The Giants have emerged with the first victory at the New Meadowlands Stadium they are building as 50-50 partners with the Jets. They have won the honor of hosting the first regular season game in September, the Daily News has learned.

Pick either the Cowboys or Eagles or make it the Colts or Saints.

The Giants would have to open on the road for them to play the Saints or Colts b/c those two will be playing each other to open up the season, right?
LOL
ZogZerg : 3/15/2010 12:11 pm : link
Obviously the NFL never tossed a coin and wanted the Giants to open up at home in their new stadium.

It looks like the Jets will be second fiddle in this stadium as well.
Good

MetsAreBack : 3/15/2010 12:27 pm : link
if its the Jets, they dont allow their fans to drink on home night games anyway, so i doubt their fans even want this.

And I dont believe in this showing balls stuff - I am fine playing the Lions on opening day and getting the season started right.

But the Bears would be a fun opening game too.

The Jets got to close GIANTS STADIUM. It had our name on it and they got to close it. A stadium they didn't move into until 8 years after it opened because they couldn't strike a deal with Shea Stadium. I repeat, they couldn't make a deal to stay in Shea. Mind you, they're playing in the new stadium because they couldn't strike a deal to open a stadium of their own. And they got the fuckin' nerve--still--to feel like they have the right to open this one? Fuck the Jets!! And besides, it's not like they still couldn't play their first game at home by opening MNF.
It's Luca Brasi.

Given how the Giants played in their last Giants Stadium game....
Greg from LI : 3/15/2010 2:02 pm : link
....I'm just as happy that they didn't close the place.
Here's why it had to be a coin toss:
Marty in Albany : 3/15/2010 2:04 pm : link
If the decision were made merely on historical grounds, the Giant would go first for all the reasons that have previously been mentioned. However, since the debut of the new stadium will be a financial windfall to the team that opens the stadium, and since the Giants and the Jets are equal partners, it had to be a coin toss.

Of course my preference would be to give it to the winner of a 40 yard sprint between the Coughlin and Rex Ryan.
Hard to believe

Come on... someone had to have reported how this all played out... When were the teams notified?

If neither team was, & the league just "decided" heads & tails here... I refuse to believe that.
I mean just come out & announce they are giving the game to the Giants. Don't make it a farce open to embarrassing criticism.

I just want to hear both teams were notified or invited!

Did the Jets have a nice run in the playoffs, absolutely, but my question is, what have they done that they "deserve" the right to have the first game?

one fan made the point that fox has the doubleheader for the first week, so it is likely that the game is the late game and be the game of the week so that it will have a national audience. By having it the late game they will have some ability at the end to show how the stadium lights up in blue.

I doubting their needed to be a coin toss if they had the Sunday afternoon-Monday night game planned already. Giants given the choice would prefer Sunday Afternoon, while Jets prefer the Monday Night game. ( I prefer the day game).

Comment from Woody:

Quote:
via @NYPost_NFL

Nice smackdown of the #NFL from #Jets owner Woody Johnson over Coin-Flip Gate: "An NFL coin toss has a few fundamental elements that are missing here, most notably the presence of the teams involved. That's how it's always done in the League whether it’s determining the order of the draft or deciding who’s going to kick off the game. When the issue of which team would be hosting the first regular season game could not be resolved on the merits, I suggested a coin toss as the fairest way to resolve this issue. The League rejected that idea.
Then, I was told Friday that a coin toss took place at the League office and the Jets lost. We rejected a process in which neither team was present. The League departed from our time-honored tradition and declined the opportunity to set the matter straight with a transparent process." Wow.

And it seems that fans (of all teams, not just the jets) forget that the NFL is not about being fair. The NFL is a privately owned business with the intent of making shit tons of money.

I have no idea where people get the idea that the NFL has to be fair about stuff like this. They don't. They can do what they want, and if you don't like it...you are welcome to watch something else and spend your money elsewhere.
