Photographic Look at Poor Officiating from Sunday

Giants 101 : 1/16/2012 8:06 am
I don't want anyone here to think I am self-promoting as that's not the case. If anyone has issue with me posting this here, tell me and I'll take it down.

I just wanted to put this up here so people who had to listen to the game can see firsthand how bad some of the calls were.

Moreover, if anyone remembers any other poor (and obvious) calls that were made and/or missed, and has some screen shots to them, please feel free to contribute.

The Giants did win, and that's something to be proud of and something to celebrate. But calls like this, if they continue, will eventually cost them or another team.

I really hope the Giants send your blog to the NFL league office. The officiating was a travesty yesterday and the Giants had to overcome both the Super Bowl champs and the officiating.
This is
I Love Clams Casino : 1/16/2012 8:11 am : link
actually quite alarming.....
That needs to go to the league office
Blue Blood : 1/16/2012 8:13 am : link
because that was some of the worst officiating I have ever seen. Eli was hit late A LOT and it never got called. Green Bay didnt get ONE holding penalty not ONE.. and I saw at least 5-6 sitting at home 900 miles away on a 32" TV...
Try and attach these solutions too
GMenLTS : 1/16/2012 8:15 am : link
A. Full time refs, regular training, strict standards, strict eval, etc....
B. Centralized Replay

Pointing out flaws in a system is a good tool for change but proposing no solution while pointing out flaws seems futile
Actually, Green Bay
Wuphat : 1/16/2012 8:18 am : link
was called for one holding call.
yea
GMenLTS : 1/16/2012 8:19 am : link
and it wasn't close to their worst offense of that matter.

I thought JPP was going to rip off an official's head begging for a flag
i couldnt imagine
gmen4ever : 1/16/2012 8:21 am : link
how I or any Giant fans would feel had we lost that game due to the officials. The final score should have been 37-6...this is terrible.
don't know if I saw this right
aquidneck : 1/16/2012 8:22 am : link
But on Packers first (FG) scoring drive weren't they given a first down on a pass play over the middle where the ball was clearly dropped as the went to the ground.
as the receiver
aquidneck : 1/16/2012 8:23 am : link
Went to the ground.
I couldn't find the on JPP
Giants 101 : 1/16/2012 8:24 am : link
hold when I went back through the game, but I know there was one where he nearly had his jersey ripped right off his back. It allowed Rodgers to scramble for what, if memory serves, was a first down.
As far as I am concerned

the Giants won 37-6 because the REFS helped them to 14 points..

I actually forgot about that play until my Packers fan co-worker brought it up.
IIRC ...

After Eli got that hand in his face he was really thumped in the back ...
I'm glad you included that hands-to-the-face
Greg from LI : 1/16/2012 8:39 am : link
What bugged me was that the replay for that play STARTED with that exact shot, and yet the announcers did not mention it. It was a clear penalty right in front of their faces!
We were screaming cuz Fox
JCin332 : 1/16/2012 8:43 am : link
never showed the replay of the Ware run that should have been a first..

Also was a double screw up because on the hail mary drive they had no timeouts cuz of the Jennings fumble debacle..

LTS I have heard you say this but they need to change this crap and not make these reviews a coaching strategy and go to a replay official who has the power to look at every play and override the guys on the field..
I believe the one holding call against GB

nice blog post. While BBI generally hates self-promoting, your blog post does a fantastic job showing how obvious many of the blown calls were. It's sickening to know that the Giants have been on the short end of this seemingly every single week.
That is a good article

That was the play that JPP threw his hands in the air looking for a holding flag and that dunmb ass Joe Buck commented that he threw his hands in the air because he was amazed with Rodgers ability to escape the pocket. He is dumb.

Giants101- Great job

Who cares if it's self promoting, that was a fantastic review of the officiating gaffes. Can you (or did you) do something similar on the Falcolns game?
Rob
Giants 101 : 1/16/2012 9:28 am : link
We've never done that before, no. It's just something we deemed necessary after watching that all unfold yesterday.

Maybe we should make it a weekly thing?

We left out some of the smaller nonsense that happens in every game and really wanted to focus on the big, obvious stuff.
nah, I don't think you need to do this weekly
Greg from LI : 1/16/2012 9:30 am : link
This was so egregious that it called for in-depth examination, but most games are going to have some errors. They rarely play such a major role in a game.

Either the Refs
BigK : 1/16/2012 9:38 am : link
Are crooked or they are completely incompetent, there are no other options and either way the NFL should be embarrassed. It's a disgrace that the billion dollar NFL allows this to happen week after week.
Which official overruled
sphinx : 1/16/2012 9:40 am : link
the initial call? The two officials on the sideline played it as a fumble and recovery by the Giants.

I can't think of any other time watching NY Giants games
djm : 1/16/2012 11:19 am : link
that I was angry after such a big win. It was 13-10 Giants in the biggest game of the year, the Giants were playing so well and I was literally foaming at the mouf. The refs were downright criminal.

It's not a conspiracy. It's deep rooted flaw in the system and a deep rooted flaw in human nature. The refs are simply selfish, lazy and insecure scumbags. They don't have the balls to admit when they are wrong. And that's just a shame.
The one thing on the Jennings fumble
Scyber : 1/16/2012 11:24 am : link
is that you can't see when the side of his leg/ankle hits the ground. The pic in that blog post seems to show the side of his leg on the ground prior to the knee or elbow hitting. If anything but the hands or feet touch the ground he is down. So it is possible that the side of his leg hit prior to the ball being out. I think it is unlikely though since Fox never showed an angle that would have proved he was down.

From The Record
InTikiITrust : 1/16/2012 11:26 am : link
Ahh there's a good picture
Scyber : 1/16/2012 11:29 am : link
I guess my theory is out the window. of course the refs don't have those photos in the booth so that may have been an issue. Since it was ruled down by contact they would have had to see conclusively that the side of the leg wasn't on the ground when the ball came out. Not sure if there was a video angle that showed that.
The fumble
HBart : 1/16/2012 11:42 am : link
Changes everything.

You can always make excuses for the ref. Its a judgement call, the game moves fast, there are only so many angles, etc. You can then try to rationalize bad calls either with a positive tone (the evidence wasn't 100% conclusive) or a negative tone (lazy, selfish, don't want to self correct).

But the fumble changes everything.

Because now you're talking about a game changing play correctly called on the field, being overturned to an incorrect call, and then completely indisputable visual evidence being ignored to uphold the call.

No, up until yesterday I used to make excuses and rationalize as above - despite alot of evidence that something more nefarious was going on.

But the fumble shows without a doubt that Leavy had premeditated intent to tilt the game in GBs favor.

The question is why, and is the league complicit or is it confined to the refs.

Its really horrible. Although at least now many things become clearer.
From the photo above
TheDream88 : 1/16/2012 11:54 am : link
it does not appear to be a conclusive fumble, at least from the angle in this photo. Very hard to see the ball detached from Jennings arm. I think if we could frame forward a split second we begin to see separation from Jennings and the ball before Jennings is down.

Bad call for sure, but this picture above for me is not conclusive to over turn the call.
The video..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/16/2012 11:55 am : link
is very conclusive.

And that still doesn't expalin on what grounds it was reversed on the field from a fumble to a non-fumble.

Add the pieces together and the questions pile up.

still not sure how the official missed the helmet to helmet contact on Eli after he threw the ball and was turning away from front contact when he got hit in the helmet from a backside rusher

Knowing how the NFL operates it will be immediately yanked just like the excellent video that game out showing the awful officiating that occurred in the first NYG/GB game. Enjoy this while you can boys.

Again, big props to Giants 101.
If anyone saved the video that I'm referring to

I mention the Falcolns game b/c that had clear evidence of incompetence too. Horrible spots, missed pass interference.. And the NFL didn't care as evidenced by the refs performance yesterday.
Don't they have this thing called

I just sent the following e-mail to Goodell...
River Mike : 1/17/2012 2:59 pm : link
Quote:
Dear Mr. Goodell,

I don't know if you or anyone in your office has been monitoring the media and internet discussion of the horrible officiating in the Giants/ Packers game. If you have, i'm sure you have cause for great concern. For the first time in my 50 years of watching the NFL, the integrity of the league is being called into question in a broad based manner. I am not going to re-hash the specific calls, but you should be aware that the reaction is unprecedented.

On the website, BigBlueInteractive.com which I frequent, I have never seen anything like it. They have the usual mix of posters, some conspiracy theorists and flakes, but mostly level header and well educated posters. Typically after a game, a few posters will complain about some calls in the game. They will uaually be told by a large majority of posters to let it go, mistakes happen, officials are human, move on, etc. Not this time. Posters are almost unanimously up in arms, and WE WON THE GAME. Winning is usually the strongest argument for moving on, but these calls were so egregious that many level headed posters are questioning if it's more that human error at work.

Osi hit Rogers' helmet? Where?
RobCarpenter : 1/18/2012 12:48 pm : link
Certainly not when he made contact with Rogers:

sphinx
Big_Score : 1/18/2012 10:26 pm : link
That's what is upsetting. I can't find anywhere who the ref was who overturned the call, or why. If two refs agree with the call then the guy who overrules them sure as hell needs to have a better angle or view of what happened. This is bizarre. By no stretch of the imagination am I a homer or conspiracy guy, but this one simply doesn't pass the smell test. Too strange, especially the league's "explanation". Just too wierd.

Crossing The Yard Marker Between Theory and Fact

I've never been much of a conspiracy theorist but when presented with enough evidence and recorded observations, just as in science, theory becomes accepted as fact. The facts aren’t simply that the NFL doesn’t like the Giants. That would be absurd. What isn’t absurd is this: Wouldn’t the NFL just love to televise a conference championship between the Saints and Packers or, more appropriately, Rodgers vs. Brees, or maybe a Super Bowl gunslingers' duel (Rodgers/Brees vs. Brady)? This past weekend certain calls were made or not made with intent and did clearly not correspond to what actually occurred during play. The Saints were not called for a single penalty against a very stout 49ers team. 63 pass attempts, not one hold, false start or intentional grounding? I know what I saw and know what the officiating crew decided not to see.

When the Giants played the Packers back in week 13 Nicks was constantly being mugged, no calls. Corey Webster was called for an interference that wasn’t, a Ballard TD that wasn’t and Jennings not having possession in the end zone that was, at least the way the refs decided to rule. I feel like I’m forgetting something…Oh yeah, a JPP sack that was nullified due to what can only be described as a phantom call on Williams for illegal use of hands.
And yesterday? How about indisputable, ultra slow motion / stop action video showing Jennings fumble? DJ Ware clearly ran for a big 1st down and the ball was spotted short. Can a player in this new league actually get a hit on a QB anymore if it’s not in the NFL’s “best interest”? I refer to Osi’s roughing penalty that wasn’t. It was as clean a hit as there can be these days; standing straight up, head to the side, shoulder pad to shoulder pad, arm around waist, within a step after Rodgers’ release. Because of that the drive continued and the Packers scored 7. Eli was hit in the back, the defender taking two steps after the release and had hands to his head and facemask at various points in the game…no calls. Baas nearly decapitated with the DT pushing his facemask up and back…no call. JPP constantly held…no calls. Snee called for holding?...BS Were there a slew of calls that went in the Giants favor? No, not in either game.

I feel sorry for what probably is about to happen to the Ravens. Is there a story line in a Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh Super Bowl? Absolutely, but the NFL would rather see an “elite” QB (Brady) in that game. Congrats to the 9er’s who, like the Giants, beat two opponents in the divisional round. I admire their hard-hitting, old school D. Will the Giants get the calls next week to set up a rematch of the 2007 Super Bowl? That too is very possible. I don’t have the ability to see into the future nor do the powers that be in the NFL…But that doesn’t mean they and their officials won’t try to influence the outcomes by favoring future QB matchups over calling fair and balanced football games.

Boy, it’s a good thing this isn’t an election year or I’d really be flipping my wig over something of far greater importance…oh, wait a minute…
