Blackmon Update

hawkman : 10/28/2010 8:03 pm
As I mentioned several weeks ago the GMEN were talking to Will for a while. I had the pleasure of coaching Will in high school where he had a legendary career at Bishop Hendricken in Rhode Island. In addition to his tremendous athleticism he is a great young man and a wonderful teammate..a high character person. He faced much adversity early in life as his mom passed away when Will was young but his father did a tremendous job in raising him and teaching him the importance of hard work , dedication, and being the best that you can be.
He went to Boston College ,where he roomed with Kiwi, and played corner for his first few years and then was switched to wideout his senior year...while it cost him several rounds in the draft(and much money) he nonetheless became a nickel corner for the Pack and a superb punt returner..in today's day and age of spoiled and pampered athletes Will has never forgotten his roots and where he came from... if he is healthy Will be be a great addition to Big Blue.I am elated for Will and for the GMEN.
Thanks for the post

Background info like this is pure gold.
Thanks for the personal touch and commentary

He seems like a high character guy. I know Kiwi had dinner with him I believe last night and spoke highly of him as well.

High character is great. If he shores up some of our special teams problems well that will go a long way in paving the way for us to another SB title.

It is just a shame we had to lose Kiwi to gain him.
sounds like a great guy to root for.

thanks for sharing.
Nice kid, great story, rooting for him..............................

But the bottom line is that he wasn't on a roster, he has been cut several times, etc. It is not like the Giants just snuck one by the rest of the league. Decent waiver wire pickup and nothing else. You would have thought that the Giants had picked up a young Deion Sanders based on posts on other threads.

he's a vet
sshin05 : 10/28/2010 8:50 pm : link
yet he's only 26, so he still has a chance to stick somewhere and I'm glad the giants gave him a shot.
Giants got Hixon

midseason off the scrap heap, too. And Madison Hedgecock. Those moves were crucial during the Super Bowl year. Those of us excited about this move are hoping for a similar impact from Blackmon.
Thanks, nice stuff

Interesting that he roomed with Kiwi in college. I love that the Giants get "high character" guys.
Thanks so much

That is excellent information. Giants like high quality , high character players (Plax aside). I hope he replaces Renauld (sp?) as soon as possible.
Please tell me

the several times he was cut. He was drafted by the Packers and waived off injured reserve. It sounds like the Giants kept tabs on him while he was getting healthier. By no means is he a great player but could serve as an upgrade at many special teams positions. Don't make stuff up.
Thanks Coach

Your opinion of him as a prospective gunner
TO DC JEFF
hawkman : 10/28/2010 9:26 pm : link
Will was cut because of injuries.....I beg to differ that he was "on the scrap heap"....I am as objective about the Giants as anyone and have been rooting for them for over 50 years and while I am excited for him being a Giant I truly believe if he is healthy he will be a great addition..I have never compared his abilities to Deion...but I can assure you of one thing..he is a fine young man who does not deserve to be degraded by you as you know nothing about him..sorry he apparently has not met your expectations..he has always met mine
gunner
hawkman : 10/28/2010 9:32 pm : link
He played defense, offense, and special teams at BC ..he played corner and was used in nickel and dime packages with the Pack..I believe he holds the NFL record for returning a punt and a fumble in a single game...I feel he can have a positive impact on our special teams, especially as a punt returner as long as he remains healthy
hawkman...great insight from the inside, thanks for sharing!
darasman : 10/28/2010 9:34 pm : link
this might be one of the missing peices we need to right the STs....

Good stuff, thanks Coach!

Eric from BBI : Admin : 10/28/2010 9:51 pm : link
Based on everything I've read, and supported by statistics, he seems to have been a very mediocre kickoff returner (much better on punts). Any thoughts on that?

hawkman : 10/28/2010 9:59 pm : link
Will has had more success as a punt returner but he can also be a legit KR in the NFL..he has good size and speed and can be a real bonafide contributor to our special teams..the key for Will is remaining healthy...he had no injury history in high school and nothing out of the ordinary at BC.......
Key
Toth029 : 10/29/2010 12:41 am : link
Is blocking. Reynaud had good numbers from MIN and he hasn't done much here, neither. The Giants KR blocking was awful vs. DAL, and hasn't impressed at all this season.

giantranger : 10/29/2010 2:38 am : link
so the good numbers he had in Minny really didn't impress you? What are you trying to say? Apparently the blocking for him is currently awful, but with good blocking like he had in Minny, he'd be slightly better then average? Your post is confusing.

thanks for the post about Blackmon. I love hearing these things about our Giants. I'm rooting for him all the way.
Thanks hawkman. Would Blacmon's signing (and getting Kiwi's

roster slot) in any way soften the emotional blow for Kiwi (re losing the remainder of the season due to his injury?)
Thanks

coach.
Sounds like a great kid who deserves a shot.

Let's hope he's able to take advantage of the opportunity.

Thanks, Hawk

Really nice to get a personal insight to a (especially new) player...rooting for him.
Thank you hawkman! Great info

I'm happy Will is on the team and I hope he plays great and gets signed to a multi-year contract with the GMen.
