Possibility kiwi wont play again

BigBluDawg : 2/26/2011 10:35 am
Just reported on twitter:

TheBlueScreen Ralph Vacchiano
GM Jerry Reese says "its a possibility" DE Mathias Kiwanuka won't play again. He's still seeing doctors, gathering info. #NYG

TheBlueScreen Ralph Vacchiano
More Reese on Kiwi: "He has to decide 'Do I want to play.' There's some risk involved." Then #NYG have to decide if they want to sign him.
that sucks for Kiwi

Don't take a chance, Kiwi - you want to be able to walk the rest of your life!
Do the Giants ever catch a break?
HomerJones45 : 2/26/2011 11:07 am : link
Unbelieveable
Just get well
RodneyHamp : 2/26/2011 11:16 am : link
Kiwi, football is secondary.
that quote from Reese
bceagle05 : 2/26/2011 11:21 am : link
is like a punch in the gut. Such a shame. I really enjoyed watching Kiwi play when he was healthy. Seems like he became a real team leader right from the start, too.
I was upset when they picked JPP ....
Manny in CA : 2/26/2011 11:32 am : link
Not knowing Osi had a chronic hip; now it looks like Osi's going to be OK. And now this, the JPP pick is looking better and better.
Two years
G-MEN-IN-MIAMI : 2/26/2011 11:38 am : link
In a row with the same type of injury on this team? Anyone else in the NFL getting these or are the Giants just getting dealt some bad breaks.
PLEASE don't let it come in threes!!
I don't think that the
Enoch : 2/26/2011 11:40 am : link
career-threatening nature of Kiwanuka's injury is really a surprise to anyone. Probably-chronic neck issues generally mean that playing football is a bad idea.

The most optimistic way to read this is Reese trying to lower Kiwi's market value so that they can get him signed to a cheap incentive-heavy "1 year to prove you're healthy" contract. But part of me hopes that Giants management isn't that cynical.

Removing the disc is there really a 'healthy' scenario that come out of this? Seems more of a scenario where Kiwi risks it or doesn't and that is the decision.
We still have Osi, Tuck, and JPP. They can pick one in rds

2-7.
having two herniated discs in my neck

I knew what Kiwanuka was likely faced with, and I hope he makes the best decision for himself even if it means retiring from football.
In my opinion....
Britt in VA : 2/26/2011 12:17 pm : link
his career with the Giants is over.

Even if he wants to play again, how can we risk signing him to a new deal?

This team is devastated by injury year in, year out. We just can't keep a ticking time bomb on the team.

Get well, Kiwi.

Reese says Kiwanuka's career in doubt - ( New Window )
This is a special young individual who
PeterS : 2/26/2011 12:32 pm : link
can parlay his intelligence, hardwork and dedication and become a successful businessman or political leader. I wish him nothing but the best.
As a free agent
Bino5 : 2/26/2011 12:45 pm : link
I'm sure Kiwi and his agent really appreciate Reese putting those comments out there.
From the Giants' point of view ....
Manny in CA : 2/26/2011 1:00 pm : link
I'm sure they wished this had never happened, but they have to face it now.

Their absolute worse nightmare is the specter of a paralyzed player on the field, with questions about why they sent him out there. Explanations about how "he wanted to play" aren't good enough at that point.

Sounds like Jerry is ready to move on.
Common sense said it was never a possibility,
Big Blue '56 : 2/26/2011 1:23 pm : link
rather a probability. This 1 yr contract stuff was whistling in the dark
That sucks Kiwi was quite an athlete, and really

coming on.
What a bad break..
TD : 2/26/2011 1:42 pm : link
he flashed a ton and was really coming on as a very good 2 way DE before he got hurt. Seemed like a guy who just caught a lot of bad breaks in his young career. Hope everything works out well for him - on the field but more importantly, off.
And yeah...
TD : 2/26/2011 1:43 pm : link
if it wasn't already, another first round DE is a very distinct possibility...
i doubt
Eggs55 : 2/26/2011 1:45 pm : link
it
unreal
TheGM : 2/26/2011 1:59 pm : link
we really are one unlucky franchise when it comes to injuries.
Well, so much for that..
arcarsenal : 2/26/2011 2:14 pm : link
Apparently he's been cleared to play?
That lasted long
Anakim : 2/26/2011 2:16 pm : link
NYPost_Schwartz Jerry Reese says Mathias Kiwanuka (herniated cervical disk) has received medical clearance to play. Now Giants have to re-sign him. #nyg
I think we can un-sticky this now...
