And my recollection is that, just like Jim Brown, he was also the best lacrosse player in the country too.

Sadly, he was diagnosed with Leukemia and died within a year. He is remembered for his decency and elegance in the face of racism (Texas players reportedly spat on him during the Cotton Bowl).
As an interesting sidenote, Davis is buried about 100 yards from Mark Twain and his family in Woodlawn Cemetary in Elmira, NY.
Man, I cannot wait for this movie.

The thing that has struck me most about Davis is the respect and kind words said by everyone about his personal conduct. It is one thing to call a guy a great athlete, but he was also regarded as a great person. In many times, death exaggerates what a great person someone is claimed to be, but in his case, I have heard from too many people to believe there was much exaggeration about it.
And although I hate fantasy football threads, my fantasy teams are often named "Elmira Express" in ernie's honor.
