Would the Giants bring back Boss & Smith at Vet Minimum?

G-MEN-IN-MIAMI : 3/12/2012 5:59 pm
It amazes me how this organization was getting killed at the beginning of last years free agency for letting both Smith and Boss walk and one year later and a Lombardi Trophy later they could have the chance to bring them back as if it never happened. Is this something Eli would welcome? Would Boss be back to his old self and would Smith complement Cruz and Nicks as the 3rd WR or should the Giants just move forward and look elsewhere?
I'm worried
Josh in the City : 3/12/2012 6:00 pm : link
about the health of both. I'd bring them in for a workout and if they're deemed healthy enough, offer a contract with little to no guaranteed money.
Health risks and contract costs are the issue
JonC : 3/12/2012 6:01 pm : link
I do not believe either player is the same as before they left NYG, the team would have extra due diligence to handle first.

hope not. We need to move on. Both have serious health risks.
I say yes to Boss
Sneakers O'toole : 3/12/2012 6:04 pm : link
no to Smith
I think Boss would be more likely

Should we give them
SBlue46 : 3/12/2012 6:04 pm : link
1M each and they will play 2-3 games or sign
3 or 4 guys like Cruz and Rhino for minimal and
can play ST's and position and will effective at
least and upside potential..
I'd be more than happy to bring them both in
redbeard : 3/12/2012 6:05 pm : link
for a physical and a workout. If they both check-out I'd offer a veteran minumum contract (maybe slightly more) for a year or two. If they are back to near where they were than they could be nice additions, if not than it's no big loss. And if they want to go see if they can get a nice payday somewhere (doubtful) then they can
Better question: Do either of them just take vet minimum?

Cruz only played in 3 games his rookie year.
yup

it happens all the time that guys sign a big contract, get cut and then go back to their original team

i doubt it

Boss has had a lot of concussions.. Smith you have to know the knee is sound and then where does he play ?? Id rather move forward..
oip
Deej : 3/12/2012 6:31 pm : link
fair point, but it's pretty rare that a guy leaves, and then his two replacements blow out their knees late the next season, and then the guy gets cut after only 1 year. All that said, seems very unlikely.
no....

I have a strange feeling

the Giants and Steve Smith saga is not over.

I still say phuck him but whatevs.
For the 4,236th time...NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
jintsfan : 3/12/2012 6:40 pm : link
Those guys are damaged goods and adding them to the roster does not make the Jints a better team.
Steve Smith
djstat : 3/12/2012 6:44 pm : link
Is not healthy...why would you give him $1,000,000...to rehab? Screw him. He is Benedict Arnold who ran to the eagles for money when if he would have listened to TC and Co. he'd have another ring and equally as much money because of endorsement and apperances...he is a jerkoff
How the hell do you guys know
BarbieCarpenter : 3/12/2012 6:51 pm : link
If Steve smith is healthy. He will be two offseasons removed from the knee. The bigger issue is where does he play? Is Cruz as effective on the outside so SS can slide into the slot because SS aint mario when it comes to speed.
I'd rather move on.
arcarsenal : 3/12/2012 7:04 pm : link
We don't need to sign damaged goods for sentimental reasons.
Why would we want to?
Matt M. : 3/12/2012 7:08 pm : link
Both are shells of where they were with the Giants with serious health concerns.
They should just go all out and sign Boss, Smith, Shockey, & Plax.
Riggies : 3/12/2012 7:14 pm : link
Misplaced Sentimentality Championship, here the Giants come!
Sign plax and toomer will come out of retirement
madgiantscow009 : 3/12/2012 7:14 pm : link
boom....kevin boss and steve smith. Superbowl lineup.
I don't understand
Burt in Alameda : 3/12/2012 7:42 pm : link
why anyone thinks Cruz can not play wide receiver. He played that position often during the season and played it well.
No thanks...
Pierced05 : 3/12/2012 7:54 pm : link
I'd rather see them fill those positions through draft and FA
The Giants Took Carr Back
OntheRoad : 3/12/2012 10:38 pm : link
so there is precedent.

The Giants and Boss reportedly left on good terms, so provided he is healthy, Kevin seems like a real possibility to return.

I think we don't know enough about Smith. If he left on terms of mutual acrimony, I wouldn't expect the Giants to court him. But otherwise, why wouldn't Reese let him show he's still a player? A lot of players at various positions have bounced back after a down year following an injury.
Boss & Smith

You can't take a chance on a TE who has had at least 3 concussions. He is 1 step from retirement.

As for Smith, move on. it has been almost 2 seasons w/o him

Sentimentality would have nothing to do with it and who says he's damaged goods? By the way some of you talk, you would think that nobody in the NFL has ever come back from a season-ending injury. I think we should leave the medical prognoses to the Giants training staff.
What is the fascination with Smith?
HomerJones45 : 3/13/2012 7:22 am : link
Every day, there is a thread about re-signing Smith. He wasn't the fastest receiver before he had his knee surgery. He's a 10 yard per catch receiver who doesn't have a unique skill set; there are lots of them out there. We already have Hixon as the knee-surgery-in-waiting. Time to move on.
Homer
Milton : 3/13/2012 7:32 am : link
And yet such an average guy with nothing particularly special about him managed to brake the receiving record on a team that's been around since 1925. Maybe there is something special about him after all, it just can't be measured with a ruler or a stop watch. You'll have to ask Eli.
Milton, good point.
Ira : 3/13/2012 7:38 am : link
Smith was a brilliant route runner, who excelled in getting separation, like Jerry Rice, who was a sort of mentor to him. He had an incredible connection with Eli, who always knew what to expect from him. My only concern is the knee - not from a standpoint of speed, but his ability to cut sharply and explode out of his cuts.
I imagine
mrvax : 3/13/2012 7:50 am : link
if for some reason the Giants cannot acquire or draft a decent TE, they would bring Boss back on a 1 year contract.
Someone has to play the position.
with either one
fkap : 3/13/2012 8:17 am : link
(or any FA seemingly on the downside of his career/rehabbing from injury) it is not a case of would they be the same player as they were. It is purely a case of are they better dollar/production value than anyone else we can get. IF either one can fill a need better than anyone else, and can pass a medical, they're fair game.
I'd love to have Boss back
Motley Blue : 3/13/2012 9:34 am : link
but he took another nasty shot to the head at the end of last season. Dude has had his bell rung a lot. I just worry about the dude.
No to either
NNJ Tom : 3/13/2012 9:58 am : link
that ship has sailed. Boss is too big of a health risk and Smith burned his bridge.

Time to move on.
