Question about Brian Dawkins

mjvm52106 : 1/5/2009 11:10 am
I have watched him play for his entire career and though I can't remember when he started wearing the oversized chinstrap with the extra padding, I can say that I believe the NFL should look into the reasons behind wearing it if it should be banned.

Ok, before getting all nasty hear me out.

If that chinstrap and the extra padding is not there because of an old injury (broken jaw, concussions) then you have to wonder why he wears it other than it allows he to go more helmet to helmet than a normal chin strap would. Dawkins is known as a fierce hitter but over the last 5 years his hits to the head (even as a player is going to the ground), have increased dramatically. Right now he has exceeded Rodney Harrison as the cheap shot artist of the NFL and the NFL's most dirtiest player.

That chinstrap is padded heavily allowing for more helmet to helmet contact for Dawkins while keeping the face mask, chin and overall head of his protected far more than the players he is hitting. Would he be so daring if he didn't have that extra piece of padding and protection?
Its regulation

and its available to all the players so this a moot point.

I would take him on my team any day.

I agree that he loves teeing off on guys when either they can't seem him coming or when someone else has them wrapped up already.

He seems to always be either jumping a route on a poorly thrown ball or laying back and waiting to blindside someone, like he'd rather give up a ten yard reception but make a big hit than actually disrupt a reception. I can't say I've seen him cover tight ends or backs particularly well, or make a heads-up tackle against someone coming right at him.

I don't know, but he seems pretty overrated to me.

Overrated nothing

he gave Boldin the shakes in their recent encounter and routinely intimidates opposing receiving groups and offenses from the safety spot. I hate him as a rival and hope he gets what's coming to him but I wish he was on our side and think he's one of the top 3 safeties of this decade.
And regarding Boldin

he's the toughest WR in football. That made Dawkins' effect on him all the more impressive.

the hit to Peterson yesterday was dirty and should be fined for leading with your head.
At htis point in his career

he seems to be getting to those piles a bit late and leading with the helmet. However, he was quite a hitter in his younger days, and not all of them were dirty. He can still lay lumber.

The chinstrap is likely allowed by NFL standards, available to any player, and does not likely have much effect on his play.
The majority of NFL player wear a padded chin strap.
Vin_Cuccs : 1/5/2009 11:26 am : link
The "oversize" as you call is is acutally just a regular sweatband that you put over top of the chin strap to prevent rubbing and irritaion.

A lof of NFL players do it including Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown as well.

Here is the example:

you would take a 35 year old safety on your team any day?

Glad you aren't the Giants GM.

hopefully will call a good game and toss flags for this stuff and excessive holding. However, I am not holding my breath.

it has nothing to do with football, it's code for something else.

A key in the game

will be to account for him on the blitz. If he gets a sack, he will almost certainly cuase a fumble as well - he great at doing that.

we were playing the Cardinals and some corner or safety known for his dirty play took a shot at I think McConkey after he was out of bounds. Czonka was pissed, took over the huddle (you could see him doing all the talking), next two or three plays went to Czonk and he went right at this guy nearly killing him. Didn't matter if he had an opening elsewhere, he just ran right at this dude. There was no need for the league to fine the guy for the late hit, dirty players were dealt with on the field. Love to see Dawkins treated like wise..
Hes 35 and still a game changer
JerseyCityJoe : 1/5/2009 6:54 pm : link
Yeah, he can play for me until he hits about 40.
McConkey and Csonka?
shepherdsam : 1/5/2009 7:03 pm : link
.
Giants have yet to make Dawkins
SoCalJohn : 1/5/2009 9:40 pm : link
pay for the hit on Ike Hilliard. Maybe Sunday is the day they layout the dude with a legit hit. Can you imagine what the Philly team would be like if their toughest player is out for the rest of the game? I would like to see Jacobs put a huge hit on Number 20 and run him over like road kill.
