Steve Smith
I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning...

acclimation to the system and all that is sound, yet that's happening with basically every team in the NFL.

As for the injuries, I don't worry about them unless they're big long-term blows. While Prince will be behind the curve when he gets back, I wouldn't be surprised if he gives our pass D a nice, big lift in the 2nd half/last quarter of the season.
This guy is a fucking joke...
Gmen 4 life : 8/10/2011 7:56 pm : link
I don't know whats more suprising, That we bought all of his bullshit, or that he was actually this full of shit..Vick, Jackson, and Smith can all go to hell.

Bring on week 3...If Vick goes down they are screwed...And then ALL that money is wasted...

SanFranGiantsFan : 8/10/2011 7:57 pm : link
I will give up my entire September salary for us kicking the Eagles ass on 9/25, capped by Mario flapping his wings after another TD. Must beat Eagles. There is no alternative.
we really don't have bad injuries right now

at all save for prince.

Just the regular camp stuff

Meltzer.
I liked Smith a lot when he was here, but "was and is a legend"?
Riggies : 8/10/2011 7:58 pm : link
No, not even close.

He was a good WR who had stats here the last couple years that he probably never would have seen on most other "good" teams, in part because he knew the offense much better than his physically more talented teammates.
Anybody Know Jeff Gillooly's number?
mjt832 : 8/10/2011 7:58 pm : link
It's time for another gig. Maybe he needs the money.
on a more serious note
GMenLTS : 8/10/2011 7:58 pm : link
this was a no brainer for the eagles

they had money to blow and even if he doesn't see the field at all, it's still a gigantic 'HAHA fuck you guys' to the giants.

even he does somehow make it back and is effective? mothercuntfuck

I'm talking about guys who made need to contribute early like a Beatty, Barden and others..They need Ross to be healthy because of Prince.

The depth of this team has always worried me..I was always a get some vets to back up the starters guy..Now we're talking about Beckum being a contributer..
riggies..in my book his 4 playoff games in 2007

earn him "legend" status, the same scott brosious is a "legend". just my view and see your point on him not being a true legend like carson, lt, simms etc etc

hixon by all accounts is fully healthy, just taking precautionary days off. Ross is healthy. And our young CB depth guys appear to be having good camps.

no problem with this. Football is a short career. The Giants obviously think the injury is worse than the Eagles do. Smith took the better offer.

we trust our drafting, that is what it is for better or worse.

Guy can catch and run, we already know that, only question is blocking and he sounds like he's doing everything he can to become a good blocker.

Jerry Reese is following the Eagles model
Larry in Pencilvania : 8/10/2011 8:05 pm : link
He is not overpaying for his own free agents. The Eagles are taking the injured veteran. If Smith's knee was so solid they would have given him a two year deal. Smith may not get another contract after this if he can't come back.

Reese has so much to allocate for each position and quite frankly Manningham has more upside than Smith. Manningham is a playmaker who can take it to the house while Smith is a move the chains receiver who runs great routes. In the long run Nicks and Manningham is scarrier duo than Nicks and Smith. You keep bringing in young talent to fill in that 3rd and 4th spot and keeping that cap number down.

Ernie Accorsi used to overpay his own free agents like Sehorn and Tiki and he put the Giants in cap hell. Jerry says no more. Boss and Smith aren't worth it and Bradshaw isn't worth megabucks either

Time to clean up

calling out a guy and disagreeing with him, then doing exactly what he disagreed with.

He's a phony. Fuck him.

Quote:
I disagree with this comment: Tom Jones: Do you all honestly think that your pleas to keep him here in NY are going to be good for anything? If that were the case we wouldn't have lost Boss, and Steve wouldn't be sitting here saying things like this. The players don't play for the game anymore, they play for the paycheck. Where they get it from, they don't care. Move on Steve...move on.
Could the reason they let Smith go be?

. I forgot about that post. I thought Smith was genuine when he pretended that he was a NY Giant forever, and that he only wanted to stay in NY. He was a fake.
.....
Micko : 8/10/2011 8:12 pm : link
The responses by so many here are pretty disgusting. The Giants low-balled him. He wanted to be a Giant and they low-balled him to the point where the Eagles came in a got him for a fair price. This one is on the Giants, not on Steve Smith. How can anyone blame him?
If Jerry Reese is following the Eagles model...
Giants11737 : 8/10/2011 8:12 pm : link
why the hell the did the Eagles take him?

It's very obvious that Banner and Roseman have bigger balls than Reese.

I think the Giants might've f***ked up on this one.
Larry
Matt in SGS : 8/10/2011 8:13 pm : link
you are 100% correct. The Giants right now are realizing that the core of the 2007 championship team, for the most part, has taken this team as far as it could have gone and it was time for change. They had a damn good run for a while, up through the 2008 team, which for a short time seemed like it could have even been a better team than the 1986 Giants until the roof caved in.

But let's not all forget what has gone on since. An 8-8 collapse in 2009, and last year, yes 10-6, however, plenty of cracks where showing. You add in the age on the OL and young veterans coming off injury concerns (Boss concussions, Smith knee, even Bradshaw's ankles/feet) and you see a game plan by Reese and the Giants ownership not to overpay to think that they can just recapture 2007 again.

While it sucks ass that Smith is going to Philly, it's a business. Steve Smith owes nothing to the fans or the Giants, he's out to make the most money he can. It is the way it works. But for the Giants, there are now so many moving parts throughout the offense. This team is looking like one that is going to take a few steps back to try to build up a new core and make another run. If they can gel by late in the season, there is no reason why it won't be this year. But if not, I wouldn't be stunned to see this team go 8-8 again, if not worse.
LOL check out this post
halfback20 : 8/10/2011 8:13 pm : link
on Smiths' wall.

Quote:
As much as the Giants front office is to blame for letting Steve Smith go, I put a ton of blame on Eli Manning. Brandon Jacobs took a pay cut to bring back Ahmad Bradshaw. If Eli Manning cared THAT much about Steve Smith, then he would have done the right thing and take care of his most reliable WR.
.....
Micko : 8/10/2011 8:14 pm : link
Say what you want. This guy had a 100 catch season. That's the only time a Giants WR has done that in my lifetime and I'm not young. That shit isn't just random.
.....
Micko : 8/10/2011 8:16 pm : link
I know we're all polyannas here but keep this in mind. Hixon is currently our 3rd WR. Hixon! Let's hope Cruz is the real deal.
Matt
MookGiants : 8/10/2011 8:16 pm : link
I am fine with it being a business, but when he calls a fan out on facebook and then does EXACTLY what the fan said, he's a fucking phony. He has acted like a fucking 10 year old on facebook for a couple years now and I hope he gets absolutely torn to shreds for being a complete phony. No one made him say the stuff he did on facebook, no camera was on him, no microphone in front of his face.

He's the definition of a phony.

An 8-8 season with Eli & Tuck in their primes makes me nauseous.
How does anyone know the Giants lowballed him?
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 8:18 pm : link
The Giants don't have a habit of lowballing their own guys.

He was looking to get paid and struck out. The Eagles obliged him with a "show me" flyer.
Micko
Matt in SGS : 8/10/2011 8:18 pm : link
low balling could well be correct. I think it's more of an issue that the Giants looked at Smith with his knee problems and the fact that Manningham is going to be needing a new deal, and the decision was to not spend on Smith and save for Manningham. Smith was in line for a new deal for a long time and he got hosed by the CBA problems because the Giants were able to wait it out and then he hurt his knee. It's just an unfortunate situation for the Giants and Smith because it wasn't going to work out. Nicks is a keeper, he's getting his money. It was always Smith vs. Manningham for the next bigger money deal. It was a sound business decision by the Giants. Sucks, but sound. And let's see how much he contributes in Philly before we go nuts. The Eagles could well be banking on the fact that they expect to be a high seed in the playoffs and want Smith there for the stretch run and the playoffs so they'll wait him out. The Giants don't have that luxury.
This ain't going to be an 8-8 season.

Hopefully now the offensive coaches can meet up and decide schematically how they want to adjust.

I'd rather have this now before the season with ample time to add and install new shit then later on. Let's see what Hixon, JJ, Cruz and Darius R. can do. Let's see who can step up from them.
Matt
MookGiants : 8/10/2011 8:19 pm : link
if it's a 1 year deal, how exactly would you be saving money for manningham who isn't a free agent until next off-season?
I don't begrudge Smith for taking the best offer...
Blue21 : 8/10/2011 8:21 pm : link
but I don't blame Reese either.
8-8
MookGiants : 8/10/2011 8:21 pm : link
most certainly is not out of the question. I think this teams floor is 7-9, ceiling is 11-5. Anywhere in between would not shock me, but the botom line is this team did absolutely nothing to get better from last year
Dave
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 8:21 pm : link
Or they offered him a two-year deal as they did with Kiwanuka, and Smith probably decided to take a flyer for $2m just for rehabbing, then test Free Agency and make real money.
