Steve Smith - 2009 Hope D Johnson BBI Giant of the Year

rnargi : 4/5/2010 4:10 pm
Congratulations to Steve Smith, BBI Giant of the Year!

First, Eric, Gary, Tim (nittmo), and I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported this effort. This year came down to two candidates and the result was in doubt all week.

In the end, however, wide receiver Steve Smith edged out quarterback Eli Manning to win the award. Of a total of 787 votes cast by registered and confirmed members of the site, Smith received 389 votes and Manning received 330 votes. Others receiving votes were Terrell Thomas (17), Kevin Boss (16); Tom Coughlin (12); Hakeem Nicks (6); David Diehl (6); Chris Snee (5); Shaun O’Hara (3); and Mathias Kiwanuka (3).

Steve has reached out to BBI and provided a statement that I want to share here:

“In our game, individual recognition is the result of teamwork. I am humbled that BBI has chosen me as its Giant of the Year, but I wouldn’t even be a candidate if it weren’t for our entire offense, especially Eli. So I am thankful, and I am honored to be the first recipient after the award has been re-named in the memory of Hope, whose spirit and passion for the Giants embodied what being a Giants fan and being a member of BBI is all about. Hope was a great ambassador for the Giants, and it’s fitting this award should be in her name.”

Again, thank you to Gary for setting up the poll and keeping this years' vote to registered and verified members of the Corner Forum; to Tim for coordinating with the Giants throughout, and to Eric because it's his site and I have to thank him (grin!)

Most of all, thanks to all of you.

Why are people still saying it jinxed
GMANinDC : 4/5/2010 4:15 pm : link
knowing that we changed the name and honor to someone of Hope's ilk?..It defies logic..

Supposed curses can be reversed..
Gman raises a good point

Hope will protect Steve from harm.

write up from Pat Hanlon and the Giants PR staff.

I bet Steve doesnt even know he won the award yet.
No real reason GMAN
Big Blue '56 : 4/5/2010 4:20 pm : link
2006 winner Tiki caused one hell of a drama during his "retirement" tour, not to mention all the shit after he was done

2007 Plax

2008 Jacobs

Nah, no biggie, after all, So many others were injured as well...
We have a hard time drafting LBs
kiwi : 4/5/2010 4:22 pm : link
and finding Strahan's replacement yet Kiwanuka is replaceable? Another case of be careful what you wish for.
What a classy statement...
Jan in DC : 4/5/2010 4:23 pm : link
Glad he won. He definitely deserved it after the year he had.
Anywho congrats to SS
Big Blue '56 : 4/5/2010 4:24 pm : link
But Eli was clearly the MVP and it wasn't even close, imho..SS 107 catches, MM 57(?) Nicks a terrific rookie year..Common denominator? Duh
not one of those
upthegut : 4/5/2010 4:24 pm : link
words came from Steve's mouth, pen, paper, or computer. That was written by the giants PR staff.
Good thing
Scyber : 4/5/2010 4:26 pm : link
We have much better depth at WR than QB ;)
Smith
Mark from Jersey : 4/5/2010 4:27 pm : link

Smith, awesome Giant on and off the field
BB56
GMANinDC : 4/5/2010 4:29 pm : link
Isn't that one of the reasons the award was re-named?..That should resolve all the jinxes we have had..
Can't be mad at that...
T-Bone : 4/5/2010 4:30 pm : link
he would've been my second choice.
GMAN
Big Blue '56 : 4/5/2010 4:32 pm : link
The award was renamed to honor a terrific human being, but does not guarantee a pass from injury/problems..:)
Fabulous
HBart : 4/5/2010 4:34 pm : link
A tremendous year by Smith and particularly amazing in the context of an otherwise disastrous season - if it weren't for him we'd have had to take a year off from awarding the trophy or otherwise dilute the significance of it.
Common denominator? Coach Sullivan
Motley Blue : 4/5/2010 4:35 pm : link
Not even on the ballot.
Steve
steve in maryland : 4/5/2010 4:40 pm : link
those were wonderfull words. I look forward to seeing you receive this award over and over in the future.
puzzled by some of the votes
JOrthman : 4/5/2010 4:42 pm : link
Boss and TC?
I voted for Coughlin
Sneakers O'toole : 4/5/2010 4:43 pm : link
because he held the team together, we didn't see all of the backbiting and infighting in the media that we have seen at times in the past when things go wrong. The team stayed on message. Sometimes you learn more about the quality of your head coach in the bad years.
I knew it would not be a popular pick here too :)
Sneakers O'toole : 4/5/2010 4:44 pm : link
not after this season
Coughlin held the team together?
wewonsbxlii : 4/5/2010 4:45 pm : link
I couldn't disagree with you any stronger.

Coughlin is widely criticized for not being a leader when no one on the field took the responsibility. Apathetic play for much of the season, ill prepared, the team was in shambles. Steve Smith, Manningham, and Nicks were the only bright spots of the season, and Manning had a career year because our Running game was maligned.
It is your right to disagree :)
