Steve Smith
I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning...

Eh.

The Eagles are always way under cap. They've always relied on keeping a ton of unused cap-room.

I don't know where they stand after this offseason but I doubt they're pushing the ceiling by any stretch. They're not handing out big contracts like candy. Jenkins and Asomugha are the contracts of significance they added.

what makes this different is the way Steve Smith acted like he was always a Giant. He was a phony the whole time and we all, or most of us at least, fell for it. I never imagined he'd sign with another team, much less the Eagles.
Devin Thomas?
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/10/2011 9:22 pm : link
I'm talking about Terrell Thomas.
The Giants are in a better position to know how valuable Smith is than

I am. So I'll wait and see how well Smith does this year before I blame the Giants.

As for blaming Smith for going to the Eagles, all I can say is that I worked for the same place for a very long time and considered myself a loyal employee. However, if somebody else offered me a million bucks more to work for them, I wouldn't even bother cleaning out my desk. I would be out of there so fast, I would leave skid marks.
That's all well and good

but Jackson and Maclin's contracts will be fairly large contracts.
eagles' cap next year takes a BIG hit as
jwowcm : 8/10/2011 9:26 pm : link
reported on NFL Network... this years signings did not impact the cap but the 2nd year of this years contracts are going to eat up eagles cap.

Giants and eagles should be in the same cap situation next year ( this looks like a one year push to win a championship and if it does not pan out Reid may be gone and eagles will start over ).
Reid might never be gone

but this is definitely an all-or nothing year considering the growing frustration over there.

Their defense is still pretty flawed though.

gotcha. mentioning Thomas in the same breath with other WRs threw me off.

Some statistics (from 2009) re Smith, M'ham, Nicks:

Nicks: 10.8 y/a
M'ham: 8.3 y/a
Smith: 7.8 y/a

p.s. can we cut Hixon please...he makes me misspell Nicks?

When I said he can't gauge who wanted him more, I meant without informing the Giants there was another offer on the table, he doesn't know if the Giants would have offered more.
You would never, EVER, see Brandon Jacobs

play for the Eagles. He's a true Giant. Suck a dick Steve, you fucking pussy! I really hope his knee is in pain and he fucking tears it all.

speechless at this news. I think Reese needs to clear up a few items about how this happened b/c right now it simply looks like he's totally fucked up this offseason. You have got to be kidding me with this shit. Can't believe we're going to be watching #12 in green. Ugh.
What did he fuck up, Josh?

Where is Fast Eddie When I need him!!
Martini_NY : 8/10/2011 9:54 pm : link
Hey Eddie, we again got cheap and now have lost SS. If SS comes back strong as the Eagles say, than our coach and GM have to go.I just wonder how long our country, gee golly, QB will last this season with the receivers and offensive line we have.Management has failed miserably and like I said last week , they have no clue on managing the cap. And oh yea, the OSI saga still is going on and festering. I for one don't want the baseball season to end. The press and media will be all in GREEN this football season!!

Josh in the City : 8/10/2011 9:55 pm : link
hmm lets see. Our salary cap was a fucking mess coming into this offseason. We lost both of Eli's 3rd down security blankets (Boss & Smith). We couldn't outbid the Jets (who were the 2nd highest team over the cap behind Dallas) for Plax. We were forced to cut two o-line starters, one who which was probably our best o-lineman last season. We signed an average Center, David Baas, to a contract that almost nobody else in the NFL thought he was worth. Need I go on or are you just wearing your homerism goggles tonight?
the same old shit

the negative posters on this site are out in force now. This might be a great move by the Giants. Only time will tell. The Giants have read the X-rays and MRIs. No one here has. But Jerry is an idiot and the world is ending.

Its a shame we can't allow the eagles fan site to sign some of these guys and get them off our board.

Josh in the City : 8/10/2011 10:00 pm : link
YOU sound like the idiot. It's a one year deal with $2mm guaranteed. You don't let a player like Smith go to your biggest rival without even giving him a chance to prove he could be the same player. He's Eli's favorite WR when healthy and to just give him away for basically nothing is an absolute joke. Players come back from injuries like this all the time now. To let him walk on a one year contract is a total travesty and Reese & Co. totally screwed this up.
I will take that as a compliment

when we hadn't signed AB, Boss, and Smith right away, that we were probably going to lose one....when we lost Boss, I thought it gave us extra money for Smith.....but then the negotiations dragged on....Smith gave them over 100 receptions on a rookie contract.....guess he felt he was owed some recognition for that in a one year contract....thought they would give him a one year performance deal, with a bonus....But Reese played hardball with the wrong guys.....he has some expalining to do on his contract offers(Bass vs Smith/Boss) and also how he has managed the cap....

If Smith does start on time, or comes in after the 6th game, and is recovered, it will not look good,,,,

This is definitely a blow to the offense.....does this team look as strong as the one that started last year?
I agree that it won't look good
santacruzom : 8/10/2011 11:03 pm : link
If Smith comes back before week six or so... But ONLY if he's producing like crazy and is an asset to a winning Eagles team while we're playing .50 ball or worse with an anemic passing game.

If Smith is succeeding but our WR's are as well, maybe this one of those things that worked out for all sides involved.
Hey guys
yankfan : 8/10/2011 11:06 pm : link
and gals, it's ALWAYS about the money. Players, teams, league......everything. It's a money driven game. I'm an old-school guy, and I miss the days when players stayed in the same place year after year. That said though, I realize that things had to change for the players to get a bigger piece of the pie. Losing Smith sucks, but in the end maybe someone better will come along.
how can you guys blame Smith for this?
Rudy57 : 8/11/2011 12:45 pm : link
I say good luck to him. the man is coming off a serious injury and one team was willing to give him a guaranteed $2M while the Giants were probably offering a league min or close to it with incentives.

there is a chance here that Smith never gets a a big Pay Day so this may be his shot to make a few bucks.

Half of you would bitch if we signed him to a big contract and now your bitching he signed with the Eagles. I think he gave every opportunity to the Giants to resign him so I cant blame the guy for taking the money. Its a 1 year deal so he will be a FA again next season. If he barely plays this season he will get a low incentive contract next season until he gets back to a high level.

It sucks that he went to the Eagles but they were probably the ones ones willing to give him money. With the new CBA they are forced to spend a certain amount of money this season so they took a flyer on Smith and overpaid.

There is no blame to go around here it is just a bad situation what came about because of the rules of the game. If this was an uncapped year I am sure the Giants would have stepped up but you cant commit $2M to a guy who may play half a season when you have a tight cap.

Get over it guys.
