Report: Eagles looking to hire Spags as DC

DanMetroMan : 12/4/2011 11:15 am
A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that Andy Reid will have to fire defensive coordinator Juan Castillo in order to stay on as Eagles head coach.
The rumor in Philly is that Steve Spagnuolo will replace Castillo, allowing Reid to hang on for at least one more season. Many Eagles fans want Reid gone, but it would be in the organization's best interests to keep most of the offensive staff because of the monetary commitment to Michael Vick. Castillo has been an utter flop in his transition from O-Line coach to D-Coordinator. He has not showed an ability to maximize his personnel, often playing "man" corners like Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in zone coverage.

I see SIMMSXXI
Wuphat : 12/4/2011 11:38 am : link
is adding to his ever increasing list of demonstrations of his inability to evaluate coaching talent.
Eric's right..
Sean in PA : 12/4/2011 11:39 am : link
Spags has ties to Philly and there is a lot of talent there. He can go there and re-establish his stock. As someone else mentioned, he's already done it here...why come back in the same role? If Spags is back here, it will be as HC.
Some rumors that the Rams
PEEJ : 12/4/2011 11:39 am : link
will move back to LA.

Rams keep Spags for another year and dump him for a "name" coach when they're ready to move
I'm guessing it won't be Coughlin's decision
Greg from LI : 12/4/2011 11:41 am : link
Since I'm reasonably certain Coughlin will be out of a job too
Hopefully not...
arcarsenal : 12/4/2011 11:41 am : link
But there's not a whole lot the Giants can do there.

He got offered a HC job while he was here, he took it.. if he becomes available again, the only thing we can do is potentially offer more money. Ultimately, it'll be up to him.
maximize his personal
ghost718 : 12/4/2011 11:43 am : link
That sounds familiar

But seriously, you can't believe everything that comes out of Philly. We'll see what happens at seasons end.

I do think it's going to be harder to get Spagnuolo a second time around.
if we stand pat with our current coaches and the Eagles get Spags,
dangerousrappingfrog : 12/4/2011 11:44 am : link
will not win the division any time soon. I am willing to bet my life on it. It is time to move on as an organization. It was a nice run but change is inevitable and frankly, very much needed at this point.
Also, don't forget that Steve's wife
JohnF : 12/4/2011 11:46 am : link
really liked living in the NY Metro area. That is another factor in our favor.

If Tom misses the playoffs, you can bet the house he only comes back if he agrees to clean out the coaching staff. There is no way in hell that the Giants will allow Tom to come back with all the current assistants, especially if the defense continues to quit on PF.

And I doubt seriously that Tom, as loyal as he is, will choose to quit if he can't keep the current staff. He's no lock to get another job at his age, even with his record. He was forced to get rid of Hufnagel, this is no different.
Would love to get Spags back if possible
uberpwnage : 12/4/2011 11:48 am : link
He got the most out of his players when he was here...something the last two coordinators have failed at doing.
IMO
mrvax : 12/4/2011 11:49 am : link
Eagles fire Reid and Spags becomes their new head coach. The Giants could only compete if they offered the HC job also and were willing to out bid the Eagles.

Spags will never be the Giants DC again.
One last thing
JohnF : 12/4/2011 11:53 am : link
John Mara really wants to keep Tom. I think, missing the playoffs will put a tremendous amount of pressure on John Mara to fire Tom, but hiring Spags back at DC might make the difference to the fan base, or at least enough cover to all John to make a very unpopular decision.

Again, all bets are off if the decision is already made to get rid of Tom if the team fails to win the division. A new HC will want his own choices for OC/DC.
Coughlin won't fire Fewell
TrueBlue'02 : 12/4/2011 11:56 am : link
which is another reason he should be fired.

We are wasting Eli's best years based on "stability".

This is becoming a joke of an organization.
A whole lot of posters don't really know much about what is going
BigBlueBuff : 12/4/2011 11:59 am : link
on here in Rams land. If you want to talk injuries, the Rams injury list makes the Giants list look good by comparison. It's been one string of problems after another for St. Louis.

What you will also never see in St. Louis is any of the players blaming each other, chirping about coaches or schemes, or any cracks in the facade. The Rams are a team that still is sticking together and if the ownership values that (and can see it), then it is entirely possible that this staff will get another year.

So before we go off spouting about the "terrible job" Spags has done in St. Louis, it might be worthwhile to actually look at the facts.
IIt is tampering for the
PhilD : 12/4/2011 11:59 am : link
Egles to say they are interested in Spags.
This is just a rumor. If it is true the commissioner would be all over them.

Sneakers O'toole : 12/4/2011 12:00 pm : link
Are you hearing that the ownership is behind Spags in St. Louis?
...
SanFranGiantsFan : 12/4/2011 12:03 pm : link
Well, if we miss the playoffs for a third straight season & Mara gives this 'stability' garbage to the fans as a reason for keeping TC, BBI will explode.

If the ship be sinking, in the immortal words of Michael Ray Richardson, it's time to bail.
I like how they are proactive.
AnishPatel : 12/4/2011 12:05 pm : link
They didn't see the other DC as a good fit, and fired him. They made another stupid hire at DC, and now looks like they will fire him. I like that. I wish we'd be more proactive. If someone is a bad fit, recognize that quicker, and make a move.
Well, we did with Sheridan....
arcarsenal : 12/4/2011 12:06 pm : link
He was gone after one year. Fewell may be gone after 2.

Fewell deserved another year.. he really wasn't bad last year. But if we continue to suck defensively, it'll probably be time for a change and I think a change will be made.
Sheridan was one and done.
Britt in VA : 12/4/2011 12:07 pm : link
.
Well we had to with him.
AnishPatel : 12/4/2011 12:12 pm : link
Christ the defense totally gave up. We were going crapped on for 40 points. But we tended to keep Hufangel, Lewis, and now Fewell if he comes back yet for another year. Sheridan was an all around shit show. What was it 10 games of 30 or more points and 4-6 I think of 40 or more points? Something like that maybe. Pathetic DC. We still have fucking Quinn!

I get the sense that the Eagles are quick. It's almost they realize, ok this was a bad hire, let's fix it quickly and find the right fit.
Today is a big game
beatrixkiddo : 12/4/2011 12:13 pm : link
for Fewell, he really has to show he is worth keeping. If this team plays like they did in NO, you can count on him not having a job next year, and possibly even a change in our HC.

If Spags is available somehow, The Giants need to seriously take a look at him as our future HC, you cannot let that man go back to Philly.

It would be poetic justice if the Giants win Spags in the offseason over Philly, with last season the Eagles taking away Smith from us. I'd prefer the Coaching genius over the key player.
If he's released by St. Louis
bradshaw44 : 12/4/2011 12:23 pm : link
There is no reason the Giants shouldn't consider firing Fewell and hiring Spags contingent on him being the heir apparent to the HC spot. Spags had success here and I think he would love to come back to the city that absolutely loved him.
If Coughlin gets the axe
giantranger : 12/4/2011 12:23 pm : link
what ar ethe chances Gilbride gets promoted to HC? Giants fans would not be happy but perhaps he'd get rid of Fewell and seek his own Dc.
Spags
AnishPatel : 12/4/2011 12:24 pm : link
didn't do anything to deserve to be our HC. If he goes back to philly it's because he has roots with that team. I am not willing to make him a HC with such little experience and a bad showing there.
Quick to make changes?
bois : 12/4/2011 12:25 pm : link
You mean like the Giants were with Sheridan?

If
DanMetroMan : 12/4/2011 12:25 pm : link
Gilbride is the next HC, BBI will meltdown lol
Pretty rare a coordinator is re-hired by the team he left
JonC : 12/4/2011 12:26 pm : link
Fans tend to look at the past too easily, the professionals tend to look forward to new opportunities. I'd be a bit surprised if he returned to NYG unless it was as HC.
I hope Coughlin, Gilbride and Fewell are all back
bois : 12/4/2011 12:27 pm : link
Because it'll mean things worked out for the '11 Giants.
well

that would suck something awful
This is tampering
Steve in South Jersey : 12/4/2011 1:32 pm : link
Eagles should lose a draft choice and pay a fine.
How the heck
Doomster : 12/4/2011 2:11 pm : link
can Spags ever live up to the legacy that he left? The pressure on him would be tremendous.....

But Fewell has to go, and if, I say if, Spags is released, then he may be the best option for us, if he wants to face the pressure of returning to this team....
Juan Castillo is a scapegoat
Modus Operandi : 12/4/2011 2:35 pm : link
And Spags is overrated.

Alrighty then....
Pay whatever it takes
moze1021 : 12/4/2011 2:36 pm : link
to keep him from Philly. That would just be disastrous.
I don't see where you guys are getting that this is tampering
Wuphat : 12/4/2011 2:39 pm : link
No one from the Eagles organization is quoted as saying that they're interested in Spags.

It quotes a "league source" which could be just about anyone and that there are rumors in Philly.

Well, there's rumors in NY as well.

This is not tampering. It's rumor.
Exactly
SIMMSXXI : 12/4/2011 2:41 pm : link
Spags was good here, but he has a Lombardi reputation among the "knowledgeable" on BBI. Would I want him instead of Fewell, Yes. But some people on here are just nuts. I remember the second dallas loss at home in 07 all of the fans screaming this D never gets big stops. Spags is a bright, good coach. If he went to the Eagles it would suck, but they are not getting Bellichick. I can promise you that.
Mo
SIMMSXXI : 12/4/2011 2:44 pm : link
How has spags done in St. Louis? Have his D's done well? And, if by overrated you mean Lombardi and Bellichick and Buddy Ryan, yes he is overrared. If you mean good to very good DC that describes him very well.
I dont think there's any chance we get Spags back.
GloryDayz : 12/4/2011 2:57 pm : link
If we make the playoffs, Philly or some other team out of the playoffs will sign him quick. A team with an incumbent HC who wants a new DC.

But even if we dont make the playoffs... Giants will take a few days to decide on a new HC, then once they decide on a HC would they force Spags on the HC? Or will he want to intervue a few candidates of his own? By then he'd probably be gone too. Spags wont stay in the market long if he's ok going back to DC.

Now if he decides to test the market for another HC opportunity, maybe we have a shot if no team offer him the HC job.
I hope
Phil in LA : 12/4/2011 2:58 pm : link
that doesn't happen.

You called him overrated. Not me. Right after you told us to remember Castillo was a scapegoat.

Now you want me to explain your comments for you?
I think there is a better chance Spags and Coughlin
sexymoves : 12/4/2011 3:25 pm : link
Both get axed and Spags ends up in NY as our new HC.

This will likely happen and as much as it sucks...

Unless our defense improves dramatically next year it won't matter.

I hope Spags remembers
Sarcastic Sam : 12/4/2011 6:48 pm : link
how Philly wouldn't let him interview for DC positions until his contract expired.

And then tried to force him to sign a new contract as LB coach over a weekend.
