Besides TE we don't have many other holes. Our oline could use some upgrading but those guys cost a lot of money. We literally have nobody at TE.
If Tamme does sign with us ...
snumber6 : 3/9/2012 2:38 pm : link
He'll be given a set of plays that fits his abilities ... and the more time he spends watching film with Eli during the off season ... the bigger that package will be ...

It seems like there could be quite a lot he can do and be involved with ...
Tamme
UConn4523 : 3/9/2012 2:39 pm : link
can literally take over the "Steve Smith" role, only with more YAC. 3rd down conversions would increase with a guy like Tamme on the field.

we def have some issues that need to be addressed. We need a TE, CB (or 2), MLB, OL (or 2), WR.

I got the $3mm/yr from Rick who said he expected him to sign for a 2yr $6mm contract.

Dallas Clarke went down with a injury two years ago this guy played like a all pro TE. He will be a awesome receiving TE.
Rick
Josh in the City : 3/9/2012 2:50 pm : link
who's the 1 TE that is decent? If you're referring to Pascoe he is not an NFL caliber TE.

Who is our starting #2 CB? Ross and Thomas are both FA's and neither are a lock to return.

Also, I doubt the Giants bring back Blackburn (still love the Chase, just doubt it) and Goff is coming off ACL surgery. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants use an early draft choice on MLB.

This team definitely has needs.

Josh in the City : 3/9/2012 2:51 pm : link
The colts and giants run VERY different offenses. The colts TE lines up off the line pretty much as often as he lines up on it. The #1 trait of a prototypical Giants TE is someone who can block. Receiving, while important, is still secondary.
In 2010
Big Rick in FL : 3/9/2012 2:52 pm : link
Only 5 TEs had more receptions than Tamme. They are Witten,Cooley,Gonzalez,Pettigrew & Watson. Not saying he is better or even close to any of those guys, but he was very productive. He will get close to 3 million a year. Like I said Ben Watson got 4 million a year with basically identical stats.
Tamme would be an excellent pickup
dpinzow : 3/9/2012 2:53 pm : link
but he would be the receiving TE; he's not a great blocker by NFL standards.

Plus, he wouldn't cost much, and he's already fond of the idea of catching passes from a Manning
Yeah Pascoe is the
Big Rick in FL : 3/9/2012 2:56 pm : link
1 decent TE which I why we need to sign 2 TEs. I don't think Ross will be back either. If I had to bet then I would bet T2 will be back. Even if they aren't back our 1st round pick from last season should very well be our #2 CB. At 32 we aren't going to get a CB that is better than Prince and good CBs go for a shit ton of money in free agency. We need a TE more than any position on the team.

I agree we need a MLB early. I think we should try move up for Kuechly.
Josh
Big Rick in FL : 3/9/2012 2:58 pm : link
I never said the team didn't have needs. Once again every team has needs. Besides maybe MLB none of our needs are as important as getting a TE where we have absolutely nothing.
He was electric with Andre' Woodson at Kentucky.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/9/2012 3:01 pm : link
That says something.

Seriously, he's a bright, high-character guy and a logical replacement for Beckum if the price is right.
my gut tells me Fleener is going to be an All-pro
Rich Houston-NYG-WR-1971 : 3/9/2012 3:01 pm : link
for many years. i just think if you sign tamme for 3 mil, you make a very difficult decision at 32 if fleener is available.

Rick
Josh in the City : 3/9/2012 3:04 pm : link
I totally agree with you that TE is clearly our #1 need. I just don't think Tamme is a good fit unless the price is really cheap b/c I think we have plenty of other needs as well and not much room under the cap.
I'd bet that Fleener is gone before the Giants could take him.
Giants11737 : 3/9/2012 3:06 pm : link
Every year there's a large group here that salivates over one specific prospect who always gets taken before we can select- it was that LB McClain a couple years back.

Tamme is not getting significant money.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/9/2012 3:08 pm : link
He's a non-blocking one-year wonder who wasn't even that great in his one notable season.
That is what I am saying
Big Rick in FL : 3/9/2012 3:10 pm : link
though we have needs, but nothing really besides depth players that will be cheap. The needs that we have can also be drafted. The Giants always figure out a way to go out and get who they want and have no problems with the cap. We have been trying to use Beckum for a while now and he hasn't really worked out. Tamme's skillset is very similar he is a better player though. Tamme is worth around 3 miller per year. It isn't really alot of money for a guy with his production.

I don't think any of the TE's outside Fleener,Charles & Allen are better than Tamme. If Fleener is as great as everybody says he is than he probably won't be there at 32. After watching Gronkowski the past 2 years and team before us is probably going to fall in love with a similar player to Gronkowski. I don't think Charles or Allen are worth our 1st rounder and they probably won't be there at 64. We are most likely going to have to sign 2 TEs.

He was a backup to an All-Pro player. The one season he got a chance with a decent QB he was a pretty damn good player. His one good season was a better season than any TE we have/had on the roster this past year.
Maybe Hopkins is the base TE
Rjanyg : 3/9/2012 3:15 pm : link
with Tamme the pass catching, move H back?
Hopkins is quickly becoming the legend Jonas seawright
Rich Houston-NYG-WR-1971 : 3/9/2012 3:25 pm : link
was..good grief
Let's face it guys Beckum has been a disappointment
Torrag : 3/9/2012 3:27 pm : link
Still a young player and has shown a few flashes but if the Giants are ready to cut bait on him would anyone really be surprised? I don't think so. Tamme upgrades the move TE position on this roster if we do go in that direction.
hopkins is the blocker
msh : 3/9/2012 3:30 pm : link
so its the reciever TE they need i would rather sign a FA at TE or use pascoe/hopkins until ballard is ready than draft a 1st round TE.

Use the draft (especially first 3 picks on CB,OL and DL (pref NT/larger DT) or WR/RB depending what happens with manningham and jacobs if the right player falls to them early(still need a RB in this draft either way to replace ware imo)
Jeeeez
Josh in the City : 3/9/2012 3:35 pm : link
why is everyone here being dense!? YOU CAN'T HAVE ONE TE THAT BLOCKS AND ONE THAT RECEIVES!!That's not how NFL offenses work (especially the Giants who utilize a lot of 3WR sets! You need to have a guy that could do both and who is a GOOD blocker and a capable receiver. Yes, you can utilize a separate h-back but that's not part of our base package on offense. You still need that one guy who could do both similar to our past three starting TE's, Ballard, Boss, and Shockey.
sad part is beckum
msh : 3/9/2012 3:35 pm : link
was ready to breakout when he did his ACL was showing better understanding of the offence and had the speed to boot was on the verge of showing what reese saw in him

still a disappointment granted thou,a 3rd round pick should be at that stage sooner than he was and produced more than he did, still may be back need to wait and see
Rich
Rjanyg : 3/9/2012 3:38 pm : link
At this point, Hopkins would be in the same position that Ballard was in last year. We didn't know much about him but the Giants obviously did. Ballard had a great year for somebody we knw nothing about. I am not saying that Hopkins will be as good or better than Ballard, but he is a pretty big dude and we have heard several comments by Reese that he really likes Hopkins and he is working very hard.

You have to trust our front office with personnel to some extent.
Howard Cross
Rjanyg : 3/9/2012 3:39 pm : link
was primarily a blocking TE. Just sayin.
the giants have always had 2 TE
msh : 3/9/2012 3:39 pm : link
one thats a primarly reciever and one thats a primarly blocker.

yes they do both need to do both but they have always had 1 guy that was better at blocking and 1 that was more of a catcher thats what people here mean,or at least how i understand they mean ala last season with ballard and pascoe
Ballard
Rjanyg : 3/9/2012 3:40 pm : link
was used primarily as a blocker in college as well. He did pretty well as a receiver.
msh
Josh in the City : 3/9/2012 3:41 pm : link
Ballard is a better blocker AND receiver than Pascoe.
Josh
snumber6 : 3/9/2012 3:46 pm : link
I agree - Ballard won the TE job because he learned how to catch passes a lot better than Beckum learned how to block ...
Tamme would not be replacing Ballard ... his package would be more in the Beckum area ...
Tamme would be a fine contributor ... but not the starting TE ...

And snumber6
Josh in the City : 3/9/2012 3:47 pm : link
I agree Tamme could do a great job of replacing Beckum and his 5 receptions on the season. My point is that I don't think they should be paying a FA any type of substantial money at all to do so.
Beckum
Vegas Steve : 3/9/2012 3:53 pm : link
Too me it simple

The giants clearly tried to get something out of beckum as Eric pointed out in the playoffs.

so what happened is what has always happened to beckum he got hurt.
That's the story of his entire career.

Anyone can get injuried but this guy has made a living at reporting to the trainers room for rehab.

I'd cut ties with Beckum I'm sick of this guy collecting a paycheck for no production.

With the 32 pick in the draft
SB46GIANTS : 3/9/2012 4:04 pm : link
the NY Giants select....COBY FLEENER!!!!

I doubt it and I hope not.
I'm late to the party

Did anyone confirm the original report? Did Francesa indeed say that and is it confirmed online?
I want Kellen Davis as well
Optimus-NY : 3/9/2012 6:08 pm : link
He fits the mold of a Giants TE in this offense. A guy like Fassano as backup on the cheap as a #2 TE to go along with him would really give the Giants a TRUE 2-TE set that they could work play action off of as well as help to amplify the running game off the edges--a BIG problem this year due to the subpar blocking on the part of the TEs and FB due to injuries and lack of ability.

**Looking forward to Hynoski being healhty at FB next year. He showed that he can get the job done at FB. While not dominating, he's smart and gets the job done, to go along with being a nice receiver w/soft hands out of the backfield.

**Looks like we'll see Pascoe in Training camp at least if depth at TE situation is not improved, to go along with a backup plan at FB should Hyno get hurt at all.
I did a quick research on him and he would be a very solid
sexymoves : 3/9/2012 6:25 pm : link
addition, Great athelete very smart.
So - no confirmation yet and the Giants reportedly still over the cap?
BlueLou : 3/12/2012 2:41 am : link
Meanwhile the Colts have cut Dallas Clark... Are they now negotiating with Tamme to keep him while the Giants are stuck in cap no man's land until they slice some more pieces off the team?

Tamme was a 2 time All-SEC TE according to Wikipedia, and a fine scholar-athlete to boot.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants come to an injury settlement with Beckum, he's had a very frustrating career so far to anyone's eyes.
Put me down as
