Luck vs RG3

JintOne : 3/21/2012 10:23 am
Is there really a big difference in both QB's?
Will this be another case of Manning vs Leaf when it's all said and done?
Who would you pick if you were the Colts?
If you asked me, I would take Luck. RG3 reminds me a lot like Vick. Better accuracy but I cant say I'm sold on him. Both Luck and RG3 have similar stats but stats doesn't always translate to intangibles. I think it would be a draft day shocker if the Colts took RG3 which in turn shifts Luck to Washington. What say you?
I would always take the pocket passer

Don't want the Skins to get Luck.

It's not a Manning vs. Leaf situation

Neither Luck nor RG3 have the dreaded Nuke LaLoosh Syndrome that Leaf had.
Luck to the Colts is a done deal
Dubs : 3/21/2012 10:29 am : link
RG3 is nothing like Vick. I don't think we've seen someone recently who he can be accurately compared to.

Both are going to be very, very, very, very good.

Leaf flamed out because he was a head case with serious maturity issues; both Luck and RG3 are upstanding young men.
There is ZERO CHANCE

colts take RG3. This is not Manning vs Leaf.
IMV, Luck is a no-brainer as number 1

He is an excellent athlete and, if I believe the hype, he has prototype QB skills, including the mental fortitude.

RGIII is a great athlete and I think will be at a minimum a very good player in the NFL. If I believe the hype, he is very smart and a very good guy. If he is mentally tough, he will be an excellent QB.
Lets say Luck has bad luck...

and somehow breaks a leg going down the stairs or tears his ACL while carrying in the mail a week before Draft Day....

Do the Colts still take Luck #1 or would they opt for a healthy RG3?

They are different
snumber6 : 3/21/2012 10:48 am : link
RG3 has a little bit better skill set while Luck is more experienced in the pro style system ... meaning Luck will be ready for the NFL sooner than RG3 but RG3 has a bigger upside ...
I don't think either will be a failure ... how much of a franchise QB either of them turn out to be is still open ...
Them going 1 and 2 makes a lot of sense with Luck going 1 probably the correct choice for Indy ...
Peyton was can't miss ... Leaf did have some question marks ... neither of these 2 have the Leaf potential ...
not sure you can say RG3's upside is better
UConn4523 : 3/21/2012 10:57 am : link
I think Luck's is. His upside is Peyton Manning. Not sure what RG3's is, but its not Peyton Manning.

I think people see the athletic side of RG3 as being more of an upside, but just take a look at the top 10 QB's in the NFL and see where they make their money. Pocket presence, awareness, accuracy, making changes at the LOS. I'd take all of that above "being athletic". That's why Luck is the better prospect with better upside IMO.
Luck also
UConn4523 : 3/21/2012 10:59 am : link
can run. He ran a sub 4.6 40. That is more than enough to make him as effective on the run as guy like Rodgers who ran a 4.71 at the combine.
Luck is a good athlete. He's not a world class sprinter like RGIII
BLUATHRT : 3/21/2012 11:00 am : link
but he can run and jump. He's also bigger body and won't break down as easily as a slighter RGIII. I wouldn't think twice about taking luck 1, regardless of how good RGIII could be.
Wasn't RG
bradshaw44 : 3/21/2012 11:05 am : link
going to be the 3rd qb in the draft if Barkely came out? How could he be considered the number 1 pick all of the sudden?
I need to see more of RG3
UConn4523 : 3/21/2012 11:11 am : link
to be honest. I loved what I saw of him, but I'm a huge fan of prototype QB's and in our division, you need a high IQ, pocket presence, and LOS awareness to succeed. The pass rush he will see in those 6 games alone will be a lot to handle if he doesn't have those tools.

snumber6 : 3/21/2012 11:11 am : link
You have a point ... but those things you mentioned I feel RG3 can develop over time ... even though he hasn't had to do much of that in the system he's played in and Luck has ...
He's shown to be a smart kid and a quick learner ...

but then again ... he's going to Washington ... where even wet dreams can become painful ... Rather than develop him in learning those aspects to become a successful NFL QB, they may just have him do his thing ... to his and the Skins long term detriment ...

The pressure will be on Luck also ... as he actually is becoming the new Peyton Manning ... but the system is in place for him to succeed ultimately and they do know it's the start of a rebuilding process there ...

of course he can learn it
UConn4523 : 3/21/2012 11:21 am : link
but for the time being, I can only go off what I have seen. Luck is the better prospect, and is much more ready to take over a franchise.

I also don't see being as athletic as RG3 as being more of an upside. I see it as a positive, but can mean absolutely nothing unless he learns how to play QB in the NFL.

Luck is plenty athletic to escape the pocket and be a bigger version of Aaron Rogers. He's also going to take less of a beating as someone above mentioned.

That scenario would sure as hell screw up the Redskins ... who I don't think would make their trade for a can't miss OT ...
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 3/21/2012 11:49 am : link
1) I would much rather RG3. He is a much better all around QB. I think he projects to be a better pro.

2) I hate people who see RG3's speed and immediately compare him to Vick. He is nothing like Vick. In fact, I honestly believe he could come in this year and immediately be a better QB than Vick. Why?

He is much more accurate, number one. Two, he is a smarter QB on and off the field. He makes better reads and decisions. He has a better touch; he throws a better ball. He doesn't rely on his speed or think of himself as a runner. He is a pocket passer who happens to be fast. That may mean occassionally, when the rush is on him and coverage is tight he may take off. But, he is always looking to throw.

is there a guy you'd compare him to in the pro game now?

Someone above didn't like the vick comp either. I've never seen him play so hoping to get an idea and highly athletic QBs have been pretty mercurial in the pros. I thought maybe Newton but the pure physical difference seems too great.

Cunningham? I don't have a great memory for his being accurate or not.

Matt M. : 3/21/2012 12:53 pm : link
Definitely not Cunningham. I hate to do this because I am not saying the kidwill necessarily play like him, but maybe Rodgers, except RG3 has more speed. Or, perhaps Elway. The bottom line is, he is a true pocket passer with a great work ethic and football intelligence who happens to have blinding speed also. He seems to be intelligent in the general sense, as well.

Uh, don't think you need to worry about RG3's IQ much. The guy's graduating with a Masters, already, in May.
