Steve Smith I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning... |
I get it!
I'm in total shock was hands down my favorite player on the team.
Happy for him that he got himself $2 mm guaranteed, but I just dont see him getting a chance to showcase himself for a big payday next offseason. Not with DJax, McCoy, Maclin, Avant, Celek, R Brown, and a QB that loves to run, all in the mix.
I can't believe I'm saying this about a guy who was one of my favorite Giants... but fuck you, Steve.
Fuck!
I won't root for Smith even if he goes to another team next season.
Steve Smith is dead to me.
This stinks to high heaven of a money grab which makes me wonder whether that knee is really ready or if Smith will ever be the same.
Giants must have gotten negative medical reports.
Even with their shopping spree, the Eagles were several more million UNDER the cap than the Giants...so they simply ACED the Giants with the extra room.
+2 to them if it works (+1 for getting him, +1 for taking him off the Giants)
We were strapped and couldn't afford the guarantee. Go fuck yourself with a 50 ft. rusty ass pole.
It is what it is. Thanks for the memories. I hope KP ***** you up on a crossing pattern.
times pie.
I guess pretty soon I'm going to start to feel like I'm rooting for laundry.
Why is everybody pissed with SS. He had every right to take the deal. It's not like the Giants matched and he walked, or took care of him after his record breaking season. It's a business both ways.
Because I don't want to read his BS anymore, clearly it's all about the money. Not happy to see him gone but I'd rather Reese not overpay for him.
Good luck, SS...except when you play any game for the Eagles.
Knee injuries are pretty detrimental to any athlete, and to WRs they tend to level a good impact (and never positively).
I do think the Giants are being careful with their money and cap situation. They're going to want to lock up guys like Thomas and Manningham I would think and maybe look at a few other FAs as well.
I'm really excited to see what Cruz can do.
I'm gonna change the number to 21 and was hoping I could get a Phillips name plate.
Anyone have a link???
Signing with the Eagles is a fuck you to the team, not just following money. If he's mad, he's mad. We know how the Giants do business, and I know they were fair with him.
I also understand he just went to my most hated fucking team in the league.
business or not, he can go fuck himself from here on out. he's a cocksmoking eagle now
But that said, ill add to the chorus of FUCK YOU STEVE
- Smith detractor before it was fashionable
Ash, good to see you, dude.
Add to that for all the young talent at WR there is no one who has at this time what Smith brings to the game, consistent, reliable, ability to get open, who knows where the first down marker is...something I think Eli needs in a receiver as well...
Not the moves of a contender, nor what I expect of Reese.
Basically giving the Giants the finger.
And every Giants fan has a right to hate him for doing it.
I understand the guy needs money and business decisions do come into play, but he just tossed out his legacy for me. I won't remember him for the big year he had a year or so ago or the contributions towards the SB run (where he was not a main guy though).
To me, he'll be known as a traitor. And if he wins a SB ring with the Eagles, if I was the Giants, I'd never let him back for any of the former Giants things or the SB remembrance.
Whatever. There's a reason we play the games.
I think this Giants team is going to be better than a lot of people think. I also didn't expect much from Smith going forward this season. This doesn't really change things for me.
Played hardball with Bradshaw, got his guy at the price he wanted. Let Boss and smith walk for deals he wasn't willing to apparently match. And i agree with him on both fronts
Time will prove that this offseason was a very good one for him. But i expect it to get lost in the hysteria right now
Steve sold himself to a hated rival for peanuts, probably because he was insulted.
Fuck it. The tradeoff is we probably get to keep Manningham and Thomas.
Eric said this and i agree, this is a transition year..
I'm pretty excited about our team. The Prince injury was pretty disappointing, since I thought he'd be a big part of our D this season. That said, I feel pretty good about our squad and I'm excited to see Cruz get some snaps this year and our other young WR's get some opportunities.

Smith: "I'm pretty sure" Giants were able to match offer from Eagles.
gman, I was prepared for him to leave
but... The fucking eagles?????????? gahhhh
fuck him
if it was about loyalty or other things, wouldn't the Giants offered him a longer contract or more money? They mad a business decison. Smith made one too..
That said, I still like this team a lot when they're on the ropes.
And call me cynical but he wanted no part of battle with nicks or manningham cause he wouldn't win for the 1 or 2 postion. And it appears his pride wasn't going to let him accept 3rd wr non guaranteed money from the giants while believing he was a "true #1".
I also know this is not something that gets the team down, if anything it's a an even bigger motivation because they can play the "oh were not good enough card" which always works with NFL meatheads
we just need it to be 415 September 11th In fed ex field with Rex grossmen lined up under center.
The best thing to do is forget about this guy and root for the receivers we have...
...and relish the moment when we beat the fuck out of the Eagles.
As for the injuries, I don't worry about them unless they're big long-term blows. While Prince will be behind the curve when he gets back, I wouldn't be surprised if he gives our pass D a nice, big lift in the 2nd half/last quarter of the season.
Bring on week 3...If Vick goes down they are screwed...And then ALL that money is wasted...
Just the regular camp stuff
He was a good WR who had stats here the last couple years that he probably never would have seen on most other "good" teams, in part because he knew the offense much better than his physically more talented teammates.
they had money to blow and even if he doesn't see the field at all, it's still a gigantic 'HAHA fuck you guys' to the giants.
even he does somehow make it back and is effective? mothercuntfuck
The depth of this team has always worried me..I was always a get some vets to back up the starters guy..Now we're talking about Beckum being a contributer..
Guy can catch and run, we already know that, only question is blocking and he sounds like he's doing everything he can to become a good blocker.
Smith said he believes the Giants couldn't match the Eagles offer. #nyg
Reese has so much to allocate for each position and quite frankly Manningham has more upside than Smith. Manningham is a playmaker who can take it to the house while Smith is a move the chains receiver who runs great routes. In the long run Nicks and Manningham is scarrier duo than Nicks and Smith. You keep bringing in young talent to fill in that 3rd and 4th spot and keeping that cap number down.
Ernie Accorsi used to overpay his own free agents like Sehorn and Tiki and he put the Giants in cap hell. Jerry says no more. Boss and Smith aren't worth it and Bradshaw isn't worth megabucks either
Time to clean up
He's a phony. Fuck him.
It's very obvious that Banner and Roseman have bigger balls than Reese.
I think the Giants might've f***ked up on this one.
But let's not all forget what has gone on since. An 8-8 collapse in 2009, and last year, yes 10-6, however, plenty of cracks where showing. You add in the age on the OL and young veterans coming off injury concerns (Boss concussions, Smith knee, even Bradshaw's ankles/feet) and you see a game plan by Reese and the Giants ownership not to overpay to think that they can just recapture 2007 again.
While it sucks ass that Smith is going to Philly, it's a business. Steve Smith owes nothing to the fans or the Giants, he's out to make the most money he can. It is the way it works. But for the Giants, there are now so many moving parts throughout the offense. This team is looking like one that is going to take a few steps back to try to build up a new core and make another run. If they can gel by late in the season, there is no reason why it won't be this year. But if not, I wouldn't be stunned to see this team go 8-8 again, if not worse.
He's the definition of a phony.
He was looking to get paid and struck out. The Eagles obliged him with a "show me" flyer.
I'd rather have this now before the season with ample time to add and install new shit then later on. Let's see what Hixon, JJ, Cruz and Darius R. can do. Let's see who can step up from them.
Thanks for the memories Steve, now go fuck yourself right in the goat ass.
The Giants have never made excuses for not signing someone. If they don't want someone back at a certain price, they say so. They don't use injuries as a cause if it's not true.
I think they offered Smith a fair deal taking his injury into account, and he was looking for something more.
When he didn't get it, he figured he'd just focus on getting better for a season while having a chance to stick it to Reese.
We have two good ones, one who can't play a full 16 game schedule, and a bunch of question marks after that.
One injury to Manningham or Nicks and we're scary thin at receiver. Cruz has done nothing in the regular season, same for Barden, and Hixon is coming off of a knee injury
And i have never seen Mr. Jeff the eagles owner and Steve Serby togeather at the same time.
Get bent
The Giants seemed to show little interest in resigning Smith. Sure, they may have been interested enough to have him come back for a small salary, but Smith isn't obligated to accept that when there are other suitors. Particularly when one such suitor appears to be a contender this year and has apparently implied that they're open to playing Smith earlier than the other team has implied. Football players do like to play football, I'm thinking.
Also, how many receivers have the Giants drafted since Smith? At least 4 that I know of off the top of my head, two of whom have panned out likely beyond the Giants' expectations. Some of the free agent acquisitions we've signed have also shown a ton of promise, including one who was a highly-touted rookie but didn't really pan out at the shitty franchise he played for previously. I mean, at some point you just gotta think that Smith might be something of a casualty of the Giants' recent success scouting, drafting and signing at the position.
Who says he's telling the truth?
If the Giants give him 1 year, then NEXT year they're in a position where the have to pick between Thomas, Manningham, and Smith.
My guess is the Giants offered two years at less than 2 million for this coming singular season.
He got 4 m over 2 seasons, half guaranteed.
How much considerably less could the giants have possibly offered? Suddenly Reese makes insulting contract offers to his own successful draft picks?
I know we all loved Smith, but possession guys like him aren't that hard to find. Maybe not as good as him, but his production is replaceable. Looking forward to whoever can win that 3rd wr spot.
Still...what a fuckin kick in the balls
One side is wrong on the hypothetical they based part of their decision on. We just don't know which side yet.
I just can't see how anyone with a slightly functional imagination can put themselves in Smith's shoes and think, "Fuck all that, I'd stay with the GGGGGGGGGG-men!"
Better former Giants have left the team to go chase money when they felt disrespected.
now and he can play ST's
I hope Nicks and Manni step it up this season. I know my boy Nicks will bring it as long as he tucks away his cockiness at crunch time. Eli needs targets to throw to especially when September 25th rolls around.
Maybe he's making a shred more. There's almost certainly an ego element to this. It's been widely hinted that he was asking for quite a bit more than he ended up taking or the Giants were offering.
This may not be all bad. Only one year deal, hope he is not rushed to get on the field and cause more damage ( but feel this is what might happen... eagles will pressure him to play since this is a one year deal... no need to take it easy with him on a one year deal ).
Hope he takes their money and takes his time until he is health to play.
Once he sees how other organizations are, he may resign with Giants ( or he may not and return to west coast ).
How could he gauge who wanted him more. It doesn't even sound like anyone knew the Eagles were a possibility. I am really pissed at him and say FUCK him. I hope the Giants doctors were right and he is nowhere near ready to play effectively.
Very quantifiably, that's how.
2. You'd have to be high to think that the prospect of resigning Devin Thomas has anything to do with the offer made to Smith.
3. Some people here act as if they never took another job for more money. Maybe they haven't. If so, I feel sorry for them.
I don't know where they stand after this offseason but I doubt they're pushing the ceiling by any stretch. They're not handing out big contracts like candy. Jenkins and Asomugha are the contracts of significance they added.
As for blaming Smith for going to the Eagles, all I can say is that I worked for the same place for a very long time and considered myself a loyal employee. However, if somebody else offered me a million bucks more to work for them, I wouldn't even bother cleaning out my desk. I would be out of there so fast, I would leave skid marks.
Giants and eagles should be in the same cap situation next year ( this looks like a one year push to win a championship and if it does not pan out Reid may be gone and eagles will start over ).
Their defense is still pretty flawed though.
Some statistics (from 2009) re Smith, M'ham, Nicks:
Nicks: 10.8 y/a
M'ham: 8.3 y/a
Smith: 7.8 y/a
p.s. can we cut Hixon please...he makes me misspell Nicks?
Its a shame we can't allow the eagles fan site to sign some of these guys and get them off our board.
If Smith does start on time, or comes in after the 6th game, and is recovered, it will not look good,,,,
This is definitely a blow to the offense.....does this team look as strong as the one that started last year?
If Smith is succeeding but our WR's are as well, maybe this one of those things that worked out for all sides involved.
there is a chance here that Smith never gets a a big Pay Day so this may be his shot to make a few bucks.
Half of you would bitch if we signed him to a big contract and now your bitching he signed with the Eagles. I think he gave every opportunity to the Giants to resign him so I cant blame the guy for taking the money. Its a 1 year deal so he will be a FA again next season. If he barely plays this season he will get a low incentive contract next season until he gets back to a high level.
It sucks that he went to the Eagles but they were probably the ones ones willing to give him money. With the new CBA they are forced to spend a certain amount of money this season so they took a flyer on Smith and overpaid.
There is no blame to go around here it is just a bad situation what came about because of the rules of the game. If this was an uncapped year I am sure the Giants would have stepped up but you cant commit $2M to a guy who may play half a season when you have a tight cap.
Get over it guys.
