Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder says the only way of preventing helmet-to-helmet hits is to eliminate the helmet. Otherwise he's going to use his, regardless of punishment from league officials. "If I get a chance to knock somebody out, I'm going to knock them out and take what they give me," Crowder said Wednesday. "They give me a helmet, I'm going to use it." |
This was a good one:
More recently:
''I don't know this Channing Crowder,'' said Ryan, the Jets' first-year head coach. "All I know is that he's all tatted up, so I guess I ought to be nervous about him. The other thing is I think he's wrong because I do think you win in June. I think you win with your preparation and all that kind of stuff. If I was younger, I'd probably handle him myself.''
So yes, it's June. And yes, a linebacker and a head coach from rival teams are talking trash. This might be the football equivalent of Christmas in July -- and it only gets better. Reached on his cellphone Tuesday, Crowder responded to Ryan's comments with this:
''Oh, Lord have mercy,'' Crowder said Tuesday. "What's wrong with him? Now he's talking about preparation? We play them twice this year. If he wants to be prepared, shouldn't he know the starting middle linebackers of his division rival?''
As for the notion that Ryan would ''handle him myself'' if he was ''younger,'' Crowder begs to differ.
''He says he'd take care of me if he was younger?'' Crowder said. "I'd have beat the hell out of that big old joker. Or if he really wants to get retro, my daddy or my uncle could have handled him. Don't get big. Win with preparation? Start watching some tape and learn who your rival is. Come on now.''

This issue however, seems like it truly has divided offensive and defensive players.
From some respects I can understand defensive players general dissatisfaction with the announcement about the new focus on enforcing these rules. So much can happen incidentally (and intent is VERY hard to determine) and now they're not just suggesting game changing penalties (which I think will increase) but costing the defensive players money through suspensions.
It will be interesting to see how many hit from last year would have been suspensions, so we know if this is a mountain out of a mole hill
He is one of the smarter players in the NFL. He was a Natyional Honor Society Member in high school and scored a 1,280 on the SAT. He plays a position that requires intellect and he has a solid wit to boot.
But yeah, "he's always been dumb"...holy fuck.
"They want to save the receivers and quarterbacks because they sell all the jerseys," Crowder said. "They don't give a damn at all about defensive players because we don't sell as many jerseys as them. ...
"If they want to change football to a graceful sport, change it all the way to a graceful sport. Don't try to save the quarterbacks and receivers because they make the money, which that's what they're doing."
wouldn't be surprised after further review if the dumb thing went either way with him, but just reacting to whats above.
also, the skill players clearly get preferential treatment, but its not just the jerseys. they often cant be the aggressors because of worrying about the ball so obviously they're more susceptible/more the focus of protection rules.
