Foxsports-Giants/Saints reach a deal for Shockey?

yankees78 : 7/21/2008 2:13 pm
Please don't kill me..if discussed already..I'll delete.

Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.

The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

Shockey's loss hurt the running game
PEEJ : 7/21/2008 2:36 pm : link
more than the passing game. With S. Smith the Giants will go to more 3-wide and less 2 TE

Thanks for the info. Looks like you were spot on.

Jacobs became a very good blocker as the year went on.
I wouldn't use him like they used Shockey, but Jacobs is a monster and I could see him as a very good blocker and it's another way to get him and Bradshaw on the field at the same time.
Here's some sour grapes for us all.
Paul K. : 7/21/2008 2:37 pm : link
He really wasn't utilized to his full potential in the passing game under Coughlin.

With Smith coming on and now Mannghim in the wings, Eli has only so many balls to go around...

Those grapes ain't all sour....

I think you nailed it...When Shockey managed to hold onto a pass, how many times did you see him turn around and just go to the ground...he showed none of the explosiveness he had in his first few years.
I expect to see
Larry from WV : 7/21/2008 2:37 pm : link
a lot more three wide sets this year.
The Jeremy Shockey era has finally come to an end.
NorwoodWideRight : 7/21/2008 2:38 pm : link
I'm glad the Giants got a 2nd for him. It's clear that he needed to be dealt. This was an oil and vinegar situation that would have caused a major distraction the team did not need in their attempt to repeat. Boss will surprise a lot of folks but, at least right now, he doesn't have the talent that Shockey showed a couple of years back. In the end, I think all will be fine.
we'll all be happy
bluefin : 7/21/2008 2:38 pm : link
with the players that Reese takes in next year's 2nd and 5th rounds. The New Giants Dynasty just got ahead of schedule.
I suspect we'll hear something about Plax's

new contract very soon.
He still has to pass a physical, right?
buford : 7/21/2008 2:38 pm : link
It will be interesting to see what Shockey says when he does go. My bet is the NY media will miss him the most.
Can I just throw this out there?
BoldRuler : 7/21/2008 2:38 pm : link
Is having the talent on the field with a player that is often injured/slowing down/doesn't want to play for NY, better than NOT having the issues he would bring to the locker room? I think we are forgetting that Shockey was not nearly the guy we saw as a rookie. I hate to say it, but I think not having the distraction will benefit the Giants more than having his talent on the field.
so any good TEs coming out

next year?

BigBlue TT : 7/21/2008 2:39 pm : link
'Shock'ed is the only way to describe it. Philcore, I have 2 shockey jerseys as well, looks like they are going to the back of the closet with #21. I'm gonna miss Shock, but I'm not gonna miss the drama that surrounds him. Boss, Darcy and MM better be ready.

Drew Brees' Fantast stock just shot up.

Thanks for the memories #80.
I may regret this later

Saints tight ends
HomerJones45 : 7/21/2008 2:39 pm : link
the Saints tight ends last year (Johnson and Miller) combined for 75 receptions, 706 yards and 4td.

Shockey had 57 receptions, 619 yards and 3 td's last year.
Brees set the record for completions
Mike fr Warwick : 7/21/2008 2:40 pm : link
in the regular season with 440 last year. He completed over 67% of his passes. Without a Shockey type TE the offense is designed for. Most 1st downs and best 3rd down conversion, NFL record for completions a 67% completion rate and now they have Shockey. Plus its going to free Bush up. N.O. will have the best offense in the NFC next year. Better then the Boys.
No offense...

but can we hold back from comments like this:

Shockey is gone it appears. Let's not make him out to be either the best player ever to wear blue or that he was some sort of liability on the field.

If we didn't play the Saints this year, I'd feel better about the trade. But even then, I think we will have a glaring need at blocking, and we will have to utilize 1-dimensional TE's to do the two jobs shockey did well.
With everything
buckets : 7/21/2008 2:40 pm : link
that Dallas, Philly, and Washington have added I am starting to get very nervous about all the subtractions our team has made. Everyone in the NFC East has made efforts to bolster their rosters except the Giants.

My main concern is when we play Dallas. Shockey always stretched the field against them which opened things up for other guys. I don't see Boss being able to do the same. I hope I am wrong.

Who are the big TE's to watch in college football this year? I only know the University of Miami's roster and they don't have anything coming out next year.

Fantasy stock got higher, but only for the first few games until Shock re-injures himself. By the way, he still isn't ready to practice 100 % yet.

Motley Blue : 7/21/2008 2:41 pm : link
Why?

Kiwi can go to LB.

Tuck can move around.

Jacobs has lined up at WR for us before.

Shockey has been split out wide.

You guys act like a guy can only do one thing for a football team.

I guess you scratch your heads every time Vrabel catches a TD from Tom Brady too.

I LOVE SHOCKEY!!!!!!

it had to be done. We have 5 WRs and Boss behind Plax - they will ease the burden in the passing game. The emergence of Steve Smith as a legit #2 becomes all the more important as well.

I'm relieved.
I really hate seeing Shockey go.

FatHeadTommy : 7/21/2008 2:42 pm : link
I think inside the team there really was a feeling (after the play-off run without Shockey) that his talent and contribution to the team was far outweighed by his devisive, distration-prone, spoiled child personna. You must factor in his failure to work-out with the team offseason, his obvious displeasure with his role, his many and significant injuries, his dropped passes, and his disrespect for the leadership of his young quaterback. I AM GLAD TO SEE HIM GO. A spoiled brat makes it hard for the committed guys to stay on task and solidify as one cohesive unit.
I hope NO sucks next year.
Jim in Forest Hills : 7/21/2008 2:42 pm : link
get that pick up.
If this trade does go through, which should,
micky : 7/21/2008 2:42 pm : link
then I can say that I'm a little disappointed that things between the Giants and Shockey didn't work out. Shockey is still a very good TE and his blocking abilities (all around TE) will be missed to a degree. However, if he was/is going to be detrimental to the team and he's truly unhappy here then it is a wise decision to move him. Wish him the best.

Giants will and can win with or without him.

None of you can figure out
Randal Graves : 7/21/2008 2:42 pm : link
That Shockey forced his way off the Giants? There's no way the Giants would have traded him if he wanted to play for them. The Saints have as much chance of picking 1st in the 2nd round as they do last. No one knows at this point who the playoff teams will be. In 07 the Cowboys thought they stole a top 10 or even top 5 08 pick from the Browns and it wound up in the 20's. Save the nonsense about it being close to a 3rd rounder. No one knows. This was the best trade out there for a player who was going to try to do to the Giants what Owens did the to the Eagles. The Giants won't miss him on 3rd and 2 either. They'll bring in another linemen. They'll miss him more on 3rd and 10. He will be missed on the field but he forced his way off the team. So good luck in NO until he breaks down again, which won't take long.
fucking Doomed
Paulie Walnuts : 7/21/2008 2:42 pm : link
shit
I think Shockey wanted out...
SB : 7/21/2008 2:42 pm : link
...because he knew he'd be blamed by the press and a lot of fans if the Giants didn't repeat as SB champs. As far as he's concerned, there was no upside for him to stay.

Shockey is probably too sensitive, but F the media for constantly ragging on him like he's some sort of criminal. You'd think the guy was Pac Man Jones with some of the crap that was writen about him by the beat writers and some posters here.
People are already clamoring for a new TE next year...
Dubs : 7/21/2008 2:43 pm : link
When we have three guys on the roster (Matthews, Johnson and Boss) who all have potential.
As far as the Saints are concerned

I always thought eventually, he'd see the light. But, he didn't, so we move on. This leaves us great flexibility for next yr's draft. We still have more than enough weapons in Plax, Toomer, Jacobs, Bradshaw, Boss, Ward, Manningham, Moss, etc. etc. etc.
This is FINALLY Couglin's, Reese & Eli's team

The Giants agree. The PR machine has been working towards this as well. Pat Hanlon is good at his job. The moment that arguement with Reese was leaked to Vinnie DiTrani, in my mind, that was the beginning of Shockey's obit on the Giants. They were painting him as a malcontent not happy with the team, and his actions did nothing to change it. Throw in Plaxico, Strahan, and Tuck's comments about moving him on if he doesn't want to be there...and Reese's eerily similar statement in the press this morning, Shockey was a goner, it was a matter of when. The next key, let's see what happens with Shockey's contract in New Orleans, and how fast he either gets a new deal, or they agree to guarentee parts in his remaining salary.
Shockey was my favorite player but this deal had to get done
Anak : 7/21/2008 2:45 pm : link
We weren't able to get a first rounder out of it so a second rounder was just as good. Shockey hasn't played a 16 game season yet so this might end up being a steal for us.
