Giants at Pro Days

Bino5 : 3/27/2009 2:17 am
I'm not sure if these have been mentioned, but figured I would list some of the less obvious pro days that I've seen seen the Giants attended. These had 20 or less teams in attendance and some were less than 10.

Eastern Michigan
Wisconsin
Oklahoma State
Cincinnati(Mike Pope was there watching Connor Barwin)
BYU(Bryan Kehl was also there)
Northwestern
San Diego State
Florida Atlantic
UL-Monroe
UL-Laffayete
Colorado State
New Mexico State
South Florida
Liberty

Also I saw that the Giants put Aaron Maybin through some board work while at PSU. Pat Flaherty was also at the Penn State Pro Day.

Finally I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but on a Clemson board it said that DT Dorell Scott had a visit scheduled with the Giants.

They were at Stanford's Pro Day

A Giants scout either ran or was involved in running drills for Alex Fletcher.
Thanks, I'm sure there are a bunch more
Bino5 : 3/27/2009 2:24 am : link
I missed.
As Jerry says, they investiage everything
Dubs : 3/27/2009 2:27 am : link
They probably have eyes and ears in most places.

Off the top of my head...they were at Rutgers' Pro Day and had an individual workout with Kenny Britt.
Yeah they seem to be at a lot of the pro days
Bino5 : 3/27/2009 2:31 am : link
that are not highly attended, which is what I tried to focus on. It will be interesting to see how many, if any, players they draft or sign from these schools.
For sure
Dubs : 3/27/2009 2:33 am : link
I don't know how many teams were at Stanford and Rutgers but probably not as many as, say, USC. Still, not exactly small schools.

A smaller school whose Pro Day they attended...San Jose State. The Spartans still had about 20 teams there, though.
I believe Ramses Barden worked out at the San Jose State

pro day.
Did he?
Dubs : 3/27/2009 2:38 am : link
He must be doing a circuit...I know he's working out at USC's, and privately with Mark Sanchez.
Yeah I read yesterday Barden was there. The article mentioned
Bino5 : 3/27/2009 2:40 am : link
that John Fox and Rex Ryan were both there. Surprising San Jose State attracted 2 head coaches and 20 or so scouts.
Bino
Dubs : 3/27/2009 2:42 am : link
Lots of talent there this year. Gilbert is a possible first round pick, Francies is a possible second rounder, Owens is a nice late round CB, and then Barden was there.
Francies 40 was a little disappointing
Bino5 : 3/27/2009 2:44 am : link
but you're probably right that he'll go second round.
Late second to early fourth, somewhere in that range
Dubs : 3/27/2009 2:46 am : link
If he had kept it together at Oregon State he'd probably be a top 3 CB.
I'm off to bed

hopefully this thread keeps going tomorrow.
I think it would be easier to list the ones they didn't go to

it's gotten pretty big, and it's a cinch for the Giants since they just have to go down the Turnpike. Other teams had more people there though - the Jets had a HUGE entourage there.
Lots of prospects at Cincy besides Barwin
njm : 3/27/2009 8:51 am : link
You have 3 CBs that will go at different stages of the draft.
If we draft MAybin early I'll be furious, and I dont care
j_rud : 3/27/2009 8:53 am : link
what Reese's track record says. An average DE is not suddenly a 1st round talent at OLB simply because he looks the part in a pair of shorts. Maybin is simply not a good football player. I've seen nearly every game the kid has played in. He has bust written all over him.

The same goes for Derrick Williams. He's the most disappointing Penn State recruit in the past 20 years IMO. He was supposed to be what Percy Harvin ended up being, instead he was the exact same football player as a freshman that he was for a senior.

Its a bit of a strange scenario I guess, because obviously I dont think I know more than the team scouts, but at the same time I've seen these kids play-a lot-and I am positive that neither will be impact players as pros. I love Penn State, have since before I could remember, but they havent exactly been churning out top notch NFL players lately. The only ones I can think of who have even somewhat lived up to their billing in recent seasons is Posluszny and Levi Brown, and with Brown seemingly inable to wrest the starting LT job from Wayne Gandy you could even argue that he's been a disappointment for a 5th overall pick.

Summation: Penn State is for Saturdays, not for Sundays.
Wayne Gandy, Mike Gandy, whatever

I wonder if they were scouting Shaugnessy at Wisconsin,
Jim in Forest Hills : 3/27/2009 11:13 am : link
he'd make a nice pickup at DE on day 2.

I think Urbik is overrated.

Beckum would make a nice H Back in rd 4.
I think just about all of the big school pro days
Bino5 : 3/27/2009 11:25 am : link
are attended by all 32 teams. It's usually a matter of who attends(some just have scouts, others positions coaches, some coordinators or HC, and I know for Auburn and Alabama the Giants had coaches and director of scouting Marc Ross)
Some more interest/visit info

UConn DE Julius Williams was supposed to visit the Giants on Monday
Huskies strut their stuff for NFL scouts

We were watching ILB Daniel Holtzclaw closely at the EMU pro-day
Arrowhead Pride

We brought in Webber International (N.A.I.A) cornerback Vince Anderson for a workout (He’s a projected 7th/UDFA)Here’s his youtube highlights

We brought UVA WR Maurice Covington for a visit PFT

Northern Iowa DL Everette Pedescleaux had a visit set upDraft Daddy

Giants scout Jerry Shaw was at Nevada’s pro day checking out LB Josh Mauga, WR Marko Mitchell and commented on Jerome Johnson (brother of Jeremiah Johnson) who is converting from LB to FB for the NFL Ex-Nevada linebacker Johnson impresses NFL scouts

Giants showed interest in UGA CB Asher Allen at his pro day and worked him at the following day as well. scout.com

We were at Louisville’s pro day, probably checking out Mack Wood, 19 teammates show off for scouts
Holtzclaw is on the small side and didn't run a great 40
Bino5 : 3/27/2009 11:58 am : link
but his 3 cone of 6.86 is very impressive for a LB.

Presumably they were at UL-Laffayete looking at the WR Chery. He is a 7th round range special teams maven. Good returner that had 60 career tackles on special teams and improved as a WR this year. He has David Tyree written all over him.
I think we also had an individual workout with Mauga

I said they produce few impact players worthy of a first round selection. They churn out tons of marginal-to-average NFL players, but few impact guys you'd want to take at #29.

In an article I read a couple weeks ago, it was mentioned that most teams have 105 or 110 players on their draft boards. The Giants have over 300.
Quote:
Now the Cowboys rank players by round and by position. And like a lot of teams, the number of names on the board is limited. The Cowboys will end up with roughly 120 names when the evaluation process is done.

"Even that sounds a little high," Lombardi said. "Most of the time, it's 110, 105."

Other teams, such as the New York Giants, will have more than 300.

"We put a lot of names on the board although some names we wouldn't touch," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. "They earn a grade, so we put them on the board."

I'd take a flyer on Hill in the 7th rd. He does have good feet for a big guy, but he ran behind those big ugglies so you know his success is inflated. The kid behind him John Clay, now that's a RB I'd love on the Giants.
Wow good find jb
Bino5 : 3/27/2009 2:51 pm : link
I would say 300+ is over kill but obviously the results speak for themselves. I would think the Giants being so thorough as players enter the league helps them when it comes time for free agency and trades.
According to this

the Giants scout ran the South Florida DB's through drills. Safety Louis Gachette at 6'3" 212lbs ran a 4.5 forty and a 7.12 3 cone.

J.J. Pesavento, of NFLDraftBible.com, reports Colorado State QB Billy Farris measured a height of 6-foot-2 1/2 and a weight of 234 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.78 seconds and measured a 31-inch vertical jump. The New Orleans Saints, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Oakland Raiders, the St. Louis Rams, the Denver Broncos, the New York Giants, the Tennessee Titans, the San Francisco 49ers and the Carolina Panthers are showing interest in him.

Clay is going to be a great RB, he can gain yardage without a dominating OL. It remains to be seen whether the Badgers' OL will be pedestrian or above-average. Oglesby, Bscherer, Nagy, Carimi, and Moffitt have potential.

He hurt his stock by going back to school, but he's a legit No. 1 WR prospect who could be available in the third. Didn't have great numbers, although he caught very well at the Pro Day but it was crappy conditions.
Not a big surprise since they have a lot of prospects
