Report: Eagles looking to hire Spags as DC

DanMetroMan : 12/4/2011 11:15 am
A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that Andy Reid will have to fire defensive coordinator Juan Castillo in order to stay on as Eagles head coach.
The rumor in Philly is that Steve Spagnuolo will replace Castillo, allowing Reid to hang on for at least one more season. Many Eagles fans want Reid gone, but it would be in the organization's best interests to keep most of the offensive staff because of the monetary commitment to Michael Vick. Castillo has been an utter flop in his transition from O-Line coach to D-Coordinator. He has not showed an ability to maximize his personnel, often playing "man" corners like Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in zone coverage.

We have Perry Fewell!
can never play too much

Fire Coughlin and hire Spags as head coach!

Just kidding

But not really
we've
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/4/2011 11:18 am : link
been speculating on this for some time... makes perfect sense.
The Giants need to do everything they can to prevent this.

I'm going to be irate if they allow Spags to go there.

Giants have no control over this.
Maybe the Rams give Spags

one more year
Nightmare scenario is
Dave in Hoboken : 12/4/2011 11:20 am : link
Philly hires Spags as their DC, and the Giants keep their current coaching staff, or just fire Fewell to placate the fanbase. We need an overhaul of our staff.
They can't offer him their DC job and give him the assistant HC title?
NyquistX3 : 12/4/2011 11:22 am : link
?
meh, several things need to happen for that to occur
Overseer : 12/4/2011 11:22 am : link
1. Spagnuolo gets fired in St. Louis. I think chances are better that he gets one more year.

2. If he does get canned, no other team offers him a HC gig. A team with better talent than the Rams might take a chance on him and there are likely to be 5 or 6 HC vacancies this year.

3. The Giants don't swoop him up themselves. The Maras definitely realize what it'd mean if he's in Philly.

Danny Kanell : 12/4/2011 11:22 am : link
Why does it make perfect sense? The place he became a hero and won a title very well might have the exact same position open?

Both teams have a huge hole
LauderdaleMatty : 12/4/2011 11:23 am : link
at LB. I'm sure Spags would do a better job than Castillo but like the Giants some of the issue is the willingness to pretend that position doesn't matter.

Coughlin isn't going to fire Fewell.

Sorry for the double post.

This can't happen. Please God.
why
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/4/2011 11:24 am : link
should Spags get one more year in St. Louis? He's done a really bad job as a HC there.
Danny
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/4/2011 11:24 am : link
because he has stronger ties to Philly than the Giants.
No he doesn't
Overseer : 12/4/2011 11:25 am : link
He made his name in NY. Positional coaches are after thoughts in the NFL.

I'm sure he has a soft spot for the NYG.
OK, but to say they have no control over it isn't true.
NyquistX3 : 12/4/2011 11:26 am : link
They can block him from going there by giving him a job on this staff.
There is zero chance Spags would come back to the Gmen ...
Boy Cord : 12/4/2011 11:26 am : link
... as DC. He already has that pelt on the wall. Anything short of duplicating what he did in 2007 would tarnish his legacy.
Agree that TC won't fire Fewell
Dave in Hoboken : 12/4/2011 11:26 am : link
The guy just absolutely refuses to fire any of his coordinators (see Quinn, Tom).
Eric, because he inherited a HORRIBLE 2-14 team?
Britt in VA : 12/4/2011 11:26 am : link
That type of change doesn't happen overnight.
I for one
blueblood'11 : 12/4/2011 11:26 am : link
will have to question the Giant's sanity or insanity if they allow this to happen. They have to know that Spags is walking the plank. And he will most assuredly be available. How can they not have in the back of their minds to fire Fewell at seasons end and make a real play to lure him back. I realize if you fire Fewell and Spags is not reeled in, you need to replace Fewell. Well, my answer to that is, there has to be many more coordinators in waiting better then this guy.
Eric
Danny Kanell : 12/4/2011 11:26 am : link
He does? He had strong ties to Jim Johnson.
Britt
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/4/2011 11:27 am : link
Yup, but they didn't improve at all this year. In fact, they regressed terribly.

Spags may or may not be HC material. He's a good DC, but he may not be a good HC.
...
SanFranGiantsFan : 12/4/2011 11:28 am : link
Coughlin should worry about his own job. If we miss the playoffs, he's likely a goner.
Same thing could have been said about Belichick in Cleveland.
Britt in VA : 12/4/2011 11:28 am : link
.
I'd bevery surprised to see Spags
LauderdaleMatty : 12/4/2011 11:28 am : link
back in St Louis next year.
...
SanFranGiantsFan : 12/4/2011 11:28 am : link
The same stuff was said about Bill Belichick. And look how he did his next time around.

I think Spags could be a really good HC, but if he's fired he's not going to get a shot for a few years. That might benefit him too.
NyquistX3
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/4/2011 11:29 am : link
You can't "block" someone from going someplace by offering him a job. You are suggesting that he would automatically pick the Giants over the Eagles. That's just dumb.
we'll
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/4/2011 11:30 am : link
see in a month. My guess is he ends up in Philly.
You can if it's the head job.
Britt in VA : 12/4/2011 11:30 am : link

Maybe Spags is not as good on defense
SIMMSXXI : 12/4/2011 11:30 am : link
as we thought. After all, his record in St. Louis is pathetic. I think as FMIC pointed out, it has not been mediocre like some good coaches, who have achieved later success with other teams, i.e., Bill B. in Cleveland. It has been terrible.

He was good here, not great here. So, would I like him back as DC, yes. But, that is not to say, I think he is indispensable or that he will automatically transform Philly's D.

Let us remember one other thing. Castillo is a scapegoat. Philly's D has not been awful as advertised. It has, with the offense, contributed to a lot of fourth quarter meltdowns. The offense has had some brutal turnovers. Maclin has cost the Eagles about three games all by himself. And, the defensive personnel in Philly is very soft, like ours, up the middle. Next year, it is unlikely that they have either DRC or Samuel and Nnamdi will be 31 and he looks 30 this year.
Give Spags
muhajir : 12/4/2011 11:30 am : link
that 2 mil a yr contract he had before he left and he'll sign here over Philly. Ties don't matter as much as $$. If the FO really want him they simply have to outbid Philly for his services. Plus he has a better chance of taking over as the next head coach over here considering Coughlins age.
Spags was good, but not great here?
Dave in Hoboken : 12/4/2011 11:31 am : link
Simms, please, just go away. Thanks.
The only thing that I think works in Spags
Sneakers O'toole : 12/4/2011 11:31 am : link
favor in St. Louis is whether or not their ownership will want to pay dead money to a fired coach. They may choose to let one moreyar go by for that reason alone. It's about the only reason I can think of
moreyar
Sneakers O'toole : 12/4/2011 11:32 am : link
that horrible example of typing should read "more year"
Simms, wtf are you talking about
Overseer : 12/4/2011 11:32 am : link
the playoff 07 and 08 D was fantastic. His blitzes were things of beauty.
Eric
Reb8thVA : 12/4/2011 11:32 am : link
The fact that Coughlin won't can Fewell ,especially if Spags is available as DC is why I am leanig toward the idea it might be time for the Giants and Coughlin to part ways
Spags ties to the Eagles may be a bit overstated
JohnF : 12/4/2011 11:35 am : link
I'm not sure he's all that friendly with Reid; didn't Reid stop him from jumping to Minny the year he left for us (for the Viking DC job?). I'd still be ticked over that, if I were Steve.

And it's not like helping Reid helps him. Reid will probably stay for a while, because the Eagles have invested their franchise in Vick...and without Andy Reid, Vick probably reverts back to Ron Mexico status. Tom is more likely going to either be let go, or get his last contract.

In the end, as it always does, it will come to money. If the Giants FO 1) Forces Tom to fire PF, and 2) comes up with more money than Philly, then Spags comes here. The Giants, I think are a better situation for him...he has more talent here, and either would have the inside track, or become a "hot coordinator" again.
JohnF
Eric from BBI : Admin : 12/4/2011 11:36 am : link
the Giants' defensive coordinator position is not vacant.

Yes
Sneakers O'toole : 12/4/2011 11:36 am : link
Reid and the Eagles blocked Spags from interviewing the year before the Giants hired him
Neither is the Rams head job....
Britt in VA : 12/4/2011 11:37 am : link
neither are a lot of jobs.

We're going to have to wait a couple of weeks to see how it pans out. A lot of things can change in the month of December.
If the Giants make the playoffs
Sneakers O'toole : 12/4/2011 11:37 am : link
all of this could be moot anyway for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that the Eagles and the Rams may make their moves before the Giants even play a playoff game.
John
muhajir : 12/4/2011 11:37 am : link
Well said on both points.
Eric,
Arnie D. : 12/4/2011 11:37 am : link
why say the Giants have no control over this? If TC stays, refuses to fire Fewell and doesn't offer Spags the DC job is a choice.
And playoffs may
Sneakers O'toole : 12/4/2011 11:38 am : link
cement the Giants coaching staff in place
Eric
NyquistX3 : 12/4/2011 11:38 am : link
Give me a break. I said "The Giants need to do everything they can to prevent this," and "they can (not will) block him from going there by giving him a job on this staff". I never once implied that he would automatically pick the Giants over the Eagles, and merely suggested that they make every effort possible to stop it from happening. They do have some control over whether or not he goes there by offering him their DC position and spicing it up by giving him some other title such as assistant HC. If they do all this and he STILL picks the Eagles over the Giants, then I hold the Giants at zero fault.
