had depth or Ballard healthy then I'd say pass.. However, we have no one healthy at that position. Ballard and beckum are done. Pascoe is decent, but we can certainly upgrade that position. If the price is right, I'd bring Boss back and see if he can play a season. The risk is money and perhaps one concussion away from probably retiring. I'd still address the position in the draft or FA.
However, the boss man does have concussion issues so we would still need to go out and get another Tight End but if we can get him for a cost-effective contract (and I bet we can) then there is no reason not to bring back Boss
a few teams might be in on him at very modest money, and if the Giants enter the fray they would obviously have a big edge given his familiarity with us. Basically, if we want him, hes ours. Some of us were calling this as soon as he signed there
looks more like a genius everyday. lol. Everyone is devastated by the loss of Smith and Boss last year and we may be able to get both back this year for MUCH less than they originally wanted. In Reese We Trust!!!!
not just a cap hit. I think the cap hit to cut him is greater than the cap hit to keep him.
2011 4 year 16M contract. 3M signing bonus, 8M guaranteed (so 750k signing bonus per year for 4 years).
2011 3M +750k = 3.75M of the 8 guaranteed, so no matter what he's owed 4.25 on the cap.
2012 2M +750k = to keep him 2.75M in 2012.
2013 3.5M +750K
2014 4.5M +750k
to cut him, it costs 4.25M = 8M guaranteed, so I believe the Raiders owe on the cap 4.25M for Kevin Boss this year, but to keep him would have only been 2.75M
Its about net gains vs net losses. Im not sure what we figure to wind up with, but in any case nothing Kevin Boss does (ie coming back here) would effect our compensatory pick status for the 2012 draft. Transactions from this offseason will effect the 2013 compensatory process
He wanted to stay but got an offer he couldn't refuse and I don't blame him one bit for taking it. This is setting up as a win/win. We lose him for a year and we win a SB without him only to be in position to get him back after he collected a nice bonus from the Raiders. It can't get much better then that, cause he didn't burn any bridges here and is well liked and will fit right back into the offense seamlessly. Reese couldn't played this any better.
a TE in 1st rnd...Eli is a TE killer..
we need blue collar guys that block and have good hands.
there are quite a few....Ballard is proof, and Bear made
some clutch catches in playoffs. Purvis and Hopkins
look pretty good....takr a late round dropper or UFA
Put the big money on D
I laugh when people say shit like "Eli is a TE killer" Â
:ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Raiders plan to release Kevin Boss, the tight end who just eight months ago signed a four-year, $16 million deal contract with $6 million guaranteed. Boss was due $4 million this year, and the Raiders still owe him a guaranteed $2 million this year, on top of whatever he can make on whatever team signs him.
Must be, otherwise cutting him doesn't make sense.
here is rotoworld:
Quote:
8/5/2011: Signed a four-year, $16 million contract. The deal contains $8 million guaranteed, including a $3 million signing bonus. 2012: $2 million, 2013: $3.5 million, 2014: $4.5 million, 2015: Free Agent
and was very nonchalant about losing him last offseason, but id love to have him back given how dire our situation at TE currently is and the low cost that will likely be associated with him. It would be a seamless transition. What a good day. Great weather, feels like spring time, log on to bbi and see Dallas and Washington getting fucked, Boss becoming available. Nice start to this offseason
to spend a premium draft pick on a tight end who can win one one one matchups and thus take the burden off of the third receiver, then I don't see them sinking many resources into the position. If that turns out to be the case, then a discounted KB might actually be an option.
Boss was attracting heavy interest, it was one team who under al davis generally was an outlier in the league. We had a very modest offer on the table and it would have been enough to retain him if not for crazy al davis. Now fast forward one year later, another concussion, a stint that just didn't work out, i can't imagine his value increased. We will be able to get him cheaper than the offer we put on the table last year
I know everyone likes to think they're smarter than everybody else and say it as fact, Giants aren't signing X or Y, but if he's healthy (big if) he'd fit in very well.
I wouldn't be shocked if the Giants strongly considered him if he could pass a physical.
The Giants tried (even if it was half-heartedly) to address TE last year I suspect they will again this year. Boss might be an easy solution, who cares if he played here before, if anything it makes it an easier decision.
While not the greatest receiver, and has concussion problems, a big reason our run game sucked this year was due to losing him. He is a very good blocker, which is the most important trait for a TE in this offense. I would be surprised if we didn't at least make an offer, i would guess something like 3 years, 5 mill, 2 mill gtd. A little less than what was offered last year.
had more to do with a bunch of factors, i wouldn't rank his concussion history in the top 3 though even though its worrisome long term
1. Adjustment to a new team, offense
2. Major downgrade in QB play
3. He's really not that good anyway, what were you expecting? I would love him back though
too in pre-season and missed at least a couple games.
the injury concern is real, but if your choices are:
1. Are injury riddled Boss at a reasonable cost
2. Unproven rookie mid-round draft pick (assuming not Fleener in the first)
3. Bear Pascoe - would require a tender offer I believe - may even cost more than Boss? (seems like a good dude so don't want to say anything bad about him, but certainly upgradable and leaves ZERO depth)
4. other FA who will require $$
Thats not the only reason he left the Giants. Thats a nice post script afterward is all. The Raiders literally doubled our offer. He would have been here otherwise. Hes not anti East coast. And Oakland is still like 1,000 miles from his home anyway, its not like hed drive there from the Raider facility
Boss was rock solid when he was here.. I just think the concussions make it too much of a risky proposition. One good shot and that's it. He's not a guy you can rely on 16 games from at this point. Sure, if he comes real cheap.. go for it. Just probably wouldn't be my preferred move.
the way guys here are doing. Last year it made sense to offer Boss a decent contract, which they did. However, he suffered another concussion and had a leg injury. He is simply not the same player any longer.
As for Smith, he very well may have ruined his career out of greed and narcissism. The Eagles didn't offer him a lot more money; it was just all guaranteed. But, the real difference maker seemed to be that they just went along with his desire to play opening day. He was not ready and his knee got progressively worse as the season went on. His game was dominated by his ability to run precise routes. He lost that skill. He is a shell of his former self right now and it is questionable if he can even come close to that player again.
Give me a break. The guy did the same thing that basically every pro athlete does which is take the best offer. These guys don't play football out of loyalty. They do it because this is their career and how they make a living.
Smith did what any other guy in his shoes would have done. Let's not act like he owed it to the Giants organization to play for cheap. He didn't. And the idea that he's some sort of narcissist is fucking absurd.
Or he didn't know if he'd ever be at full strength and took the most guarantee money he could. Doesn't make him greedy, he could be a year or two away from the end of his career.
He always looks to the TE just before he is about to get flattened no matter how tight the coverage. He saves a sack but gets his TE lit up. Tell Giantology to watch a game or two. He does it a lot. Sometimes he just has to get rid of it and has no other options.
I say that not because of the money, but the insistence that he play opening day. It just wasn't a wise decision and seemed to come from ego and out of spite to the Giants, who were inclined to PUP him. Turns out they weren't trying to screw him out of money, but help his long-term career.
who is to say he would have ever recovered, that surgery is far from a certainty. I don't wish him any ill will, he didn't sound bitter, and the reaction of a lot of Giants fans to a business decision by a fan-friendly player was really depressing to witness.
I don't wish him any ill-will also. But, I also wouldn't sign him at this point, especially not for the critical role of #3 WR, as some here suggest based on nothing but sentimentality. That would be a terrible football decision.
I agree with that, but if they want to give him... Â
I'd be interested in Boss. He'll be cheap, he knows the system, he's an adequate player at a position where we don't really have any players at all. Makes a ton of sense to me.
From the outside, we're not in much of a position to assess the health risk, but from a football perspective it makes a ton of sense.
It's kind of a no-brainer if he checks out medically... Â
If he passes, well sure we could do better in free agency or the draft, but we happen to be broke this year. Save every buck for a more important position.
back in a Giants uniform, but in all honesty I'm ready to move on. I think Jake Ballard pretty much showed this past season that Boss wasn't all that special and that his production can be easily duplicated. At this point I'm ready for the Giants to make a move and get a legitimate game-changing threat at the TE position - it's been too long since the Giants had one.
Boss looked really good here but overall is an average TE. I think this, plus having a lousy QB, had more to do with his performance than anything else. That being said I would bring him back if its cheap. We have a need, he knows the system, and he's likely as good as anything else out there.
should retire, but if he wants to play and passes the Giants medical test (which I don't think is a sure thing) it is a very natural signing.
By the way, Boss is not a good blocker. That's been a weakness of his from the get-go and he only improved from awful to really mediocre over his Giants career.
I'd love him back here on a small contract if we can work it out, and obviously, if he checks out medically. I know he wanted to be here last year from the interviews he gave approaching free agency. I believe he and Eli are friends as well.
(Grin)
He must be in bad shape.
It's not like the Raiders are one player away and desperately need a roster spot.
I dont remember the last time that happened.
spike : 5:47 pm
the Giants go back to the same players that left them..
I dont remember the last time that happened.

If that is $8M and not $6M this is a mistake.
Although ESPN also says 8M guaranteed.

either way, I watched him week 17 when then the raiders needed to win to get in and he looked exactly like he did on the Giants.
don't remember his line, but he caught a few balls and had a TD

I think you strongly consider Boss.
Boss for cheap is very appealing. It would be a seamless transition.
That's the only reason he left the Giants in the first place.
Money.

I'd love to have him back, but the concussion history is scary
But this dude is one hit away from retirement so I don't we can sign him & just declare that our TE problem has been solved.
Boss, Kevin - 28 Rec; 365 yds; Average 13.1; 3 TDs;

Boss should be a tertiary/insurance option, not a primary target in FA.
