Steve Smith
I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning...

the only reason I can see is that the Giants don't think Smith is ever going to be the same, otherwise they would have stuck with him.

I agree with you. This was likely as much about Manningham as it was about Smith.

Possible, but I doubt the Giants offerd Smith a 2 year deal when the Giants doctors feel Smith will be out for the "long haul" as TC said yesterday.

I don't pay attention to that Facebook nonsense. I've met enough players, both former and current, to know that they generally play up to the fans as much as they can, and when they change cities, they change to suit the fans. Like most guys, Smith has a PR team of his own, setting up his appearances, endorsements, etc. Social Media is one of them, and now he's going to play up to the Philly group. I know for a fact that most PR guys sweat out twitter/facebook, etc. because giving these guys unfiltered access to fans is a nightmare for them to help play to an image they are trying to create or maintain. If he's a phony, so be it.
Steve Smith was

a luxury with question marks that we simply couldn't afford to gamble on--especially when we're stacked at WR.

I get that it's a business and he needed a J-O-B

I just don't have to like it.

Thanks for the memories Steve, now go fuck yourself right in the goat ass.

Randy how are we stacked?

let's see if the Giants sign Manningham to an extension in season and that is where the money is allocated. And was he willing to play for a 1 year deal with the Giants or did he want 2 years if he was going to accept less money in 2011 provided he got more in 2012. We don't know the answer to those questions.
Matt
MookGiants : 8/10/2011 8:26 pm : link
the issue is Smith calling out this guy for saying it. No one would have seen what the guy said, unless he called them out on it and said he disagreed. He wanted to show the fans that he was different, not like the others, and then he did exactly what he said he disagreed with.

We're not stacked at WR.
Riggies : 8/10/2011 8:26 pm : link
We have two very good starters and depth, if they all stay healthy enough, that a good QB can win with -- and that's a fine place for this or any team to be.
Dave
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 8:27 pm : link
That's what doesn't make sense here.

The Giants have never made excuses for not signing someone. If they don't want someone back at a certain price, they say so. They don't use injuries as a cause if it's not true.

I think they offered Smith a fair deal taking his injury into account, and he was looking for something more.

When he didn't get it, he figured he'd just focus on getting better for a season while having a chance to stick it to Reese.

MookGiants : 8/10/2011 8:28 pm : link
are we stacked at WR?

We have two good ones, one who can't play a full 16 game schedule, and a bunch of question marks after that.

One injury to Manningham or Nicks and we're scary thin at receiver. Cruz has done nothing in the regular season, same for Barden, and Hixon is coming off of a knee injury
well maybe
Yalebowl_Ribs : 8/10/2011 8:28 pm : link
the giants can return the favor and win both games and knock the birds out of the playoff nest this year , leaving Mr. Jeffs case empty once again. you know I like the sound of Mr. Jeff.
And i have never seen Mr. Jeff the eagles owner and Steve Serby togeather at the same time.

If the Giants offered just as much as the Eagles, he would have signed with thr Giants. This was his first choice. He said the Eagles have been in on him for weeks. He gave the Giants every opportunity to sign him, but they made him an offer that wasn't as good as the Eagles, obviously.
F you, Steve

santacruzom : 8/10/2011 8:33 pm : link
But holy shit do some fans have senses of entitlement!

The Giants seemed to show little interest in resigning Smith. Sure, they may have been interested enough to have him come back for a small salary, but Smith isn't obligated to accept that when there are other suitors. Particularly when one such suitor appears to be a contender this year and has apparently implied that they're open to playing Smith earlier than the other team has implied. Football players do like to play football, I'm thinking.

Also, how many receivers have the Giants drafted since Smith? At least 4 that I know of off the top of my head, two of whom have panned out likely beyond the Giants' expectations. Some of the free agent acquisitions we've signed have also shown a ton of promise, including one who was a highly-touted rookie but didn't really pan out at the shitty franchise he played for previously. I mean, at some point you just gotta think that Smith might be something of a casualty of the Giants' recent success scouting, drafting and signing at the position.

I will always remember he was on his way to Hall Of Fame career in San Diego 1st 3 years 199 Rec, 3000+ yds took the money and went to Green Bay in 5 years 75 Rec, 2283 yds the rest is just a very sad story.
I've been convinced this off-season that the only way SS
glowrider : 8/10/2011 8:40 pm : link
was coming back was if he took minimum $$$. The organization is going to have to sign both Nicks and Manningham to long-term deals soon. With his knee, it's a no brainer. Can't invest top $ for three players at one position.
Does Smith's signing impact DSJ's negotiations with the Iggles?
BlueLou : 8/10/2011 8:41 pm : link
Tighten the screws on him?

Who says he's telling the truth?

If the Giants give him 1 year, then NEXT year they're in a position where the have to pick between Thomas, Manningham, and Smith.

My guess is the Giants offered two years at less than 2 million for this coming singular season.
The only way Smith gets up
Dave in Hoboken : 8/10/2011 8:44 pm : link
and walks away from the Giants and goes to the Eagles is if the Giants offered considerably less. The Giants don't think he'll be ready to play anytime soon, but they're going to offer him a 2 year contract? That makes no sense.

So Barden, Thomas, Calhoun, Cruz and Jeringan will all now fight to become Eli new security blanket.
Dave
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 8:46 pm : link
Veteran minimum is 625k.

He got 4 m over 2 seasons, half guaranteed.

How much considerably less could the giants have possibly offered? Suddenly Reese makes insulting contract offers to his own successful draft picks?
This deal makes no sense
Jim in Forest Hills : 8/10/2011 8:46 pm : link
for the Eagles unless perhaps they think Maclin is done for the year?

I know we all loved Smith, but possession guys like him aren't that hard to find. Maybe not as good as him, but his production is replaceable. Looking forward to whoever can win that 3rd wr spot.
He has more value to the Eagle because of the PLAYBOOK
AnnapolisMike : 8/10/2011 8:49 pm : link
The Giants are not going to ignore the medical staff opinion. The choice between MM and SS just got easier.

Still...what a fuckin kick in the balls
it's pretty simple to me:
santacruzom : 8/10/2011 8:50 pm : link
The Giants weren't really so interested in resigning Smith that they were willing to pay him good money *and* put up with what they believed would be a fairly considerable lay off, and Smith wasn't really so interested in taking less money to play for a team that didn't believe he'd be ready to play for a while.

One side is wrong on the hypothetical they based part of their decision on. We just don't know which side yet.
TTH, apparently
Dave in Hoboken : 8/10/2011 8:51 pm : link
if they have knee injuries and the doctors are telling them he won't be ready for quite some time. He wasn't going to go to Philly if they offered the same amount.
also
santacruzom : 8/10/2011 8:54 pm : link
we can't act like the difference between, say, a $1 million offer and a $4 million one -- of which half is guaranteed -- is just some negligible thing that's the equivalent of Amazon throwing in free shipping or some shit. The goes double if one deal is a one-year contract and the other, well, isn't.

I just can't see how anyone with a slightly functional imagination can put themselves in Smith's shoes and think, "Fuck all that, I'd stay with the GGGGGGGGGG-men!"
This is like when Plaxico
Reb8thVA : 8/10/2011 8:55 pm : link
shot himself and everyone was proclaiming Hixon the next Jerry Rice and that the offense would not skip a beat. We know how well that worked out! You really won't know how much this offense will miss Smith
What are you basing that on? He'd never have gone to philly?
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 8:55 pm : link
It's foolish to ever assume an athlete has loyalty to anything more than his family and his paycheck. I don't care what he posts on facebook.

Better former Giants have left the team to go chase money when they felt disrespected.
Jernigan and Cruz

Not a One Year Deal
Samiam : 8/10/2011 8:57 pm : link
If the Giants medical reports are right, and they have the best medical people, Smith will take most of this year to get better. Paying him on a one year contract means you are paying him to rehab and hold a roster spot. Then, next year, he leaves for a bog contract someplace else. You still have to sign Nicks and MM so maybe Reese knows what he's doing and maybe, just maybe, he knows a little more than we do.
Oh come on
Dave in Hoboken : 8/10/2011 8:57 pm : link
The only way he was going to Philly if they offered him more money. Which they did. If the Giants offerd him more or even the same, he would have stayed.
this is also like when Plaxico shot himself
santacruzom : 8/10/2011 8:57 pm : link
and everyone was like, "Who've we got? A rookie? A 2nd year guy who owed points on his Wonderlic? Steve Smith??"
This makes me hate the Iggles even more
John Outofstate : 8/10/2011 9:01 pm : link
Goddamn those bums!!!!

I hope Nicks and Manni step it up this season. I know my boy Nicks will bring it as long as he tucks away his cockiness at crunch time. Eli needs targets to throw to especially when September 25th rolls around.
Dave
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 9:02 pm : link
Well consider what he actually got. If you really believe he was offered significantly less than that, then you already have a bad opinion of how the team does business.

Maybe he's making a shred more. There's almost certainly an ego element to this. It's been widely hinted that he was asking for quite a bit more than he ended up taking or the Giants were offering.
Relax
GiantJake : 8/10/2011 9:03 pm : link
Steve Smith was a free agent and there was no guarantee that he was coming back. Why are so many people freaking out? Just like with Plax, the Giants offered Smith what they were willing to risk. The Giants know his medical report better than anybody and they obviously aren't confident that he will be as good as he was. I hoped Smith would be back, but let's face it...Manningham is the #2. Call me crazy, but I think Cruz or Jernigan can be MUCH more explosive in the slot at this point. Gotta move on.
Smith said earlier
Dave in Hoboken : 8/10/2011 9:05 pm : link
that the Eagles paid him a considerable amount more. I see no reason he would lie about that.
Similar to when Bavaro signed with eagles
jwowcm : 8/10/2011 9:05 pm : link
Giants would not sign him and urged him to retire so he would not do more damage to his knees, but he took eagles money but was not the same player, and may still need knee(s) replaced as he ages ( hope not ).

This may not be all bad. Only one year deal, hope he is not rushed to get on the field and cause more damage ( but feel this is what might happen... eagles will pressure him to play since this is a one year deal... no need to take it easy with him on a one year deal ).

Hope he takes their money and takes his time until he is health to play.

Once he sees how other organizations are, he may resign with Giants ( or he may not and return to west coast ).
I think he's full of shit.
Matt M. : 8/10/2011 9:07 pm : link
I posted on another thread about this first. I am just reading about this now, so I haven't even seen everything yet. But, I think he is full of it. The Giants have never expressed anything but interest. But, I think they made other players a priority because they were needed more immediately and Smith would not be ready for the start of the season, in their estimation. I would venture to guess their recent restructures were done with the intent on signing him.

How could he gauge who wanted him more. It doesn't even sound like anyone knew the Eagles were a possibility. I am really pissed at him and say FUCK him. I hope the Giants doctors were right and he is nowhere near ready to play effectively.
Cotchery?
Matt M. : 8/10/2011 9:07 pm : link
Is he a possibility now?
"considerable" being a subjective term.

Very quantifiably, that's how.
actually, he said "much more."
Dave in Hoboken : 8/10/2011 9:10 pm : link
And how? Well, I don't see why any team would offer him 2 million guranteed (4 million overall) if they didn't think he could contribute most of the season. $2 million is peanuts in todays NFL.
1 year/4m is a flyer.
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 9:16 pm : link
Nobody was beating down Smith's door with offers. If the Eagles felt like they "knew something", they'd have given a 25 year old pro bowl talent a real contract.

1. What's the over/under on Manning's interception total this year? Let's be real...Smith made him look good.

2. You'd have to be high to think that the prospect of resigning Devin Thomas has anything to do with the offer made to Smith.

3. Some people here act as if they never took another job for more money. Maybe they haven't. If so, I feel sorry for them.
