Barden One Handed Catch

TrueBlueMike : 8/8/2009 8:42 pm
Most of my pictures are really dark from the afternoon practice today...so it is going to take me awhile to get them edited.

I did want to post these though.

When I get back home I will post the best pictures from the entire week at their highest quality for everyone. It may take a little bit of time though.

are bigger than Hakeem's. Funny that not too many people talk about that. So what he may lack in some technique and speed, he has the physical tools to make up for it. Plus look at that body control... That's how Bball players go up for rebounds...
I don't care what anyone says, Burress never made - and never could
baadbill : 8/9/2009 10:56 am : link
make - that catch his entire life. Burress was tall, but he never jumped that high ever. I can't believe how far above the ground Barden was. That kid can jump (and great timing too).
The Giants won't be leading the NFL in dropped passes

anymore, I think.

Burress for all his amazing athletic talent
Peter from CT : 8/9/2009 11:11 am : link
was not a fundamentally correct football player. Barden is the anti-Burress in everything except his height.

Great catch and great pics.

Must be a nice camera to fire off in that succession. Great job.
Thats a good point
Bill2 : 8/9/2009 11:24 am : link
In the first picture his outstretched arms distorts the fact that in the second picture he is actually at a vertical higher point in his jump....his thigh pad is at the level of Woodsons head in the second picture.

He first touched it on the way up on a mis timed jump. Made it look tougher than it was by jumping higher than he needed to and mistiming it at that. Obviously an attention whore. Not a good sign for the future. Will want a new contract. Really not that impressive when you really look at it. Sort of like Megan Fox's thumbs. Pass.

Just another reality check which adds to all we have heard and seen at camp so far. We need a true Number One Reciever. Robbins is too big. Sintim is too small. The defense fights too much. The offense does not fight enough. Centers cannot snap the ball. Bomar had a bad pass on Tuesday. The coaches yelled at Woodson on Wednesday. Reese says Diehl is too big for guard which is where BBI insists he would play better. Obviously with a Obstructionist Super Bowl winning GM standing in the way of our recommendations we will need rnargi to organize a donation drive to fly a banner over the stadium this fall. We cannot let a ego maniac who does not put what is good for the team first get away with it. After all, we are built to win this year or never again. Eli throws too far for Moss...or he runs too slow for Eli. Kiwi hates Osi and will only be motivated if he is starting. This is bad because we will lose both of them. Sheridan clearly should be on the sidelines instead of the booth. Eli threw a bad pass in every year he has been here. Obviously we overpaid. Media is against us. Refs already have been calling interference on us and it is only training camp.

Doomed.
LOL

all of that and no Gilbride? hehehe
Those were some great photos!
ZogZerg : 8/9/2009 12:04 pm : link
Props to who took them.

I just don't see how a defense can stop a jump ball to barden by the goal line. If you throw the ball high either he catches it or it's incomplete. Between him and boss running in the endzone Eli has his pick.
I hope you don't mind...

I forgot about all of that side of things so let me try to add that paragraph to the analysis

No change to the playbook. Still throwing. TE all look the same. No clear number two behind Jacobs. Jacobs clearly resting on his laurels and more interested in accepting trophies instead of working out. TC yelling after the fighting means return to old ways and no free agents will ever sign with the NY Giants ever again. Kate Mara dissed by not being in all Entourage episodes...a clue to how we are disrepected by all media. Always. Francessa not yet broadcasting from Albany every day. No respect. Referees conspire to let Dallas win.

Guys held out of practice when injured, We never review the training staff. Giants Front office is cheap. Thats why our guys sit after injuries. If they had medical attention they could play right away. Proof of this is when Tuck said he still feels his Lis Franc. Ever hear any college players complaining about their Lis Franc's? Thats because its not a problem until you get to the Giants. Just saying.

Playbook still relies on the center snap. This demonstrates a lack of true creativity leaving the Giants behind in the always evolving NFL. The extra level of complexity we go through becasue of Gilbrides slavish devotion to the center snap (we practice it on every play. Think of how much time would be available for the simple routes that win if we were not so stuck on the same things that we did back in the 1920's)

Gilbrides and TC refusal to simplify the playbook by eliminating the center snap is what prevents us from winning the SB and makes all our plays take longer. Besides, the oppponent can tell how we start each play. Guy like Jimmy Johnson always held his defense back until after the snap...so they got extra rest by waiting. Meanwhile our DL was exhausted by the end of the year.

WTF is Tyree doing in there?

Doomed

that's not true...Burress made acrobatic catches regularly. His best may have been the one against the 49ers a few years ago...the amazing one-handed job he did.

baadbill : 8/9/2009 12:49 pm : link
I wasn't talking athletic grabs - I'm talking about leaping ability. I don't ever recall Burress' feet getting off the ground the way Barden is in those photos.

He didn't need to jump, they'll say. He got separation.

baadbill : 8/9/2009 1:02 pm : link
I hear ya... I guess what I was saying is simply that the vertical jump Barden shows is simply amazing. I mean not only is he tall, but factor in that vertical leap, and you have one very tall man.
FYI
crick78 : 8/9/2009 1:05 pm : link
Burress registered a 33inch vertical jump at the combine
Barden
crick78 : 8/9/2009 1:06 pm : link
registered 33.5 inch vertical at the combine.

and routinely makes leaping one-handed grabs. I think he dresses faster than many here think he will. And screw the "Canton" comments. A rookie playing very well is something to get excited about.

plans for this year, given the number of WRs we have on the team and the assumed learning curve for a lower division WR, no matter the talent.

I'm pumped. And if turns out that he catches five balls all year, it's not really a tragedy, either.
It was an awesome catch
JonC : 8/9/2009 2:09 pm : link
Most of the time when the ball hits his hands, there is NO sound, soft hands.
I posted it on
sharkly : 8/9/2009 2:38 pm : link
a Jets site said Clemens needed three of him to reach 50%.
Burress could high point the ball
KWALL : 8/9/2009 4:22 pm : link
He understands how to do that and he was very good catching above his head but his "high point" was never close to what Barden can bring.

Burress is a below avg leaper. Throughout his NFL career he wasn't consistently effective on fades.

Not only is Barden taller and longer but he jumps better.

He can probably get up a full foot higher than Burress.
I think he dresses faster than many here think he will.
Dylan fan : 8/9/2009 4:23 pm : link
Many BBIers will indeed bitch about anything! I missed where BBIers were complaining about how fast Barden dresses. Who cares, as long as he's able to get his uniform on B4 practices & games! :)

I also think he'll be active more often than Moss simply b/c he'll play on STs, whereas I doubt Moss will (assuming Moss even makes the team - seems he's been real inconsistent in practices so far).

crick78 : 8/9/2009 4:29 pm : link
According to the combine they both had similar verticle jump results. Is there something i am missing in reference to Barden being a better leaper?
What did Barden jump at combine?

I know Burress was around 29".

according to the numbers i have, Burress jumped 33, Barden jumped 33.5.

I had Burress at 29".

I looked it up after we signed him. When we signed him a few Steeler fans I know were ripping his red zone play and lack of jumping ability. So I looked it up. I was surprised it was 29".

I'll check my source on that.
Barden went to Cal Poly...
manh george : 8/9/2009 5:23 pm : link
with no significant strength coach or conditioning coach. I am pretty confident that he will get quicker, stronger, and increase his vertical leap over time.
For those that want to know

I took them with a Pentax K-7 with a 70-300mm zoom lens and a 1.4x extender at full zoom so about 420mm.

It is a Quantary Lens my parents got when they got their original dslr several years ago from Ritz Cameras. I think the camera was a Pentax ist and I bought that original equipment from them.

The lens can probably be considered a cheapo lens as I don't see many reviews of quantary lenses at all. I have always been able to get some decent shots out of it though.
where in the world
blakjedi : 8/12/2009 1:38 pm : link
would that pass have gone if Barden didnt act like he was 13 feet tall? being out of reach is one thing, but that pass was just way too high...

David in LA : 8/12/2009 1:49 pm : link
isn't the point to use Barden's size if he has the mismatch? It's not like it was a 13' high pass to Moss or Manningham.
i understand using the mismatch
blakjedi : 8/12/2009 1:58 pm : link
but wind or a bump by the DB could change the outcome of that pass very easily... im just saying

BigWinner810 : 8/12/2009 1:59 pm : link
what is this, Braveheart? Can he shoot thunderbolts from his arse?

It's an incredible catch, but he's not 4 feet above the port-a-john, nor is he 12 feet in the air.

Can we ease up on the hyperbole just a bit?

You can make out Barden's lower leg from the kneecap-down between the guy in the red shirt's arm. If you try to use that to extrapolate how far he is off the ground, I'd guess he's no more than two feet off the ground.

Someone said that the guy has a 33.5" vertical at a combine wearing shorts and jumping off turf. Here he has cleats on, on grass, jumping with pads and a helmet, while focusing more on timing the jump rather than getting as high as possible.

Again, amazing catch, but some of the exaggeration here is too funny.
Now that is something I'd like to see
Dubs : 8/12/2009 1:59 pm : link
Moss bringing in a 13 foot pass. His feet would be above Woodson's head.
