Enough is Enough - David Baas Will NOT be cut this year

jlukes : 2/21/2012 4:15 pm
From Mike G's story when we originally signed him

Quote:

SIGNING BONUS: $8.5 million
BASE SALARIES
2011: $1m (guaranteed)
2012: $3m ($2m guaranteed)
2013: $4.25m
2014: $4.75m
2015: $5m

WORKOUT BONUSES: $250,000 each year from 2012-15

Quick math shows that works out to these salary-cap numbers:
2011: $2.7m
2012: $4.95m
2013: $6.2m
2014: $6.7m
2015: $6.95m

Cutting Baas would accelerate the remaining 6.8 million of his bonus to this year.

Baas's salary for this year is 3 million - and two million of that is guaranteed.

Thus, it would COST us almost $6 million to cut Baas

Baas does not become 'cuttable' (meaning we actually save money by cutting him) until 2014.
Thanks!

That is credible say Baas might be cut?

I think we should cut him anyway.

He sux.

Baas has crossed the minds of the people who have the power to cut him, so I wouldn't worry.

Baas also almost got Eli killed several times.

Baas (and the OL) played fairly damn well down the stretch except for the 49er game. It's not just my opinion, but Jerry Reese said the same thing.

Remember how we were all worrying about Wilfork? Boothe and Baas kept him quiet.
In fairness, most of his snaps
vibe4giants : 2/21/2012 4:26 pm : link
were at Eli's feet.
This was directed at the people that keep spouting off that we should
jlukes : 2/21/2012 4:27 pm : link
could Baas because he sucks and we need cap room.

Cutting Baas would make our cap situation WORSE!
preach it, brother!!

I agree
Power Wins Football Games : 2/21/2012 4:29 pm : link
he'll get at least one more season
let's just cut EVERYONE!!!
djm : 2/21/2012 4:29 pm : link
start that shit from scratch, yo. Better to cut guys a year too early than a year too late. I read that in a fortune cookie, once.
I was very skeptical that Baas would handle Wilfork
the_fridge : 2/21/2012 4:31 pm : link
but he did very well. Hopefully he can be healthy and play well for a whole season because as is noted on this thread we are pretty well cap-committed to the guy.
Baas was hurt for a lot of the year...
arcarsenal : 2/21/2012 4:32 pm : link
He finally got healthier later on and he was excellent in the Super Bowl against Wilfork. People need to have some fucking patience.
Boothe
TonyG : 2/21/2012 4:33 pm : link
did a great job when he was assigned to Wilfork, Very impresive.
Baas, we'll judge him at the end of the 12' season, this would be reasonable, yes?
The guy is a veteran
tito wooten : 2/21/2012 4:34 pm : link
and being paid alot of money. We really shouldn't need to wait for him to perform. If he was a rookie or 2nd year player, then that is different.
The only time Wilfork's name was mentioned
mfsd : 2/21/2012 4:36 pm : link
pretty much the entire Super Bowl was for the BS holding call.

And Wilfork is a monster.

Baas will be fine.
When he's playing fairly hurt, there's not really an option.
arcarsenal : 2/21/2012 4:36 pm : link
The coaches can't just wave a magic wand here.
I know, but when his backup
tito wooten : 2/21/2012 4:38 pm : link
comes in and performs pretty well and is making ALOT less money, it reflects poorly on Bass, fair or unfair. He obviously can't control injuries (for the most part), but it's a bummer for him.
The Giants double-teamed
pjcas18 : 2/21/2012 4:38 pm : link
Wilfork nearly every snap. No idea why the Ravens didn't do that.

The Pats had little threat on the pass rush, and with doubling Wilfork it made Mark Anderson look like Michael Strahan.

Jlukes agree.
Big Blue '56 : 2/21/2012 4:40 pm : link
Only with some here on BBI was he ever in danger of being cut. Finally healthier, he did well in the Playoffs and sorta made Wilfork his bitch in the SB..
Depth is important.
arcarsenal : 2/21/2012 4:40 pm : link
I'd much rather have Baas and Boothe than just throw Boothe at C, put Petrus at LG and have zero depth.
Baas was poor this year
bxgiants4 : 2/21/2012 4:42 pm : link
but he was banged up

he deserves another year
Canty sucked his first year too
oipolloi : 2/21/2012 4:50 pm : link
and was not that great the second year, but then turned out to be a good player

like Canty, Baas is learning a new position. Spent most of his career in SF as a guard
learning a new position? nope.
WeatherMan : 2/21/2012 4:52 pm : link
Came up through college at center, is a natural center, and finally played well his last year in SF when playing... center.
trying
dorgan : 2/21/2012 5:02 pm : link
to have a conversation with people who were going to cut Baas is fruitless. Talk to a telephone pole instead.

You'll get better feedback.
Baas looks too thin below the waist
giantBCP : 2/21/2012 5:04 pm : link
to be a powerful player.
You can have this conversation next year though
AcesUp : 2/21/2012 5:07 pm : link
And certainly the year after...if his play doesn't improve. Baas' presence on the roster should not preclude them from drafting an interior lineman, even early if it's the BPA.
If Baas plays out of his mind....
damdevs : 2/21/2012 5:09 pm : link
next year he might not get cut in 2013. For him to be on the roster in 2013 he's gonna have to rework his deal.

There is NO F'N way we pay him 10.45 mil in 2013. You can take that to the bank!
Bass
Rob_MTL : 2/21/2012 5:13 pm : link
Giants need a back-up center. Hopefully they one pick-up via the draft or free agency
devs
YAJ2112 : 2/21/2012 5:14 pm : link
we aren't paying him 10.45 in 2013, you need to re-read the OP
YAJ
dorgan : 2/21/2012 5:19 pm : link
he's right about one thing.
We won't pay Baas 10.45 million in 2013.
YAJ2112...
damdevs : 2/21/2012 5:26 pm : link
add up his signing bonus and his salary for 2013 and that's what you come too.

He'll either have too redo his deal or he'll be sent packing. GMen won't pay that for 2013.
10+ million in 2013?
gidiefor : Mod : 2/21/2012 5:27 pm : link
dorgan, I want in
YAj2112....
damdevs : 2/21/2012 5:29 pm : link
my bad....I was adding both of those together.

That's what you get when you don't use your glasses and it's late in the day at work!
Baas
stretch234 : 2/21/2012 5:32 pm : link
The notion that people on this board think that the Giants would trust an unproven rookie C to line up in front of Eli are laughable.

The team has a QB playing on the highest level. There is zero chance a rookie would be starting at this stage of Eli's career.

What has Konz done to warrant this "great" label.
Disagree stretch
pjcas18 : 2/21/2012 5:36 pm : link
the Pats, for example, were comfortable with Nate Solder starting 13 games for the Pats. Brady is older, and less mobile than Eli and has already lost an entire season to injury.

If the Giants FO and coaches felt he was the best option a rookie could absolutely start on the Giants o-line. Especially considering the beating he took against some teams last year (SF, the Eagles) couldn't be much worse.
Konz is considered by most the 2nd best
bob in tx : 2/21/2012 5:37 pm : link
interior OL after DeCastro. Not many are suggesting he would start in 2012, but Snee started as a rookie.Let's hope Baas improves because if you don't think Eli took more hits in 2011 than ever before, then we watched different games.
Unfortunately (this really stinks) Ben...

Ben Fricke died at age 35 - ( New Window )
A note on my above post...
BMac : 2/21/2012 5:44 pm : link
...I was going to use Ben Fricke (tough as an old boot) in a joking way, but found the link that he died from colon cancer at age 35 (happened a while ago). Now that sucks, and there's no way around it. Left a wife and child.
I knew
AnishPatel : 2/21/2012 5:48 pm : link
it would be tough because of the no off season AND on top of that the guy was in and out of the line up. You can't do shit as expected with those things. I expect him to play much better.

If the scouts and Reese think one of these centers is too good value to pass up then go for it.
Konz
stretch234 : 2/21/2012 6:01 pm : link
Whole point was about a C replacing Baas. Snee is a G, Vollmer is a RT. The C makes the line calls and is directly in front of the QB.

The Giants like interior guys who can play multiple positions. Can konz do that.
...
SanFranGiantsFan : 2/21/2012 6:11 pm : link
1) Baas had very little time to mesh with the others on the OL, considering the shortened offseason. He was also the only new guy.
2) He dealt with injuries all season long.
3) Outside of the 49ers game, the OL played very well late in the season. Wilfork was a non factor in the Super Bowl.

Saying he is a bust is stupid talk.

I agree with o-lineman
pjcas18 : 2/21/2012 6:17 pm : link
needing time to jel and work together etc, but #1 is a little bit of a cop out and has garnered media cliche status.

rookie o-lineman came in and played well with no ota's mini-camps, shortened training camp and no history of playing in the NFL - even at center, like Pouncey in Miami, and other non-centers (smith, solder, etc.).

Why can they do it as rookies, and a high-priced veteran center can't be expected to?

...
SanFranGiantsFan : 2/21/2012 6:21 pm : link
Pj; it doesn't help matters when Bass, the new guy, is dealing with multiple injuries & isn't out there on the field. You need to be on the field to jel with your fellow lineman.
I definitely
pjcas18 : 2/21/2012 6:23 pm : link
buy the injuries - especially on the o-line where strength and leverage are so important.

I'm not sure I buy the shortened camp and no OTA/mini-camp reasons so many have put forth to explain it.
It took three seasons for Michael Boley to show us why he had been
Reese's Pieces : 2/21/2012 6:37 pm : link
given a big contract. He was hurt his first year also. Now they are talking about extending him.
Can someone please explain to me
Knee of Theismann : 2/21/2012 7:39 pm : link
why the hell Baas is getting paid as much as he is? We signed him last year. He was 29 years old and had had exactly 1 full season starting at center in his career and we're paying him quality left tackle $. No one should be surprised at his less than mediocre play this year. IMO this was a very un-Reese-like move and I think it will come back to bite us in the ass.
And personally
Knee of Theismann : 2/21/2012 7:41 pm : link
I have no problem with Baas starting at center next year, simply because I think we have other more pressing needs to address and I think he'll do better than last year. But still those figures are outrageous.
I think a neck injury for an O-Lineman...
arcarsenal : 2/21/2012 7:42 pm : link
...is probably extremely difficult to play through.
knee
stretch234 : 2/21/2012 8:16 pm : link
How did he perform in the playoffs.

He was.the best FA C last year. His signing bonus was 8.5m for 5 years. That is pretty reasonable. His big number is salary, which is easier to deal with
Of course bass won't be cut
Some Fan : 2/21/2012 8:54 pm : link
I think you can win a SB with him at center
Why bother with this thread?
BigBlueBuff : 2/21/2012 9:09 pm : link
All offseason we're going to hear "Cut Baas/Canty/Rolle/Diehl/Barden/Beckum/Sintim/Jernigan"

Did I miss anyone?
Buffer, shame on you..
Big Blue '56 : 2/21/2012 9:13 pm : link
Boley!
I think when you sign free agents,
barens : 2/21/2012 10:01 pm : link
you almost have to look at them like rookies. Canty, Bernard, Boley and Rolle didn't start off with a bang, but now they each have a big role on the team(Bernard less, but he's also playing better than his first year).

I expect improvement in his play next year.
