Steve Smith: Eagles wanted me MUCH more than NYG

jlukes : 8/10/2011 7:27 pm

Steve Smith
I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning...

I have a hard time he'll up his value down there this year
MetsAreBack : 8/10/2011 7:32 pm : link
Vick uses possession receivers how often? Ask guys like Celek how much fun they had last year.

Happy for him that he got himself $2 mm guaranteed, but I just dont see him getting a chance to showcase himself for a big payday next offseason. Not with DJax, McCoy, Maclin, Avant, Celek, R Brown, and a QB that loves to run, all in the mix.

But this is a serious kick in the fucking balls. For a guy who was posting pics of the empty Eagles trophy case not very long ago and saying that he wanted to stay a Giant so badly.. his actions sure spoke louder than words and he's just another guy who has proven that it's never about anything but the money.

I can't believe I'm saying this about a guy who was one of my favorite Giants... but fuck you, Steve.

You wanted the Eagles.

I won't root for Smith even if he goes to another team next season.

Steve Smith is dead to me.

This stinks to high heaven of a money grab which makes me wonder whether that knee is really ready or if Smith will ever be the same.

Giants must have gotten negative medical reports.
I see another Comp pick for the Giants$$$

with that one Greg, I hope we have better results than the last time the Eagles ran a crossing pattern near KP.
Why the hell wouldn't it be about the money?
andrew_nyg : 8/10/2011 7:37 pm : link
If you just rehabbed from an injury like this and you knew your future as a baller was in doubt, you're going to take the MOST guaranteed money you can...if you you don't you're a DUMBASS.

Even with their shopping spree, the Eagles were several more million UNDER the cap than the Giants...so they simply ACED the Giants with the extra room.

+2 to them if it works (+1 for getting him, +1 for taking him off the Giants)
Thank Heavens

Why is everybody pissed with SS. He had every right to take the deal. It's not like the Giants matched and he walked, or took care of him after his record breaking season. It's a business both ways.
Can someone please

I think it was a confluence of things.

Knee injuries are pretty detrimental to any athlete, and to WRs they tend to level a good impact (and never positively).

I do think the Giants are being careful with their money and cap situation. They're going to want to lock up guys like Thomas and Manningham I would think and maybe look at a few other FAs as well.

We agree, there's something about this team in recent seasons that this indicates to me they were ready to shake things up in terms of personnel. Lock up the indentified healthy core, continue to build via the draft, and go for UFA when it presents itself.

Ash, good to see you, dude.

If you vision yourself as a playoff contender
Defenderdawg : 8/10/2011 7:46 pm : link
to leave yourself without a TE, let's face it Pascoe is a street FA, Ballard a UDFA and Beckum a specialist...is inexcusable.

Add to that for all the young talent at WR there is no one who has at this time what Smith brings to the game, consistent, reliable, ability to get open, who knows where the first down marker is...something I think Eli needs in a receiver as well...

Not the moves of a contender, nor what I expect of Reese.

has every right to take the deal.

And every Giants fan has a right to hate him for doing it.

I understand the guy needs money and business decisions do come into play, but he just tossed out his legacy for me. I won't remember him for the big year he had a year or so ago or the contributions towards the SB run (where he was not a main guy though).

To me, he'll be known as a traitor. And if he wins a SB ring with the Eagles, if I was the Giants, I'd never let him back for any of the former Giants things or the SB remembrance.

I love Jerry Reese
MarshallOnMontana : 8/10/2011 7:47 pm : link
more this year than i ever have. He's not a fan. Hes a clear thinker who assigns a value to a player and won't budge on it just to appease fans who are pissed that one of their jerseys is not outdated

Played hardball with Bradshaw, got his guy at the price he wanted. Let Boss and smith walk for deals he wasn't willing to apparently match. And i agree with him on both fronts

Time will prove that this offseason was a very good one for him. But i expect it to get lost in the hysteria right now

It may be better longer term, but right now we're toaling too many players in a short period trying to acclimated to a new system..And with all the injuries this team is compounding..

He is and was a legend but..
BigBluesince1983 : 8/10/2011 7:54 pm : link
In business and life there is no bigger mistake than doing something that you do not believe in for the sake of other people doing something. That has been the Reese mantra from day one and I agree with it 100%.

And call me cynical but he wanted no part of battle with nicks or manningham cause he wouldn't win for the 1 or 2 postion. And it appears his pride wasn't going to let him accept 3rd wr non guaranteed money from the giants while believing he was a "true #1".

I also know this is not something that gets the team down, if anything it's a an even bigger motivation because they can play the "oh were not good enough card" which always works with NFL meatheads

we just need it to be 415 September 11th In fed ex field with Rex grossmen lined up under center.

I never even bother resigning his slow ass in Madden. I always ended up re-upping Manningham over him. In all seriousness someone will fill his role and maybe he comes back after his 1yr deal is up.
The point about the
Ash : 8/10/2011 7:56 pm : link
acclimation to the system and all that is sound, yet that's happening with basically every team in the NFL.

As for the injuries, I don't worry about them unless they're big long-term blows. While Prince will be behind the curve when he gets back, I wouldn't be surprised if he gives our pass D a nice, big lift in the 2nd half/last quarter of the season.

Jerry Reese is following the Eagles model
Larry in Pencilvania : 8/10/2011 8:05 pm : link
He is not overpaying for his own free agents. The Eagles are taking the injured veteran. If Smith's knee was so solid they would have given him a two year deal. Smith may not get another contract after this if he can't come back.

Reese has so much to allocate for each position and quite frankly Manningham has more upside than Smith. Manningham is a playmaker who can take it to the house while Smith is a move the chains receiver who runs great routes. In the long run Nicks and Manningham is scarrier duo than Nicks and Smith. You keep bringing in young talent to fill in that 3rd and 4th spot and keeping that cap number down.

Ernie Accorsi used to overpay his own free agents like Sehorn and Tiki and he put the Giants in cap hell. Jerry says no more. Boss and Smith aren't worth it and Bradshaw isn't worth megabucks either

Matt in SGS : 8/10/2011 8:13 pm : link
you are 100% correct. The Giants right now are realizing that the core of the 2007 championship team, for the most part, has taken this team as far as it could have gone and it was time for change. They had a damn good run for a while, up through the 2008 team, which for a short time seemed like it could have even been a better team than the 1986 Giants until the roof caved in.

But let's not all forget what has gone on since. An 8-8 collapse in 2009, and last year, yes 10-6, however, plenty of cracks where showing. You add in the age on the OL and young veterans coming off injury concerns (Boss concussions, Smith knee, even Bradshaw's ankles/feet) and you see a game plan by Reese and the Giants ownership not to overpay to think that they can just recapture 2007 again.

While it sucks ass that Smith is going to Philly, it's a business. Steve Smith owes nothing to the fans or the Giants, he's out to make the most money he can. It is the way it works. But for the Giants, there are now so many moving parts throughout the offense. This team is looking like one that is going to take a few steps back to try to build up a new core and make another run. If they can gel by late in the season, there is no reason why it won't be this year. But if not, I wouldn't be stunned to see this team go 8-8 again, if not worse.

The Giants don't have a habit of lowballing their own guys.

He was looking to get paid and struck out. The Eagles obliged him with a "show me" flyer.
Micko
Matt in SGS : 8/10/2011 8:18 pm : link
low balling could well be correct. I think it's more of an issue that the Giants looked at Smith with his knee problems and the fact that Manningham is going to be needing a new deal, and the decision was to not spend on Smith and save for Manningham. Smith was in line for a new deal for a long time and he got hosed by the CBA problems because the Giants were able to wait it out and then he hurt his knee. It's just an unfortunate situation for the Giants and Smith because it wasn't going to work out. Nicks is a keeper, he's getting his money. It was always Smith vs. Manningham for the next bigger money deal. It was a sound business decision by the Giants. Sucks, but sound. And let's see how much he contributes in Philly before we go nuts. The Eagles could well be banking on the fact that they expect to be a high seed in the playoffs and want Smith there for the stretch run and the playoffs so they'll wait him out. The Giants don't have that luxury.
This ain't going to be an 8-8 season.

I don't pay attention to that Facebook nonsense. I've met enough players, both former and current, to know that they generally play up to the fans as much as they can, and when they change cities, they change to suit the fans. Like most guys, Smith has a PR team of his own, setting up his appearances, endorsements, etc. Social Media is one of them, and now he's going to play up to the Philly group. I know for a fact that most PR guys sweat out twitter/facebook, etc. because giving these guys unfiltered access to fans is a nightmare for them to help play to an image they are trying to create or maintain. If he's a phony, so be it.

We don't know the answer to those questions.

That's what doesn't make sense here.

The Giants have never made excuses for not signing someone. If they don't want someone back at a certain price, they say so. They don't use injuries as a cause if it's not true.

I think they offered Smith a fair deal taking his injury into account, and he was looking for something more.

When he didn't get it, he figured he'd just focus on getting better for a season while having a chance to stick it to Reese.

But holy shit do some fans have senses of entitlement!

The Giants seemed to show little interest in resigning Smith. Sure, they may have been interested enough to have him come back for a small salary, but Smith isn't obligated to accept that when there are other suitors. Particularly when one such suitor appears to be a contender this year and has apparently implied that they're open to playing Smith earlier than the other team has implied. Football players do like to play football, I'm thinking.

Also, how many receivers have the Giants drafted since Smith? At least 4 that I know of off the top of my head, two of whom have panned out likely beyond the Giants' expectations. Some of the free agent acquisitions we've signed have also shown a ton of promise, including one who was a highly-touted rookie but didn't really pan out at the shitty franchise he played for previously. I mean, at some point you just gotta think that Smith might be something of a casualty of the Giants' recent success scouting, drafting and signing at the position.

The Giants weren't really so interested in resigning Smith that they were willing to pay him good money *and* put up with what they believed would be a fairly considerable lay off, and Smith wasn't really so interested in taking less money to play for a team that didn't believe he'd be ready to play for a while.

If the Giants medical reports are right, and they have the best medical people, Smith will take most of this year to get better. Paying him on a one year contract means you are paying him to rehab and hold a roster spot. Then, next year, he leaves for a bog contract someplace else. Steve Smith was a free agent and there was no guarantee that he was coming back. Why are so many people freaking out? Just like with Plax, the Giants offered Smith what they were willing to risk. The Giants know his medical report better than anybody and they obviously aren't confident that he will be as good as he was. I hoped Smith would be back, but let's face it...Manningham is the #2. Call me crazy, but I think Cruz or Jernigan can be MUCH more explosive in the slot at this point. Gotta move on.

Giants would not sign him and urged him to retire so he would not do more damage to his knees, but he took eagles money but was not the same player, and may still need knee(s) replaced as he ages ( hope not ).

This may not be all bad. Only one year deal, hope he is not rushed to get on the field and cause more damage ( but feel this is what might happen... eagles will pressure him to play since this is a one year deal... no need to take it easy with him on a one year deal ).

Hope he takes their money and takes his time until he is health to play.

Once he sees how other organizations are, he may resign with Giants ( or he may not and return to west coast ).
I think he's full of shit.

I posted on another thread about this first. I am just reading about this now, so I haven't even seen everything yet. But, I think he is full of it. The Giants have never expressed anything but interest. But, I think they made other players a priority because they were needed more immediately and Smith would not be ready for the start of the season, in their estimation. I would venture to guess their recent restructures were done with the intent on signing him.

How could he gauge who wanted him more. It doesn't even sound like anyone knew the Eagles were a possibility. I am really pissed at him and say FUCK him. I hope the Giants doctors were right and he is nowhere near ready to play effectively.

When I said he can't gauge who wanted him more, I meant without informing the Giants there was another offer on the table, he doesn't know if the Giants would have offered more.
You would never, EVER, see Brandon Jacobs

speechless at this news. I think Reese needs to clear up a few items about how this happened b/c right now it simply looks like he's totally fucked up this offseason. You have got to be kidding me with this shit. Can't believe we're going to be watching #12 in green. Ugh.
What did he fuck up, Josh?

Where is Fast Eddie When I need him!!

Hey Eddie, we again got cheap and now have lost SS. If SS comes back strong as the Eagles say, than our coach and GM have to go.I just wonder how long our country, gee golly, QB will last this season with the receivers and offensive line we have.Management has failed miserably and like I said last week , they have no clue on managing the cap. And oh yea, the OSI saga still is going on and festering. I for one don't want the baseball season to end. The press and media will be all in GREEN this football season!!

hmm lets see. Our salary cap was a fucking mess coming into this offseason. We lost both of Eli's 3rd down security blankets (Boss & Smith). We couldn't outbid the Jets (who were the 2nd highest team over the cap behind Dallas) for Plax. We were forced to cut two o-line starters, one who which was probably our best o-lineman last season. We signed an average Center, David Baas, to a contract that almost nobody else in the NFL thought he was worth. Need I go on or are you just wearing your homerism goggles tonight?
the same old shit

the negative posters on this site are out in force now. This might be a great move by the Giants. Only time will tell. The Giants have read the X-rays and MRIs. No one here has. But Jerry is an idiot and the world is ending.

Its a shame we can't allow the eagles fan site to sign some of these guys and get them off our board.

YOU sound like the idiot. It's a one year deal with $2mm guaranteed. You don't let a player like Smith go to your biggest rival without even giving him a chance to prove he could be the same player. He's Eli's favorite WR when healthy and to just give him away for basically nothing is an absolute joke. Players come back from injuries like this all the time now. To let him walk on a one year contract is a total travesty and Reese & Co. totally screwed this up.
I will take that as a compliment

when we hadn't signed AB, Boss, and Smith right away, that we were probably going to lose one....when we lost Boss, I thought it gave us extra money for Smith.....but then the negotiations dragged on....Smith gave them over 100 receptions on a rookie contract.....guess he felt he was owed some recognition for that in a one year contract....thought they would give him a one year performance deal, with a bonus....But Reese played hardball with the wrong guys.....he has some expalining to do on his contract offers(Bass vs Smith/Boss) and also how he has managed the cap....

If Smith does start on time, or comes in after the 6th game, and is recovered, it will not look good,,,,

This is definitely a blow to the offense.....does this team look as strong as the one that started last year?
I agree that it won't look good
santacruzom : 8/10/2011 11:03 pm : link
If Smith comes back before week six or so... But ONLY if he's producing like crazy and is an asset to a winning Eagles team while we're playing .50 ball or worse with an anemic passing game.

If Smith is succeeding but our WR's are as well, maybe this one of those things that worked out for all sides involved.
Hey guys
yankfan : 8/10/2011 11:06 pm : link
and gals, it's ALWAYS about the money. Players, teams, league......everything. It's a money driven game. I'm an old-school guy, and I miss the days when players stayed in the same place year after year. That said though, I realize that things had to change for the players to get a bigger piece of the pie. Losing Smith sucks, but in the end maybe someone better will come along.
how can you guys blame Smith for this?
Rudy57 : 8/11/2011 12:45 pm : link
I say good luck to him. the man is coming off a serious injury and one team was willing to give him a guaranteed $2M while the Giants were probably offering a league min or close to it with incentives.

there is a chance here that Smith never gets a a big Pay Day so this may be his shot to make a few bucks.

Half of you would bitch if we signed him to a big contract and now your bitching he signed with the Eagles. I think he gave every opportunity to the Giants to resign him so I cant blame the guy for taking the money. Its a 1 year deal so he will be a FA again next season. If he barely plays this season he will get a low incentive contract next season until he gets back to a high level.

It sucks that he went to the Eagles but they were probably the ones ones willing to give him money. With the new CBA they are forced to spend a certain amount of money this season so they took a flyer on Smith and overpaid.

There is no blame to go around here it is just a bad situation what came about because of the rules of the game. If this was an uncapped year I am sure the Giants would have stepped up but you cant commit $2M to a guy who may play half a season when you have a tight cap.

Get over it guys.
