Foxsports-Giants/Saints reach a deal for Shockey?

yankees78 : 7/21/2008 2:13 pm
Please don't kill me..if discussed already..I'll delete.

Jeremy Shockey has finally gotten his wish.

The Giants have agreed to trade their disgruntled tight end to the New Orleans Saints for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, FOXSports.com has learned. The deal is pending league approval, according to a league source.

The compensation is the same the Saints offered New York back in April prior and during to the draft ... and it was turned down.

The move comes one day after Jason Taylor was traded from Miami to New York's NFC East rivals in Washington. According to a report on SI.com, the Giants had held discussions about a three-team trade in which they would have ended up with Taylor, the Saints would have landed Shockey and the Dolphins would have received a pair of draft picks.

The Psychology of fans
JoeMP2003 : 7/21/2008 3:08 pm : link
is very interesting

I have been reading, though not posting on, the Eagles.com board, extremeskins, and a cowboy board for about 6 years

Never once in that time have i heard a good word uttered about Shockey by any of those fan bases. He's overrated, Cooley is way better, Witten is way better, LJ Smith is better (according to eagle fans at one point). He cannot block, hes a headache, a cancer, etc

So you would think the Giants dealing him would be met with a lot of "good move" responses

Nope. Now all of a sudden Mr. Overrated is the best TE to ever play the game and we will miss him dearly
hmmmm

So on Skins/Eagles/Cowboys boards they think their players are the greatest in the NFL? And you are shocked to see BBI now thinks Shockey was great?

so true. Look for RodneyHamp to make his appearance in Mets threads once the trade becomes official!
It's a good point - we lack objectivity
cosmicj : 7/21/2008 3:17 pm : link
so we should take the actual trade as a solid and reasoned appraisal of Shockey's worth to the experts. A 2nd and a 5th means we lost a pretty good veteran player but one who may have been worth more to the Saints than to other teams because of their offensive system.
More like good riddance
JoeMP2003 : 7/21/2008 3:18 pm : link
he wanted out

Im not really sappy about Shockey no longer being a Giant. He wanted this. He was one of my favorite all time athletes for a short period, but he went out like a whiny little bitch

Hope he does nothing with the Saints
Saints fans must be thrilled

You have to admit that on the Cowboys' board, their love for Roy Williams was completely destroyed by watching #80 kick his ass in just about every meeting.
only BBI'ers..
BillKo : 7/21/2008 3:19 pm : link
Could turn a 2 and a 5 into a 3 and a 6….way too funny. It’s a fine trade. Shockey had to go….it’s obvious he wanted out and would have been a huge distraction, with SB champ doesn’t need. He was the last player that tried to overshadow Eli. Before Shockey, it was Tiki. Everyone on that offense now looks to Eli, not beyond him.
Shockey
Fish : 7/21/2008 3:21 pm : link
was a force to be reckoned with. Teams that play us will not have to deal with a presence like Shockey anymore. Yes, we have other players but Shockey gave us a swagger that we will miss. On the other hand Eli will evolve and be that guy who makes us forget we had Shock. I will not forget him and he will be awesome on the Saints with Bush, Colston and Brees.
I rarely wish players ill will....
manh george : 7/21/2008 3:22 pm : link
but in this case, my fondest wish is that one of his myriad weak spots--feet and ankles--show up before the end of the exhibition season. I don't believe he is capable of a complete healthy season, and given his antics, good riddance to him.

What a whiner.

on the field and in the draft room - that's the good news. I wish the guy luck in New Orleans. I think he'll do well - Brees was pretty good with Gates back in SD. Now Shockey's no Gates at this point, but with NO's weapons on Offense, Jeremy will do well if he can stay on the field (he'll probably end up playing all 16 this year!). And the Giants got 2 picks out of the deal - apparently refusal and time did not kill the deal.

Bottom line, the guy didn't want to play here and wanted to move on. The Giants only want positives in the lockerroom - Jeremy was perceived as a deviation to what made them successful on that end in 07-08.

The media will sensationalize this - probably show video of Shockey beating Williams for the 10th time, show him running over that shit-talking safety from Indy a few years ago, golden locks swaying in the wind, tattoos blazing, Pro-Bowl TE, etc - as they should. It makes New Orleans better...remains to be seen what (if anything) it does to the Giants this year.
I just wanted to see #80 play with...
PSIMMS 22-25-268 : 7/21/2008 3:22 pm : link
Steve Smith and Bradshaw. Instead, he played last season with Sinorice Moss and Reuben Droughns. Big difference
I honestly wish him the best

The Giants are all about team and will be better off in the long run without the headache. The Giants just don't feature the TE position enough for Shockey's ego. Jerry Reese will make the 2nd and the 5th pay off next April. I was always a Shockey fan, but I must admit that he would piss me off with his tantrums and dropped balls. The Giants are a flagship NFL franchise that just won the Superbowl. The Saints haven't won d!ck. The Giants play for the greatest fans in the world in the largest media market in the world while the Saints play in a city that is still ravaged and is only partially rebuilt. The Giants will soon play in a state-of-the-art stadium while the stadium situation in New Orleans is bad at best. I think that this a case of "the grass is always greener" and Shockey may regret this move in the long run. Shockey did have some good seasons with Sean Payton so let's see what happens. The Kevin Boss era has officially begun.
This is a good deal
IIT : 7/21/2008 3:23 pm : link
I didn't think we'd get that much for Shockey after the Miami/Skins deal. Second round picks are gold- almost first round talent without the negotiation/salary hassle.

Shockey is a special talent and a crappy person. He tended to put himself ahead of the team, was often a distraction, couldn't stay on the field, and I don't think he got along that well with Manning either.

I can't believe people are whining about how we're going to miss his blocking ability. Nobody cried for blocking like this when Cross retired...

I hope he does well in NO, but I'm happy we got what we did for him before training camp started. Great move by Reese IMO.
The Giants will miss Shockey's blocking more than his
section125 : 7/21/2008 3:24 pm : link
receiving this year. For all those who don't think Boss can do the job, Shockey was not a great blocker for at least his first year and maybe into his second. IMHO, Boss is as fast as Shockey and does have better hands. Not sure he will block as well as Shockey this year, still, but he started out as big as Shockey in his rookie year - 6'5" 255. He needed to get stronger and he probably did, since he was not worn out by the season.

Look, we all loved Shockey, but he was becoming as huge problem and needed to move on. I'm happy to get the picks. Reese (and Coughlin) didn't need distractions after coming off the Super Bowl - we all know how the Giants haved fared in the past.

Boss will be just fine and he will eat up safeties and linebackers as well as Shockey did. With the emergence of Steve Smith and the drafting of Mario Manningham, the offense will still be dominant.

Finally, this does truly free up miney for Plax and maybe Brandon. Remember also, Eli needs to be re-signed.
well looks like the media

will have to choose someone else as the whipping boy

saints will be dangerous if shockey stays healthy

hopefully the young guys can step up in the blocking game and passing game

i think the saints will definitley finish better than they did last year

we play the Saints in the playoffs, Shockey will be licking his chops to beat us. It will be up to our defense to give him a beating like no other. Hello Pierce, Osi and Tuck.....Shockey will be coming for you guys!!!!
My whole thing

as much as i liked Shockey, i like SuperBowl's more.

How many superbowls do the following players have:

Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Chris Cooley, Jason Witten, Kelen Winslow, etc.

0

Technically you argue Shockey in that category too.

What im saying is you dont "need" a TE of that calibre to win. You need a TE that can do his job.

Randal Graves : 7/21/2008 3:26 pm : link
I think the Giants will do ok with the "no swagger/force to be reckoned with" playoff run offense. The Giants didn't win because Shockey got hurt. That's nonsense in my opinion. But they did win without him. That's a fact. Not only did they win but they played the best football any Giant team has played since 1990 doing it. They aren't going to miss him much at this point of his career and with the Giants offensive scheme.
so how far can we move up in the 1st round of the 2009 NFL Draft?

That's good - compare him to WR on another team. Very sound argument. I'm sure you'd rather have Santana than Plax on your team too, right? I'm talking about a Top 10 overall pick at safety specifically assigned to defend top TE's only to see our TE just cream him every time. Guess you forgot in his last game against Roy he had 12 catches for 129 and a TD.

wolverine5611 : 7/21/2008 3:30 pm : link
they threw the ball all over the place last year and did nothing. The key to that team is Deuce. Bush can't run between the tackles and they still don't have a seconday. They will score more points. Make sure you get Brees and Shockey on your Fantasy team.
Good Long Term Move
OntheRoad : 7/21/2008 3:32 pm : link
The Giants are going to get at least one good player out of all this. Reese has a long planning horizon. In five years, instead of a Shockey nearing retirement, we'll have a top young Snee or Tuck coming into his prime, and possibly another contributor from the 5th rounder.

The contribution to team focus and morale cannot be underestimated.

I liked Shockey, too, but he didn't want to be here. Johnson, Boss, and Matthews will be fine.
so does Shockey

Not only because of Payton's design, but because of the demeanor of that team. Brees, Bush, hell Payton himself, these guys get fired up like Shockey. They have attitude. It's a better environment.

thing that cannot be denied is that Shockey is a game changer. Whenever he got involved and made the play good things happened. When he did not get the job done or was unable to get involved many times, bad things happened. He will be missed as a player and his emotion (and as a team mate, according to the players) but his off the field antics and injuries will not be missed. If he doen't want to be here he would not have been very useful IMO. Godd riddance.
