Steve Smith - 2009 Hope D Johnson BBI Giant of the Year

rnargi : 4/5/2010 4:10 pm
Congratulations to Steve Smith, BBI Giant of the Year!

First, Eric, Gary, Tim (nittmo), and I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported this effort. This year came down to two candidates and the result was in doubt all week.

In the end, however, wide receiver Steve Smith edged out quarterback Eli Manning to win the award. Of a total of 787 votes cast by registered and confirmed members of the site, Smith received 389 votes and Manning received 330 votes. Others receiving votes were Terrell Thomas (17), Kevin Boss (16); Tom Coughlin (12); Hakeem Nicks (6); David Diehl (6); Chris Snee (5); Shaun O’Hara (3); and Mathias Kiwanuka (3).

Steve has reached out to BBI and provided a statement that I want to share here:

“In our game, individual recognition is the result of teamwork. I am humbled that BBI has chosen me as its Giant of the Year, but I wouldn’t even be a candidate if it weren’t for our entire offense, especially Eli. So I am thankful, and I am honored to be the first recipient after the award has been re-named in the memory of Hope, whose spirit and passion for the Giants embodied what being a Giants fan and being a member of BBI is all about. Hope was a great ambassador for the Giants, and it’s fitting this award should be in her name.”

Again, thank you to Gary for setting up the poll and keeping this years' vote to registered and verified members of the Corner Forum; to Tim for coordinating with the Giants throughout, and to Eric because it's his site and I have to thank him (grin!)

Most of all, thanks to all of you.
Well deserved

Anywho congrats to SS
Big Blue '56 : 4/5/2010 4:24 pm : link
But Eli was clearly the MVP and it wasn't even close, imho..SS 107 catches, MM 57(?) Nicks a terrific rookie year..Common denominator? Duh

words came from Steve's mouth, pen, paper, or computer. That was written by the giants PR staff.

A tremendous year by Smith and particularly amazing in the context of an otherwise disastrous season - if it weren't for him we'd have had to take a year off from awarding the trophy or otherwise dilute the significance of it.
Common denominator? Coach Sullivan

JOrthman : 4/5/2010 4:42 pm : link
Boss and TC?
I voted for Coughlin
Sneakers O'toole : 4/5/2010 4:43 pm : link
because he held the team together, we didn't see all of the backbiting and infighting in the media that we have seen at times in the past when things go wrong. The team stayed on message. Sometimes you learn more about the quality of your head coach in the bad years.
I knew it would not be a popular pick here too :)
Sneakers O'toole : 4/5/2010 4:44 pm : link
not after this season
Coughlin held the team together?
wewonsbxlii : 4/5/2010 4:45 pm : link
I couldn't disagree with you any stronger.

Coughlin is widely criticized for not being a leader when no one on the field took the responsibility. Apathetic play for much of the season, ill prepared, the team was in shambles. Steve Smith, Manningham, and Nicks were the only bright spots of the season, and Manning had a career year because our Running game was maligned.
It is your right to disagree :)
Sneakers O'toole : 4/5/2010 4:46 pm : link
.
upthegut--actually, the reason we did this
nittmo : 4/5/2010 4:53 pm : link
at 4 p. and not noon as originally planned was that Smith was on the west coast and the Giants FO didn't want to wake him up too early. We told the FO about the dedication to Hope so Steve could comment on that aspect if he wanted to, and he graciously did.

Don't be so cynical.
Congratulations to Smith
crick78 : 4/5/2010 4:54 pm : link
Just think if Eli didn't hurt his foot, Smith's stats more than likely would have been even better.
Congrats to Steve

110 catches, Pro Bowl season, and he was clearly our top WR (not to mention a top 4 receiver in the NFL all season). Eli had a good season, but I don't see how you can say that Eli got screwed. It was a close vote, as it should have been, and Smith earned it.
Nice job by everyone involved & the "real" Steve Smith's
TheMick7 : 4/5/2010 6:40 pm : link
comments showed the class we've come to expect from everyone connected with the Giants organization. Congrats to Steve & for those worried about the jinx remember...Hope won't allow it to happen!!!
stop the eli got screwed talk
ligmen : 4/5/2010 6:45 pm : link
Everyone thought our WR core was in shambles. Smith becomes 1st pro bowl wr giants in decades and also breaks team records. The ironic thing is by seasons end, WR is one of our stronger positions.

Love Eli, but how can you deny Smith.
no one got screwed
GMenLTS : 4/5/2010 6:49 pm : link
just like if Eli had won it, SS wouldn't have gotten screwed

They both deserved it (and Smith would probably just as well say Eli deserved it more.)

Whoever won would have been worthy

The only reason why I did not vote for Eli
Steve in South Jersey : 4/5/2010 6:57 pm : link
was that he is irreplaceable and too valuable to risk a continuation of the hex. If Eli goes down the season if over.

I pretty much called this kind of season from SS and I just love that guy, and I'm one of the biggest Eli fanboys here.

Biel/Fox or Aniston/Marisa Miller

There was no wrong answer. I win either way
Good thing

I voted Eli, but I can easily see why Smith very much earned the award.

Steve Smith REAL Statement Was…
Jim in Tampa : 4/6/2010 1:04 pm : link
“WTF is a BBI?”

(Kidding)

Actually, not to be cynical, but I agree (at least in part) with UpTheGut, in that this statement was largely crafted by the Giant’s PR Dept. and/or Smith’s agent.

As a marketing consultant I do the same type of thing when interviewing my client’s customers to get testimonials and endorsements for my client’s businesses. It’s a necessary evil because most people don’t give usable quotes. If you used “word-for-word” what they REALLY said, it would make everybody look bad.

So a PR/Marketing guy takes some of the words and the hopefully the sentiments of the interviewee (like Steve Smith) and rewrites their “quote” to make it sound better. Then they get the interviewee to sign off on the final version of the quote.

The end result in this case is a well-crafted quote that makes Steve Smith and the Giants look good and a fan website (BBI) that feels good about their award and their support of the team.

Everybody wins.
Jim
Davisian : 4/6/2010 1:21 pm : link
Of course it probably (definitely) went through Hanlon and/or Smith's agent, but Smith has been accessible to the fans for a long time. Especially once he started his facebook page. One read through that and you can see that the released statement is not far from how he interacts with the fans.

This was not the first time he heard of BBI.
Jim
David in LA : 4/6/2010 1:33 pm : link

nittmo : 4/6/2010 2:26 pm : link
in media, I assure you I know all about the crafting of a quote for a client. The point I took issue with was upthegut's assertion that Smith probably didn't even know he had won the award or that a quote had been released on his behalf. Having been involved in the process, I can tell you that was not the case.
Congrats Steve Smith

Steve deserved this award. Not only is he a tremendous football player, but he's repeatedly shown via his FB page that he knows that without the fans, there is no football league. He treats everyone with respect. This is the kind of athlete that I'd like my children to emulate and look up to. As a man and a player.
