Love the 4th rounders are 4 picks apart
The Round 2 pick is really #31 in the second because of the Saints'
Dubs : 3/27/2012 9:50 am : link
penalties, but the NFL denotes it as if the slot still exists, just without anyone picking in it.
Yeah
Motley Blue : 3/27/2012 9:50 am : link
Reese & Co. can work with that.
we won the super bowl!!
Adam XLII : 3/27/2012 9:51 am : link
Man having the last pick in the 1st round just reminded me. yes!!!!
What if you get to around pick 125
Headhunter : 3/27/2012 9:52 am : link
and the Giants have 2 players they want, how do they decide which one to pick first minimizing their risk of losing the other?
Whichever
Jon in NYC : 3/27/2012 9:58 am : link
one they want more?
Actually very solid,
oldog : 3/27/2012 9:59 am : link
considering how badly we messed up this year with a SB win. Wouldn't be that much worse if we just missed the play offs or went out in the first round, so I guess it was OK to win.
So with the extra 4th in our pocket,
UberAlias : 3/27/2012 10:04 am : link
the wheelers and dealers rush to their draft charts to calculate how far we can push our top pick by dealing our original 4th.
Correction Dubs
Optimus-NY : 3/27/2012 10:12 am : link
Round 4, pick 35, #131 overall (compensatory selection)

This should read:

Round 4, pick 36, #131 overall (compensatory selection)
If the Giants move up
thevett : 3/27/2012 10:13 am : link
not the first, slim in the 2nd. A 3rd or 4th round move maybe.
Moving up!
Bied7 : 3/27/2012 10:19 am : link
I would love to see the Giants move up in Round 2 to get a less bust prone canidate who is more ready to contribute day 1. I know Reese and the scouts are some of the best in the league evaluating talent, but we DID just win the superbowl and we have a lot of depth right not. Some of the draft pick this year we won't have room for. 8 picks! How many of them will actually make the roster or join the practice squad?
moving up in round 2 doesnt not mean
Blue Blood : 3/27/2012 10:24 am : link
you are getting a more bust proof candidate.. Sinorice Moss anyone..
I doubt they will move up in any round
UberAlias : 3/27/2012 10:25 am : link
Their philosophy is to bring in good football players and create competition.
Reese traded up to get Bryan Kehl. Bad move.
Klaatu : 3/27/2012 10:31 am : link
He also traded up to get Ramses Barden. The jury is still out on that one, but the last vote was 11-1 to convict.
Klaatu
UberAlias : 3/27/2012 10:37 am : link
Reese has had very little movement of draft picks since 2007. You have those two and a couple late ones in minor player deals, that I recall.
Uber
Klaatu : 3/27/2012 10:52 am : link
I hope he stays put. I wouldn't mind a trade down from 32, assuming we could find someone who wanted to trade up, but that's it.
no one
KsToNe498 : 3/27/2012 10:58 am : link
Really knows if we will move up in the early rounds or not but I trust in Reese if he decides to do so. He has tried before and did not pull the trigger so you could say eventually he will make a move up
Once it comes down to 2-4 round
jmistler : 3/27/2012 11:05 am : link
It's almost a crapshoot, I'll take quantity over projected quality.
Depending on which way we go in Round 1....
Torrag : 3/27/2012 11:08 am : link
I'd try and move up to get either Massie or Givens in Round 2....imo neither will be available at #63. The red chip cut line is somewhere mid round 2 as I see it.
...
Dubs : 3/27/2012 11:11 am : link
I think there's a perfectly reasonable chance that Givens is available at the end of the second.
Dubs I doubt it but hey this is the draft everyone has an opinion....
Torrag : 3/27/2012 11:12 am : link
....thats why we do this.
8 picks with 5 picks in the first 4 rounds
ZogZerg : 3/27/2012 11:14 am : link
sounds good to me. We should be able to address some of the many needs.
Torrag
Dubs : 3/27/2012 11:17 am : link
It's a really deep WR class. There may be a run on them in the second and even then, Givens may be available. Think about some of the top guys, even after Blackmon, Floyd, Hill and Wright:

Randle, Jeffrey, Toon, McNutt, Sanu, Wylie, Adams...etc.

The order will shake itself out but, if not Givens, we should still be in the position to draft a talented WR at the end of the second.
Dubs it depends on what you are looking for at WR
Torrag : 3/27/2012 11:32 am : link
...I like Givens a lot. Better than all those guys you named with the exception of Randle, who imo has a chance to go late round 1. What we need at WR is a guy that can go vertical and put fear into the safeties and d-coordinators. There isn't a burner wideout on our roster atm. Nicks, Cruz, Jernigan, Barden, Hixon have some speed but nothing eyepopping. I'd be willing to move our own 4th rounder to make sure I add that dimension. Maybe you wouldn't, maybe a lot of people wouldn't. I doubt the Giants will, but I would.

BTW I'd target Massie before Givens, I think he's going to be the best RT coming out of this draft in a couple years.
There will be ample space on the roster for eight rookies...
Big Blue Blogger : 3/27/2012 11:33 am : link
...if they are all good. Did anyone think four rookie linebackers would make the team in 2011?

Even without injuries or surprise cuts, there's probably room for an offensive lineman, a tight end, a running back, two receivers, a defensive tackle, a defensive end, two cornerbacks, a safety and a linebacker or two. Again, that's assuming that they don't suck.

Anyway, there will probably be a clunker or two in the first seven picks. Adding an eighth pick improves the chances of upgrading the roster.
The added cost to trading down
Enoch : 3/27/2012 11:36 am : link
out of the 1st round is the limitation on contract length. 1st-round contracts can have a 5th-year option. 2nd-round contracts are capped at 4 years.
The NY Giants traded up for "Mr. 50/50"
Adam G in Big D : 3/27/2012 12:42 pm : link
Brian Alford.

He appeared in just 6 games making 2 catches.

Burner?
OC : 3/27/2012 12:49 pm : link
Who cares, Cruz & Nicks get open deep almost at will.
Ugh. Every single year we go through this
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/27/2012 1:25 pm : link
"WE NEED A BURNER!!!" nonsense.
Wow. New Orleans only has four picks.
johnnyb : 3/27/2012 1:55 pm : link
And their first pick is not until 3RD round, #89.

Too bad.
Speed is intimidating
TMS : 3/27/2012 2:01 pm : link
no doubt, and changes defensive alignments which open up other options. But foremost we need guys who run good routes and can catch. Our offense when running right will get guys open and we have the QB to get it there. We could go speed if we are sure the target can do the first two things.
Why is it so difficult
Jay in Toronto : 3/27/2012 3:31 pm : link
to find out the times the draft will run on the 26th-28th?
The Giants are fairly deep, but there will be plenty of room
cnuke : 3/27/2012 3:31 pm : link
for 8 rookies if they can play. If anyone thinks the Giants are so deep there won't be room for good draft picks to make the team, they are kidding themselves.

Here is a quick list of names of players that were on 53 man Super Bowl roster that are either gone or seem likely to be gone: Mario Manningham, Aaron Ross, Brandon Jacobs, Kareem McKenzie, Dave Tollefson, Rocky Bernard, Deon Grant,Derrick Martin, Tony Ugoh.

That's 9 and doesn't include Will Blackmon (since TT is coming back and was on IR) or our 2 TEs that will likely start the season on PUP. Austin and Beatty

There is plenty of room for rookie draft picks, and there will probably be room for an URFA or two.
Question and Comment
Samiam : 3/27/2012 4:08 pm : link
If the Giants wanted to move up in any one of the first 3 rounds by trading the pick in that round plus their own 4th round pick, can someone estimate how much they move in that round? For example, if it's round 1, they would move up 2 slots or whatever. If it's 2nd round round, it's this. In know people here know how to calculate that.

My comment is that for CAP purposes, the Giants will continue to bring in more UFDAs this year as they did last year. One of the best ways to offset the large number of big dollar contracts the Giants have is by offsetting with much cheaper contracts and you don't get much cheaper than UFDAs and low round picks. I think they had 12 first year players last year and will probably have a large number this year as well
I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants
illmatic : 3/27/2012 5:26 pm : link
moved up a couple times this year. They usually don't but with the extra 4th rounder plus they don't have many spots for low round rookies, it could be the year that they try to do it.
Samiam: Roughly ten spots in round three.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/27/2012 5:32 pm : link
Five or six spots in round two. Only two or three spots in round one.
Giants
Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/27/2012 6:14 pm : link
are not as settled as some suggest. A lot of UFA's won't be coming back. There will be a fairly sizable turnover (which seems to be the norm now in the NFL).
Well E,
Big Blue '56 : 3/27/2012 6:27 pm : link
We are more settled than anyone else..Champions, flawed or not usually are..

Most importantly we have one of the most settled coaching staffs and the best QB in the game along with Aaron Rodgers
Giants have to draft very very well this year
Blue Blood : 3/27/2012 7:25 pm : link
this will set the tone of the franchise for a while..
I hope Reese sticks to BPA every round
bluefin : 3/27/2012 9:07 pm : link
both those 4th round picks could conceivably be among NYG's 3rd round rated talent
