This Bountygate may really turn into a Dolphins bounty with Drew Brees.
The contract was taking too long and then this popped up...then the Peyton Manning talks...No way would I want to negotiate with a team with those things out there.
New Orleans may end up losing the franchise over this.
...Payments also were made for plays on which opposing players were injured. In addition, specific players were sometimes targeted. The investigation showed bounties being placed on four quarterbacks of opposing teams Brett Favre, Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, and Kurt Warner. Multiple sources have confirmed that several players pledged funds toward bounties on specific opposing players, with defensive captain Jonathan Vilma offering $10,000 to any player who knocked Brett Favre out of the NFC Championship Game in 2010.
3. Coach Williams acknowledged that he designed and implemented the program with the assistance of certain defensive players. He said that he did so after being told by Saints Head Coach Sean Payton that his assignment was to make the defense nasty. Coach Williams described his role as overseeing record keeping, defining payout amounts, deciding on who received payouts, and distributing envelopes with cash to players who earned rewards.
4. In each of the 2009-2011 seasons, the Saints were one of the top five teams in the league in roughing the passer penalties. In 2009 and 2011, the Saints were also in the top five teams in unnecessary roughness penalties; in 2010, the Saints ranked sixth in the category. In the January 16, 2010 divisional playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals, Saints defensive players were assessed $15,000 in fines for fouls committed against opposing players. The following week, in the NFC Championship Game against the Minnesota Vikings, Saints defensive players were assessed $30,000 in fines for four separate illegal hits, several of which were directed against quarterback Brett Favre.
ago what he really thinks about playing under the tag (he's in NO bc SD tagged him, more or less). I'm sure he's not a happy camper and NO may be in a dealing mood at the moment.
punishment is just..but the players involved need serious penalties assigned.
-Drew Brees ...I wonder if he signs a contract or demands a trade to dolphins. I don't think he wants to be associated with this fallout
--The players involved need serious punishment. If the coach gets a year ban..what do individual players get?
--i really would like the giants to face saints in 1st game now.
but it's rare for a team to do that. They either extend the player or may agree that they'll let him look elsewhere. Not saying he's leaving, but there's a lot of really good reasons to consider a move.
Either way, shitty move to have to franchise Drew Brees. They should have given him the bank along with a contract for life.
...Loomis and Payton should both be fired. Disregarding a direct instruction from the owner that costs the club money, bad press and draft picks; how does that not get you fired?
anybody think that the bounty system was okay? I have a friend, an Eagle fan, who is outraged by the punishment and thinks there is nothing wrong with it and that every team does it.
Mr. Benson should fire them all, period. The GM lied to Mr. Benson also - he should be fired.
If this was anywhere else, it would be dismissals and jail time.
Spags may have just gotten lucky. Wonder if he'll hire a DC?
I'm actually surprised Payton wasn't handed an even more severe punishment. Note that Loomis, who doesn't look to have been fully aware of what was happening, received half of Payton's suspension.
Help but to be thrilled. I know its a lot about how mad I was to see Peyton run up the score on us, but I can not stand the guy now, and I have grown to really dislike the Saints now, so today I am thrilled. I just would love to see us kick thier asses next season and start to turn the tables on them. I have also always disliked Williams, just the fact that he was a Buddy Ryan deciple, is a huge factor in disliking him. I really can not stand the entire Ryan family, and I am thrilled to see that they are starting to get exposed, at least thier ways are getting exposed, and if you don't think the same crap is not going on with the Jets and Cowboys, your nuts, they are, that is the way these clowns are.
that it baffled me then and baffles me even more now regarding why the officials did not call roughing. That should be the next investigation, i.e., the significant officiating incompetence.
If Favre won that game, I think he would have then won the SB and ended his career on a much higher note. I think Favre and the Vikings got screwed and the Saints should be stripped of their SB win like in the Black Sox scandal.
PaulN...that is a valid point on the Ryans except that as to the
Cowboys, they do not come off as a dirty team to me the past couple of years. I think their offensive line has been dirty on occasion but not the defense.
Lupica just talking about Brees and a potential divorce
8. Coach Vitt said one of his primary roles was to monitor the activity of Coach Williams. This was based on the direction of Coach Payton, who apparently had less than full confidence in Coach Williams. Despite Coach Vitts knowledge of the bounty program, his understanding of the terms knock-out and cart-off, his witnessing Coach Williams handing out envelopes that he believed to contain cash, and his acknowledgement that the defensive meeting preceding the 2010 NFC Championship Game may have got out of hand with respect to Brett Favre, Coach Vitt claimed he never advised either Coach Payton or General Manager Mickey Loomis of the pay-for-performance/bounty program.
10. When interviewed in 2012, Sean Payton claimed to be entirely unaware of the program, a claim contradicted by others. Further, prior to the Saints opening game in 2011, Coach Payton received an email from a close associate that stated in part, PS Greg Williams put me down for $5000 on Rogers (sic). When shown the email during the course of the investigation, Coach Payton stated that it referred to a bounty on Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
11. In early 2010, Mr. Loomis advised Coach Payton that the league office was investigating allegations concerning a bounty program. Coach Payton said that he met with his top two defensive assistants, Coach Williams and Coach Vitt, in advance of the interview with league investigators and told them, Lets make sure our ducks are in a row. Remarkably, Coach Payton claimed that he never inquired of Coach Williams and Coach Vitt as to what happened in the interviews, never asked them if a pay-for-performance or bounty program was in fact in place, and never gave any instructions to discontinue such a program.
It would appear that some of the e-mails the NFL got hold of had Loomis or the owner communicating with him on the bounty program, yet Payton claimed a "dunno" in 2012, when there was hard evidence to show he was lying?
it's also in essence a gigantic fine

he's next. being named directly in that means he's doomed
Evan Silva @evansilva
ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirms more punishment coming for #Saints roster: "We haven't even gotten to the players' penalties yet."
unless he just refuses to show up to work
If he was an employee anywhere else, he would be fired for lying to his employer, hiding illegal payments over the course of several years.
A suspension seems pretty lame to me.
Firing him would have to come from the Saints, and the suspension does not preclude them from doing so.
They stood by him before sanctions were imposed, but there's nothing to stop them from cutting bait on him now. They may still do that.
but there's no limit to how many times a player can be tagged, no? other than the % increase becoming a detriment at some point.
they can hold him for at least the near/mid term future if they so desire.

Every pick after the Saints 2nd rounder will now be one pick sooner than it was yesterday.
So, for the 2nd round there will be 31 rather than 32 picks.

The press release is compelling.

i saw on the NOLA boards fans are in disbelief.

Hence the harshness of his suspension.
Vitt evidently had a big role in this.
