Best Giants offensive linemen of the Super Bowl era

Life Long Giants Fan : 9/28/2011 5:29 am
This weekend I rewatched the Giants 1990 season playoff victories vs the Bears and the 49ers.

I was impressed with the number of plays highlighted where Jumbo Elliott knocked the guy he was blocking back 5 yards. He was really terrific in those games.

I was wondering who is the best Giants offensive lineman of the Super Bowl era or perhaps who are the best Giants of the Super Bowl era at each of the five offensive line positions?
Off the top of my head at 6AM

I will go from left to right. Jumbo, William Roberts, Oates, Snee and MacKenzie.

Close call at center but Oates was better over a longer time than O'Hara. Same with Snee over Ron Stone although for the years played, I think Stone was more consistent (better pass blocker).

Jumbo was most dominant.
Oates
Mike in Boston : 9/28/2011 6:15 am : link
and O'hara is not a close call. Nothing against O'Hara who was an excellent center. But look at tapes of any big Joe Morris run of the mid 1980's and you are fairly likely to see that Oates has put at least on defender on the ground. he was probably the best OL the Giants had in the period.
For the record

I voted for the true position (left guard and right guard versus taking two guards).

Seubert also deserves some consideration at left guard. Basically the 3 interior positions had some debate. The tackles were clear cut winners.

You are probably right that Oates was much better. I think the propensity is to overrate the more recent players unless someone was dominant like LT. O'Hara always had issues with size on the nose. I don't remember that being an issue at all when Oates was playing.
I agree w/ Jumbo
Allen in NJ : 9/28/2011 6:43 am : link
he was at his best and was simply in the zone in the 90' playoffs. He was purely dominant, as was that "6 man" line with Elliot, Roberts, Oates, Moore, Kratch, and Riesenberg. Those guys kicked everybody's asses that season.

William Roberts was a huge part of 2 SB Champs, and Bart Oates was worlds better than O'Hara even though the latter was a pretty good player in his own right.

You guys forget about the likes of Brad Benson and how well he played through the 86' season, and unsung heroes like Bob Kratch and Grey Ruegamer were huge parts of 2 other SB champs. Chris Snee is fast becoming one of the best O-Linemen this franchise has ever had.

My SB O-Line would be the same as SLIM's.
Riesenberg lived next door to one of my friends...

Oates now works at a law firm in Morristown IIRC.
Allen
SLIM : 9/28/2011 6:48 am : link
Brad Benson was a scrapper. He played very well but I didn't forget him. I think he made the ProBowl in '86 for his work against Manley but he is similar to someone like Diehl. Guys you win with and need on your team but don't go into the best conversation.

Roberts wasn't a big part of the '86 team. At that time, he probably was considered a bust. He later moved to guard and played very well.
Brad Benson never gets as much credit as he deserved...

Guy was so damn tough... The epitome of a blue collar offensive lineman... He manhandled Dexter Manley who in his prime was right up there with LT and Reggie White as the best pass rushers in the NFL... Not to mention, the guy put up the goal posts from the old Giants Stadium in front of his car dealership...
Quote:
"I've walked under these goal posts more times than I can count and I still get chills when I think of how many great men passed under this goal post" said the former NY Giant. "I'm proud to be able to preserve and share this important piece of football history with everyone" said Brad.

Honorable mention to a few might-have-beens...

Karl Nelson was on his way to being a very good RT when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's. And Kevin Belcher was making great strides at center before the accident that ended his career and seems to have shortened his life.

Not saying they would have been as good as KMac and Oates, but they deserve a place in team memory.
I pretty much agree with Slim's starting 5
mfsd : 9/28/2011 7:47 am : link
the other thought that popped into my head is Howard Cross was basically another offensive lineman, and a good one at that.

Bavaro in his prime was our best TE ever both blocking and receiving, but with regard to a TE's effect on the running game, Cross deserves some love
Jumbo Elliot gets my vote.
johnnyb : 9/28/2011 8:15 am : link
His dominant performance alone in Super Bowl XXV puts him on top of the list. Not sure the Giants win that game if Elliot doesn't neutralize Bruce Smith.

The young center- Brian Williams?- was a hell of a lineman. Too bad he got hurt early in his career and we were never able to see his full potential.
Simply great!!!

great times!!!!!Jumbo...Benson...Nelson OBTW I nick named one of my pop warner players Jumbo in 91 and he's still called that today...(Cary, NC popwarner CFF champs).
Bavaro and Carthon
ada34ada : 9/28/2011 8:26 am : link
really helped that running game, so it was like having two extra linemen.
Good call on many here, especially Karl Nelson.
BlueLou : 9/28/2011 9:57 am : link
Well on his way to being a dominant RT when the illness set him back.

BTW include Bavaro as a "top OL". Surely.

before the got Oates and Godfrey from the World football League
SLIM, Allen, Frank
Matt M. : 9/28/2011 10:11 am : link
SLIM/Allen - You are both wrong. Roberts wasn';t a big part of the 86 SB team and he wasn't a bust. He was a rookie who did little to nothing that year.

Frank - It was the USFL.

How were Kratch and Reguemer part of 2 SB winners? Kratch played for one and Grey played on 1 loser.
I think I would go with SLIM's OL
Matt M. : 9/28/2011 10:16 am : link
Elliott, Roberts, Oates, Snee, McKenzie.

Nelson would be my backup at RT and Benson at LT. O'Hara my backup OC. Diehl a backup G/T with another being Stone.
William Roberts was a road grader.
Crispino : 9/28/2011 10:27 am : link
The biggest lower body I've ever seen. The other players referred to him as Big Ass William Roberts.

lol
Jumbo
PaulN : 9/28/2011 12:44 pm : link
He was the best, Oats was second. From the 86 team I would say it was Godfrey, when he started, the entire running game improved dramatically, i remember his first game was against the Redskins and the giants kicked ass, and they were dogs that game, maybe in 85. He was not popular, but he was very good.
Roberts
Phil in LA : 9/28/2011 12:52 pm : link
was outstanding. He was always underrated because he flopped in a shortish look at tackle. but he was a terrific guard. More consistent than Jumbo, better size than Oates.

Thank you!
Williams was a good center

I'd put him up there with Elliot and Roberts.

the only OT to win Offensive Player of Week, ever?

I believe he won it that week in 86 after keeping Manley off Simms in the second meeting.

Kinda wonder how Simms didn't win it..three TD's!?

WE went to the Super Bowl in 86, 90, 2000, 2007

No you're wrong. Roberts was drafted in 1984 (second of two 1st round picks) as a tackle. He didn't do much in 1984. Missed all of 1985 and was a reserve for a couple of years after that. They finally switched him to guard and he played lights out for awhile. Parcells basically said that he was very patient in not cutting him because he always saw the talent and effort although it didn't translate on the field for awhile.

The 86 draft was the defensive draft ... Dorsey, Collins/Pepper/Lasker/Howard...
