"Despite his imposing size, Pierce is swift — he ran the fastest 100 meters in the state of Pennsylvania as a high school senior — and elusive.
“I think what makes him special,” said Temple assistant coach Matt Rhule in an earlier interview, “is his ability to elude contact.
“You’d think, being that big of a back, he’d be a bruiser. But he makes the first man miss, the second man miss, he has an outstanding stiff-arm, and then he has breakaway speed.”
looks like a Giants type of RB. Nobody could ever replace Jacobs because his size was unique, but Pierce looks like a good combination of size and speed.
definitely an undervalued RB prospect because he played at Temple. The Giants tend to do well when picking from smaller colleges (see Strahan, Osi, Jacobs, all called reaches by Kiper but came good)
Best of luck to Coach Ruhle. He'll be learning from one of the league's great OL coaches (Coach Flaherty)
I like Pierce and think Rhule's description is spot on. Â
He's 6' 218 and ran a 4.49 40, but he's not a bruiser. He's an elusive long strider with an upright running style, and he's been injured a lot during his college career. If the Giants drafted him to be a short yardage bull, they will have drafted the wrong back.
His vision is outstanding, among the best of any back in the draft, and if given a crease, he can be gone. He doesn't have good hands, and he's questionable as a blocker, but should be able to improve. He should still be available in the 4th, and maybe later. I would be happy to see the Giants with him, provided they have another back to handle short yardage. But I still have to question the wisdom of having two good running backs (He & AB) who have proven they have trouble staying on the field.
