Foxsports-Giants/Saints reach a deal for Shockey?

yankees78 : 7/21/2008 2:13 pm
Please don't kill me..if discussed already..I'll delete.

Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.

The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

one of the best blocking tight ends in the league, still a threat with the ball, takes away concentration in the middle of the field and spreads it to plax and toomer... redskins got better yesterday and i think this makes us worse

I think this is best, it's incredibly depressing and unfortunate. I always liked Shockey. But there is also no one to blame in this situation but Shockey himself.
Matthews was becoming a pretty good blocker at year's end

Don't forget about him.

Man, even with all the drama, I'm going to miss Shockey like hell.

in Louisiana, he will flourish. BIG IF, however. This could be a great trade. I am looking forward to seeing what Reese does with that #2 next year.
This is depressing...

Not happy at all. Though neither was Shockey I guess. One of my favorite players. I hope this falls through, but Glazer is a big fish in this game.

Shit.

It will be funny now to see how he'll switch from being underrated to overrated around here...

if he wanted to be here (and play out his current contract) a trade would never have been on the table.

I blame Rosenhaus, he took advantage of shockey's ego.

We won a Super Bowl without Shockey. We did not win BECAUSE we did not have Shockey.

Those two are completely correlative.

I'm not all that broken up. Shockey's Giant career didn't resemble anything close to what I thought it would, though he is a really good player when healthy. He looked like a superstar in the making during his rookie year.
It'll be interesting to see what Matt
Kyle in NY : 7/21/2008 2:24 pm : link
can find. It looks bad on paper just because he's a great player and is an excellent pass catcher and blocker. But we may find out that Shockey had no plans to report to training camp and was simply refusing to play for the Giants. We may find that he basically forced the Giants hand here
Shockey's already picturing himself....

I was a HUGE shockey fan. I will be again when he gets his act together.
I'm only dissapointed because
Mellowmood92 : 7/21/2008 2:25 pm : link
the giants could have used that pick to draft Trevor Laws, who was drafted about 7 picks later by Philadelphia.. other than that they got more following all of this negative media, then i thought they'd get (if it's true of course)
Crap.
MadPlaid : 7/21/2008 2:25 pm : link
I was really hoping Shockey would cool down, and report to camp. That everything would work out, and he and the Giants would do great things together this year. This is a very sad day. Shockey was a very important part of the Giants' success. They will be all right in the long run, but right now, things kind of suck.
I will miss his

intensity, I always got a little more pumped when he did his thing after the catch. Who ever thought one of the 2 players who visited Wellington Mara in his last days, would no longer want to be a Giant?
You had to see this coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GiantBlue : 7/21/2008 2:25 pm : link
No way JR wanted his distraction either to the team or Eli.

Also, frees up the money necessary for him to announce the finalization of Plax's new deal and the signing of Phillips and Thomas.

Interesting.

I loved Shockey's potential.....but he just didn't seem to ever put it all together!
Shockey is a perfect fit
Mike fr Warwick : 7/21/2008 2:25 pm : link
in the Saints offense. This can come back to haunt the Giants.
The Saints had over 700 yards reciving from 2 guys that would not even make most teams. Shockey will go for 1000 yards and make the Bush matchup really tough.

I have said all spring/summer trade him but not to the Saints. Shockey goes back to being a playmaker/weapon not a TE.
Excellent

receiver?

Not so much.

All things considered, though
Dubs : 7/21/2008 2:25 pm : link
An 2nd and a 5th is a pretty decent haul for an oft-injured TE. Still, Shockey, when healthy, was a top TE in the league. If he comes back to full form we could be bit in the ass. That being said, Boss showed up late last year, so I have high hopes, as long as he can get his blocking down pat.
this blows

We are going to have tons of ammo, 11 or 12 picks.
I like what we did in this years draft

but it would have been nice to have this done then and grab a TE.

once the mini camp stuff happened, and the Giants were not going to extend his deal, this was the only way out. Be happy the Giants got a 2nd and 5th, which was what they wanted in April anyway. Unfortunately, the Saints figure to be better this year, so the picks won't be as high. Reese's comments last night sealed Shockey's fate.
...
DanMetroMan : 7/21/2008 2:25 pm : link
The Giants have reportedly agreed to trade Jeremy Shockey to the Saints in exchange for second- and fifth-round picks.
Amazing that Shockey cost more than Jonathan Vilma and Jason Taylor. The Giants turned down the same offer in April, but decided that eliminating potential distractions was important enough to trade a good, young talent. They're also clearly confident in second-year man Kevin Boss taking over as a starter. Jul. 21 - 2:15 pm et

and hated Reese. NO is better for him. It sucks for the Giants though.

Now all you Shockey haters will see what life without Jeremy will be like.

And Reese did blow it. NO will be better this year and their draft pics will be worse.
wow...everyone
Wuphat : 7/21/2008 2:26 pm : link
saying that this is a bad move must be remembering Shockey's great playoff performance on the way to his Super Bowl MVP...wait...never mind.
Wow...
Saos1n : 7/21/2008 2:26 pm : link
Finally glad to get this over with...

I love Shockey...Always have, but the non stop reports and rumors, though maybe not coming from Shockey, but nor did he ever deny them, were getting old and drove into the ground...

Good luck to him in New Orleans...
Shockey forced opposing DC's to gameplan around him
Mike in NY : 7/21/2008 2:26 pm : link
Yet our offense was much more consistent when Boss was in the game. Shockey, for all of his positives, dropped far too many passes and has terrible route running ability. Moreover, he has clearly voiced his displeasure being a blocker. In Giants Stadium you win by establishing the run, and if Shockey is not going to be part of that then good riddance and don't let the door hit you on the way out
I don't see how
moespree : 7/21/2008 2:26 pm : link
You can say this is a bad idea if Reese did it. Doesn't Reese deserve the fact that, he knows what he is doing. And if he thinks this was a smart decision, than it was a smart decision. He's all ready proven to be a fantastic drafter, and just got two picks to play with a year from now, one of them a high pick.
There is a chemisty argument here,
GiantFilthy : 7/21/2008 2:26 pm : link
but talent wise, we just got a lot worse.
Boss is a good pass catcher
Dubs : 7/21/2008 2:27 pm : link
Matthews is a good blocker

And Johnson is a happy combination of the two.

We'll be fine at TE. Johnson was impressive pre-injury.
Matt -this is not what they wanted in April
UberAlias : 7/21/2008 2:27 pm : link
That would have been a 2008 2nd and 5th.
