1/27 Senior Bowl Practice Day 3 Rumblings

Nasif08 : 1/27/2010 10:42 am
Today's chatter from Twitter (movethesticks)/Rotoworld

Quote:
Idaho OG most likely pro bowler if you took a poll of scouts at Sr Bowl. Rare size, strength and quickness. Sticks out like a sore thumb

Obviously referring to Iupati

Quote:
Dan Williams will end up going in top 20. Too big, strong and active. Cody likely out of 1st rd. Might be a 1 down player, no stamina

One of the first early risers before the Combine?

Quote:
Lots of teams have questions about Taylor Mays ability to play in the deep half. He's late off the hash too much. No anticipation.

Quote:
SI.com's Tony Pauline reports that USC S Taylor Mays has appeared stiff in the hips on the Senior Bowl practice field and may force teams to begin projecting him as an outside linebacker.
Pauline isn't the only one saying it. NFL Network's Mike Mayock noted that Mays has struggled in man-coverage work, and he was easily beaten off the line of scrimmage by Florida WR Riley Cooper in one drill we saw. At 6'3/231, Mays looks more like a "Will" linebacker than a safety. His stock is slipping.

Daily Taylor Mays Update ;)

Quote:
Javier Arenas is a feisty, competetive nickel type but deep speed is a ?

Was very intrigued with Arenas in the 2nd Round, liked what I saw in College, but pro scouts are questioning his speed which im surprised as he seemed to have "game quickness"

Quote:
McCluster is dynamic. None of the South CBs could get a hand on him off the line. Like him better as a slot WR than a RB.

Quote:
Ole Miss RB/WR Dexter McCluster is reportedly drawing comparisons to the Jets' Leon Washington from NFL personnel at the Senior Bowl.
The connection is obvious because of McCluster's versatility. He caught 130 career passes for the run-first Rebels and graduated second in school history in all-purpose yards, behind only Deuce McAllister. McCluster was used sparingly on returns, but certainly has the skill set to be an impact NFL player there. He may be the hottest prospect at this week's Senior Bowl.

Really think this kid is gonna be a playmaker in the next level.

Quote:
Tebow threw it okay when he had a lot of room. However, when bodies close in, he can't get the ball out. Motion is WAY too long.

Wonder if the rumors of Jax/NE liking him so much are really true?

Quote:
By the way, they must have a heck of a workout program at Oxford because Myron Rolle was the most impressive physique BY FAR

Funny stuff but some smart team in the mid rounds is gonna roll the dice on this kid and eventually it will pay off tremendously IMO.

Quote:
Alabama NT Terrence Cody said Tuesday that he plans to shed 30 pounds and get to 340 before his rookie season in the NFL.
If he's serious about shedding fat, Cody's weigh-in at next month's Combine will be telling. He could really damage his stock by reporting heavier. Cody's 370-pound Senior Bowl measurement was 21 more than his weigh-in prior to Alabama's 2009 season and 15 greater than he weighed 16 days ago.

Daily Terrence Cody weight status

Quote:
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum had high praise for Boise State CB Kyle Wilson in an interview at the Senior Bowl Tuesday.
Wilson was a standout punt returner while doubling as a four-year starter for the Broncos. He also returned two of his senior-year interceptions for touchdowns. The more jobs you can do (the better)," Tannenbaum said. "I think he certainly will play for a long time, and he has good ball skills."

Feel free to add/update to this as the day rolls along.

Go Terps : 1/27/2010 10:54 am : link
has Ravens written all over him.

We've gotta take Iupati, put him at LG, and forget the position until we're looking for Eli's replacement.
Gotta say I am falling in love with the idea of
BlueHurricane : 1/27/2010 11:02 am : link
Diehl/Iupati/O'Hara/Snee/Beatty or Kareem

With either Kareem or Beatty on the bench and Seubert as a depth player.

That line would be dirty and would bring our run game back to the forefront.
Regarding Iapati,
barens : 1/27/2010 11:03 am : link
what hasn't been mentioned is that scouts are concerned that he didn't play in a three point stance at Idaho, and they're not sure what kind of player he is on the move.

The latter seems to be an important attribute to the Giants.
a 1 down player
pjcas18 : 1/27/2010 11:04 am : link
Ha ha that's awesome.
barens
Go Terps : 1/27/2010 11:06 am : link
If that's the case, the Giants should alter their running game to suit Iupati's strengths and select him anyway. Barring injury the odds are very strong that he'll be a Pro Bowler and about 50-50 that he'll make All-Pro.

You draft those kinds of people and fit the scheme to them.
Say what you want about Cody, but offensive linemen simply
barens : 1/27/2010 11:06 am : link
can't move him. He is a bonafide football player.
Go Terps, you mean
barens : 1/27/2010 11:13 am : link
less pulling, and more road grading? I don't know, he does seem like such a unique type of lineman...

I'm sure the combine will be very telling for a player like Iupati.

OT/OG John Jerry has also been impressive so far, and he does seem a bit more seasoned.

Figgy2989 : 1/27/2010 11:16 am : link
Bonafide NT that can only play one down at a time, his stock will drop even further if he comes into the combines not having lost any weight.
It's one thing to be big and still be athletic
GMen131 : 1/27/2010 11:18 am : link
like Dan Williams (6'3 330lbs) but it's a whole other issue if you're just big and sloppy w/ zero stamina like Mt. Cody. Give me a guy like Williams who might be 30 lbs lighter but is significantly more athletic anyday over big Mt Cody.
WOW...
Dnew : 1/27/2010 11:19 am : link
Cody put on 15 pounds in 16 days...that's actually impressive when you all ready weigh over 300 pounds! That's alot of Twinkies while watching TV!
Figgy,
barens : 1/27/2010 11:20 am : link
don't believe everything you read. He managed quite well at Alabama.
Brandon Ghee
Will Allen/Peterson : 1/27/2010 11:27 am : link
Appears to be having a bounce back day today, Devin McCourty not so much...

Quote:
Lions coaches are all over CB Devin McCourty for not looking back at the ball on a go route. Later, he's beaten badly at the line of scrimmage. The best cornerback so far may be Brandon Ghee.
McCluster is 165 lbs
GiantsLaw : 1/27/2010 11:28 am : link
that's small.
barens
Figgy2989 : 1/27/2010 11:31 am : link
Don't have to believe it, saw it in the SEC title game and the BCS championship, he would play two snaps and be out of gas and have to come to the sideline.
Updates
Will Allen/Peterson : 1/27/2010 11:39 am : link
Quote:
Jacoby Ford is clearly the best WR early in the morning session. His speed is obvious and he's finding all the right creases in the defenses.

He's going to threaten Chris Johnson's Combine record in the 40 yard dash, I'm eager to see how fast he times since he reportedly ran in the mid 4.1's in 2005 (not an electronic time).

Quote:
Arkansas State DE Alex Carrington just bull-rushed Arizona State guard Shawn Laveao to the ground during linemen drills. The small-school defensive lineman may be set to move up the draft boards at DE.

Quote:
Nebraska S Larry Asante teed off on Wisconsin TE Garrett Graham on a deep slant, knocking the ball loose. Graham did well to pop right up.

Quote:
He was looking good so far, but Wake Forest CB Brandon Ghee just dropped a potential interception on an errant Tony Pike pass. Pike continues his inaccurate ways. He over threw 6-4 Danario Alexander on an easy slant route.
For Cody...
Russel in VA : 1/27/2010 11:39 am : link
it's less what it says about physique than what it says about effort. He's a guy who shed a lot of weight to play this season, to gain that back when there are literally millions at stake calls into question his head or his heart.
Ford is fast as hell (see video of him passing Spiller like nothing)
chris r : 1/27/2010 11:40 am : link
but I've heard people question his lateral quickness, which is not encouraging for a small guy.
All this Cody
Thomas : 1/27/2010 11:49 am : link
weight bashing is stupid. Like any of the 34 teams give a shit that he's fat and 370. That's a good thing. He's still going 1st round, IMO.

Missouri LB Sean Witherspoon is wound up this morning and having fun. He's talking it up after plays and just let out a load and enthusiastic "Whoo!" that left the crowd laughing. Teams are going to love the enthusiasm that he packages with his skill set.

Quote:
The North Team just started special teams practice. Mardy Gilyard and Jacoby Ford are back returning punts. The punting itself, though, remains shaky at best. Between Michigan's Zoltan Mesko and Matt Dodge of ECU, the bad kicks outnumber the good, two-to-one. Mesko is kicking now and just hit two good ones... but that was preceeded by three clunkers.

Quote:
Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount and Fresno State RB Lonyae Miller look impressive during 11-on-11 drills. For a guy who weighs 245, Blount gets to the hole in a hurry. Shortly after some impressive runs, however, Blount coughs up the football.

i have some clemson friends and they have friends on the track team and told me that he ran an unwind aided 4.18 40....indy usually is a slower track or the way the nfl tracks the time seems slower but if he runs a 4.18 or 4.25ish range that will be insane
You guys can break down this stuff far better than I
Randy in CT : 1/27/2010 11:53 am : link
however, I find it laughable that a player's stock rises or falls because he got beat on a play at the Senior Bowl.

Between this game and the combine, they are going to serve people in doubting what they saw of these players on the field which will lead to the inevitable "surprise" picks on draft days which aren't a surprise at all really.
DC
Will Allen/Peterson : 1/27/2010 11:55 am : link
I wouldn't be surprised if he runs in the low 4.2's, if he were to run in the high 4.1's in Indy it would surely be an astonishing accomplishment. He appeared to be in the 4th-5th round area coming into this week and while I expected him to blow scouts away in the workouts, I didn't expect him to impress as much as he has at the Senior Bowl practices. Some are saying he's been the most impressive WR from the South team that features more highly touted guys like Gilyard & Alexander.

He's sure to rise up the boards with his workouts so he's doing a nice job of generating some momentum for himself.
no one wants Iupati more than me
santacruzom : 1/27/2010 11:56 am : link
but I still get the feeling he'll actually even be taken before us, most probably by the 9'ers.

A guard taken before our 15th pick? Could happen.
Randy
Will Allen/Peterson : 1/27/2010 11:58 am : link
I hear what you're saying but I don't think a prospect's stock is affected all that much by just one play or a series of plays. I think it is affected more so by their overall performance throughout the week, how they respond to NFL coaching and if they are able to make improvements in certain areas as the week progresses.

Nebraska LB Phillip Dillard disguised a blitz nicely and came through untouched for a touch sack. Sean Canfield is having his best day at QB and showing good touch downfield. Penn State DT Jared Odrick is having a good day. He just beat his man and easily got to QB Sean Canfield for a touch sack, and earlier had shed a blog to make a play on a draw.

Quote:
QB Dan LeFevour made a bad decision on a covered screen pass and LB Daryl Washington got an easy pick six.
i agree W A/P
DCPollaro : 1/27/2010 12:00 pm : link
i can see him as a rd 3 guy...he is small though 5'9ish

also too bad for him that he was on the same team as spiller or he would have been the primary return guy
If a fair bit of the hype on Iupati is true
80offensive : 1/27/2010 12:10 pm : link
he should be able to play almost anywhere on the OL (i.e., tackle if given time to adjust). Anyone know any particular reason he played LG in college? A scheme thing, or to take advantage of his run blocking skills?

I'd be a bit wary of taking a G at 15, as we already have 1 pro bowl G. If he can play tackle, it's fairly possible he goes before 15 anyway. Thats less likely if he projects as a true G.
Mays
PeterS : 1/27/2010 12:19 pm : link
I've been suggesting his move to OLB ala Thomas Jones for over a year at least.

Thomas Howard?
Russel in VA : 1/27/2010 12:28 pm : link
Mays might be able to pull it off, but its tough to spend a first on a project. Not at 15.
I think he meant
Will Allen/Peterson : 1/27/2010 12:33 pm : link
Thomas Davis. Plenty of people have hinted at the possibility for quite awhile.
IMO Mays CAN succeed in a Troy Polomalu
DCPollaro : 1/27/2010 12:34 pm : link
type of role...closer to the line...romaing around blitzing from all over and dropping some into coverage

W A/p what do you think?
Blount doesn't cough up the ball
santacruzom : 1/27/2010 12:36 pm : link
He just intentionally drops it so that he can have both punchin' fists immediately at the ready.
More on Mays & Rolle...
Nasif08 : 1/27/2010 12:37 pm : link
Quote:
Florida State safety Myron Rolle made a couple of real impressive hits in pass coverage and showed better hip flipping ability and footwork than most people thought he had. He’s not the physical specimen that Taylor Mays is (nobody compares to Mays), but Rolle fills out his pads nicely and seems very fluid athletically for a rocked-up body that took the last year off to study at Oxford.

Speaking of Mays, it seems people are finally coming around to my long-held position that he’s not anywhere close to an elite prospect. He looked incredibly stiff and almost comes to a dead stop coming out of his backpedal and cannot change direction once he’s beyond his second step without looping wide. A couple of sage voices in the crowd wondered aloud why he isn’t playing linebacker--one of whom has assembled a Super Bowl-winning team.
What players Team are talking to at the Senior Bowl...
Nasif08 : 1/27/2010 12:38 pm : link
Quote:

Seattle was talking with John Jerry and Mike Johnson, both interior offensive linemen.

Cleveland swarmed South Florida safety Nate Allen, who had a nice practice.

Jacksonville, Oakland, and Baltimore all talked to Alabama CB Javier Arenas.

Buffalo and Denver quickly isolated Alabama TE Colin Peek.

The Jets--who canned some coaches yesterday--met with Dekoda Watson, Myron Rolle, and Patrick Robinson, all from Florida State. A couple of their staffers spent a good portion of practice talking to Bobby Bowden, who is much shorter in person than I anticipated.

Tennessee talked to Georgia DT Geno Atkins and South Florida DE George Selvie, though the latter seemed like a case of old friends catching up.
DC
Will Allen/Peterson : 1/27/2010 12:38 pm : link
I see him more in a Bob Sanders/Adrian Wilson type of role than a Polamalu role. Polamalu is much better than Mays out in space where he can use his instincts and lateral agility to roam around and make plays. Both Sanders & Wilson are used predominantly closer to the line of scrimmage where they are allowed to play downhill more often than not, which is where Mays would excel.
On Cody & his future...
Nasif08 : 1/27/2010 12:39 pm : link
Quote:
Alabama DT Terrence Cody is one big man, and not in a good way. He weighs in at 370 but “looks every cheeseburger of 400” as one NFC South coach joked. He did very little to dispel the notion that he is nothing but a 2-down middle of the line clogger, showing little burst and seeming content to just occupy blockers. His lack of flexibility and mobility was highly evident as the team stretched together. I had previously compared him to both Shaun Rogers and Ted Washington, but Cody is not nearly as quick with his hands or as agile as either of those two.

Figgy,
barens : 1/27/2010 12:40 pm : link
I watched those games and others as well, and my take, which may be obvious from the start, is that he's not meant to be a pass rusher, and came out of the game on obvious passing downs.

Against Florida and Texas, I think he altered those games alone by making both teams 1 dimensional.

And I gotta tell you, every player seems gassed after a couple of plays, but I think it's an awful assumption to think Cody took himself out of these games, mind you after 1 play, and assume it was because he was gassed.

He wasn't gassed enough to give a full effort by blocking a field goal against Tennesse to win the game, that's for sure.
thanks Will

Sean Weatherspoon........
Simms11 : 1/27/2010 12:43 pm : link
The more I hear about this guy the more I like the proposition of the Giants taking him. Will he be there in the second round for us? Probably not without trading up in the round. He brings a level of athleticism and enthusiasm that is needed on the Giants LBing corps and back 7.
Reading about Weatherspoon
Nasif08 : 1/27/2010 12:45 pm : link
he seems like an ideal leader that our defense is sorely lacking
DC
FuegoKidd : 1/27/2010 12:49 pm : link
Polamalu can literally play anywhere as a safety, Mays might be stuck just at the line... Don't forget Polamalu will do crazy shit like line up ready for bump and run coverage on the TE when really they are in Cover 3 zone blitz and he somehow gets back to defend the deep middle.

Hopefully for Mays he ends up like Thomas Davis and not USC alum Darnell Bing who I thought had a lot of potential!
I like Mayock alot
Dave M : 1/27/2010 12:53 pm : link
He blows away most draft analysts but I remember him really harping on how Kiwanuka got dominated by Fuergeson during senior day practice and I think Kiwi is doing just fine.
I'm going to put the eyball on Mays this afternoon
Sy'56 : 1/27/2010 12:57 pm : link
I didn't see as much of him as I wanted to, focused on some other guys. I'll be sure to get plenty of notes down on him and put them in my south report tonight.
Dave
FuegoKidd : 1/27/2010 12:57 pm : link
that could also mean that Kiwi took that week personal, and that Mayock was right to question him but Kiwi acted like a professional athelte, took it personal and decided he was going to kick some ASS.

Kiwi is easily my favorite defensive player on the Giant. When the season was practically over I stopped watching the whole screen and just watched the difference between Kiwi and Osi at the RE position... it was like watching Varsity one snap with Kiwi then JV the next snap with Osi
In fairness to Mayock and Kiwi,

Fuergeson turned out to be a heck of a left tackle.
Where is Rolle projected to go?

the Giants should alter their running game to suit Iupati

Is this a serious statement?

You really need to calm down.

Dumb question
lawguy9801 : 1/27/2010 1:47 pm : link
If Iupati is such a specimen (and he apparently is), how did he end up at Idaho? Bad grades? Discipline problems? Or just a late bloomer?
Everything your read about Weatherspoon
Figgy2989 : 1/27/2010 2:11 pm : link
says how vocal he is and a lot of people applaud his ability to manage the game on the defensive side of the ball. Basically saying is an AP type player who is more athletic.
I really

want us to pick up Myron Rolle, i dont care if we have to move around to get him in the third or fourth round, I think this guys is going to be a star.
