New Ralph Vacchiano NYDN article on Terrell Thomas

Defenderdawg : 3/10/2012 3:47 pm
From the article:

"Thomas is still dreaming of something bigger, though, which may be why negotiations with the Giants have stalled. He points out that in 2010 the Jacksonville Jaguars gave defensive end Aaron Kampman a four-year, $26 million contract with $11 million guaranteed, while he was still rehabbing a torn ACL."

I've been a little worried about this
Sneakers O'toole : 3/10/2012 3:49 pm : link
It's possible we could lose both TT and Ross on the FA market. Once these guys start fielding offers, you never know what's going to happen.
The Giants should then point out
MarshallOnMontana : 3/10/2012 3:50 pm : link
how dumb a move that was for Jax. Kampman has appeared in 11 of 32 games and has 4 sacks for them on that deal

Thats a weird argument
We won a super bowl with thomas playing 0 games
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/10/2012 3:50 pm : link
and drafted a CB 19th overall when he was healthy.

If he wants to get paid like that, he can go somewhere else.
If he goes, he goes
EliManningFan : 3/10/2012 3:51 pm : link
I'm guessing if he leaves the Giants, he will fare as well as most of the other guys who have left for more money. Giants seem to have a great fix on what their guys are worth and teams that outbid them tend to be sorry later.

Yeah, cornerbacks are important, but we have won Super Bowls with mediocre ones. A great pass rush covers a lot of sins. Especially when a great QB is on the team.
apples and oranges
hitdog42 : 3/10/2012 3:52 pm : link
referencing a DE; that is pure agent talk.
I hope TT is able to come back to form, and come back to the giants. he + webster, plus another year for prince, and the secondary could be quite a strength. KP another year removed from injury.
Hitdog..
PeterS : 3/10/2012 3:54 pm : link
ditto!
Even it was (and is) a dumb move for Jacksonville
Defenderdawg : 3/10/2012 3:55 pm : link
Once free agency starts, there will be plenty of money to be thrown around for too few free agents of value, and there are more teams looking to spend than there are teams with common sense and patience.
The real question
Sneakers O'toole : 3/10/2012 3:55 pm : link
is what is the league collectively going to say about his value.
TTH

Absolutely. If there's any bit of truth to that then by & good luck to ya. Sounds like BS really, because he can't be that unrealistic...or

A week ago I was convinced the #NYG would re-sign @TerrellThomas24 before free agency opens Tuesday. After talking to him, I'm not so sure.
He
AcidTest : 3/10/2012 4:03 pm : link
knows that if he tears that ACL again his career is done. He wants to get as much as he can now. I don't blame him. I also don't blame the Giants.

If he leave, thanks for the memories.
Another Ralph V tweet
Defenderdawg : 3/10/2012 4:10 pm : link
"'Does @TerrellThomas24 think the #NYG will re-sign him? “I’m very optimistic, but it’s a business. I’ve seen it turn ugly. You look at the Steve Smith situation. You can’t take that out of the back of your mind. Kevin Boss is a guy they drafted, and the Giants were big on keeping their picks. I definitely think they want me back. They told me they want me back. The conversations started right away. But until that ink is dry I can’t say I’m coming back. All I can really say is 'Time is ticking.'”
Losing Thomas and Ross would be a worst case senario
Sneakers O'toole : 3/10/2012 4:19 pm : link
sometimes the best decision you can make still sucks. Sometimes your choices are bad and worse.
Don't really care at this point.
Big Blue '56 : 3/10/2012 4:25 pm : link
It's not as if we're dealing with a terrific player who is healthy and in search for big bucks..

We've got Reese.Let him do his job
We still have
AnishPatel : 3/10/2012 4:27 pm : link
Webster, Prince, and we will see what Bruce Johnson brings to the table. Worst comes to worst we draft a Cb later on in the draft.
And pick up a serviceable FA a la Madison, if necessary.
Big Blue '56 : 3/10/2012 4:29 pm : link
They may think we're ok with Coe and Tryon to go with Johnson, CW and Prince. Yes, we will pick up a CB or two in the draft and possibly UDFA
It seems to me they don't feel that way
Sneakers O'toole : 3/10/2012 4:34 pm : link
given how quickly they went to the table with Thomas. When you start talks early, it's a clear sign you want that player under contract.
I am sure
AnishPatel : 3/10/2012 4:36 pm : link
we wanted to get him back. But TT may want more money than we are willing to give. That's fine, like I said we have the others, and who knows may we sign or draft a Cb later on. Let's see if another undrafted FA CB makes the team or gets invited to camp. I am not worried.
Given the fact that the extra DB plays more than the third LB
Defenderdawg : 3/10/2012 4:37 pm : link
for most teams and that you need 5-6-7 DB's...I have become very partial to stockpiling DB's and pass rushers...always easier said then done.
I have a feeling both TT and Ross are gone
steve56 : 3/10/2012 4:38 pm : link
Hope we bring back Tryon because I loved his toughness and heart for the team. Even though he was on the team for only a week or two he gave it his all out there with a broken arm and refused to sit out the game.

We will almost certainly draft a corner too and I think well be fine
Didn't we recently re-sign Tryon?

They go where the money is just like we signed Baas for more money Thomas, Ross and Mario will move on don't blame them one bit. Just look at what we have done to our own players in the past several days.
not to legitimize other players and positions
TommytheElephant : 3/10/2012 4:43 pm : link
But eli, jpp, tuck, nicks, cruz is pretty much the only guys im crying over if we lost.
They go where
AnishPatel : 3/10/2012 4:47 pm : link
they can make the team. Some go to winners, while others go to their child hood favorite teams. Some stay or want to stay closer to home. So I am sure if our college scouts or whoever in house make a good pitch guys will want to come. We can always point to guys like Bruce Johnson and other undrafted FAs that made our roster as a example of us allowing the best player to make the team.
....
BrettNYG10 : 3/10/2012 4:50 pm : link
I suspect we're making him a fair offer (like we did with Kiwi), yet TT is valuing himself too highly.
I'd be disappointed
Kyle in NY : 3/10/2012 4:52 pm : link
if we weren't able to work something out with T2. But I understand it's a difficult situation to manage given the uncertainty that comes with his njury history. One of my favorite players on the team though when he's out there.

In the past, the Giants are seldom off the wall with high ball or
Marty in Albany : 3/10/2012 6:28 pm : link
low ball offers. Thomas will get a reasonable offer from Reese and if Thomas gets something better from another team, the Giants have done the best they can and will make adjustments. You can't have the attitude of "we need to keep Thomas at all costs."
With Al Davis up in the sky
mamamia : 3/10/2012 7:10 pm : link
the money thrown around shouldn't be as crazy. I see the Giants drafting 2 DB's along with 2 OL and A RB or two
I think it is important to resign...
Reb8thVA : 3/10/2012 7:16 pm : link
TT or Ross because CB is not a position where the next man up theory works well for an extended period of time. Prince will probably still be very raw. Without either TT or Ross it could be a retooling year but given we just won the Superbowl that might just be ok instead of making some bad contracts that might hurt more in the longer run.
goodbye if he wants to play hardball
clint : 3/10/2012 7:42 pm : link
umm, paging mr. finnegan :-). if he's going to play hardball, then goodbye in my mind. We won the frickin' SB w/o him - how valuable is he? if this is his attitude, then I'm kind of glad we didn't spend the franchise tag on him. we can win w/o him
he'll be back
Luuuuucas XD : 3/10/2012 8:40 pm : link
there's no way a team gives him a big contract, he'll be back
After last years offseason
Antdog23 : 3/10/2012 8:41 pm : link
I'm done questioning this front office for now. I'll defer to them and whatever happens happens... they obviously know what they are doing.
I dispute the notion
Dave in MD : 3/10/2012 9:00 pm : link
that Prince will be raw. I'd gather he'll be as good as Ross was last year. The problem is what's behind. But that assumes we don't add any more corners this offseason. I doubt that's the case.
Aaron Kampman contract for reference.......

Giants probably offered him a contract similar to that of Hixon and Johnson. A base salary (somewhat higher perhaps) with little or no signing bonus. TT must know his market value isn't great, but nonetheless wants to shop around to see if he can do any better. I have no problem with him doing so.

But as others have noted, we won a SuperBowl without him, and there are legitimate concerns about whether he will even play this year, or how well. I'd be surprised if the Giants didn't take a CB high if both TT and Ross leave, but I think we'll survive.

CWeb has a few more years, and Prince will now have been in the system for more than a year and will be well recovered from his broken foot. The Giants probably also seem to like Johnson, Coe, and Witherspoon. All of these players and a second or third round pick will hopefully be enough, especially with our pass rush.
They probably offered a contract similar to Kiwi

I would think something in between those two contracts would be good
rasbutant : 3/10/2012 9:35 pm : link
give him the 4 yrs, but make 4 mil of the signing bonus a roster bonus in 2013.

Give him 6-8 mil guaranteed, keep his cap number low for 2012, if he returns to form, then 8-9mil is right where his salary should be, may even be a deal for the Giants if he gets back to Probowl form. And the giants get 2013 for basically half price (5mil).
He really hasn't made Jack yet.....Signed a 4 year $1.689 million cont
rasbutant : 3/10/2012 9:41 pm : link
He's earned a big payday.

But if I was him, I would want to sign the 2yr deal and hit free agency when the big tv dollars come into play. If he has confidence in his ability and his rehab, this is the best move. If he's not then getting the most now, is his best move.
Would love him back
Rflairr : 3/10/2012 9:42 pm : link
But this why they spent a first rounder on Prince. He'll have to start. And we might have to get a lower level FA for the third CB

Prince had a shortened training camp and missed most of the season. He is still learning the peed of the game at the pro level. Any CB drafted is also likelyy to be raw and put to the test. Its a learning curve we may have to endure next year.
But Prince got an extra 4 games

Ross

I know he has been a little suspect at times , but he is healthier and a decent tackler. We could do much much worse. CWeb, Ross and Prince is solid. If theycre-sign Tryon and draft a corner I'd feel pretty good about our CB situation.

T2 is very good but maybe the Giants know more than everyone about his injury?!?
Prince as the #2 CB next year and a starter
