a lot more than i would have given him. Curious how much is guaranteed.
My guess it is backloaded
jlukes : 8/4/2011 2:01 pm : link
and is very cap-friendly the first 3 years.
Not as bad as I had guessed, actually.
Enoch : 8/4/2011 2:01 pm : link
The general trend on these early free agency moves has been towards overpaying.

is that good he gets that deal?

you don't think that this deal is considered overpaying?

Good.

T-Bone : 8/4/2011 2:12 pm : link
I don't consider it to be overpaying either...why do you? I think 5 mil a year average is about right for a good center but could be completely wrong as I haven't looked up with the average center is making nowadays.

Of course, it's the guaranteed money that's really important. How much are decent centers making nowadays? I have no idea.
Guys
Fab_Montreal : 8/4/2011 2:14 pm : link
lets not assume its back loaded yet. JR free agency has overspent compared to value hes brought in. so lets wait and see
What the hell are you talking about, moron?
Klaatu : 8/4/2011 2:21 pm : link
JR's overspent? For whom, Kiwi? Bradshaw? Ben Patrick? You're an ass.
Canty, Boley and Bernard
Mayhap : 8/4/2011 2:23 pm : link
are usually brought up when someone complains about JR overpaying.
Bernard is gone...so much for paying him anymore money.
Klaatu : 8/4/2011 2:31 pm : link
Boley's contract is good but hardly Earth-shattering. Canty's contract (which is very similar to Osi's, by the way) was hefty, but the value was there considering the market for DTs and the fact that Cofield and Robbins were both coming back from microfracture surgery.
Baas is a very good player.
arcarsenal : 8/4/2011 2:32 pm : link
It's worth it if it means having our guy for the next 5 years to anchor the OL.
11.5 mil guaranteed

The deal includes $11.5 million guaranteed.

I'm guessing Baas' best negotiating tactic was to sit across the table from Jerry Reese and Kevin Abrams and just glare at them. I mean, seriously, that is one tough-looking dude.

Or he had his agent call. That, too.

A look at the deal for Baas, who turns 30 on Sept. 28:

SIGNING BONUS: $8.5 million

BASE SALARIES

2011: $1m (guaranteed)
2012: $3m ($2m guaranteed)
2013: $4.25m
2014: $4.75m
2015: $5m

WORKOUT BONUSES: $250,000 each year from 2012-15

Quick math shows that works out to these salary-cap numbers:

2011: $2.7m
2012: $4.95m
2013: $6.2m
2014: $6.7m
2015: $6.95m

Learns the playbook quickly and is very good for the program, evident by the drastic improvement of the team's ground game in 2004 after he shifted to center (team improved from 106.0 yards per game to 189.7 on the ground).

Baas came into the league in 2005 FYI

great contract
enjayray : 8/4/2011 2:53 pm : link
hope he doesnt hold out after his 1st pancake block
This will be Baas' 7th playbook in 7 years.
arcarsenal : 8/4/2011 2:54 pm : link
I'm sure he's thankful that this is the last one he'll need to learn for a while.

Unless of course the team has a miserable year somehow and TC gets fired. But I'd like to think that won't be the case.
Uh oh...
Randy in CT : 8/4/2011 2:58 pm : link
The contract gurus here at BBI are second-guessing the Giants!!
Boley has not played up to contract,
Fab_Montreal : 8/4/2011 3:08 pm : link
Bernard well that was a good signing(joke)
canty to much money and hasnt performed up to contract to what we are paying him. Dont tell me that free agency year was money well spent
Canty and Boley are fine.

the $$$
Canty was injured for most of 2009.
arcarsenal : 8/4/2011 3:15 pm : link
He was much better last year and he'll be good this year. Most players are overpaid after their rookie deals. Boley is due 3.5 M this year.. it's not a huge deal.
Boley
OC : 8/4/2011 3:18 pm : link
Has not played up to his contract? Obviously you weren't getting the games up in Montreal when we were getting torched by TE's. Well guess what HASN'T been happening since he's been healthy?
OC..
arcarsenal : 8/4/2011 3:20 pm : link
For many people, if it's not on a stat sheet it didn't happen.. unfortunately.

Boley isn't an elite player by any means but I think he's played well here and he gets a lot of flak because of his contract. He's probably the best LB we have right now.
randy right, lol

oh and I forgot we came up second to washington for Albert Hainsworth...that would have been another spectacular JR pick up in free agency

Klaatu : 8/4/2011 3:30 pm : link
What would you have done to remedy our DT situation back then? And what was your plan heading into free-agency this year? What did you want the Giants to accomplish?
Fab
OC : 8/4/2011 3:32 pm : link
I don't recall seeing Fewell on the field last year. What # is he? I'll look for him this year.

Baas won the Rimington Trophy (best college center) in 2004, his senior year. It's not like last year was the first time he ever played the position.
I should know better, I really should.
Klaatu : 8/4/2011 3:44 pm : link
Fab, you're just a shit-stirring troll, so I'm done with you and this thread. Piss up a rope, asshole.
Baas
OC : 8/4/2011 3:45 pm : link
Someone already mentioned how the SF running game improved by 70/80 yrds. a game after he went to Center. That in itself is enough for me considering they had little pass O.
Im trying to picture one
Lionhart28 : 8/4/2011 3:50 pm : link
pissing up a rope right now. Sounds intriguing...
the Giants
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/4/2011 3:55 pm : link
signed the best center on the open market and people are complaining?

Without him, Snee would be starting at center right now.
Shotgun snaps
Marty866b : 8/4/2011 4:01 pm : link
I hope Bass'shotgun snaps have alot more velocity on them then O'Hara's did.O'Hara's shotgun snaps reminded me of Steve Hamilton's "folly floater".
