Foxsports-Giants/Saints reach a deal for Shockey?

yankees78 : 7/21/2008 2:13 pm
Please don't kill me..if discussed already..I'll delete.

Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.

The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

Had high hopes for Shockey...

...in the end he finishes as the 3rd best Tight End in team history - not too shabby.

As much as I dislike Shockey's personality, I WILL miss his blocking - I expect the rushing attack to suffer.
My only gripe is
RoadWarriorz : 7/21/2008 2:57 pm : link
We should of did this last draft, we could of drafted a linebacker with the #2. Good luck in NO Shockey.

Shockey would have taken that catch to the house.
I'll miss Shockey

but it is no suprise that the minute all of the loud mouth me first players(Petigout, Feely, Tiki and Shockey)were absent from the locker room. The giants and Eli started playing their best ball. Shockey will be missed but not by much. Also I think getting two good picks for a tight end who is always hurt, slowing down and getting older. Was a steal by Reese(should have made the trade in april). Maybe the reason Kevin Boss and Eli had such a good connection might have been because Boss was always where he was suppose to be at the right time.

I don't think there's any doubt that this trade weakens the Giants in 2008. But I still support the trade.

#2 pick + $4mm > Shockey

Guys this is fantastic. No distraction, development of Boss

a chance to develop Johnson or someone else and 2 good picks for next yr's draft.

I love this. We won the SB w/o him late in the year. We can do this. I cannot believe we still got this deal.

No Shock = more doubleteams for the WRs......
doncam : 7/21/2008 2:58 pm : link
which means more oppurtunities for Steve Smith in the slot in a 3 wide set. I like our chances in that set up.

I leave BBI for a minute to do a little work and this???

What next, Eli traded to the Bears for a 3rd and 4th?
I like the trade
dcp : 7/21/2008 2:58 pm : link
Eli will blossom in the three wides with Plax, Toomer and Smith/Manningham/Moss. Chemistry-wise a great move. Also, Shockey would not have been 100% coming off the broken leg so to get a 2nd and a 5th in next years draft is big.

The only negative is in run blocking where Shockey excelled. Boss is nowhere near ready for that load so Matthews will be the every down TE. Our TE play is not as important as Dallas with Witten or KC with Gonzales.

Looks like I'll have to find some other use for my Shockey jersey.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised
PetesHereNow : 7/21/2008 2:58 pm : link
Reese sends a clear message that it's his way or the highway. I don't mind that idea so much when I know my GM can draft his butt off. Would have been nice to see a healthy and happy Shockey w/ an Eli that has his crap together, but going forward, how healthy and happy would Shockey have been?
it's all Eli's fault...
SHO'NUFF : 7/21/2008 2:58 pm : link
chasing away Tiki, Strahan and Shockey...the best trio in Giants history...damnit, Eli!
Crap...

Man I hope Boss is coached up alot on his blocking in training camp. I was looking forward to seeing Shockey come back this year.

Mixed emotions. I didn't like the antics on the sideline but I loved the effort on the field. He was a goo dblocker even if he didn't want to do it. More pressure on Boss now!
shouldn't we file tampering charges against the Saints?
SHO'NUFF : 7/21/2008 3:00 pm : link
it's obvious that Payton wined and dined Shockey and bribed him with illusions of grandeur...
I'm not too worried about the offense
InTikiITrust : 7/21/2008 3:00 pm : link
but I'm still unsure of this move. Maybe it's because of the Jason Taylor move less than 24 hours ago. But this leaves a somewhat bad taste in my mouth.
Any doubt now
Headhunter : 7/21/2008 3:00 pm : link
that Plax gets his extension before Thursday?
How effective can Shockey be in 2008?
Phil from WNY : 7/21/2008 3:00 pm : link
That was a nasty injury he incurred and it occurred at the end of the year. How long until he's 100%? How long until he can help the Saints?
Just talked to two Saints fans here in the office

They are very pumped up. And NO is playing the Falcons here this year so maybe we'll go to the game. Not like the Falcons sell out LOL!

I do my best. But some chumps never listen to me just because I couldn't have made that catch and run that Boss had. Remember that catch? That. One. Catch?
Love the deal
eleven : 7/21/2008 3:00 pm : link
Jeremy hasn't been the same in a couple of years. He makes a catch and goes right down more often than not. He is part of the old guard. Lots of drops. Very good blocker but too much of a cancer.

Getting a 2 and 5 is a good deal. I wish him nothing but the best. and we did win more without him.

I don't see it that way. The Giants are big about DL rotation. I think if they traded for Taylor, he slots in Strahan's spot at starter, and you'll have seen the Giants rotate the spots, where Osi would get a break, Taylor would shift to the weakside and Tuck would replace him on the strong side. On passing downs, the Giants would have used Taylor in Strahan's spot on the strongside, with Tuck and Kiwi at DT, just like last year. Taylor would have become Strahan, except he'd have slotted in for Osi on the weakside, which is something Strahan didn't do. And come the 4th quarter, you'd have had that group to contend with...all relatively fresh.
Oh, shit...

Matt
cosmicj : 7/21/2008 3:03 pm : link
no argument here. I think rotating all DL is a great idea. But if you want to do it enough to trade for Taylor, why not move Kiwi back to DE? (And put in Alford as the 4th DL in the Four Aces?)

now and in the future. Get rid of the distraction in the short term and get a couple of long term prospects for a TE with a history of injuries. Shockey has already lost a step and probably doesn't have many good years left IMO.

My only complaint is that the Saints will probably be better this year and those draft picks may not be as good as they could have been if we took the deal in April.
Now,
AnishPatel : 7/21/2008 3:05 pm : link
out of all areas, I will be very, very focused on our running game. Hopefully we change some of our plays and compensate for Shockey's loss.

Randal Graves : 7/21/2008 3:05 pm : link
All good points. But Shockey was traded because he forced the Giants into a position where they were afraid that he'd ruin their season the way Owens torpedoed the Eagles. They certainly wanted him as football player. Just not the person that goes with it. Also to paraphrase the incredibly overrated Theo Epstein. The Giants got Jeremy Shockey's best years. It really remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank at this point. He's certainly lost some speed and his pass catching has gotten progressively worse the last few years. I think Sean Peyton is smart enough to know that if he's uses Shockey as an in line blocker the same percentage of the time the Giants did that he won't hold up for a full season. I hope if Shockey becomes a Gates/Gonzalez type TE/WR for the Saints Giants fan realize that he wouldn't be that player in NY because TC has no use for that type of TE. See Pete Mitchell vs. Kyle Brady from way back when. TC wants an in line mauler. I hope the Giants have one ready because it's not Boss.

The Saints may still get cold feet if he opens his mouth over the next few days. Given his injury history it would be easy to flunk him.

he'll pass the physical
