jlukes' Annual Mock Draft

jlukes : 4/4/2012 10:35 am
Every year I try to go through the first few rounds of the draft and pick the guys I think/want the Giants should grab. I did my analysis using many different sites including, but not limited to, CBSports, Draftcountdown, footballsfuture, and walterfootball. Here are my thoughts for the 2012 draft.

1) Devon Still, Defensive Tackle, Penn State - 6'5", 303lbs

Large frame, quick of the snap, the ability to get past lineman, and the ability to clog up the middle. What more could you as for in a defensive tackle? Reminds me a lot of fellow Penn Stater Jay Alford – only with a larger upper body. The only real knock on him is that he is inconsistent with his get-off on the snap (from a lack of technique), but that can be easily coached. Would be an excellent person to have in the rotation with Linval, Canty, and Austin, and would be a potential replacement for Canty as early as 2013 if Canty’s cap number becomes too much of a hinderance

2) Kelechi Osemele, Offensive Guard, Iowa State - 6'6", 333lbs

I can’t help but salivate every time I read a scouting reporting of Osemele. Dude is an animal. Reminds me a lot of Carl Nicks (now with the Bucs) in terms of sides and ability to finish his blocks. He played all over the line in college, including left tackle. I see Osemele being our RT or LG for the next 10 years. The only reason I would project him more towards RT is we ask our LG to pull a ton, and pulling is probably Osemele’s only weakness.

3) Cyrus Gray, Running Back, Texas A& M – 5’10”, 206lbs

Has all the tools to thrive in the Giants’ offense. Extremely quick feet. Can change direction in an instant. Sub 4.5 40 time. Runs behind his pads and though not a “big back,” he runs with power. Excellent pass blocker and receiver out of the backfield. Experience as a kick returner. Biggest knock on Gray is that sometimes he is overly patient and does not immediately accelerate through the hole. The acceleration is there, he just needs to learn to trust what he sees.

4a) Omar Bolden, Cornerback, Arizona State – 5’10”, 202lbs

Coming into the year, Bolden was rated as one of the top CBs in the country. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in Spring practices. Bolden was able to run at ASU’s pro day and clocked around 4.45 in the 40 less than a year removed from his ACL injury. Bolden is a classic cover corner that can stay with the quick receivers. He can press most guys, but he isn’t the biggest corner – however he can still be physical with larger WRs. Great read and react ball skills Reads the QB and can break on the ball in an instant – has the hands to make the INT once he gets there. Solid tackler and punt returner. Would be a great value for the Giants here, and having 4-5 starting caliber CBs is pretty much a must in the pass driven NFL.

4b) Travis Lewis, Outside Linebacker, Oklahoma – 6’1”, 246lbs

My favorite run and chase linebacker in the draft. We saw last year how valuable Michael Boley was, and it was clear that we didn’t have a backup capable of filling in for him. Lewis is extremely fluid in pass protection and posses safety-like skills when dropping into a zone. He is so quick that he can stay with pretty much any Tight End and a fair amount of WRs. Creates turnovers. Not overly physical against the run, but has the ability to shoot the gaps and disrupt plays. Could even see the field as a 3rd "safety" in the big nickel package. My favorite quote that I read about him is regarding his read and react skills: “Combines very good instincts with above-average reaction skills. Almost always finds the ball in traffic. Greet feel in coverage, sees quarterback and receiver, jumps routes to prevent completion, or at least stop yards after the catch. One-man wrecking crew against screens because he sniffs them out and has the quickness to grab the receiver.” – Chad Reuter

5) Tommy Streeter, Wide Receiver, Miami – 6’4”, 215lbs

Giants need to find another big body that can stretch the field. Streeter has a good chance of being that guy. At 6’4, Streeter is a burner, but also isn’t scared to go across the middle of the field. Put up decent numbers, but his production was limited to sub-par quarterback play. Could instantly challenge Jernigan, Hixon and Barden for spot in 3 or 4 WR formations

Appreciate any and all feedback!

good work gentlemen
Nice work

but I would never draft a Penn State lineman in Round 1...the history scares me to death!
I would be happy with Still..
PeterS : 4/4/2012 2:12 pm : link
he's a solid player who, at #32, would probably fit the BPA scenario. Makes sense if DT depth is a genuine concern.

Two WR's but zero TE's????
not a fan of still
sacks : 4/4/2012 2:13 pm : link
but excellent work and thanks for the effort.
jlukes, appreciate the draft,
barens : 4/4/2012 3:24 pm : link
and I completely respect your opinion, but I'm not crazy about your mock draft. I'm not a big fan of Still, and I don't know if the value is there for him in the first round(albeit the #32nd pick). I just don't see him as any kind of impact player for the Giants to pick him with their #1.

I'd be very happy with Osemele, he's one of those players who you just don't know whether he's a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick, but footwork is my only concern with him.

I'm not a Cyrus Gray fan at all. I've watched him live a lot the past 2 years, and he didn't exactly live up to expectations. I don't know if there was an injury this year, but he was surpassed on the depth chart by Michael Christine until he got hurt, both last year and this year, and I didn't see the toughness in his game that I hear about. Just my .02 cents.

I would love Travis Lewis, I think he would be an outstanding pick in almost any round.

Bolden, I don't love his ball skills, but he does have good speed, and he's looks like an excellent special teams player. I know the Giants showed some interest the past few weeks, but I'm not a big fan (though I trust the Giants scouts unconditionally more than me).

If Streeter is available in the 5th round, that would be a major steal. I would love to see that.
Love the Gray and Lewis picks
Neverend : 4/4/2012 4:01 pm : link
Would be happy with that. I think streeter is a little overrated tho
barens - appreciate your insight and feedback
jlukes : 4/4/2012 4:04 pm : link
who are the RBs that you would take a luck at in the middle rounds?
I don't know enough about football I guess.
mjt832 : 4/4/2012 4:17 pm : link
That seems like a good draft to me. I like the positions you targeted - especially the 1st 3 picks.
I probably know just as much as you, but I've heard Pat Kirwan and
barens : 4/4/2012 5:37 pm : link
Tim Ryan on Sirius NFL radio mention Isaiah Pead as a 2nd round pick for the Giants, and they seemed to really like him. I'm interested in Jewel Hampton from Southern Illinois, former Iowa running back. He blew out his knee in 2010, and transferred to SI, had a great year, and had a strong combine and pro day.

I could be very wrong about Gray, that's just my opinion, from the games I watched.

I know their history doesn't suggest it, but I'd love to see the Giants draft a running back in round 1. There seems to be a lot of talented backs at the top of this draft.

barens, funny you mention Pead
jlukes : 4/4/2012 5:43 pm : link
I was kicking around the idea of drafting Osemele 1, followed by Pead 2, bumping Bolden up to the 3rd round, and taking DT Kheeston Randall out of Texas in the 4th.

However, the more I read, i saw there was (like you had mentioned) a lot of variability on where Osemele could go, so I put him at our 2nd pick and went with the draft you see above.

if i remember correctly jewel hampton only benched at the combine....
raever : 4/4/2012 6:38 pm : link
...that isn't exactly a strong showing for a RB with an injury history. No idea what his proday numbers were...anyone have a link? I remember liking him as a frosh at iowa but then he blew out a knee I think.
Honestly
Tuck_N_Rolle : 4/4/2012 7:30 pm : link
I thought that draft was horrible and Im glad you have nothing to do with the Giants FO. Just for a starters, a shifty running back is not what the Giants are looking for. This mock was like waking up after a nightmare and feeling the relief it was fake. Penn St. DT in round one....hahhhahahahahahahahaha....no chance....good effort bad mock.
Tuck N Rolle
jlukes : 4/4/2012 7:31 pm : link
thank you for your contributions to BBI, under both this handle, and the previous handle which you had.
I like rounds 2, 3 and 5 a lot
chris r : 4/4/2012 7:33 pm : link
not entirely sold on Still, but he's got enough talent at a premium position to be worth a shot.
Don't be
Tuck_N_Rolle : 4/4/2012 7:35 pm : link
a baby, I don't like the mock its not personal. I think, just going by their head coaches comments, that a power back makes more sense than a speedster. Additionally, I think Penn St first round players are way to risky, and DT in General, makes little to sense to me. I don't like the picks. Handle it like a man, as you said you welcomed all feedback. Again good effort, but I think the draft is bad. Deal with it.

As for your prior handle comment, I have no comment and won't dignify it with a denial.
Tuck N Rolle is a dupe?
Matt G : 4/4/2012 7:36 pm : link
And here I thought he was a bright star... "Were not Keeping JPP, Nicks and Cruz" had BBI thread of the year written all over it... sigh
Matt G.. haha
jlukes : 4/4/2012 7:55 pm : link
Tuck N Rolle - we need shitty posters like you on BBI so never stop doing what you do. You make everyone else seem like friggen Bill Parcells
raever, I think he benched 225 26 times,
barens : 4/4/2012 8:16 pm : link
which was 3rd best among running backs. He just had his pro day recently, and ran in the high 4.4's. He was a highly touted recruit coming into Iowa, who unfortunetely had some bad luck with injuries. For me, I'd wager a mid round pick on Hampton.

Jlukes, it's interesting, because as good as this running back class looks, there aren't exactly a lot of bruisers available. There seems to be a lot of running backs similar to Bradshaw, which isn't a bad thing, it just seems sort of not Giant like.
No Still!
jeff57 : 4/4/2012 8:31 pm : link
He's the return of Willy Joe.
jeff - what are the traits that lead you to that comparison
jlukes : 4/4/2012 8:32 pm : link
?
Traits
jeff57 : 4/4/2012 8:37 pm : link
Relatively tall and thin. Not a run stuffer, but not a penetrator either. On the ground too often.
Ironically...
Dunedin81 : 4/4/2012 8:46 pm : link
their measurements are very similar (6'5", give or take, 300, give or take), both ran around 5.00, Joseph slightly under, Still slightly over. Their stat lines for their senior years were actually pretty comparable, 55 tackles, 17 TFL, 4.5 sacks for Still, 51/16/5 for Joseph as a senior. Doesn't mean they're similar players or will have comparable pro careers, but interesting.
jlukes
Tuck_N_Rolle : 4/4/2012 8:53 pm : link
and we need people to waste hours coming up with garbage mock drafts. The draft blows. Luckily you are not a GM.
Dude, you started a thread about not being able to keep
jlukes : 4/4/2012 8:58 pm : link
Nicks, Cruz, and JPP... seriously, what was your old handle. Were you banned, or were you tired of people telling you how much you sucked, so to you tried to get a fresh start?
Douchetastic for sure...
Dunedin81 : 4/4/2012 9:15 pm : link
Guys who want to take the time to put together realistic mocks and open themselves up for criticism are worth taking seriously. Douchebag ankle-biters who offer nothing but puerile insults are not.
The WillyJo comparison sure is interesting
jlukes : 4/5/2012 8:48 am : link
but I just don't see the same "effort" issues with Still.
Some strange comments.
bob in tx : 4/5/2012 9:35 am : link
Gray is not a "speedster" per se. I'm not crazy about Still but with 3-4 DTs available at #32 it is certainly possible. How can Still,Osemele,Gray,Bolden and Streeter be considered a bad mock? They may be "names" we all recognize but that is how 99% of mocks play out. I'd tweak jlukes' effort as: Reuben Randle-Osemele(still think he's gone at bottom of 2nd round)-Gray-Bolden-Lewis-Josh Chapman(okay,or Kheeston Randall).
Been thinking about this mock.
section125 : 4/5/2012 9:44 am : link
I just don't see a DT 1st round. I don't think DT is that big a concern for the Giants, despite what JR said about Austin.

Hard to figure JR anyway, but I see RB, WR, and OL (BPA of course) as the bigger concerns.

I could see OL if Konz or Glenn drop.
Bob, I can live with your tweak!
jlukes : 4/5/2012 9:45 am : link
Not completely sold on Randle, but he is shooting up the boards.
Section
Dunedin81 : 4/5/2012 9:46 am : link
I think its more likely we bring back Bernard or sign veteran depth, considering we have two young DTs in Joseph and Austin on the roster.
section - the reason I put Still as our first round pick
jlukes : 4/5/2012 10:09 am : link
is because Canty turns 30 this summer and is only signed through 2013. Canty, if cut next offseason, would save the Giants $3mil in cap space.
We could also...
Dunedin81 : 4/5/2012 10:11 am : link
extend Canty in exchange for near-term cap relief. He and Joseph are a great duo, especially if Austin and another DT can form a solid rotation inside and keep them fresh.
jliukes, I thought you might be
section125 : 4/5/2012 10:21 am : link
looking forward to cutting Canty to save cap space. With the cap so tight more than one vet will be leaving the Gmen earlier than expected. I'm sure there will be surprses in the cut list and a few vets let go with hopes (Giants hopes) of re-signing at a lower salary.
I can agree with your thought process, but think DT in the 4th rd makes more sense (IMO) if your are looking to next year for cuts.
Overall the mock is good.
section - the biggest wildcard is Marvin Austin
jlukes : 4/5/2012 10:53 am : link
if he doesn't develop, DT becomes an immediate need next year. Drafting a DT early is a way to hedge and give us some flexibility.
It is a good
section125 : 4/5/2012 11:06 am : link
thought process..
jlukes
Klaatu : 4/5/2012 11:06 am : link
I think Canty is signed through 2014. Free agent in 2015.
you're right
jlukes : 4/5/2012 11:07 am : link
one more year than i thought
Link - ( New Window )
Jesus! Canty is an 8mil cap hit in 2013 and 2014
jlukes : 4/5/2012 11:08 am : link
(he is about 7.5 this year).
Bailiff, whack his pee-pee!
Klaatu : 4/5/2012 11:08 am : link
...
Canty
SLIM : 4/5/2012 11:11 am : link
Recently redid his contract. I don't know if it was extended but his salary was converted to bonus money which means that the Giants still view him as part of the core. I don't think he is going anywhere.

Marvin Austin.
Klaatu : 4/5/2012 11:18 am : link
At least the Giants will be able to see what kind of shape he's in before the draft...that is, if he shows up on April 16.
Should have pushed the enveople even more
TheDream88 : 4/5/2012 1:11 pm : link
Something like this

1.Blackmon
2.Kuechley
ETC....

Very unrealstic draft, as the potential for all of your selections to NOT be available at said picks is far greater them all to be available.

TheDream88
jlukes : 4/5/2012 1:20 pm : link
all of the projections were taken from other draft sites - the top ones around. I didn't pull it out of my ass
.
jlukes : 4/5/2012 1:27 pm : link
Still - Late 1st to Early 2nd
Osemele - Mid 2nd to Early 3rd
Gray - Mid to late 3rd
Bolden - Early 4th to late 4th
Lewis - Early 5th to mid 6th

so how exactly is my mock unrealistic again?
Finally
Blue Blood : 4/5/2012 2:14 pm : link
a draft that makes sense...

good work !!!
Cosell has be warming up to Randle quite a bit
jlukes : 4/7/2012 3:37 pm : link
Greg Cosell ‏ @gregcosell
Like WR Randle. Smooth, athletic, acceleration off the LOS. Belive he can win isolation routes on outside as "x". Similarities to H. Nicks.

Greg Cosell ‏ @gregcosell
No WR in this draft as good as A. Johnson or C. Johnson when they came out. Blackmon/Floyd not in that category. Randle intrigues me most.
