Foxsports-Giants/Saints reach a deal for Shockey?

yankees78 : 7/21/2008 2:13 pm
Please don't kill me..if discussed already..I'll delete.

Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.

The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

I can't buy the Reese line this time around. If Shockey is traded, it isn't something the Giants wanted to do. It's something they think they needed to do.
wow some serious bitterness toward #80

coming out of the woodwork.
This sucks...
Giants11737 : 7/21/2008 2:27 pm : link
but at least he didn't go to another team in the NFC EAST; that would have been brutal.
Shit

there goes any chance at winning a Super Bowl.
As always...
SB : 7/21/2008 2:27 pm : link
in Reese I trust.

And it looks like Shockey was a d0uche like the leaked stories said.

I think we miss his blocking and too bad we won't see any Shockey-Boss 2 TE sets.
this definitely means
Bill : 7/21/2008 2:27 pm : link
that the Redskins are the team to beat in the East
Ultimately...

Shockey couldn't get past his pride and keep his mouth shut. Now he gets his wish. Oh well, hopefully the Saints suck and that is a high second rounder.
Not surprised that the deal is done

(allegedly). More surprised at the timing.

Chemistry is everything.

Nobody has more talent than Dallas.
Hopefully Boss has more than 5 receptions
Dave in Hoboken : 7/21/2008 2:28 pm : link
in a 7 game span this year. Oh, and improves his blocking by about a TON. Ugh, TE is a major hole on this team now.
Its not whining, he (Shockey) acted like a douchebag post-SB
Kyle : 7/21/2008 2:28 pm : link
The anger here on this thread is that this trade does not help the 2008 New York Football Giants. We cannot do anything with the picks until 2009 (obviously), this gives an NFC rival a huge receiving upgrade in a pass-happy offense, and leaves us with a pretty shaky situation at TE.

I really hope we add a veteran TE. Nothing spectacular or even good, just a solid body who can catch to provide depth and insurance. Kevin Boss played well in the 2007 finale against the Patriots and he had a whopping 5 catches in 4 playoff games. Meaning... he's still an unknown.
this will free up some space for plax

we still need to replace the talent next year though

The Shockey haters will see what life is like without Jeremy? We got a good look a few months ago, and we won the SB.
The only part I like...
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/21/2008 2:29 pm : link
is that I will see shockey play every year in Carolina and hopefully beat the piss out of those bastards.

I only hope that when Jacobs/Bradshaw/Ward get stuffed on a 3rd and short that some twat doesn't post what a shitty job the backs are doing. We will miss #80's blocking as much as we will miss the other stuff.
Listen to Fatcesa gloat about Shockey

Burtman : 7/21/2008 2:29 pm : link
so much for my shockey jersey. It sucks that the Saints are in the conference and this helps them a lot. It also sucks that the draft picks are going to be near the bottom of each round unless the Saints fall apart. This instantly helps both their pass and run games. I hope this doesn't end up costing the Giants in January.
Fuuuuuuuuuck.

Shockey may have a 2nd act of the Saints. I doubt he plays more then 10 games though. But the way TC uses the TE Shockey is used up in the Giants scheme. Two #2's next year is sweet.
How could you possibly not buy the Reese line?
moespree : 7/21/2008 2:30 pm : link
The man won a Super Bowl in his first year as GM? (Sure EA had a lot to do with the players, etc), but still doesn't Reese deserve the benefit of the doubt, that this was a wise decision for the benefit of the Giants in the future?

No Strahan, Barber, Shockey. This IS Eli's team.
My only comment (promise)
Big Blue '56 : 7/21/2008 2:30 pm : link
We just got a whole lot weaker at TE...
Long-term this is probably a good move
Kyle : 7/21/2008 2:30 pm : link
Short-term this is awful.
We will miss him on the field

If I'm Gilbride
Motley Blue : 7/21/2008 2:31 pm : link
I'm drawing up some plays with Jacobs lined up at TE.
Last year without Shockey the Saints
Mike fr Warwick : 7/21/2008 2:31 pm : link
Led the NFC in 3rd down conversion rate and 1st downs. That was without the keystone to the design of the offense a true recieving mismatch TE. They are going to be tough to get off the field. Brees must be salvitating right now.
I think our chancs of repeating are better with Jeremy then without
SGMen : 7/21/2008 2:32 pm : link
BUT at the same time you want to get value for a guy if he doesn't want to be here and I think we did well enough here with two draft picks.

I can see us with a #1, two #2's, two #3's (comp for Gibril Wilson), a #4, two # 5's, two #6's (comp for Kawika Mitchell) and a number 7. With extra picks you have room to maneuver on draft day to go after someone you may like should they drop.

This trade also tells me that they feel TE Darcy Johnson is going to be ready for camp. He has some experience and will become the #3 TE then, I guess.

CT Phantom : 7/21/2008 2:32 pm : link
Funny thing about draft picks is they sometimes don't wind up where you expected them. Just ask Dallas if they thought the Browns choice would be in the 20's.
I think we will get along, that said
#10* : 7/21/2008 2:32 pm : link
Its a sad day for giants fans if true. Always thought Shock would retire a Giant. I can't believe they couldn't mediate this problem of blocking and passing routes. Doesn't make sense.
Damn it all!

I was having a pretty good day (for a Monday, anyway).

Until now.

What to do with my Shockey jersey now? Collect dust alnog with my Sehorn jersey, I guess.

Damn!
Last year my 2nd favorite team was Cleveland
TheShocker80 : 7/21/2008 2:32 pm : link
for obvious reasons.

This year my 2nd favorite team will be whoever is playing the Saints.

but not indispensable. have to show team first. he has never played a whole season and we'll see what happens. he'll miss new york and a second and a fifth could be better than a season of discontent or a season on the ir

The Giants wanted a 2nd and 5th in 2008. The Saints danced around with it (2nd and 6th or a 2nd and 2009 5th). The Giants at least are going to still be getting back that second rounder and 5th rounder, and as I said above, I agree not as good as what was on the table. Ultimately, the Giants drew the line in the sand on that 2008 5th rounder and hoped to win Shockey back (without a new contract). It became clear that wasn't going to happen. 3-4 weeks ago, as I posted when I heard it, I was told that Reese re-opened the lines of communication with teams to trade Shockey, and furthermore I was told that (my source) felt he was getting traded during or before camp. I have to think that the Giants were in on the Taylor trade, which is why the Redskins worked so fast to complete it last night. My own guess, and I'll look into it, is the Giants/Dolphins/Saints had been working towards the completion of the deal, with the Saints sending multiple picks to the Dolphins. The Redskins gave up the multiple picks right away, and with the legwork already done between the Giants and Saints, they decided to pull the trigger now and get it over with before camp so all parties can move on. Bottom line, as I had been posting for months, I don't think Shockey was coming back after this year anyway, and certainly not after 2009 with is cap number. They need that money to re-sign Plaxico, Jacobs, and then give a monster deal to Eli. The Giants wanted Shockey for 2008 and go from there, Shockey wasn't interested, it was time to move on.
agreed fatman
DCPollaro : 7/21/2008 2:33 pm : link
we will definitley miss his blocking

i like getting picks..but we need to replace the talent
Why would blame the Saints for this?
jarrodbunch : 7/21/2008 2:33 pm : link
It's more Shockey's fault.
The Saints..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/21/2008 2:33 pm : link
could be good enough this year that the 2nd rounder is about the same as a 3rd rounder.
SGMen, how on Earth are we better?
Kyle : 7/21/2008 2:33 pm : link
We're going into camp with two #2 TEs and a #3 TE on the roster.

That's not a good thing...

The running game did not IMPROVE after Tiki left, but the dropoff was insignificant. Best case scenario, that's what we have here: we do not IMPROVE without Shockey on the roster, but the dropoff is minuscule.
All I can say is
bigbluewreckingcrew25 : 7/21/2008 2:34 pm : link
fuck
Actually, this is probably worth a little less...
MOOPS : 7/21/2008 2:34 pm : link
than we could have gotten in April. The Saints' #2 next year will probably be in the 20-25 range (mid to late 50s overall). But it still wouldn't get any better at this point. I do think next year's draft is expected to be deeper than this year.
alright

see you shock, you played with great emotion, but you were an asshole.

CT Phantom : 7/21/2008 2:34 pm : link
Or it could decline because Shock is demanding the ball every 3rd down, taking chances away from Bush, & he makes fun of Drew's birthmark.
Only time will tell
Kyle in NY : 7/21/2008 2:35 pm : link
if Reese made a huge mistake here. I'm not happy about this. Shockey was one of my favorites. I was always hoping that he would be a Giant this year but all signs pointed to him leaving. This certainly won't help us this year as we lost a great talent. But he's always been very injury prone and it may turn out that his body doesn't have a lot left. Time will tell if this is a mistake.
how deep is the draft next year?
jgambrosio : 7/21/2008 2:35 pm : link
with 11-12 picks next year, it's going to be interesting. i wonder if they implement a cap structure and we're able to trade up early into the first.
To those that say it was a mistake
Mike in NY : 7/21/2008 2:35 pm : link
When was the last time you saw Shockey make a play like Boss did on the 45 yard reception in the Super Bowl? Boss is not as explosive as Shockey and likely won't have the same reception totals, but let's stop acting like he is Howard Cross Part II (that is Michael Matthews). In his brief career as a starter, Boss showed a nice ability to get on the same page as Eli and to find soft spots in opposing defenses. If he keeps it up, there is no reason he cannot be a 40-50 catch per year TE during his prime with more than adequate run blocking ability
Hate this deal

but it was done so we have the cash to sign Plaxico and Jacobs.
