A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that Andy Reid will have to fire defensive coordinator Juan Castillo in order to stay on as Eagles head coach.
The rumor in Philly is that Steve Spagnuolo will replace Castillo, allowing Reid to hang on for at least one more season. Many Eagles fans want Reid gone, but it would be in the organization's best interests to keep most of the offensive staff because of the monetary commitment to Michael Vick. Castillo has been an utter flop in his transition from O-Line coach to D-Coordinator. He has not showed an ability to maximize his personnel, often playing "man" corners like Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in zone coverage.

But not really
2. If he does get canned, no other team offers him a HC gig. A team with better talent than the Rams might take a chance on him and there are likely to be 5 or 6 HC vacancies this year.
3. The Giants don't swoop him up themselves. The Maras definitely realize what it'd mean if he's in Philly.
I'm sure he has a soft spot for the NYG.
Spags may or may not be HC material. He's a good DC, but he may not be a good HC.
I think Spags could be a really good HC, but if he's fired he's not going to get a shot for a few years. That might benefit him too.
He was good here, not great here. So, would I like him back as DC, yes. But, that is not to say, I think he is indispensable or that he will automatically transform Philly's D.
Let us remember one other thing. Castillo is a scapegoat. Philly's D has not been awful as advertised. It has, with the offense, contributed to a lot of fourth quarter meltdowns. The offense has had some brutal turnovers. Maclin has cost the Eagles about three games all by himself. And, the defensive personnel in Philly is very soft, like ours, up the middle. Next year, it is unlikely that they have either DRC or Samuel and Nnamdi will be 31 and he looks 30 this year.
And it's not like helping Reid helps him. Reid will probably stay for a while, because the Eagles have invested their franchise in Vick...and without Andy Reid, Vick probably reverts back to Ron Mexico status. Tom is more likely going to either be let go, or get his last contract.
In the end, as it always does, it will come to money. If the Giants FO 1) Forces Tom to fire PF, and 2) comes up with more money than Philly, then Spags comes here. The Giants, I think are a better situation for him...he has more talent here, and either would have the inside track, or become a "hot coordinator" again.
We're going to have to wait a couple of weeks to see how it pans out. A lot of things can change in the month of December.
