Looked like Parcells has him rated in the 3rd round.
good stuff
DCPollaro : 4/26/2011 9:50 pm : link
they should have made this a 3 day special
sure is fun
ITaLiRiCaN : 4/26/2011 9:51 pm : link

Those without cable

Are no real surprise. He likes them big. All at least 6'3" and 280+. Other than Quinn, who I am assuming he sees as a 3-4 OLB.

Have to remember Bill has a 3-4 mentality on defense.
OLB
jlukes : 4/26/2011 9:58 pm : link
Miller
Aldon Smith
Ryan Kerrigan

ILB
Nate Irving

Quinn was a DE on his board
ITaLiRiCaN : 4/26/2011 9:59 pm : link
and who the heck is Martez Williams?
OT - Solder
rasbutant : 4/26/2011 10:04 pm : link
looks like top of the 1st, rated high then smith.
Some guys absolutely love JJ Watt
Adam XLII : 4/26/2011 10:11 pm : link
not only is he a good prospect, but he is maybe the highest character guy in the 1st round (I don't know how you rate that, but Watt definitely 'gets it').

All the mocks that have him going in the teens are way off. Dude is going top 12.
This is the best I have seen Parcells look in a long time

I love when Parcells
Exit 172 : 4/26/2011 10:25 pm : link
addresses himself as "Parcells" in his inner dialogue.
Great stuff

some very cool insight on evaluating players

Shows like this
bceagle05 : 4/26/2011 10:34 pm : link
are what ESPN SHOULD be. Instead, they choose to serve the lowest common denominator.
Parcells' QB criteria kind of surprise me.
Exit 172 : 4/26/2011 10:34 pm : link
"Must win 23 games" -- A QB doesn't win games alone.

"Must have 2:1 TD to INT ratio" -- What about dropped TDs? What about INTs that aren't the QB's fault? Stats lie a lot in football.

"Must complete 60% of passes" -- What about dropped passes? What if a QB's completion % is 58 or 59? Again, stats lie in football.

Some QBs can also rack up these numbers in inferior conferences, while QBs in tougher conferences might not rack up these numbers but still be the more NFL-ready QBs.
Parcells
ITaLiRiCaN : 4/26/2011 10:36 pm : link
relies a bit too much on size and stats for my liking. But, he's rich because of it.
Really all that means is that he wants a QB
armsteadeatslittlekids : 4/26/2011 10:38 pm : link
who isn't a one year wonder and is accurate.
Andy Dalton
ITaLiRiCaN : 4/26/2011 10:40 pm : link
is probably the only QB to fit those criteria.
You can bet Watt's
Lionhart28 : 4/26/2011 10:42 pm : link
size is what has him above some more talented pass rushers. I do agree he is going to be a very good player for a long time though. How about Nate Irving!?!
I like what he says
AnishPatel : 4/26/2011 10:44 pm : link
about RBs. The grading system with letters is a very popular system. That's how I was taught as well. I like how he has all those examples off the top of his head.
anish
ITaLiRiCaN : 4/26/2011 10:59 pm : link
in all my journeys around the internet for draft research this season, I've only found that nationalfootballpost.com uses the letter system as well, although it's different than the one Parcells laid out.
I saw quite a few NC State games
TheGM : 4/26/2011 11:01 pm : link
and Nate Irving is all over the field. He is around the ball almost every play.
speaking of Nate Irving
ITaLiRiCaN : 4/26/2011 11:02 pm : link
I'm going to find the scouting report I found on him and read up to see why he's a first rounder.
here is one i just found

Nate Irving

Battled back from a bad car accident in 2009. Leader and tough player. Sideline-to-sideline and a 3 down linebacker. Good football IQ and read-and-react skills. Hard worker. Can play any linebacker position.

6'1" 242, 4.7 40. Can pressure the A gap. Flexible and good change of direction skills. Plays too high at times.

2 season starter. Not a powerful player. Sometimes takes poor angles.

Not a great tackler and not very explosive. Relies on speed too often. Good at ripping the ball trying to force fumbles.

7 sacks in 2010. Not a great pass-rusher. Above average in zone coverage, needs to work on his man coverage.

3rd-5th round projection. 19.5 TFL in 2010.

4.8 speed, described as a two-down backer...
Russel in VA : 4/26/2011 11:13 pm : link
Sure Parcells has his reasons and I'd trust him over an amateur draftnik, but I'd be interested to hear what they are.
That was the best sports related show I've seen
Motley Blue : 4/26/2011 11:14 pm : link
in a long time.

I'm stoked for the draft now.
Thanks Coach!

Assumption is that dropped TDs will get balanced by WR created TDs, INTs caused by WRs will get balanced by balls saved by the WR, dropped passes are balanced by excellent bail-out catches, etc.
good clip of Nate Irving

It was an excellent...
Chris in Philly : 4/26/2011 11:19 pm : link
show, and a reminder of what a station like ESPN can provide. I'm gonna watch it again.
A great
AcidTest : 4/26/2011 11:22 pm : link
show. Liked the fact that Parcells admitted his mistakes, like drafting Pat White, and not drafting Munoz.
is it re-airing anytime soon?
TheGM : 4/27/2011 12:06 am : link
I missed it and would love to watch it
I wanna see it too
Optimus-NY : 4/27/2011 2:32 am : link
Was busy tonight and forget that it was airing. Shit. Anyone know when it's on again?
re: prince
Matt G : 4/27/2011 3:06 am : link
Parcells also cautioned that his short arms are less than ideal for a CB...
ITaLiRiCaN ,
AnishPatel : 4/27/2011 7:08 am : link
Yeah, in popular media, specifically on draft sites it's not used. I learned it from Russ Lande Jr. I think that was the way they did things when he scouted. I feel very comfortable grading that way. I know Coach Garrett Sr. showed me his draft notes, and he grades players differently. If I recall correctly, it was based on a 1-10 scale for various critical factors. Then an avg was given, and the player was compared to someone ON THE TEAM past or present i believe to give coaches an idea of the talent level.

The grading system with letters always worked for me so seeing that last night used by parcells was cool for me because that's how I learned it a bunch of years back.
Parcells doesn't exactly have the best
barens : 4/27/2011 7:47 am : link
draft history...I never thought that was one of his strengths.
How About This Tid Bit
Bernie : 4/27/2011 8:13 am : link
Total guaranteed money for the 2010 1st round draft class was $360 million. When you add in "likely to be earned" bonuses, the number balloons to $500 million. Those amounts get paid regardless of how a player performs.

And people wonder why the owners opted out of the labor agreement.
Ryan Mallett also meets Parcells criteria.
Section331 : 4/27/2011 8:25 am : link
I didn't see this, how did BP rate the QB's?
Echo the desire to catch a re-air

Section
Matt G : 4/27/2011 10:40 am : link
Parcells' QBs were ranked Cam Netwon then Blaine Gabbert in RD1... In RD2, he had Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder and then Jake Locker...

Somewhat amususing considering all the pub this methodology has been getting of late and yet none of his top 5 QBs fit the mold... Whereas Dalton, Stazi and Kaeparnick fit the criteria yet are futher down on the list...
I thought it was good, very informative.
Jim in Forest Hills : 4/27/2011 11:22 am : link
I was hoping for some insight to the actual war rooms, what it was like to deal with Young, and then Jerruh, that would've been great.

Ahhh
Motley Blue : 4/27/2011 11:29 am : link
But Dalton doesn't have prototypical size.
that was a great show last night with him and tirico
micky : 4/27/2011 12:04 pm : link
they used to do the same thing on ESPN radio very earl sunday mornings when Parcells worked for ESPN.

Interesting to see where/if his sleeper goes.
BP
Simms : 4/27/2011 1:06 pm : link
I always liked BP but his own track record on draft day has been suspect more times than not. George Young and him always battled.
I thoughtt
Burt in Alameda : 4/27/2011 3:45 pm : link
it was an excellent show. The inside stuff about drafting and ranking players was just outstanding. Parcells obviously knows what he is talking about, and ESPN should be commended for giving him as much air time as it did.
Yeah, one of the best things ESPN has done in a while
Motley Blue : 4/27/2011 3:54 pm : link
and I didn't feel like I was being yelled at by loudmouths.
