I started this thread a few months back when i first moved to Cowboy country, but i didnt get much of a response... Can anybody help me out. Are there any Giants bars in Austin?
I used to work at Cover 3 and don't recommend it. It's not a bar for fans by any standards. More like a bar for people who like to pretend they are into sports.
Mr. Tramps is pretty cool. Food is ok to sub par but it has a great beer selection and the owner is always helpful. If you get there early and ask he will put the game on the projector screen in the back. I used to go there for soccer games.
Pluckers and third base are only ok. Lots of fans with good food but not my kind of places. Some of the tvs are so small and high it's not worth straining the eyes.
the bowling alley/sports bar on I35 by Rundburg shows the games too, and I have heard that some Giant fans hang out there. But Tramps is the best IMHO.
I think a couple guys used to go to Little Woodrow's off parmer/mccneil, but I've never been. I always meant to, but I lived too far then and I'm lazy.
i just moved from austin last month, but lived there for 7 years. in those 7 years im pretty sure i tried nearly every sports bar in town (including a handful that have since closed down...on that note, Ringers was the best one Austin had to offer until they decided to stop paying their taxes)
1. i agree about cover 3. its a restaurant with TVs IMO. i went there last year for the NYG-MIN game only because it was closest to where i lived. it was awful.
2. third base has also become rapidly awful. bad food, bad service, bartenders - who control the TVs - are huge assholes.
3. i actually dont think puckers is terrible because the food is halfway decent and you can typically get a decent view of the game.
4. not a big fan of tramps after having been a couple of times both for football and for their bar trivia. sorry but they just didnt do it for me. food was OK, drinks were OK and TVs were OK
5. there are a few others that i wont get into that i tried even just in the past year including Sams Boat, Upper Decks, etc. not worth going into.
so where to go? i would recommend Legends sports bar in the holiday inn near the 183/mopac intersection. this place used to be meh, but last year they got all brand new flat screen HDTVs. they've got a TON of TVs, a TON of space, the food is above average for a sports bar. and just as importantly, you can typically get them to put your game on basically any of the small (not that small/ or medium TVs). big screen typically reserved for DAL/HOU and i think they have some Skins fans there. but every time i went there were a handful of giants fans.
Legends doesnt get much pub since like i said it was definitely below average compared to some of the fancier digs that were coming out like Third Base, Cover 3 etc...but its amazing what the influx of 30 new HDTVs coupled to already good food and booze can do.

I'd recommend Tramps.
