it's not post game just yet, but this has to be the ugliest play you could ever watch. Eli looked terrible and looks completely out of sync with his WR's. Moving the ball, but yet again turnovers kill us..plus no slot WR and no TE= a long year in the Red Zone potentialy if someone doesnt step up.
Defense played pretty well as a whole, but special teams, holy crap, blocked FG, 1 muffed kick off, 2 muffed punts and a fumble by Jernigan.
I know it's pre season, but yikes did this team look terrible and uninterested tonight
Lone bright spot being the run game, which looked pretty good
calling Jacobs selfish...either that or he is just an idiot. He's lucky he didn't get called for taunting after his long run just before he got tossed. This is nothing new for him.
I love Jacobs as much as the next guy but this defies logic. He has got to be fucking stupid. He'll do it again ....and again. I said the same thing five years ago and got killed for it.
it's the preseason and I won't get too antsy, but I know I'm not the only one tired of crap return games and crap coverage teams year in and year out. Tynes has done a good job of stabilizing the kicking game and we had a fine punter in Feagles for a number of years, but return and especially coverage teams over time have less to do over time with personnel than with coaching.
if they can play more like they did last week, this team will be pretty tough. Starting defense looks pretty good. Offense is a little off, but they should get better w/ more reps.
is the consistent "1 option" plays and other blatantly obvious play calls. i.e. bradshaw hasnt played all game lines up in the wheel route position and they run a wheel route... or when we check in a short receiver and then run and end around. Also how many plays eli has to stare down the same guy as its really a 1 route play. it makes no sense given the weapons we have. It would be nice to see a bigger target running these slot routes cruz is.
On another note, our D looked good, our oline blocked well, jacobs hit the holes, and if you are like me, and trust eli for the QB he is, then you realize he again missed some throws, but things are there, and he will make it click in the regular season just like we do every year on offense.
We look like world beaters between the 20's. Defense can not make a play when they need to and specials look downright awful. Oh yeah can our QB stop turning the ball over.
are damn good. People need to keep that in perspective when talking about tonights game. And they were clearly amped to play tonight. Many of the mistakes on offense were self inflicted and Eli just having the off day he is prone to from time to time, but this is probably the best defense we will play all year. Its a positive to get reps against them heading into the season, it will better prepare the team for week 1
Defense first team was real good tonight, only score allowed the Jets got a short field on the cromartie return, and needed to convert a 4th down (just barely) to keep the drive alive. Didn't like seeing the td pass but you can't expect perfection
We are not good enough to keep making these mistakes. Quinn has to go, Gilbride is next, and then TC. The message is not getting through to these guys. Plus we lost TT the whole season is lost per Eric.
hes been a liability at times against the pass in these last couple games, but im not worried about him nor the defense much. The offense and special teams need to stop putting this defense in tough spots all the damn time though. They had to defend short fields so many times last year
the offense is still out of sync - how much that is new players, rhythm not being established, etc. and how much is players not not performing, the lack of a solid TE (although I liked Ballard's reception in the 1st Q) remains to be seen.
D looked good, hopefully it'll get better as some of the newer elements get up to speed.
And, my biggest negative takeaway (provided there are no serious injuries) - ST still sucks. That's my biggest issue, and I fear they can't repair that prior to Wk1.
That's the issue on this team. The offense moved the ball and their mistakes and Eli's in particular will be corrected. The defense was excellent tonight.. but we can't keep getting burned by our own specials. Jernigan had an awful night with 2 muffs and a fumble.. the coverage on the Cromartie return was inexcusable, too. Weatherford did punt well again, though.
the first team D has been outstanding in this pre season. Im really excited about their prosects in year 2 under Fewell. The TT injury is a blow, but i think we will have enough to get by at corner unless more injuries pile up
Ars still special teams,(who is returning punts?)the lack of an NFL starting tight end, third down receiver, and free safety where it appears to me that Phillips can't play well anymore. last year he gets a bye.He looks awful to me this preseason.
I see a 7-9 record and a third straight year out of the playoffs. With Manning's bone-headed throws, Gilbride's crappy game calling, and no ability to convert third downs, we are doomed.
underwhelming in terms of preparation and execution for a preseason effort. They better start developing a sense of urgency, especially on offense and special teams..
and some bad things. Its just pre-season, basic vanilla schemes and plays and hopefully no serious injuries. Even though its preseason, I still don't get posting on the post-game thread while the game is still going on.
looks like ffense wont click till 2-3 into the season...
both stepped up their games tonight. These are 2 young guys who we will need to contribute for us.
Although the Giants didn't score, it was nice to see them move the ball up and down the field.
Also i hate to admit it, but losing steve smith is going to hurt us on third down play. The only person who i see could possibly step up and help us is hixon.
People are way too worried about Eli and the offense in general, IMO.
This will be a good offense. Hakeem Nicks again showed flashes of his dominance making some tough catches and breaking free from initial contact a couple times. Mario was wide open on that one play and Eli missed him by about 5 yards. They just need to get in sync.
The one legitimate worry right now is ST's. They have to improve because they're going to put both units in a bad position if they don't.
On 1st teams the giants won on everything but the score
Jets made one play on O after the big return. Otherwise nothing. Giants made too many mistakes that derailed drives. Clean that up and they win the first half easily.
Everyone says Phillips was some great player two years ago, but aren't we really talking about one great game? He also had a decent game against Pittsburgh the year before that. But let's not glorify what he was either.
there were a number of plays where he saw the pass rush which forced bad throws. The Oline did a pretty good job of picking up the blitz, but it was enough pressure to force bad throws.
Devin Thomas will be an upgrade, despite a muff tonight.
Giants would be wise to keep Weatherford, over Dodge, just for the sake of consistency.
Coverage teams..again, we don't know what they are doing. Experimenting with different combos for sure.
One area of concern is the punt returner.....JJ lost that role tonight probably. But he won't go to the practice squad....he'd be gobbled up in a second.
I have absolutely no problem with tonights game. Looks like we came out relatively injury free. Both teams weren't showing much. I already expect the special teams to suck every single game so this is just par for the course. Eli will be fine, as he's proven over the course of half a decade. This game meant nothing other than get alot of reps and dont get injured. Mission accomplished.
Oh and i'm with LTS. It's absolutely incredible how Quinn still has a job IMO. They are bad pretty much across the board. Every team has the same pool of talent to shape their special teams units and we've been terrible year after year and still are terrible. Not mediocre - terrible.
Its the SOL but with added injuries .
The specials again look incompetent .
I understand the Vanilla offense but holy crap how can Eli
look so piss poor the same old throwing off the back foot and when he did have someone open he just was not even close .
It was a god awful game to watch . I would bet the starters play a little longer than normal next week .
The bright side is the running game looks good and Sintim
made some plays ..Jerrigan really looked bad ..
broken-up TD pass to Manningham. He should have had the TD, but he played the ball terribly. Instead of going up and getting it, he waited for it to drop into his hands, resulting in the break-up. Yeah, he got deep on one play, but overall I don't think he had a sharp game at all.
first TD when the let Cromartie get a 70 yd return. Other than that we looked like the better team on the field. Eli has to stop forcing the ball and we need to do better on 3rd down but we moved the ball. Eli threw for 200 yds against that defense. The defense looked real tough and will get better when Osi returns.
Perhaps TC was saving some fresh bodies for Thursday?? Who knows. Herzlich's chances of making the team get better with each snap that Dillard and Sintim take.
As for the game, God only knows why Tom Quinn is still our special teams coach. His sloppiness almost cost us the Super Bowl, thanks to the 12 men on the field penalty. It's embarrassing than an NFL special teams unit is this inept. Makes me long for the days of Feagles and Tyree.
you are so right about the nickel. Ross can take over for TT, but there was nobody to take over for Ross. CB is still a huge issue. The defense was excellent, but the pass did not look like it was getting any significant pressure from the front four by itself.
I think he's showing some good things. When he came downhill and hit Greene. There was also a play last week where he showed his range on a completion toward the sideline.Didn't look like he had lost much of that 4.4 speed, which I thought was important.Regardless of the completed pass.
I think everyone is being overly fucking negative and abusive to each other. Stop it!!!! Seriously, you guys or gals or both need to check yourselves.
I think the Giants offensively have work to do. Our receivers are not as in sync with Eli as most have predicted. Yeah, we have a lot of WR, but it means squat when the throws are off. I don't know what's up with Eli, but I hope he gets whatever is on his mind together. He don't look right. I know some of you want to rip me a new one for my post earlier. I'll give Eli his just due when he proves himself out there this season.
The running game is improving. I thought Ware could make a great case for the #2 slot behind Bradshaw. I also think Baas is helping the O-Line know their roles. We're far from perfect as an offense, but I think the season will test our strength and mental fortitude. I believe we'll overcome these blunders in the pre-season.
The secondary is definitely hurting from the lack of TT. Still, it's no excuse for blown coverages. Unacceptable. They must step up and be accountable. If they know their assignments well, we have a shot at stopping some prime WRs this season. Again, it depends on whether they're going to put in the work.
The specials is shaky. I think the Returners need some super glue or something cause they don't know how to catch. Maybe Quinn needs to go over some drills this week or somethin because it's scary to see guys drop some catch-able balls on the Kickoff.
Overall, I grade the Giants a C-. Some improvement, but we're not fully there yet.
can he help the passing game? This year is different than most, and we are pretty crowded at WR, but I have a hard time seeing even lower level teams use a spot on a player, who in all likelihood, won't contribute a thing this year.
Essentially, he was projected to be good, and then got hurt. He really has only had one or two very good games in his career. he looks below average now, to me.
with our pass Defense, but the defense overall tonight was good to very good. My only concern tonight was the front four's lack of ability to get to the qb on a consistent basis. But, after all, Tuck had a rough day and to his credit he was out there at all. JPP is really good and has great potential but his footwork still needs loads of improvement.
was atrocious. I guess last week was an aberration, like the proverbial poor marksman who eventually hits the target if given enough shots.
Eil played poorly. That is a cause for concern, especially given his reversion to throwing the ball up for grabs off his back foot when under pressure. Maddening.
JJ is not going to be the PR. Doubt he gets cut, but it's a harder decision now with Clayton again playing well on ST.
D looked great.
I agree with Eric that CWeb and Ross are solid, but we still really have no depth.
hopefully will come around and hopefully the specials will be at least an average unit. Right now they suck.
Other then that the defense and the oline have gotten me excited for the season. They look like they have come together nicely and are ready to start the year. Jacobs has ran hard and hopefully stays healthy. The WR's will get open. Tight End is the weak spot. Lets pray somebody decent shakes loose.
Barden and Calhoun out? I'd really still like to give Barden a chance. I'm not that much of a Cruz fan personally. He had the one great (preseason) game and...has he had more than that one great (preseason) game?
seems to get the hangtime needed for our gunners and the punt team to do their jobs. He might not have the cannon that Dodge has, but he gets the job done.
was just a total breakdown on offense. A late snap, terrible coverage, a throw of the back foot, etc. The second one was because he keyed in on Bradshaw and that might have been because they were working on a play. According to MG, Cruz was wide open on the other side and Eli did not even scan the field.
the only issue with Barden is that he's no help to the special teams. But we really have no idea where Barden is on the depth chart. Is he a #3, 4 worse? Better?
is not in the equation because he is on the PUP and therefore does not count against the roster. We essentially don't have to make a decision about him until week 13.
I think Clayton and Reynaud will still be cut. JJ sticks because of his draft status. His problems tonight were mental. I agree with the Dodge comparisons in that regard. He was an explosive player in college. He needs more time to adjust to the game. No OTAs and the lock out really hurt him I think.
and he will be back at specials when the bullets fly.
Eric, that was pretty damming about the second team not having their hearts in it. These guys are one injury away from starting...if they can't come out with some fire, then it's time to start putting some heat on the coaching staff.
In any case, Quinn is a disaster, and I just can't see the Front office being patient with him, no matter how loyal Tom is to Quinn. This is getting worst than Hufnagel. There was a huge effort by the Giants to bring in better players for specials, and it's not showing on the field.
we can't get upset that the coaches were persistent in getting JJ reps as the punt returner. The tough part for fans, is that we just don't know who's going to what, like whether they intend to use Hixon as a punt returner.
I do remember Dave Meggitt had 3 fumbles in a preseason game his rookie year, but JJ doesn't look like Meggitt.
but there is a roster cap so it's not really a red shirt when it comes to decisions being made for this year. t's that simple in terms of expectations for these guys, but not that simple wrt putting a team on the field
I didn't see Cruz open all night.I saw a quarterback unconfortable on third down. You may be on the Cruz bandwagon but I am not sold. Eli Manning and the Giants will miss what Steve Smith gave them. When Cruz actually does something in a real game then you can say I told you so.One great preseason game against backups means NOTHING.Steve Smith played in the biggest of games and played at a very high level.I am actually hoping that Coughlin goes to Hixon as his #3 receiver.
very disappointed with the following...
1. Special Teams but this is nothing new.
2. Offensive play calling. Yes I know that pre-season is vanilla. That is not my issue. Again, they telegraph the play with their substitutions AND with their formations. I guess this will never change.
3. I really did not like what I saw from Eli. He played like a second year QB. The decision making on his two INTs is the problem. I would rather see him overthrow a WR and have the ball land in the arms of a safety. No...he just made two bad decisions. The first one while under pressure he throws it up for grabs off of his back foot while back peddling. The second one he throws to a guy who was doubled over and under. Finally, you absolutely cannot miss Manningham on that long pass. You cannot miss those...it is six points. The difference sometimes between winning and losing. Was not a difficult throw.
Scott survives this cut but he's definitely on the bottom end of the depth chart which means he's on the bubble. I'm sure he'll see some action Thursday.. It's possible they try to stash him on the practice squad though which is likely if he doesn't see the field at all Thursday.
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT RYAN'S FATHER PUNCHED OUT KG?
ANSWER+ "HE was a horrible OC 30 years ago.
WHY have our better Line Backers come from other teams than the DRAFT ?? We have drafted 6-9 line backers and only 1 or 2 made the grade. We signed our best mlb since Carson from the Skins and Mitchel from KC, Canty from Dallas.
I question Reece's ability to be GM.
WHY IS QUINN a coach on the team?
I have to say Reese did a great job picking Jacobs and Bradshaw.
The void in TE and FB is inexcusable.
I hope my Polish cousin can make me eat my words.
May the football Gods look over us.
P.S. Eli maybe the in the top 10 Quarter Backs.
cruz beat Kyle Wilson badly and Eli overthrew him for one. And on the second INT of the game Cruz was wide open and Eli never looked at him. Just a couple of examples, there were more.
First, Steve is injured, and he wouldn't have played tonight. There's no guarantee that Steve would have played the first half of the season for us, or that he would be the same SS we all admired. We would still be having problems.
These guys have to come up big, or JR needs to get someone here who's a decent 3rd down guy (like Ricky Proehl was).
Right now, I'm not worried about the skill guys as much as I am specials. We don't block for PR's/KO's, we don't tackle, we don't maintain lane coverage. That is going to result in loss after loss if it's not fixed.
Specials is the heart of a team. If a team has fire in the belly, it shows in specials. Right now, I see guys going through the motions.
OTOH, last game he dropped the ones that wre thrown to him
nails it on Phillips. People act like Phillips was some top of the league stud prior to his injury. He was a starter for like 2 games, had a couple INTs against Dallas in his final game, the only 2 of his career outside of a hail mary pick against Roethlisberger as a rookie.
Its almost as if hes being judged against the all world pre injury Phillips which is largely just a figment of peoples imagination and did not exist
Hes a nice player, probably the most sound tackler on the defense although people will focus on a whiff in the Eagles game last season. He'll be fine
Reese didn't draft Jacobs. Reese has great contributions as rookies from the 2007 draft. His best other picks to date are:Manningham,Nicks,JPP,and Joseph.IMO he has been good, not great with the drafts and free agency.Barden,Beckum,Sintim,Dillard,Phillips(injury, but who knows)and some questionable free agent contracts are under his watch.Bottom line is that he won a Super Bowl and he will be the teflon man for a while.
It's Coughlin's offense people. Gilbride is a very, very important part of the team, but it's Coughlin's offense.
And you know what? It's the best Giants offense that's been around since I've been alive (I'm 43 by the way). The Giants NEVER had a passing game like this since Y.A. Title was around and then nothing like it before then.
I am not pining for Smith. That ship has sailed. Lie you stated,we need a Smith or Proehl type who finds the open spots on third downs and keeps the chains moving.Beckum is not that guy and I am not sold on any of our wide receivers besides the starters.I like Hixon but I don't see him as a third down slot guy.
It may be good (and the best we ever had), but has the potential to be great and far more efficient. It's too predictable and lacks some ingenuity. Gilbride is still responsible for the play-calling and needs to held accountable for our red-zone inefficiencies.
yes you are right. We have never seen this kind of passing offense. The old regime would rather run it down the opponent's throat. The old regime would have an O-line that could gain a yard regardless as to who was in front of them. It was a different offensive philosophy. Today's Giants cannot impose their will on a team the way the old Giants could. So, it is a give and take.
Now, about our OC.....
Yes it is Coughlin's offense but he does not call and design every play. My problem with the offense again is simple. We need a yard and we stack the line making it nearly impossible to gain a yard. We should spread the field and give the LBs and safeties something else to think about. On a first down play, we brought in an extra big body as our 5th eligible (this was not a short yardage situation). So, of course we ran out of that formation and the defense was waiting for it. We also still cannot run a screen properly and it rarely works unless there is an incredible individual effort.
Just please tell me who I should blame here. At this point I do not care who it is...I just want it to stop.
I am not pointing out anything that is specific to this game. These are things that have been bothering me for a couple of years.
love to hate on offensive coordinators. Name me one who was ever popular here? Fans hated Sean Payton even during a SB run in 2000
The offense is an upper 1/3 offense in the league. Its an above average offense and has been for years. It can be overrated at times when people compare it to past Giant offenses because frankly our history is absolutely dreadful offensively since the merger for the most part.
The turnovers need to stop though. And A lot of that is going to come down to Eli. Im frankly tired of the red carpet of excuses rolled out for all his picks. There are people here who will basically explain away every interception hes ever had as being on someone other than him
What got everyone attention was Coughlin giving him praise a few years back in a training camp interview.Quote was "He's making plays we haven't seen around here in awhile".Or something to that effect
But he's also close to 6'3.Runs like that, best tackling safety I had seen in awhile.Good ball skills(although my only evidence of that is the Torry Holt near interception from his rookie year).
it's just grating that SS comes up as often as he does, as if we lost the pre injury Smith. Fact is, we would need someone brought in or to step up this season even if we had kept Smith, because of the injury.
What kills me is how people are not going hyper over specials. Why is our defense always playing a short field? Why does our offense not start in better field position than the other team? Would Eli look a LOT better if his starting field position was more on the positive side of the 20? Would our defense be a lot better if we could pin the other team behind the 20?
I'm ticked off, because I'm sick of having lousy specials. Why do other teams have good to decent specials? The talent there isn't that much better than ours, and often worst. The only common thread is coaching. Tom needs to fix this...if anything can get him in trouble, this is it.
passing game its not fair to compare today with the past. Imagine what the other guys would have done with todays rules. The DL are not allowed to manhandle the QB a la Ben Davidson to Namath. The CB can't touch the receivers 5 yards down field. The NFL has done everything to make the passing game better.
There are no reasons for panic. I'm mostly confident that the passing game will take some time to work itself out, but it is definitely a concern. Pretty ugly on offense so far this year, but the defense looks pretty sharp.
Mario basically had an 85 yard touchdown tonight, he had an 85 yard TD and a 93 yard TD in the final 2 games of last season, the two longest pass plays of Eli's career. We are going to hit on some huge gainers with him this year. Hes a threat to score at literally any moment from anywhere on the field. Thats an overused term for most skill players but its 100% true with him.
You might want to take a look at our rushing statistics
Eric...
tyleraimee : 11:10 pm
yes you are right.
Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw combined for 2000 plus yards rushing, and 17 rushing TD's last season, so....
than they ever have before, and its not close. YPC drastically up from any point in franchise history, total yardage too. We had the franchise rushing record broken and re-broken in the first 3 years of the Coughlin era by Tiki, and then had the team set a Giants record in 2008 and have two 1,000 yard backs. They were good last year too
I thought overall the starters looked pretty good...
Eli and the passing game need to continue to improve for sure.
The running game looked great.
The offensive line looks pretty solid.
The defensive has an exciting amount of potential.
Special teams are a concern, but were not nearly as bad as the first preseason game (JJ probably won't be our punt returner, and the Cromartie return I thought was a hold)
The only gripe I have is with Gilbride because his playcalling seems so predictable to me. I have said that for years though and if they can get in sync it has been shown to be very efficient. Minus those damn Delay of Game penalties that we can't ever seem to overcome.
Just some quick thoughts of mine. I hardly think the meltdown on here should be in full season mode yet. I would have liked to see one passing TD from the first team in preseason though......
No major injuries tonight (hopefully). So overall not the worse preseason game ever. IMO
looked active, which is new for him. It was mostly against the twos but I thought he did well. Here's hoping Jackson gets healthy to be the # 4-5 CB and safety because Coe did not play well.
I meant the overall defense has a lot of potential...
regardless of how they have looked at points in this pre season against Curtis Painter, is not the Jets. This was necessary work against an elite 3-4 defense heading into the matchup with them. Best defense we will likely be playing all season long, they will be better from the experience
Jets deserve credit for playing very well tonight too. People like to look at it from their teams perspective only, but their first team D had a lot to do with our struggles. This defense ate Tom Brady up and spit him out twice last year. They'll do this to a lot of passing offenses
Also, it is very safe to say we are always very vanilla on offense in preseason games.....(even though I have my own thoughts about Gilbride)....He calls some great games and some bad ones....I have just grown to accept it, and hope Eli makes smart throws (which tonight he didn't)
Preseason is all about experience, and they got some good work in tonight..
took their starters out before we did im not sure how you can say they played the game to win any more than us. Thats a common fan thought when their team gets outplayed in a pre season game, "the other team wanted it more and we were just going through the motions in a pre season game". Give the Jets credit. They were better today. Good thing the game does not count
they got the benefit of a couple of brutal calls on their scoring drive. kick return should have come back, they should have gone 4 and out after a fumble, and then their first play after was a pretty brutal hold by Plax to open it up.
both offenses were bad, honestly theirs was worth. both D played very well.
about their defense vs our offense. Our defense was outstanding tonight and might have shut them out if not for a special teams return giving them great field position
I would not say their offense was worse. They didn't move the ball as often as we did, but they also didn't turn it over two times which is a killer in this league
In any case i was speaking mostly about their defense vs our first team O, not the teams as a whole, although their first team did leave with a lead
because we lost Terrell Thomas for the season. Provided Kiwi's injury isn't serious, the result tonight was just fine. The first team basically played the Jets first team to a draw
they scored a TD because an 80 year old man is blind
Eli ELI ELI any disagreements? we go as far as him. this was a terrible game offense and defense if no adjustments are made we all will be "BITCHING" and "COMPLAINING" for 16 weeks "sounds familiar". yeah some passes should've been caught however was this a dress a rehearsal of our upcoming season? WOW! not very impressed ...... Qua
means plenty in preseason. All you are doing is practicing plays. We had a much higher % of plays that worked. In one half of football the Giants were clearly better.
You would have been happier if they played like the Jets? I sure wouldn't.
The only thing the Giants did wrong in that first half was the 2 terrible throws by Eli. But they also had a lot of very good plays on offense and defense. A lot more than the Jets.
no it doesn't, not when the franchise sets a team record for turnovers last year and makes protecting the ball the #1 priority entering this season. You can't just gloss over two turnovers as if they're somehow flukes
3 points and 2 turnovers in 2 1/2 quarters and stopped on the goal line by Jets backups
I think highly of our prospects on offense this year but spare me the talk about the Giants offense doing well tonight
and had one play, after going 4 and out immediately after a brain-dead pick.
unfortunately an official intervened.
really the only good thing I saw out of their offense tonight was Greene pushing the pile. Plax looked slow and was getting covered by non-CB's, LDT looked like toast, Sanchez didn't do anything (although admittedly doing nothing is better than throwing a wheelroute into double coverage)....
we moved the ball, just in typical Giants fashion, we found a way to minimize the points scored out of it
"in one half of football the Giants were clearly better"
Except in the only two areas that really count. Scoreboard, and turnover differential, which after scoreboard is the one area which decides games in the NFL more than anything else
6000 yards is impressive "NO PLAYOFFS" good on paper we want to win not just stack our statistics all teams suffer injuries we need help all over this team "WE" are not a contender right now and you know it ..... Qua
We were the better team "hands down" yet the starters left down 7-3 and failed to score a touchdown on their backups
Turnovers is the main focus of the entire offseason, they turn it over twice in one half and its no biggie, it will just give us time to "self correct". Well this offense has been given a lot of things to "self correct" on that front in recent times yet has not "corrected" it. It remains a problem, and one you're just glossing over as if it didn't happen
The interceptions have to stop, period
they were the first two of the preseason by anyone
thats not saying much given the offense played like a combined 3 quarters in the first two games. Congrats to them for going a full 3 quarters without a turnover. Great job
partly because the Giants are playing again on Thursday. I'm sure those guys will get plenty of looks then along with other guys who were missing in action tonight.
All in all, offense moved the ball against a damn good defense. Bad decisions by Eli cost them, but the line looked good, the running game looked good. Nicks and Mario were having some success against two pretty good corners. Still lacking production from TE and the slot. Defense looked great in the first half and uninterested coming out for the second. Specials is a disaster but a lot of these guys will be gone anyway. Think we need to re-assess Jernigan as our PR.
I'm talking about anyone from the 1st stringers to the 5th stringers
had it up to here with the interceptions, and had it up to here with the excuses for the interceptions. It just has to stop. And with all the excusing that goes on regarding the routes by his WRs and the dissection of every INT Eli has ever thrown until we can decide its "not his fault", the fact remains hes led the league twice in picks and done it with two completely different sets of receivers now. He did it in 07 with Plax, Amani, Shockey, he did it last year with a whole new cast. He is the constant.
The best ball this team has ever played was during the 07 playoff run and the 08 regular season when Eli ceased being a turnover machine for a short time.
You can go there if you want, the main difference is there was a large stretch in his career where that guy wasn't a pick machine. He lost the structure of Holmgren and in the back half of his career basically had free reign to do whatever the hell he wanted and cared as much about being entertaining as he did effective. That guy also had years in his prime where he hovered around 3:1 in TD to INT and above 2:1 several times. Eli has been better than 2:1 exactly one time in 7 years
The bottom line is this shit needs to cease though
the constant excuse makers are absolutely no better than the mouthbreathers who want him run out of town. You can be critical of the guy and still view him as the best option for this team now and in the future
but I just think today was a massive overreaction, a post traumatic stress deal of sorts.
did Pats fans go bananas this week because Brady kept getting bounced off the turf and again looked lost when he was getting hit? I dunno, maybe they did. that's another negative trend by a QB, obviously Brady has a far superior track record, but when this happens, they just don't win.
and it's been happening more and more.
I would guess they just said it was a preseason game and walked away from it.
hey, in a perfect world they wouldn't be doing a Colts on crack offensive system where the QB has to micromanage everything and virtually every route is an option.... but it is what it is.
I think this stuff is too much and it hurts them in the chase for this "perfect" game that can be played, in theory.
maybe it comes across that way in print. Im just disappointed to see those turnovers tonight in the one game the starters actually see significant time and the one game that actually semi matters, especially coming off last season and with the added emphasis on not letting that happen
to Eli pressing to make plays while juggling inexperience at WR, 2 new position coaches, and a revolving door OL. IMO it's more of an aberration than it is a trend. Not making an excuse, but those are all factors that played a role in last year's interception plagued season. We might not look great right out of the gate (due to 2 new starters on the OL), but I fully expect us to cut down on the turnovers.
I don't view it as an aberration at all. Not when leading the league in picks has happened twice in the past 4 years, and we've thrown more than any team in the NFL since 2006.
Perhaps the degree of it (25 picks) was a bit of an aberration, but having issues throwing picks was not isolated to 2010
some of the stuff in the thread was just insane. he'd make a good throw (like the push-out one), albeit maybe not an intelligent throw, and still get ripped for it.
I dunno, I know I can win a SB with the guy, so maybe I'm just willing to cut slack. And I really don't have that Yankees fan mentality, it takes me a long time to get annoyed if you at least gave me something at some point.
I don't like dumb throws, I don't necessarily like not standing in... but I can understand it in preseason games, so I won't bitch about throwing the ball to Manningham one step early because he was afraid that the protection was going to fall apart.
regular season games, big spot, something like that might annoy me a bit more.
lol. keep it at 2-1 and I'll be fine. as long as the defense is playing well. if it's a Sheridan type of situation obviously any kind of stop = doom.
I can't see a QB that has lapses here and there + an option season with recievers that maybe don't graps it 100%, even if they are talented, producing single digit picks.
single digits. Especially in this offense. Not a knock against it, but it seems to be a high risk/high reward offense. Turnovers will happen, but we're fortunate to have a guy that's good enough to make more good plays than bad ones.
You can produce low turnover rates in this offense
he did it in 2010. This offense was once also explained away as the reason he could somehow not hit 60% passing, it just couldn't be done with our offense many said. Then hes done it 3 consecutive years and was a shade under 63% last season, blowing that thought out of the water
but 2009-10 was a career year. without him they wouldn't have won very many games.
just happened at the wrong time.
and in 2008 they had a mauling line and a running game that just demoralized opponents. when you make the Ravens your bitch you have something going for you.
it's really not that way now. honestly, I don't like their interior running game/bloking a whole lot and didn't like it last year. I thought Bradshaw's improv masked alot of things that were going on.
Eli has had seasons where he has attained those benchmarks, but I think that's a testament to how much he's improved. To have a season where you're making 60% and throwing only 10 picks takes a lot of things to go right. 2008 was that perfect storm where we had an awesome running game, an OL still at its absolute peak, veteran wr's like Toomer/Burress, and Steve Smith coming into his own. 2008 was the trophy we left on the table.
One would hope that 100s of fans who have been fans since they were 7-10 years old would realize by now that pre-season games predict virtually nothing about what will happen during the regular season. Seemingly most BBIers are hopeless. Pre-season 07 Giants were 1-3 & had the 6th worst pt. differential @ -17. Pats went 2-2 & avged 21 PPG pre-season & over 36 PPG regular season. Miami won 1 more game in pre-season that year than they did in the regular season. In 1973 the Giants were 6-0 pre-season & 2-11-1 regular.
Chicago went out and got marts for Cutler and there was a difference Eli needs someone to help and we need an game plan that builds on what are his strenghths
I think fans are confident about our running game in general, but short yardage has been a problem for some time. And converting on 3rd down is still an issue, which is why people here miss Steve Smith, understandable so.
Special teams, I'm not as concerned. Jernigan won't be returning punts during the regular season, Lloyd probably won't be our kicker, and I think Devin Thomas is better than what he showed last night.
Regarding Sintim, he was active, but he wasn't exactly effective. Not many tackles at or behind the LOS, where there?
I really like what I am seeing from Ross so far. I thought he was done because mentally he checked out last year. He is playing (in pre season) like the guy we thought we were getting when we drafted him.
I thought Bradshaw looked incredible and has looked fantastic this whole pre-season. I'm all for limiting his touches and increasing the 3rd back's to keep him fresh like this for the year.
I thought Rolle played very well. I like him in the nickel role (like Darren Sharper used to do), his versatility is going to help a lot this year.
Beatty played well, but the Jets DL is nothing to write home about.
Kmac looks terrific.
Boley with good coverage.
Ross another solid outing.
Webster was all over Holmes on the TD but Homes is a stud.
Plax looked out of it.
The Jets biggest problem is still no passrush. They will have to blitz alot and it's going to burn them.
Defense played pretty well as a whole, but special teams, holy crap, blocked FG, 1 muffed kick off, 2 muffed punts and a fumble by Jernigan.
I know it's pre season, but yikes did this team look terrible and uninterested tonight
Lone bright spot being the run game, which looked pretty good
I love Jacobs as much as the next guy but this defies logic. He has got to be fucking stupid. He'll do it again ....and again. I said the same thing five years ago and got killed for it.
On another note, our D looked good, our oline blocked well, jacobs hit the holes, and if you are like me, and trust eli for the QB he is, then you realize he again missed some throws, but things are there, and he will make it click in the regular season just like we do every year on offense.
add that to injuries and we got "Eli"te the bestest top 5 qb of all time.
Defense first team was real good tonight, only score allowed the Jets got a short field on the cromartie return, and needed to convert a 4th down (just barely) to keep the drive alive. Didn't like seeing the td pass but you can't expect perfection
Special teams just fucking blew as usual
its just tough cuz frustrating...
the offense and its 'self inflicted-ness' really is something that needs to be more seriously addressed... this shit keeps happening year in and out.
i thought we did well on D also but their Offense is not the Pats... its Sanchez...
add hat to key players suffering injuries that have yet to be determined just makes it really annoying
Not for the Giants, not for the Eagles, not for anyone.
D looked good, hopefully it'll get better as some of the newer elements get up to speed.
And, my biggest negative takeaway (provided there are no serious injuries) - ST still sucks. That's my biggest issue, and I fear they can't repair that prior to Wk1.
Reese: I know our players. Not John.
If so, were they giving Cruz a chance to show his knowledge of the offense versus first team defense?
Just wonderin......because I expect Manning/Hixon to be vital this year.
Herzlich, Kennedy, Watson, and Brewer come to mind.
Specials make you want to hurl.
Although the Giants didn't score, it was nice to see them move the ball up and down the field.
Also i hate to admit it, but losing steve smith is going to hurt us on third down play. The only person who i see could possibly step up and help us is hixon.
The one legitimate worry right now is ST's. They have to improve because they're going to put both units in a bad position if they don't.
ST's are still too up and down.
My surprise? I didn't think Ballard could run that far down field.
Oh and i'm with LTS. It's absolutely incredible how Quinn still has a job IMO. They are bad pretty much across the board. Every team has the same pool of talent to shape their special teams units and we've been terrible year after year and still are terrible. Not mediocre - terrible.
But our specials are so glaringly bad, I think you need a definite in punt formation. That's Weatherford, not Dodge.
Lots of lower level teams, esp.
Think long term....slot receiver, remember? That's what we all said.
Just because he is failing on specials doesn't mean he gets cut.
As for the game, God only knows why Tom Quinn is still our special teams coach. His sloppiness almost cost us the Super Bowl, thanks to the 12 men on the field penalty. It's embarrassing than an NFL special teams unit is this inept. Makes me long for the days of Feagles and Tyree.
he's a former starter and if he's back he most likely will be a good player for us IMO
60 yards and a turn over not smart
Turn overs not smart .
Also, thought Linval had a good game.
We'll see how he does
We can't cut him....too much ability. That's why we picked him 3rd.
Cruz makes this team.....they both make it, in fact.
Boy, do our second stringers suck as a group.
Were the testing the young Cruz?
Big impact on the passing game tonight.....
Good hands, experience.
Again, they need to make the prudent moves to tighten things up. Hixon, Weatherford......a good start IMO.
The game is just too big for him right now. He needs a year to settle in.
Coughlin seems to be more upset with the receivers/TEs than Eli. Said 1st INT was more because of no "sight adjustment" by TE or WR. #nyg
While Dodge is showing his leg off, I'd rather know where every punt is going. If we were super on specials, you could keep Matty.
Feagles was pretty darn good at that...Weatheford is very similar.
But remember, we got Hedgecock right before the opener in 2007.
I do remember Dave Meggitt had 3 fumbles in a preseason game his rookie year, but JJ doesn't look like Meggitt.
Huge difference........
JJ isn't ready. Specials, or in the passing game. He sits a year, but is no way getting cut.
Its almost as if hes being judged against the all world pre injury Phillips which is largely just a figment of peoples imagination and did not exist
Hes a nice player, probably the most sound tackler on the defense although people will focus on a whiff in the Eagles game last season. He'll be fine
Some of you don't recognize it when its good.
There are people here who will basically explain away every interception hes ever had as being on someone other than him
But he's also close to 6'3.Runs like that, best tackling safety I had seen in awhile.Good ball skills(although my only evidence of that is the Torry Holt near interception from his rookie year).
Tom needs to fix this...if anything can get him in trouble, this is it.
tyleraimee : 11:10 pm
yes you are right.
Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw combined for 2000 plus yards rushing, and 17 rushing TD's last season, so....
IMO
Jets deserve credit for playing very well tonight too. People like to look at it from their teams perspective only, but their first team D had a lot to do with our struggles. This defense ate Tom Brady up and spit him out twice last year. They'll do this to a lot of passing offenses
Preseason is all about experience, and they got some good work in tonight..
we squashed the jets 1st O
the jets played to win the game, we played to test talent
they got the benefit of a couple of brutal calls on their scoring drive. kick return should have come back, they should have gone 4 and out after a fumble, and then their first play after was a pretty brutal hold by Plax to open it up.
both offenses were bad, honestly theirs was worth. both D played very well.
We ran the ball well.
WR were getting open on both Cro and Revis.
Defense was outstanding.
Eli did make some good throws.
Clean up some things here and there with the passing game, and I am ready for the season.
The Specials looked like special ed tonight. Just awful.
In any case i was speaking mostly about their defense vs our first team O, not the teams as a whole, although their first team did leave with a lead
and declared a down by contact. nothing else to it. that coupled with a whole backside full of holding on the return.
I see no way you could argue their offense was worse than ours. They didn't move the ball as much but they
A) didn't turn it over, we did twice
B) Got into the endzone, we didn't, not even against their second team defense
A full-strength defense let the Eagles score 21 points in 7 minutes.
Who should be bitching?
the Giants offense did exactly what the Jets defense was designed to give them
to say that the Giants offense did well because they moved between the twenties is really not understanding what was going on
the Jets played Jets football and won exactly the way Rex expects to win
The Jets? They had a nice kick return and a pass to Holmes. That's about it.
The Giants offense tonight got smothered
You would have been happier if they played like the Jets? I sure wouldn't.
The only thing the Giants did wrong in that first half was the 2 terrible throws by Eli. But they also had a lot of very good plays on offense and defense. A lot more than the Jets.
Plax looked slow and was getting covered by non-CB's, LDT looked like toast, Sanchez didn't do anything (although admittedly doing nothing is better than throwing a wheelroute into double coverage)....
we moved the ball, just in typical Giants fashion, we found a way to minimize the points scored out of it
Except in the only two areas that really count. Scoreboard, and turnover differential, which after scoreboard is the one area which decides games in the NFL more than anything else
The 2 today? I'm OK with it. It gives him more to look at and "self correct" as they keep saying.
Overall, the Giants offense and defense looked better. No question about it.
When they're running different groups of players out there you just look for some positives on both ends. And we had plenty. Much more than the Jets.
Hands down, the Giants were the better team in the first half. I thought this was a good showing for the Giants.
The interceptions have to stop, period
first turnovers period, I think. it's more "what did you do for me lately" stuff.
people see something and have a pavlovian response to it.
Think we need to re-assess Jernigan as our PR.
it's not exactly as if there has been a plague of TO's in the preseason.
it's a bit of an overreaction. the stuff in the game thread is a mega overreaction.
they were sloppy. communication wasn't great. Jets DBs were good, even the second teamers. shit happens. it's a short camp.
The best ball this team has ever played was during the 07 playoff run and the 08 regular season when Eli ceased being a turnover machine for a short time.
but you know where I want to go. lol.
although I think Eli's per throw is a tiny bit higher, so I guess he could always take the record if he doesn't know when to go away.
it's an overreaction. if he starts backfooting and not standing in during regular season games this year, then I'll be concerned.
The bottom line is this shit needs to cease though
but I just think today was a massive overreaction, a post traumatic stress deal of sorts.
did Pats fans go bananas this week because Brady kept getting bounced off the turf and again looked lost when he was getting hit? I dunno, maybe they did. that's another negative trend by a QB, obviously Brady has a far superior track record, but when this happens, they just don't win.

I think same thing happens to GB altho the also had a great 2007. I think they have a dominant 13-3 type year but dont repeat.
I hope Eli is on the same page with the WRs come the Skins game.
Special teams continues to be a joke & a black eye for this franchise.
Special teams, I'm not as concerned. Jernigan won't be returning punts during the regular season, Lloyd probably won't be our kicker, and I think Devin Thomas is better than what he showed last night.

a higher level than our guys,IMO. And I was disappointed our OLine
could not get that goal line First down.
Finally, I don't trust our passing game. It is proven to be too risky.
