Steve Smith - 2009 Hope D Johnson BBI Giant of the Year

rnargi : 4/5/2010 4:10 pm
Congratulations to Steve Smith, BBI Giant of the Year!

First, Eric, Gary, Tim (nittmo), and I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported this effort. This year came down to two candidates and the result was in doubt all week.

In the end, however, wide receiver Steve Smith edged out quarterback Eli Manning to win the award. Of a total of 787 votes cast by registered and confirmed members of the site, Smith received 389 votes and Manning received 330 votes. Others receiving votes were Terrell Thomas (17), Kevin Boss (16); Tom Coughlin (12); Hakeem Nicks (6); David Diehl (6); Chris Snee (5); Shaun O’Hara (3); and Mathias Kiwanuka (3).

Steve has reached out to BBI and provided a statement that I want to share here:

“In our game, individual recognition is the result of teamwork. I am humbled that BBI has chosen me as its Giant of the Year, but I wouldn’t even be a candidate if it weren’t for our entire offense, especially Eli. So I am thankful, and I am honored to be the first recipient after the award has been re-named in the memory of Hope, whose spirit and passion for the Giants embodied what being a Giants fan and being a member of BBI is all about. Hope was a great ambassador for the Giants, and it’s fitting this award should be in her name.”

Again, thank you to Gary for setting up the poll and keeping this years' vote to registered and verified members of the Corner Forum; to Tim for coordinating with the Giants throughout, and to Eric because it's his site and I have to thank him (grin!)

Most of all, thanks to all of you.

Anak's guy didn't win. So let's throw away all the votes tallied on the account of one whiny kid.
Congrats Steve

G-Men, Steve Smith has arrived.
Is Anak serious with that whining?

I voted Eli, but I can easily see why Smith very much earned the award.

Steve Smith REAL Statement Was…

“WTF is a BBI?”

(Kidding)

Actually, not to be cynical, but I agree (at least in part) with UpTheGut, in that this statement was largely crafted by the Giant’s PR Dept. and/or Smith’s agent.

As a marketing consultant I do the same type of thing when interviewing my client’s customers to get testimonials and endorsements for my client’s businesses. It’s a necessary evil because most people don’t give usable quotes. If you used “word-for-word” what they REALLY said, it would make everybody look bad.

So a PR/Marketing guy takes some of the words and the hopefully the sentiments of the interviewee (like Steve Smith) and rewrites their “quote” to make it sound better. Then they get the interviewee to sign off on the final version of the quote.

The end result in this case is a well-crafted quote that makes Steve Smith and the Giants look good and a fan website (BBI) that feels good about their award and their support of the team.

Everybody wins.

Of course it probably (definitely) went through Hanlon and/or Smith's agent, but Smith has been accessible to the fans for a long time. Especially once he started his facebook page. One read through that and you can see that the released statement is not far from how he interacts with the fans.

This was not the first time he heard of BBI.

I can't wait for Mario Manningham to win it next year only to see his crafted statement lol.

in media, I assure you I know all about the crafting of a quote for a client. The point I took issue with was upthegut's assertion that Smith probably didn't even know he had won the award or that a quote had been released on his behalf. Having been involved in the process, I can tell you that was not the case.
Congrats Steve Smith

Well deserved accomplishment! The curse where every Giant WR who wins this award ends up shooting themself stops here.

A total class act. Could not think of a better Giants to receive the first trophy named after Hope.

Steve deserved this award. Not only is he a tremendous football player, but he's repeatedly shown via his FB page that he knows that without the fans, there is no football league. He treats everyone with respect. This is the kind of athlete that I'd like my children to emulate and look up to. As a man and a player.
