..."
dibc : 7/21/2008 6:32 pm : link
Yup, it's a good thing none of the other teams were trying to win games in the playoffs. Now, when we get to next year and the other teams actually start game-planning for us then we're in trouble.

Sometimes this stuff writes itself....
I hope I am wrong
djm : 7/21/2008 6:34 pm : link
but I think Shockey has a chance to blow up this year. 80-10 and 900 is within his grasp. Even worse, playoff success is a legit possiblity. I wouldn't want to face that offense in a big spot. Especially in the dome.
he has an equal chance

RELICDOA : 7/21/2008 6:51 pm : link
Could have been an all time great Giant if he was more mature. Injuries and immaturity has ruined a potential great carreer. He does not deserve to be a New York Giant. So many Ghost of the past must be roling over in their graves over his actions. How many players demand being traded right after winning the superbowl? He might be the first. Anyway I wish we got Taylor in that three way trade.

Reese I am sure will take advantage of an extra 2 and 5. This guy is like King Midas. Hopefully this draft class turns out like last year and the Saints go 0-16.

I hope Coughlin bitchslaps that punkass bitch on his way out!!!!!!
Steve Smith Impact
JoeG : 7/21/2008 6:51 pm : link
You can now PEN Steve Smith in for 60 catches and 750 yards.
Couldn't replace Shockey with a 2nd round pick last April
baadbill : 7/21/2008 7:00 pm : link
and won't be able to replace him with a 2nd round pick next year... if Reese felt 2nd round wasn't enough in April, then it's pretty obvious that the Giants simply caved in to Shockey's tantrum ... and I hate the fact they rewarded his bad behavior.
djm-a big part of why Shockey wasn't dealt
Pitt G-man Dan : 7/21/2008 7:00 pm : link
on draft day was because he couldn't pass a physical. This was the Giants only option - he didn't want to be here, plain and simple.

not a fun quote, the business side of the NFL is a harsh reality, Plax, nothing personal, they only have so much money to go around.

Quote:
(You feel you're not as important to them as you thought you were?)
Evidently not. We've been trying to get this thing done and it doesn't seem like it's really important to them. But it's not the first time this has happened to a player, even a guy like myself who wants to be around and wants to retire a Giant. It never should have gotten to this point. I'm not saying I don't want to be around. I don't want to leave. That's the most encouraging thing is I don't want to leave. But there's apparently more to it.

Plax is bummed.

It was no media fabrication. The Giants got good value considering that and the injury. Still wish he would have matured and been a Giant for life.
