Jim "Juice" Johnson

Thomas : 1/5/2009 12:24 pm
Hey, I respect this guy for what he's been able to accomplish in the NFL. Same for Buddy Ryan. But does this guy personally stir steroids into his players cereal, or does someone else do it? As far back as I can remember (and this really goes for DAL and PHI) - they have always featured "steroid freaks" on their teams - especially defensively. Or could it be more that the Eagles look for self-made steroid users as part of their employment strategy? Regardless, the use of performance-enhancing drugs looks to be almost a pre-requisite to playing over there.

Lets look at the current defensive lineup. Any suspicious physiques?

I'm going to start with Trent Cole
The guy was 6'2 236 when he was drafted in '05. I remember the undersized LB/DE tweener talk. Now, he's listed at 270 lbs. at NFL.com.

Don't have to go very far for the next prospect: His linemate, DT Brodrick Bunkley. Remember this legendary ball of muscle at the Combine? The guy looked like Appollo Creed with his shirt off. Benched 44 reps at the Combine and ran 5.0 flat.

And then you've got the "Juice Brigade" of other puffy physiques, such as Brian Dawkins, Sheldon Brown, Akeem Jordan, Omar Gaither, Juqua Parker and Chris Gocong. All of these guys just look funny, particularly in the upper body.

And this is on the heels of several high-profile free agent additions with similar physiques - Hugh Douglas, Jeremiah Trotter, Jevon Kearse, Takeo Spikes, etc. And remember SS Michael Lewis? Not that good, but a physical monstrosity.

Anyone else notice this? Is so, do you care? Does it make you hate the Eagles even more? I'm under no illusions that there aren't "users" on the Giants, too, but through the years, these suspicious physiques aren't as apparent for the boys in blue, IMO.
(I thought Wilson, Mitchell and Shockey were 3, and all were shown the door.)
That's really not at all fair

to say about Johnson. There are steroid users all over the league including on the Giants.

I would say no more than any other team

That's quite

an accusation. I'll watch this thread just to see how ridiculous it gets.

If there are guys that juice on PHI, there are guys that juice on NYG. I hate the Eagles more than anyone. If they beat us, it is because they are better on that Sunday.

The nonsense with the roids is silly.
Perhaps...

but adding 20-30 lbs over several years isn't difficult considering normal supplementation these days.
Dude

first off, the NFL roster listing themselves are "juiced". Cole is no where near 270.

Secondly, it is not difficult to gain 35 lbs in 4 years. He had most of 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 to get from 236 to probably 262. That is not difficult.

This thread is ridiculous.
Yeah, this is a bit over the top.

If there are juicers in the NFL, Philly isn't the only team that has them. Let's be realistic here.
Don't go by listed weights

they are usually inaccurate, especially for DL. Some of the players you mentioned were big guys when drafted, so you can't blame the coach. Other's may have gained muscle naturally over time. Some may juice, but that doesn't mean it's a systemic thing coming from the coaching staff.

Many NFL players are physical freaks of some kind.
I don't think...

you want to start throwing around accusations of steroids without looking at the team we root for, too.
Trent Cole actally is a good example

He was drafted at 236 and was 265 by the time he started his 2nd year.

There is an article on the Eagles website where they brag about him adding 30 lbs in one offseason. And on a 6'2" frame. This is a guy who played on the Dline (played at DT, too) for his entire college career. It's not like they were converting him from LB.

That said steroids is a fact of life in the NFL. Giants, Eagles, Cowboys...everyone.
