If the Bucs merely wanted to satisfy the Rooney Rule, they would interview an available minority candidate, just to get it out of the way. They wouldn't wait on a guy who might not be available to interview until mid February.
I hope everyone saying "good", "excellent", etc...
Realizes that there is a potentially shitty scenario in that if we continue this playoff run with the D playing at a high level and Fewell is hired away as a HC elsewhere, Spags may also be off the market as well by that point.
I agree that if we did win it all, it would be a lot easier to accept whoever the next hire was.. but there's still a chance the scenario I mentioned could happen if we only get to the NFC Title game or even lose in the SB.
If there's a better way to diversify the coaching ranks, I'd love to hear it. Rooney rule gives minority candidates a shot. Still not enough minority HC coaches imo.
Then I saw a show with some coaches talking about it. They talked about how sometimes getting the interview can change the mind of an owner just looking to bring a guy in to satisfy the rule. They also talked about how owners, GMs and other coaches all talk and sometimes a guy who doesn't get a job, but has a good interview, will then get opportunities because word spreads about their interview and how well they came across.
After hearing these coaches (don't remember which ones to be honest) talk about all of the possibile opportunites that can come from an interview, even one where a job is not landed. So while I completely understand where people who are against the rule are coming from, these guys kind of sold me on it.
"There are not enough minority candidates". Why should there be a quota of minority candidates. It should go to the people most qualified. If there are more qualified white candidates than so be it.
...when you can hire Dewayne Walker, currently the head coach at New Mexico State. I'm telling you, if someone gives this guy a chance, he's going to excel.
Spags full body of work was much better than Fewell's.
And Spags overall philosphies on D just seemed to fit this personell/team like a glove. Though I am certainly happy with the 'better late than never' turnaround, if Fewell goes Spags is a no-brainer and likely upgrade.
...and the defense plays well yet again against an elite offense, I don't see how their regular season ranking is more relevant. It would then be pretty apparent that whatever the reason, the defense has turned a pretty significant corner.
If people would still want to run Fewell out of town at that point, I'd be scratching my head. I'd never be unhappy if we got Spags back.. I just would be careful not to put every egg in that basket because if he's hired before our season is done, we may end up with neither.
And Spags' scheme "fitting this personnel like a glove" is irrelevant.
The remaining players from Spags' tenure here would probably be Tuck, Webster, Thomas, Phillips and Goff. More than half of the players likely will not have been here his last go around so it's impossible to know that his scheme will "fit like a glove".
We're all big fans of Spags and would like to see him back here.. but I'm starting to feel like people on this board are so anxious to rush Fewell out of town in the midst of a potential playoff run and aren't being realistic. Spags simply may not wait around for us and he might take another job. Then we're all going to wish we could have kept Fewell (if we at least get to the NFC title game).
have schematic versatility but more importantly when you look at the overall it sure looks like we have more players better suited to bump and man vs exotic zone coverages and/or frequent cover 2 schemes.
Im not rushing Fewell out the door as I am encouraged by the late turnaround thus far but it isnt too farfetched to think Spags wouldn't be as good or better here should Fewell go.
So much of this conversation hinges on where our season winds up.
It's almost pointless to even have it now because the difference between getting beat this weekend and making another big time run is so immense that it will completely sway most people's opinions.
If Fewell gets hired elsewhere as a result of a SB run, Spags would be the ultimate consolation (if you could even call it that).
My point all along is that we may not have that opportunity. Spags may be off the market by then and if Fewell leaves, it's not going to be easy to find a quality DC and have our guys learn a brand new system for next year.
should Fewell continue to 'prove himself' and at least have a good defensive showing vs the Packers and possibily more, I agree that if he leaves AND we don't get Spags we may be certainly worse of than before.
Lot of if's but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Spagnuolo is keeping his options open regarding the Giants DC job in spite of the Eagle rumors. No news is good news in this area. He knows he will get a job somewhere regardless. Why not wait and see how it plays out ?
I noticed all the candidates they were reportedly considering were Caucasian.
Then what?
At least not until next August. :)
This isn't the the 1950s/60s where every most teams would reject a minority solely due to their skin color.
