OK...I Honestly Don't Know Much About This Saints Defense

AD-Blaze : 10/13/2009 3:56 pm
This is one team that I know always succeeded on the offensive side of the ball, and never knew much about the Defense of this team. I do know that Eli's boogey man Darren Sharper is now a Saint, Vilma has been solid since coming to New Orleans from the Jets, Fujita has been a mainstay on the strongside at LB, Will Smith is still a solid D-End but nothing like he was a few years back. Other than that am I missing anything other than Roman Harper at Safety with Sharper? I know they are a pretty solid unit, but is this a Defense that we is definitely going to give us a headache or is this a defense we should expect to have very few problems with on Sunday?
I have to wonder...
CRinCA : 10/13/2009 3:59 pm : link
How much of the Darren Sharper affect was due to "certain receivers" running incorrect/bad routes.

I actually have alot of faith in our boy Eli for this game, given how him and the current receivers appear to be on the same page. (Fingers crossed)
I think

we can do a good job against their defense. My biggest concern is how we match up and play against their offense. How will their offense do? Who covers Shockey? AP? Do we stick to our man coverage against their WRs? Just a lot of questions I have on how our defense matches up against their offense.

Im in the same boat as you AD. I only see the offensive highlights from New Orleans and know only a handful of defensive guys on their team.

Vilma, Fujita, Sharper, Smith and Grant are the names I know
I know

Sharper is a notorious Eli killer (and anyone who didn't has certainly heard about it this week) but does anyone have the exactnumbers? I remember him taking a few pick 6's back on us, but how many picks in how many games? TDs? Passes Defensed? Anyone know?
You talk about a guy that is underrated...

Darren Sharper. Amazing he is still doing it at 33. 5 picks already this season.
they appear to be good against the run and
grhein8008 : 10/13/2009 4:16 pm : link
has numerous turnovers against the pass. i personally believe the numbers are a little inflated due to the offense jumping up big quickly causeing the opponents to play catch up and abandoning the run (average like 22 attempts per game). that makes them one dimensional and much easier to defend.
This may be pure speculation

but I feel like we can run all over these guys. They dont have any big guys up the middle. I know Greg Williams has improved the defense, but who have they shut down so far?

I mean the Bills and Jets offenses are nothing to write home about and they got up big against the Eagles and Lions to force them to be strictly passing teams.

I may be in the minority, but i just dont feel that their defense is all that good.

Williams is an aggressive coordinator, but there is talent in the Saints front seven.

Sedrick Ellis, Will Smith, Charles Grant, Bobby McCray, Jonathan Vilma... the back seven can be hit, and even Kevin Kolb had 300-yards passing.

Look at the QB's they have faced thus far:

Week 1 - Matt Stafford's first NFL pro game
Week 2 - Kevin Kolb, a backup
Week 3 - Trent Edwards, fairly explanatory
Week 4 - Mark Sanchez, fourth NFL start

Eli will give them a credible QB to face, and after the Giants, they got to travel to Miami to face the Phins and then vs. Atlanta.

Saints are a good team, and with the horrible division flopping before our very eyes, they'll make the post-season barring a Brees' injury. I suspect their offense will be similar to how Cincinnati attacked the Giants defense last season. Three step drops and slants.

Offensively for NY, I hope Bradshaw is still OK and they balance it out, as they have been this season. If they don't turn the ball over, Giants should be able to win.
Interesting to note that
Bobby Epps : 10/13/2009 4:56 pm : link
the Saints are giving up 303 passing yards per game.

Why run when a QB like Matt Schaub can throw for over 300 yards?
Matt Schaub is not a bad Qb
boyzinblue : 10/13/2009 4:59 pm : link
I would have understood if you said Jamarcus Russel, but you're definitely reaching here.

Schaub is not a bad QB but IMO he's no Eli.

Said another way, if Schaub can throw for over 300 yards, what could Eli do?
Eli
Toth029 : 10/13/2009 5:05 pm : link
Doesn't have Andre Johnson.
definitely agree
boyzinblue : 10/13/2009 5:05 pm : link
there Epps.
Williams has done an excellent job.
Thomas : 10/13/2009 5:06 pm : link
He's taken them from a bad D to a top 10 D immediately. Grant/Smith/McCray is an excellent 3-man rotation at DE and Ellis and Clancy inside is effective.

Vilma is playing at a Pro Bowl level at MLB. And Scott Shanle an underrated player at WLB.

And they have 4 good CBs - with various skillsets - they can play "match up" with better than most teams.

Of course, the 2 good S's.

Really, they are solid at all 3 levels. One of the top 3rd down defenses in the NFL, allowing only 28%. Always been Gregg Williams' money down.
Saint defense will be exposed by our offense this game
SGMen : 10/13/2009 8:09 pm : link
Our veteran OL will control the line of scrimmage and our wideouts will win us this game as Eli will consistently find them open against these DB's.

Our DL is also the league's best and will do enough to contain their run game to win this game. Brees will get hit a lot if he does more then 3 step drops. CB Webster will smother Colston and Tuck will take care of Brees.
Tracy Porter
Will Allen/Peterson : 10/13/2009 8:13 pm : link
Is a talented 2nd year player starting at CB for the Saints and he has played very well. He looked terrific last year before sustaining a season ending injury but he earned a starting spot in camp and has performed admirably.
It will be interesting to compare Tracy Porter's career...
Milton : 10/13/2009 8:31 pm : link
...with Terrell Thomas's and Clint Sintim's. At least for me it will be. I may be the only one who pays attention to these things, but had Reese accepted the Saints pre-2008 draft offer of a 2 and a 5 for Shockey, the Giants would've been in position to draft Tracy Porter (whom the Saints drafted with the pick). Instead they used the last pick of the second round to take another CB Terrell Thomas. And after accepting the same offer from the Saints two months too late for the 2008 draft, they used that second round pick on Sintim.

The thought of AP covering Shockey should scare the bajeebus out of any true Giant fan. Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to that.
I think the Giants match up well against the Saints pass offense...

We have big corners who have more trouble with the smaller, quicker WR's than they do with the Colston-types. Lance Moore concerns me the most.

I think the Giants will win big and people will read into it more than they should. It will appear like there is this big gap between the Giants and the rest of the NFC and it's really only a small gap.

Toth029 : 10/14/2009 5:57 am : link
Moore has had shoulder issues. Unsure if he's really 100%.
The only team that can beat the Giants most weeks is the Giants...
x meadowlander : 10/14/2009 6:08 am : link
...this week is no exception. Giants can keep pace if it turns into a shootout with Brees, and have a serious advantage with a much better defense.

Really, the first game that concerns me is in Philly in 2 weeks.
