Eli Manning and John Elway - Parallel Beginnings

mikewaldwick : 11/25/2009 7:15 pm
Eli Manning and John Elway’s NFL careers began the exact same way. After 88 starts you’ll see their stats are very similar as well.

Even though, in my opinion, today’s QB, in general, has become more of a dink and dunk position (resulting in higher passer ratings), as we saw on Sunday, Eli’s style of down-the-field passing is similar to when Elway played.

What I found very interesting is that the Giants and Broncos were LAST PLACE teams the year before Eli and Elway were drafted. Two years later, after their first full season, both the Giants and Broncos were FIRST PLACE teams.

Two years ago this comparison may have been slightly insulting to John Elway fans but Eli is definitely closing the gap with his play over the last couple years.

record was 13-3
A little unfair

Eli has had a better running game and WRs then Elway had in his first few years.

If Eli turns into 1/2 the QB Elway was over his career, it's all good for Giants fans. Not that he's chopped liver now, but comparing him to Elway wouldn't happen outside of BBI.
When people say "John Elway"

I think 'clutch'. 15 years from now when people say Eli Manning, I'll think 'clutch'. Both are. Some guys have it, some don't. I think it's the defining characteristic of an athlete: can he do it when the game is on the line.

Eli has proven again and again he's got ice water running his veins. That's why I laugh when people bitch about him, say he's overpaid and overrated.
How 'bout that...

That's real interesting to see the comparison side by side like this. Thanks a lot for posting these.
Pork Chop...Before Eli was the starting QB...

the Giants rushing game averaged:
2000: 4.0 yards
2001: 4.2 yards
2002: 3.9 yards
2003: 4.0 yards
Since Eli took over:
2004: 4.5 yards
2005: 4.7 yards
2006: 4.7 yards
2007: 4.6 yards
2008: 5.0 yards

We are just finding out this year that, all along, Eli has been calling audibles himself, switching to running plays based on what he sees in the defensive alignment. Being a Manning you know this guy is studying night and day.

I do agree that the Giants have had better backs than the Broncos (until Terrell Davis came along in 1995) but, because the coaches are now publicly recognizing Eli as a big part of the Giant's rushing success you can't argue that he has contributed to the Giants improvement in their running game, especially after looking looking at the numbers above.

Good comparison

Let's not minimize the one big advantage Elway had over Eli and that is his legs
Eli's starting to develop some nice wheels though, no Bruce?

.
Good point Big Blue but..
mikewaldwick : 11/25/2009 8:25 pm : link
with all of these head injuries we don't need Eli running any more than he is
Guys
Big Blue '56 : 11/25/2009 8:27 pm : link
I'm glad he runs as little as he does..Elway and Kelly were built like LBs(in their day)
LOL

I don't know about you, but anytime I see Eli make the slightest indication he's going to run with the football I get nervous. really nervous that either he'll fumble or get hurt. he does not inspire confidence when he runs with the ball.

Neither he nor Peyton are ever going to be considered mobile.

I think a naked bootleg at the goal line would probably result in Eli walking in to the end zone.
sorry fiddy

should have added the *grin*
As Namath did in 1974
Big Blue '56 : 11/25/2009 8:29 pm : link
when he stunned all of us with a NB into the EZ in OT(?)
exactly
pjcas18 : 11/25/2009 8:31 pm : link
didn't Namath limp into the end zone.

Peyton did a naked bootleg and was un-touched against the Ravens a couple years ago.

Eli's first five compare favorably

to almost any HOF QB. His record kills Phil Simms who is a marginal HOFer. Everyone on offense performs his best with him calling the signals. Talking about wins and losses and offensive efficiency and not QBR.
Big Blue, not only the legs, but arm strenght as well,
barens : 11/25/2009 10:58 pm : link
and that's not meant to be a knock on Eli.
barens i agree about Elway's arm strength..
mikewaldwick : 11/25/2009 11:37 pm : link
but if the Atlanta game is an indication of the accuracy and touch of Eli's passes when he actually practices with his receivers (unlike Burress and Shockey) there's no need for a rocket arm.

At least Elway was a smart powerful passer compared to guys like JaMarcus Russell and Jay Cutler. It's getting old hearing about Jay Cutlers outstanding talent just because he's got a great arm.
Sharkly..i totally agree
