Cruz, more than any other, will heal the Smith departure. This kid will be a significant player for the Giants this season, and before mid-season, many here on BBI will be saying "Steve who?"
Cruz is unproven, sure. But he's an "it" player. One of those intangibles guys. He'll be a quick favorite outlet for Eli, as Cruz showed last pre-season, he has a knack for (a) getting loose, and (b) working the field once the drawn play is cooked. He's got great instincts and will be a super weapon for the Giants.
Little guy? Uh, he's 6-1, 200-plus. (Steve Smith: 5-11, 195)
It's time to double back and re-introduce yourself to the next fan favorite.
Start with this, from when he first signed. - (

... that's a very special skill set." - ( New Window )
Possibly part of the reason the price was low to Smith?
Gotta wonder. - ( New Window )
We have no tight end and no possession receiver right now. We'll have a shit load of big plays, but we'll be missing the guy to get the 7 yard catch on 3rd and 6 in the big spot in the middle of the field
Nevertheless, go Cruz!
First step is get the OL gelled and together. If they suck we won't be able to pass or run. So in my mind that's step 1. Then, from there just chill and see what plays out. That's pretty much how I am going to take this season.
Beez, quite frankly I think Beckum sucks. I have zero expectations for him
Loved him as a Giant. But let's not prep a spot in Canton just yet.
No reason to think Cruz can only go deep.
Not sure if the 3rd/4th guy will be Cruz, Hixon, Jerrigan, Thomas, Barden or Beckum but I don't blame Reese for overpaying an injured Smith. I will blame him if we don't get production out of a position that we spent significant draft resources on.
Now I ain't saying 80+ catches or anything. I just think he makes a solid impact for the Giants this year.
Not that I think he's going to have a monster year.. but I think he's going to make the team and fill a lot of that potential everyone's always heard about with him.
SLIM ... not such a miller at all.

Reese's master plan moves into its' final stages
The big plays from MM and Nicks are great, but you need a possession receiver to go along with those guys
They did acknowledge it, though.. and they've been putting everyone in the slot in camp so far to prevent that from happening again. We will be much more prepared this year in that regard, IMO. Almost all of these guys are going to get reps there in different packages.

We saw the explosion last year. He's very quick. He's strong. And he has explosive movement. Plus it looked like he had excellent hands.
A lot to like with Cruz.
On the flipside, Smith was listed at 5-11. I stood next to him at camp last August. Highly doubt he's 5-11.
Probably the same for a lot of guys.
Ryan: Hey, I don't know who number 3 is, but holy $#!+

Smith 5116 at combine.
The most impressive number for Cruz was his 41.5" vertical. He also ran in the high 4.4s.
He looked great in preseason last year. We all saw it. Very explosive.
Not sure what's going to happen with Barden but I would imagine they'll keep him and put him on the PUP to start the year.
I think the simple fact that football players have to constantly adjust to what they see and process on the field often gets lost. And the ability to judge trajectories and velocity and all that jazz isn't innate in everyone.
Comparisons to Sean Bennett be damned. I remember that big play he made against the Vikes in preseason, and his performance in that game just wasn't as indicative of a skill set as Cruz's in my opinion.
