Great quote on the Marshall's famous hit on Montana

Moondwg : 1/30/2012 9:13 am
Q: Leonard, tell me about your hit on Montana.

Quote:
Marshall: Belichick kept saying we had to get the ball back. And all I recall was Jimmy Burt tried to make a play — he wasn’t a Giant that year — and in trying to make a play, he had hit Jeff Hostetler directly on his knee. So we went back to the sideline, I remember [Carl] Banks saying, “OK, Burt took his shot. One of us gets a shot at Montana. We gotta end it. It’s gotta be like, ‘Lights out Irene.’ We gotta end it.” I beat Bubba [Paris] with a pass rush, and then I slipped. And then Tom Rathman drove at my feet and he tried to cut me, and I just continued to crawl and just keep working. I look up, and Montana’s got the ball, and he’s patting to Jerry Rice to keep running. And as soon as he pulls up to throw it, I remember leaving my feet, and that was it.

Banks is the best: Lights out Irene!!!

I thought Marshall killed Montana with that hit..

Quote:
Carson: There were times when I wanted to lose the coin toss, and I wanted to kick off.

Marshall: Just play defense.

Carson: Because we wanted to set the tempo. And I will tell you the God’s honest truth— and people don’t believe this — I felt badly for some of the teams that we played because we ... kicked... their rear ends. And there were guys who would say, “Hold him up, hold him up...”

Marshall: “Hold him up, we want to stroke him.”

Carson: We were so physical, that we just beat people into submission.
Best hit ever

Cool Papa B. : 1/30/2012 9:25 am : link
that after that hit, his chest and ribs hurt so much that he didn't know his hand was broken......WOW!
Montana was nursing a bad back at the time
old timer : 1/30/2012 9:28 am : link
So Marshall knew that hitting Montana from behind like that would destroy him. It was a no mercy, kill shot.
And it would be a 15 yard penalty today
Lawyer in NYC : 1/30/2012 9:30 am : link
Its amazing how much the game has changed. The NFL simply isn't the same league it was in that era, and I doubt it will ever return to that level of intensity.
I know they can't hit the QB
GIANTSinDE : 1/30/2012 9:31 am : link
like that anymore, and maybe that's a good thing but......I remember that play and the one in 86 like the games were played yesterday. I miss that type of defensive play.
People keep saying that
Greg from LI : 1/30/2012 9:31 am : link
But why? It wasn't a blow to the head. It obviously wasn't a late hit. What would Marshall have been flagged for?
It wouldn't be a penalty unless they called him for
Big Blue '56 : 1/30/2012 9:34 am : link
leading with his helmet..
lawyer what about that play would have been a penalty today?
Giants11 : 1/30/2012 9:35 am : link
no helmet to helmet. No knees. Montana still had the ball, and he didn't unnecesarily drive him into the turf. Was actually a textbook hit.
Greg
MadPlaid : 1/30/2012 9:37 am : link
if I am remembering correctly, Marshall led with his helmet. He didn't strike him with the crown of the helmet, but the face mask did make initial contact with Montana. I think. I could be wrong.

the famous Leonard Marshall hit several times, I didn't know about the Jim Burt hit on Montana nor did I realize that the Giants knocked Joe Montana out of the game in both the 1986 AND the 1990 playoffs.

I also didn't realize that Jim Burt started the Gatorade shower-- I always thought it was Carson.

Looking at this pic, it looks legal to me.

Danny Kanell : 1/30/2012 9:41 am : link
Considering who the QB was, in today’s NFL, I have ZERO doubt in my mind that hit would be a roughing the passer penalty. It’s a shame.

Holy shit that's a doozy of a quote.
the Burt hit was great too

You can't lead with your helmet
GIANTSinDE : 1/30/2012 9:44 am : link
on a QB. They also don't like it when you try to dislodge the quarterbacks head from his neck. Jim Burts hit might be my favorite one. Just nasty.
in todays game.....

a hit like that would get someone arrested!!
Why wouldn't that be a legal hit today?
PatersonPlank : 1/30/2012 9:46 am : link
He didn't lead with his head, didn't hit Montana in the head, and Montana still had the ball
what's lost in
PaulBlakeTSU : 1/30/2012 9:47 am : link
the discussion is that Marshall would have known the rules and could have adjusted his hit enough so that he led with his shoulder and still created the same effect.
the 1986 Burt hit was kind of funny
Greg from LI : 1/30/2012 9:47 am : link
It really doesn't look that bad at full speed. When you see it in slo-mo, that's when you realize what a monster shot it was.

“My ribs and chest hurt so bad that I didn’t know my hand was broken. Normally, when you get the wind knocked out of you, you can usually breathe a little bit of air out. But I couldn’t even get a breath out. And I was thinking ‘Oh, God. I’m gonna die here, I know it. Something is seriously wrong.’”
Never mind my comment, he did lead with his head
PatersonPlank : 1/30/2012 9:53 am : link
Its not as blatant as some of the hits, as is borderline, be they could call it if they wanted. I agree with someone above though, it would have been pretty easy for Marshall to do the same thing and not lead with his helmet.
isn't "leading with the head" generally accepted to mean spearing?
Greg from LI : 1/30/2012 9:55 am : link
Or at least, leading with the crown of the helmet? Marshall didn't do that.
Greg
MadPlaid : 1/30/2012 9:56 am : link
nice pic. Everything about that hit looks legal, but the location of the Marshall's helmet makes me nervous. If he hit him with his shoulder only, I'd feel better about it as a truly legal hit. Still, what a smash! I thought he killed him. :-)
FYI
Optimus-NY : 1/30/2012 9:57 am : link
Montana and leopnard shared the same the agent. After the game Leonard actually tried to apologize Joe's wife, Jennifer, because of their professioanl relationship with that same agent.
The prohibition is against
Rob in NYC : 1/30/2012 10:00 am : link
Leading with the crown of the helmet, which Marshall didn't do. Even in the most picture perfect form tackle, a part of the helmet is likely to contact the ball carrier first.
All you guys insisting Marshall's hit wouldn't be a flag today
Exit 172 : 1/30/2012 10:04 am : link
are overlooking how golden boy QBs (which Montana was in his time) are treated in today's NFL.

Ask Osi what you're allowed to do to Aaron Rodgers.
Rob is correct
JonC : 1/30/2012 10:04 am : link
He didn't lead with the crown of his helmet, which is the crucial component. He led with the facemask, which is legal.

That said, it wouldn't shock me if that same hit today were flagged at times simply because the rules seem to be mistakenly interpreted too often.

Rob in NYC : 1/30/2012 10:07 am : link
I never said it wouldn't...I said it shouldn't be:)

I think it's very likely it would have been called.

Greg from LI : 1/30/2012 10:07 am : link
That's a fair point, but that has nothing to do with any rules changes. Whether or not it gets flagged for simply being a hit that annihilated a superstar QB is a different topic.
If they flagged the hit on Rodgers a couple weeks ago,
Go Terps : 1/30/2012 10:09 am : link
they would flag the one on Montana IMO. Clean hit or not, they don't get more violent than that.
And the rules against leading
Rob in NYC : 1/30/2012 10:11 am : link
With the crown are as much for the tackler as for the ball carrier - your head almost always goes forward with your chin to your chest, with all your momentum behind you.
A key difference in the Rodgers....
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/30/2012 10:15 am : link
hit vs. the Montana hit is that Montana still had the ball.

Plus, fucking Bill Leavy didn't have a whistle in his mouth in SF.
By today's rules,
an_idol_mind : 1/30/2012 10:15 am : link
that is still a clean hit. Sure, they could call roughing on it, but it would be a BS call made by a referee who isn't enforcing the rules as written. That's more a comment on the quality of officiating in the games than any rules changes. As far as I know, there is nothing in the rulebook that could lead an official to legitimately enforce a penalty on a hit like that.

One of the big reasons the hit did so much damage was that Montana jumped back into the hit. He was running out of the pocket and stopped suddenly to dodge LT, who was coming up on him. He probably would have been better off just letting LT take him down.
watching that clip is like watching lions take down a gazelle
Greg from LI : 1/30/2012 10:17 am : link
You see Marshall go down, stay with the play and bear down on Montana like a Mack truck.
I can watch that replay all day
JonC : 1/30/2012 10:17 am : link
especially the angle where you can see LM get off the ground in the background, then chasing Montana from his blind side lining up the killshot.
I think most of the great QB hits we remember
Rob in NYC : 1/30/2012 10:19 am : link
Williams/Young, Arrington/Aikman, Lewis/Bledsoe are legal by today's rules, as well as the rules of the day.

Lawyer in NYC : 1/30/2012 10:20 am : link
If you think you can hit a superstar QB from behind, with a sligthly lowered head, and sort of leaving your feet, and NOT get a penatly in the new NFL, you are crazy. It would have been an unnecessary roughness penalty, guaranteed.
damn you, Rob

Montana hit
stretch234 : 1/30/2012 10:28 am : link
I think even today that is a penalty free hit. The QB had the ball. That makes a huge difference. Most QB hits that are flagged are after they release the ball, or blows to the head. I have seen very few where they call a roughing penalty when the QB has the ball.

The Tuck hit on Romo was the same thing. Only difference was Marshall landed on Montana, Tuck landed on his side
Watched "America's Game" of 1990 the other night...
GA5 : 1/30/2012 10:43 am : link
I thought the hit was within today's rules, but probably would still get a flag. The thing I always remember about Marshall staying with the play after he was down and pursuing Montana is that for years, at training camp, line coach Lamar Leachman would constantly yell at his D linemen to stay in the play, no matter what, and pursue the ball. He would yell "Ball, ball ball.." to them, and they would scramble to the ball. In the heat of battle, Marshall, responding to that coaching, did just that! So thank Leonard, but also Lamar Leachman for that play.
