Martellus Bennett 2011 highlights!

Neverend : 3/30/2012 3:38 pm
the guy who uploads the new york giants player videos on youtube is back! he was apparently suspended for some time now

anyway he made an excellent video of martellus bennett's 2011 season and every pass the cowboys threw his way. Great tool to evaluate him as opposed to "he said, she said"

than Bennett in his first four
Seems like they used him for

screen and check downs. Should have more opportunities with Eli at the helm.
Ha ha, highlights. That would mean more than one
PatersonPlank : 3/30/2012 4:10 pm : link
All I saw was him catching that same TE screen/check down pass at the line of scrimmage. Anything longer than that was dropped (for the most part). He better work on his hands.

I miss Ballard already.
I think
Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/30/2012 4:13 pm : link
there is still a disconnect with fans and blocking for the run game. Most folks say "upgrade the OL...upgrade the OL." FB (injury to Hynoski and his inexperience) and TEs were half the problem.
His position coach was Jason Garret's brother
Floyd_Fan : 3/30/2012 4:13 pm : link
not Mike Pope. That might also make a difference for him.
Its interesting
the_fridge : 3/30/2012 4:13 pm : link
very little of what we saw there is how the Giants use the TE, aside from the routes where he kind of settles into a zone. Let's hope he can make that catch down the seam because that's NYG bread and butter.
he has got size and speed.
bigblueviator : 3/30/2012 4:13 pm : link
for sure. the Giants will not line him up out wide, and frankly those poor plays that went for INTs have little to do with him, but the play call is pretty obvious to diagnose as a defender where the ball is designed to go.

duhhhhhh -- you think they're playing for this mismatch?

I think that TE screen can be deadly though with him, and between Bradshaw, Hynoski, and Bennett all being able to run a screen from base offense --- opposing defenses are going to have a really hard time.
He seems stuck
Joey in VA : 3/30/2012 4:14 pm : link
In that "Hey I made a catch" mode when you make your first few grabs and you focus only on the ball, and don't really see your place in the overall play or think about how to make people miss or run someone over. I would think by this time in his career he'd have gotten over that but he may just be what is, a big average TE with better than average acceleration who will never be what he's capable of.

I have no clue how the Cowboys TE coach operates with the limited looks they gave Bennett, he doesn't seem to be trusted by the staff to do much more than run screens and quick in routes. He's got speed but he doesn't have a clue how big he is and seems to have no idea how to use that to gain an edge. That's one reason Ballard overcomes his run of the mill athleticism, he uses his size advantage and knows how to turn and run with the ball. Maybe Pope can coach him up more than he has been but I wouldn't expect anything more than average TE play.
Hmmm
Johnny5 : 3/30/2012 4:15 pm : link
I don't know, I saw some definite good things there with the bad. I can only salivate over his blocking and what Pope will be able to get him to be able to do within this offense. The promise is thier in my view, hopefully it pans out in this offense, with this coaching staff.
deflator.

he needs how to learn to
Sir-Yes-Sir : 3/30/2012 4:22 pm : link
stabilize himself before a catch. when he turns back to the qb to face the pass, he continues to drift away from the ball allowing the defender to get in the play
I agree with Eric about
Semipro Lineman : 3/30/2012 4:23 pm : link
how the tight-end and fullback blocking problems affected the running game. Their late season improvement along with getting Diehl back to tackle made a big difference down the stretch. Now we have a more experience fullback and a better blocking tight-end. You will see the results.
Can Pope really improve him tho?
Neverend : 3/30/2012 4:23 pm : link
If he doesnt work at it? Lets not act like beckum developed into the weapon the giants envisioned. I think a great coach like Pope can help TEs develop technique in their blocking and savvy in their routes but is he suddenly going to give Bennett sticky gloves? Make him better at separating? Etc.

Maybe the guy's ceiling is overrated
All this video shows...
Giants82 : 3/30/2012 4:23 pm : link
...is how bad of a QB romo is. That high point fade to the endzone on the second play of the video was a terrible throw by Romo...he could have easily put it 2-3 feet higher for an easy TD. Eli makes, and has made, that throw.

This was a TE2 in their system. Didn't see much, if anything in the seam, where I think he would matchup better with LBs. Hope he shines with the Giants.

Disagree. Bennett has to box out the DB or at least adjust to the ball and come back to it. Shows he needs to learn how to use his height/long arms consistently. And the question is, does he have the maturity and work ethic to improve his craft? Lets see what Pope does
wait until Pope gets his hands on
Rflairr : 3/30/2012 4:26 pm : link
this guy. That and Fleener pushing him for the Starter spot will bring out the best in him
We're not taking another TE at 32
BlackLight : 3/30/2012 4:27 pm : link
Worse case scenario, Bennett will be a 1-year rental while Ballard and Beckum get healthy, and some of the young guys lower on the depth chart move up.

If Bennett can equal what Ballard did last season, I'll be happy. Then, next spring, we can talk about what we're doing at that position.

He also got few looks because he was the #2 TE behind one of the best in the game. How many touches did our backup TE get?

made we want the Giants to draft Fleener even more !!!

routes out 2 years ago when Bennett couldn't run them and catch the ball at the same time.
He had 2 drops
dirksauce : 3/30/2012 4:41 pm : link
You guys act like he dropped 30 passes, shows how shitty romo is with overthrows and no fade pass on a fade route. When your only passed to 24 times in a season....It's hard to have highlights
And
dirksauce : 3/30/2012 4:43 pm : link
The tipped drop...If romo lead him maybe he wouldnt have had to turn around and attempt to catch it with a defender batting at him
Here is what I saw
giantsfan44ab : 3/30/2012 4:44 pm : link
Negative: Not good split out wide. Not the best hands in the world, but hey, Ballard and Boss both had among the worst hands in the NFL. Can't be much worse than what they have. And Boss and Ballard were both really slow.

Positive: Speed. Can out run defenders going across the middle. Also, he looks to get a decent sized 4-8 yards on screen passes, which Ballard and Boss couldnt do. He would be a great check-down option if the play breaks down.

I think he is an improvement over what we had last year. Havent seen much of his blocking but he was a great run blocker and helped Dallas get rushing yards with mediocre RBs (when Murray was out and was not starting).
Ballard had
Headhunter : 3/30/2012 4:45 pm : link
among the worst hands? Who was that that I was watching that I thought was Ballard?
Neverend
SLIM : 3/30/2012 4:46 pm : link
yes, he needs to want to improve and be coached up. A couple of things that keep me optimistic. He could have signed for a longer deal somewhere else, I'm sure. He didn't. I think he understands that he needs to prove to the league what he feels he can be. If you remember last summer, the Giants offered Plax a bigger potential but the Jets offered him more guaranteed. Plax took the easy way out. This kid didn't.

Another thing, I didn't see the HBO special with the Cowboys training camp but from what I hear, he really didn't respect his coach. It seems like he already has a love affair with Pope. Maybe he is mature enough to say the right things now but that is half the battle.

As for Beckum and Pope. I'm not sure how much time Pope spent with him. Beckum really wasn't viewed as a tight end here so I'm not sure who really coached him.
my thoughts exactly
SB46GIANTS : 3/30/2012 4:48 pm : link
nevermind...""""I think a great coach like Pope can help TEs develop technique in their blocking and savvy in their routes but is he suddenly going to give Bennett sticky gloves?"""""

After watching the video I can see that his hands aren't what scouts may have seen coming out of college. Pope can teACH a TE to improve their blocking and route running etc but having good hands is something you have or something you don't. You are just good at catching a football or not. Stilght but not significant improvement can be made but not major leaps. Having said that... Perhaps as underutilized as he was maybe he was just rusty.

Looking over the video
mrvax : 3/30/2012 4:54 pm : link
and comments I can certainly agree Bennett needs to learn to box out opponents. He doesn't yet have that skill.
I guess Ballard
giantsfan44ab : 3/30/2012 4:57 pm : link
Improved his hands. But the loss to the Eagles can be soley pinned on him. He dropped 3 crucial catches throughout the game.

But that doesnt take away from the fact that he was too slow. He ran good routes but couldnt find the separation to be a good #1.

I think that the play in the endzone was a designed back-shoulder fade. The defender just did a good job on that play
...
ilikethenygiants : 3/30/2012 5:01 pm : link
He looked good to me. By my count he dropped what, one ball? The fade in the end zone was a bad throw and a good defensive play. He's more athletic than any TE we've ever had. a good blocker, etc. I think he'll be great and get resigned to a long term deal.

Yeah I think your right on that one
i like him , he has the size and some giddiyap to him
gtt350 : 3/30/2012 5:31 pm : link
Pope will coach him up and Eli throwing to him , he will be fine
Bennett
Dragon : 3/30/2012 5:46 pm : link
Should love our passing game we can't run screens and our TE's get to run deep crossing patterns. He looked surprised when the ball was thrown to him and many of the passes took away his speed and size since he was standing still. He has some nice wheels but they kept him very close to the line of scrimmage. Romo did not help him much but Eli may hurt him due to his lack of knowledge of our passing game. The OT's have to be a blessing for him because it's a completely different offense for him to learn. Shock was the last TE we had with physiacal skills above his but it's show time does he want it bad enough?
Anyone
Fish : 3/30/2012 5:47 pm : link
Mention that Romo sucks.
No doubt Bennett has work to do but Eli is better than Romo and that will help.
I don't think if Ballard had Romo throwing to him Ballard would have been as good.
the bad hands thing is completely overrated
Peter from CT : 3/30/2012 6:27 pm : link
he had something like four non-catches in the video. Two of them were clearly on Romo. The deflection for an interception looked like he couldn't see the ball (watch and see him waving his hand over his eyes to the QB). Frankly, after reading how Cowboy fans said he dropped everything, I don't know what they are talking about. He also made a great catch off the deflection.

He is among the best blocking TEs in the game and looks like he can catch the ball.

Add Fleener or a top 2 round WR and we could have a sick offense (again).
He's an excellent pickup.
CT Charlie : 3/30/2012 8:55 pm : link
Pro Football Focus rated him the #1 blocking TE in the NFL last season, and as a receiver he's good enough to be a significant THREAT. Romo's passing was underwhelming.
Romo hardly sucks.
Riggies : 3/30/2012 9:02 pm : link
He's not remotely a QB that holds back a pass catcher, at any position, and putting MB's general failure on him is the same as the stupidity many showed re: Sinorice Moss and Eli.
He fights the ball a bit
Bino5 : 3/30/2012 10:30 pm : link
especially in traffic. Hopefully being a bigger part of the offense helps. He's definitely an athlete.
Bennett+ physical skills+Pope= he'll be an asset

Would be nice to see some video of this guy blocking
GeofromNJ : 3/30/2012 11:15 pm : link
His pass catching skills are marginal to fair, but if he can block like Cross or Bavaro, I'd be delighted, and so too would Reese and Coughlin. The Giants' lack of a run blocker on the right side of the line of scrimmage was costly last year.
this video doesn't get me excited about Bennett per se
AgentZero : 3/31/2012 12:06 am : link
this video makes me appreciate how much better a QB Eli is over Romo...on the first pass to Bennett in the end zone against Washington, Eli would make a throw that only Bennett would have caught.
He wasn't going to get many looks there with Witten ahead of him..
arcarsenal : 3/31/2012 12:16 am : link
In addition to guys like Austin, Bryant, Robinson and even Owens at WR.

He's an outstanding blocker.. he's athletic and we'll be able to utilize him in ways that Dallas didn't. I think he's more talented than a guy like Ballard and probably Boss as well.. he just hasn't tapped his potential because of the situation he was in. I think Pope will do wonders for him and I think he will have a really solid year here.
I agree, Bennett was not used much by Dallas and it shows.
idinkido : 3/31/2012 8:55 am : link
It is pretty difficult for most athletes to excel when not used much. His effectiveness will go up as a starter. I'm not saying he won't make mistakes. I'm saying that he is going to be a lot better than what we saw in the video. Our offense has a lot of weapons and we have Eli, a QB that is more accurate than Romo. Do we need another TE? Yes, we do but if all things are equal: Would you prefer the first pick being a LT or a TE?
That
Toth029 : 3/31/2012 10:09 am : link
Fade by Romo was terrible. From Eli that is a TD.
I hope Bennett shows some loyalty
PEEJ : 3/31/2012 10:18 am : link
after Pope turns him into a star
A TE
Mike fr Warwick : 3/31/2012 11:12 am : link
That can seal the edge has been missing from this offense since Shockey left. Not talking about shielding or getting in the way but a block that creates movement and creates the flotsam in which defenders pursuit angles are compromised. Talking about DTs and Lb. The Giants won't have to pull OL or motion the FB outside to get that seal as much thus having more flexibility in their blocking schemes.

I wonder how this guy will matchup when they throw a DE over him?
